Ryobi used to use slide on packs when everyone else used stick packs.
Ryobi switched to stick packs, then everyone else started to switch to slide on packs.
To be