THIS IS THE BEST LINE IN ANY REVIEW.
Brutal review here. I love it. These are the issues that have always kept me from getting one.

Worst review- showed absolutely NO reality about the machine, showed nothing of what it does, showed NONE of the platform evolution and software evolution. This is the worst review of all time.
@@michaelpatrick4796 Lol he showed the potential of the iPad with the people who are going to buy it. There's a specific audience for it. He talked about everything necessary in this review.
Facts
Yeah it definitely showed some of the evolution. Half the video was quite direct and specific comparisons between this one and the previous one. Not every video needs to (or should) have a full product line history - that would just be a lot of wasted video time, kill retention of viewers, etc. much better suited to its own video.
Finally, a not-overenthusiastic, systematic, comprehensive review of this thing from a professional's perspective. Thumbs up Nilay!

Just about to say ijustine
I was about to say the same thing. Glad he did not sugarcoat it. At least i know what to get now

Someone FINALLY answered the "laptop replacement question" correctly.
Didn't Dave Lee answer it like a year ago

This is the comment I was looking for 😊

You needed someone to tell you if the iPad Pro would work for you or not?
One of best detailed and explained reviews I've seen of any product. Bloody well done!
This would be an instant buy for me if it would support desktop apps…
Definitely agree with you on that. I love the form factor and the hardware if they had mac os on this it would kill the sales of the macbook laptops.

Exceptional review
Come on, it was good. That was it.
Wait till to watch iPhonedo's iPad review..
Exceptionally bad
Agreed one of the best ive every watched on youtube.
Yes I agree. Probably the best review that I have seen so far on the ipad. Good information to think of.
Thanks for a very honest review, "I don't want to adapt to my computer, I want my computer to adapt to me." sums up the iPad Pro
sums up the apple ecosystem
Apple mantra is for you to adapt to their products.
G A M I N G P C
You summed it up way better than I did
It's a shame about the software. I have a 2017 12.9 pro and I never came close to the limits of the A10x processor. This A12x is great and all but just a gimmick at this point as there isn't one app to take advantage of that properly. Apple really needs to redesign iOS from ground up to make this thing useful, or just make a modified macOS version.
If a12 is utilised the devices will last not more than 6 months
@@moser3712 I don't agree, the OS will fly on this chip no matter what, and so will all the basic tasks. To utilize the A12x you need proper software, but then you have the same scenario as with any other laptop where you get the performance that you pay for. It's never going to do the same tasks any worse than now. When you add new functionally that this chip can't handle, it's time for a new device, as with every other. We shouldn't remove functionality so the first gen ipad can run everything smooth, what would be the point of new hardware?
The problem is that iPad Pro is being held back as a laptop replacement by being treated as a powerful table. The new pencil is the one thing that I look at with envy over m 2017 12.9 model, as I justified my purchase as substitute for a graphics tablets (doesn’t work that well if your other computer isn’t a Mac)
Well,I guess fortnite will, in the future .But when you are about to pay $2200 for a tablet, you could have as well used that much amount of money to buy a gaming rig
Amin Bajrektarevic By 2020 apple is gonna be making there own arm cpus. This means that’s Mac OS ( based on the x86 architecture) is gonna be a legacy software. There gonna integrate iOS and Mac OS and this iPad and the iPad coming after this are gonna support it. That’s why the speed doesn’t matter right now but later apple is gonna take advantage of it.
The first unbiased Apple review I've ever seen.

Imagine an iPad Pro that can switch from MacOS to IOS and vice versa whenever the user feels like it.
Thien Pham That would actually be genius! When docked, it would be a MacBook, but when not, it would be an iPad!
Samsung tablets kind of do this with dex, it’s an android-based, windows like operating system.
This is the best iPad pro review yet! Great job covering all my concerns
Buy me one
Probably one of the best product reviews I’ve watched on RUclips.
For sure. Easily
This video is a perfect summary of the iPad Pro. In its current state it is a professional device for professionals and creatives who are using it for a specific purpose and are in a setting where the cost for that purpose is worth it. I think Apples biggest mistake is trying to half market it as a laptop/desktop replacement because while sure certain types of workflow can take advantage of this, the average user may see this and get frustrated when they try to use it as their one and only device (unless it is just an overpriced netflix/youtube/email box). This is of course unless we get an iOS 13/14 that swoops in and fixes the gripes. The two most common ones I hear/see are lack of file system support (including external usb) for management of large files and as stated in the video directly opening them in apps like the new Photoshop CC, and lack of mouse for things like excel. Essentially every other OS supports both of these things so it is doable, we just need to make it clear in their mind that it is what we want.
man this is the best ipad pro review of all channels, one year later, it's still informative and fun to watch. Nilay is of invaluable asset to Verge.
I just wish apple's education discounts were more significant

Simple...Do you draw? - Get an iPad Pro. You don’t draw? - Get a laptop
Drawing was the only reason I bought the first gen iPad Pro. Oh and reading comics and magazines. Which it is great for and probably a lot better now that it is lighter.
@@paul6925 Right?! I currently own a Gen 1 iPad Pro, with an apple pencil. I went into the store yesterday and compared it to the new models, and now I actually think the smaller one is the better buy. if you ever need to take a photo of something, the big ipad is too big to hold in one hand and take a photo. Also, the smaller one was so light, it was a game changer. IT was *SO* comfortable to hold in my hand and draw.
@@paul6925 Plus I've spent $500 on apple pencils because i would break them, lose them, ect. I think the best feature is the new apple pencil!
Theodore Yamada-Dessert ouch I never broke mine but I can see how it might happens since it rolls so easily on sloped surfaces
Theodore Yamada-Dessert I’m gonna buy this new iPad Prod cuz I like drawing dicks...I’ve never drawn one with an Apple Pencil so I’m quite hyped!
Great & honest review. Sounds to me like the USB C issue is a software issue. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next update to iOS addressed that. My gut is that Apple locked that feature to avoid harming the sales numbers of the larger capacity iPads.
Sounds like a really typical thing that Apple would do.
It did get fixed! Check out iPadOS 13!
"I don't want to adapt to my computer, I want my computer to adapt to me." 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No youtube 4k on this display? NOOOO.
I love the concept of the iPad and I might see myself purchasing one but some of these limitations are just so so sad.
Unfortunatly the limitations come from how much ios is locked and that's not gonna change anytime soon
Tbh this is less to do with Apple and more to do with Google trying to strong-arm its own codec on the world. The internet relies on H.264 and it works great. H.265 is the successor and is stupidly capable. Most hardware manufacturers, including Apple, now support hardware acceleration for H.265. The world has chosen it's next-gen codec. VP9 is Google's own thing, isn't even a final spec, isn't well supported by hardware manufacturers, yet is the only codec they use to support RUclips 4K. Believe me, Google will change and support H.265 eventually.
Leonardo Oliveira how do you expect to have 4K RUclips vids on a non 4K screen?
Yeah the hardware is useless if the software doesn’t let you use it. That’s the problem with that fancy chrome book google made a while back
Purpletomato 55 maybe I’m wrong about this but wouldn’t videos still look a lot better since they are capped at 1080p. The iPad might not have 4K, but it is still more capable than a 4K resolution (261 ppi)
One of the best reviews I have seen in a long time. The review was detailed, realistic, and simple to understand. Thanks!
This review is an eye opener. I was thinking about replacing my mbp late 2013 with the new iPad pro. This is the only review that told me the reality, which is don't. Thank you.
This is the most honest review I watched and I was thrilled that you put online EVERYTHING THAT BOTHERS ME ABOUT THIS TABLET... I have the Ipad pro 10.5 and I edit videos on it and when I travel, I can't leave my laptop behind because it can't handle my cameras - can't download images, doesn't have a proper file system... and I'm a photographer/videographer/drone operator, I need that capability...
Now my laptop isn't powerful enough to edit 4k at 50 fps - so I need the Ipad pro - which I also need to fly my drone, other wise I would just dump it and travel with just my laptop...
The opposite however isn't anywhere close to possible... So i need to travel with both - and that's frigg'in annoying!
Why don´t you just get a surface pro 6?
@@Dare2Blink ah, but can't use that with the drone either, needs either Android or IOS
@@ReubenMRU seriously uau that is lame. Though they had Windows versions as well, same way Canon does.

The bezels are the perfect size. You need somewhere to put fingers and grab the device. Apple was obviously capable of making them slimmer. Its merely a design choice
Well they could’ve shrunk it a bit and put in a notch, but I’m happy they didn’t.
Wait till the next iPad will have much much thinner bezels. It will happen, I promise
Samuël Visser i doubt that.
Then, what is edge to edge?
Samuël Visser the next one will just be specs upgrade , i expect the one after the next one to have less bezels & I'm sure of it . And this one with the thick bezels will feel very old .. this is just Apple's way of selling as many devices as they can .
Fantastic review
Apple will never allow the ipads to replace the laptops (by restricting iOS), cause then people would have no reason to buy macbooks.
All of this is baffling to me , because the iPad pro's pricing are now rivaling the macbooks. So what difference does it make if they cannibalize the macbooks?
rai ZOR no that’s what Apple wants to achieve, someday their going to wanna make a product that replaces the iPhone
you kinda need both tbh. One does what the other cant.
If they used Mac OS instead of iOS iPad could replace it rn
This is all just a part of Apples long term strategy of going more and more mobile, and eventually killing off their own desktops and laptops.
Look up “the grand theory of Apple” by Polymatter
This video needs to be grossly updated.
That's brutally honest! Hands down the best.
*Me* : tries to plug in portable SSD 🐶
*Apple* : NO! Bad poor person! BAD! 😤
Chris hopefully some day they will make an OS exclusively for iPad. I think iOS is focused on security and privacy that they will not allow that. A boy can dream.
I can picture your iPad had a whip when you do that.
Amazing video nilay😎
I have an iPad pro it's amazing I bought an apple pencil because I am a little artist and it's help a lot!❤️
Very useful opinion !! Especially "They were supposed to get there, but you know what ? I am tired to waiting" , Yes!! You hit the bulls-eye exactly!!
Personal Opinion but for the price I’d rather get a full Windows laptop that has a proper dedicated graphics card. I feel like that’d be a much better device for video & photo editing, music production and gaming. Personal thoughts though.
Anyone who replaces their laptop for an Ipad probably never needed a laptop in the first place .
@@benjamin7114 That sums it up nicely.
People buy this for the pen mostly artists... Its better than surface
In my opinion iPad Pro only makes sense if you are an artist or/and you want to use it for photo editing.
@@sakitperut123 why? surface pro 2017 pen and apple pencil have the same latency now.
Wow Nilay and the Verge team! Great stuff! That's how reviews should be done. Looking past the marketing glitz, really exploring the use cases and asking the right questions that an average consumer might not ask. Absolutely loved the headline on Verge "THE FASTEST IPAD IS STILL AN IPAD" - that summed it up really well. You might have saved many people (including me) from buying an overpowered video and browsing device at 2 to 4 times the price of non-pro iPad. Agree it would be very useful for someone who draws a lot. However, they keep touting photoshop example - seriously how many average users pay and use Adobe photoshop? And I highly doubt that any serious video/photo professional would use an iPad on a regular basis - imagine sacrificing precision of mouse pointer, imagine use cases when one has to hold a button on keyboard and drag mouse pointer while looking at pixels on a giant monitor. Even though one can plug new ipad pro to a monitor, one will still have to look at the ipad (not the monitor) while making adjustments with finger/pencil.
This is like selling a new wheelchair which looks beautiful, has Tesla drivetrain and costs much more than an normal electric wheelchair. Sure the new one can go really fast - but would you really on a day to day basis?
Suddenly, I feel like Dieter is the only Apple suckup at the Verge. I feel like this is the most honest review of an Apple device they've had in the longest time. Appreciate it Nilay!
Surprised to see Dami Lee! Love her humor and comics 😀😂
The Verge is absolute brilliance.
If I were to nitpick, however, I would say get sharper glass for your camera and do 4K consistently. The cinematography is on point, though.
Keep up the good work!
Really nice iPad but I definitely think 1TB is overkill if you're restricted to iOS.
Noah, but remember the iOS will change over time. The iOS we have today is quite different from 2007’s version. I’m sure on 2-3 years ie. well within the lifecycle of the new iPad Pro that iOS will have made significant strides.
@@kafkaspen by that time it will probably lag, and it's apple to tell you get a new ipads, no matter how powerful it is apple has the magic to slow it down somehow, you will definitely need an upgrade
It's probably for illustrators.
I agree. I am wondering what you are doing on your iPad that takes up 1tb of storage. I thought the same thing with the note 9 but I think samsung wanted it towards youtubers to be able to record videos since videos do take up more space. So I dont think a youtuber will haul a iPad pro around to record videos lol so just wondering what you would use 1TB. I did hear that they are trying to get adobe to work on this. That could take up some space but again not that much. I dont know I think it is an overkill as well.
@@neiotik Probably the 120Mhz touchscreen and the pen is better and more responsive. It would be like people getting the iPad for MS Office.
The new iPadOS fixes most all of the “issues” talked about in this video.
I'm not a pro creator, but have migrated much of my work when the first 12 inch pro came out. This is just upping the game for me and the apps that I have been using have already adapted the ecosystem.
Apple doesn’t want you to replace your laptop with its iPads. They know what they’re doing. They saw that when they created the iPhone and put iTunes in it, it made the iPod Classic dispensable. So why would they create a tablet that can be full functioning and do everything your laptop can? That would just make their laptops obsolete.. and they’re not ready to see people not buy their laptops anymore.
magnakid tablets are good for artists
Not talking about replacing professional solutions such as macbook pros, obviously professional musicians, editors etc will stick to those cuz of the ecosystem and processing power... but come on, calling a device a pro solution and not allowing external storage to be hooked up?! not talking about touch screen which already limits professional applications of the device...
There's actually nothing about the iPad that is holding it back from replacing a laptop for most people. Only the software is the limiting factor. Developers aren't pouring enough resources into it yet. The desktop app killers are limited.
Liquid retina actually means LCD screen with INSANE pixel masking in order to make the corners any shape you want... This is actually very impressive !
Why is it impressive? A lot of other manufacturers already have this technology? Take Samsung as an example. But then again Apple will be most innovative company when they invent the curved display in a couple of years.

Make an update to this video!! iPad OS is here and changes the entire interaction with the hardware.
The ipad is my favourite device from all i could buy from apple
I love iPads but I reckon iOS is the only limiting factor
Same here, I really want one of these iPads, but I cannot justify $1000 on what I know will just be a RUclips player.... that can't play in 4k. There's honestly no reason for anyone to buy the spec'd up iPad unless you like throwing money away for shiny things.
Yeah the hardware is good but ios is useless even compared to android, even more so compared to windows.
MAC OS is also useless compared to Windows
@@trentbosnic with Windows or even Linux, it's no limitation ever
Apple doesnt think you are adult enough to handle a real file structure.
Tech reviewers and apple needs to understand that 'PRO' exists outside of just video editing and paint. Workflow for engineers, software developers, data scientist or just university students in general also exist and should be considered. That is why I think ChromeOS is the only 'pro' device alternative to Macs and Windows desktop OS. With linux app support you can do all your data analysis natively , write your paper with proper citation manager (mendeley with libreoffice) without using your Windows or macs.
The first half of what you wrote could have been copy and pasted from my posts we agree so much. The ChromOS bit - well, I'm not so sold on that! But then my field of development would not work on it at all, so.....
Let me know when you can run VS Code or Eclipse on ChromeOS without these IDEs being treated like compromised after-thoughts.
Or Visual Studio.....
Rather than saying chrome os is suitable for professionals because linux, it might be better to say linux is suitable for professionals. As far as I can tell, linux applications on chrome is still a bit hacky, and only on certain hardware, whereas most linux distributions will run on pretty much anything.
Richard Du it isn't even suitable for video professionals
No external storage support, this is totally bad for this new iPad w/ type-c.
but that performance still great, and have great 120Hz Screen, it just fine for me.

9:50 Just to clarify, taping the lock screen to open Notes is not a Pencil gen 2 feature, it also works with the old Pencil and the regular iPad.
Luckily it sounds like many of these problems can be addressed via software, so if Apple's listening, maybe we'll get some of this functionality in iOS 13
Keep dreaming. These are forced software limitations so people buy Macbooks. As long as iPads use iOS, you'll never see them as functional as their laptops.
Sahil M I wouldn't be so sure. I see a future where MacBooks don't exist and are replaced entirely by iPads. I firmly believe this is the direction Apple is working towards. Why make this iPad such a powerhouse if not? They just need time.

They had to come up with some bs name. Imagine watching the keynote announcement and they come out with a headline feature being "It now has rounded corners!"... maybe one or two people clap. Even though it's really cool from a technical standpoint, it just doesn't have much of a wow-factor so some people in marketing probably sat around a table and asked themselves, "What is the coolest name we can come up with for an uncool feature?"
This the my third iPad after I traded in my iPad pro 10.5'. The best iPad ever made and it releases the full potential that any iPad users expect for some of functions a laptop possesses. This new gen of iPad is a leap from its predecessor. It is capable of a 'light' office working while you are on the go.

We are finally getting there.
I feel ios keeps the iPad pro line from its full potential. Let it run Mac OS X and it would give the surface pro a run for its money.
Or perhaps, it would give Microsoft Xbox a run for its money if it could play big title games.
Until then, the iPad pro line is just a bigger iPad that supports a stylus and allows for keyboards to connect differently.

The only thing that has excited me about the iPad Pro is the fact it uses USB-C and having no notch while having FaceID. The rest is the same old really.
@@PetrFlosman well, then those people aren't using their laptop to it's potential. If you want a laptop to browse and watch videos iPad pro is definitely a replacement.

@@PetrFlosman The thing is that the iPad Pro is so overpriced. You can get much stronger, while cheaper devices, than the iPad Pro without the need of being limited by the iOS. Honestly, I think all of the latest Apple products have been overpriced, and while they are good, they are not good enough to cover the expensive price
the answer depends on what the user needs. for example: if the user needs powerful software that doesn’t have an app equivalent then no; but for me who will use it for art then yes, of course there are tablet/laptop that are cheaper out there like the surface pro 6 but artwise apple pencil is better. and now there’s going to be a photoshop app. this ipad is significantly cheaper than the wacom mobilestudio (the best in the art pen display computer).

Well, I guess that's why they say that's it's "like a computer, unlike any computer" ;) They always aim for it to be a powerful tablet, not the "jack of all trades" like the Surface or Pixelbbook line, and they make it quite clear.
How's that iPad even a Pro, if we cannot connect a flash drive with that USB-C port?
that's what i saying all the time.
exactly, it need iOS PRO edition .
Pro is shorten of procratination
Sagar Tayde it can. Just download an app. And why would you use flash drives when you can just use iCloud or google drive?
DragonTechRoyale4k because maybe not everyone have fast internet connection available all the time?
u don’t make sense or if so why are we keeping USB drive support in laptops too?
It's double the price of my now laptop. But it's cheaper than the laptop I want. And it feels very convenient and suffices my needs. So I feel like I should rather get this than a laptop.
For a college student who just uses this for notes, writing essays and basic use is this fine or should one get a MacBook Pro?
The issue with trying to use the iPad (pro) as a laptop is the software not the hardware. I have the (now) last gen 10.5 that I bought to use with procreate for drawings which it did very well. Thereafter I tried my best to make more use of it, but the file system/ Files app is absolutely terrible.
Wonderful review. Detail, arguments and explanayions. It's sad to hear that it still can't truely be used as a computer and no ext-storage kind of frustrates me.
So much power but no way of really using it... but Apple isn't even close to thinking about a "Windows 10"-like iPadOS, with Apps AND Programs compatibility.
Factory 23 if macbook and ipad pro has the same price... why is that the ipad has less to offer... is it just a product for show in public?
@Factory 23 get a real windows computer
Thank you
@Factory 23 Macs barely have support for most programs tbh.
I have the previous version and this one. my review is I like it more than the last one. My review is done.
this guy gives one of the most robust and complete review of a tech product on all of youtube. Well inormed, Well paced and overall a fanatstic reviewer!! keep it up man, love the reviews
It's time for Apple to design a new OS specifically for iPad.
Amen!
iOS 13 will be pretty huge for the iPad. According to leaks before iOS 12 even came out
Apple is so smart, they know exactly how to make us buy the next product. Even when they make breakthroughs, they always hold back.
What breakthroughs? Lmao
I also noticed that they don’t have a mouse/touchpad mode which is frustrating if you want to use word or excel.
Thanks for saving me the trouble of buying and returning the iPad pro. The ability to use USB storage is the only thing that would cause me to upgrade and they dorked that... no iPad pro for me.
In typical Apple fashion the limitations of this device are not a function of technology, but the intentions of marketing.
One Example of Capitalism isn't suiting Humanity. Capitalism kills Everythings.
See, I think people use “marketing” as a catch-all phrase for any sleazy business tactic used by any company. That’s not what the word means. Apple’s decision to limit the device to push people to buy a MacBook is a sales-tactic, not marketing. It might be a frustrating, greed-inspired sales tactic, but that doesn’t somehow change it to marketing.
This is a great review, really hits the key points. Even though this iPad is leagues ahead of any other tablet in a lot of ways, I think I'd rather get a Microsoft Surface Pro or even a Pixel Slate because they have more flexible operating systems.
other than the processor which it cant take advantage of, how is it ahead? no oled screen, no good multitasking , no external storage support like the Tab S4...
S Khan you seem to be spamming a lot of commenters about the new iPad Pro. Hellz no to OLED screens. I’ve seen more burn in and light bleed on OLEDS than I can count. Apples XS screen looks better than most OLEDS anyways. You also don’t need external HD if you have 1TB of of storage. Now go get a life, get off RUclips and stop spamming commenters.
@@HeyIntegrity lol the oled screen on tab 4 is trash compared to even this ips display. Naming isn't everything (yes in know pixels are individually lit but doesn't matter if those pixels don't look good). The actualy display is just miles better. oh yeah and double the display rate. and wtf the multitasking on ipad pro is sooo much better than the tab 4 at multitasking, and don't even get me started on how much more powerful the cpu and gpu are. battery life is much further. ill give you one thing, external storage, but cameras, neural engine, processor, cpu, gpu, display, design, quality, support, apps, ecosystem, intuitivity, biometrics, pencil, accessories, connectors, antennas all go to the pro
That’s a relief, you don’t have to buy it, thank god for a Microsoft pro
Microsoft soft pro😂
Great review. Nice to hear some honesty about the software limitations holding back such impressive hardware.
Dear human from November 2018..... I come from the future (July 2019 to be exact) and I'm here to bring you this message: iPadOS !!!
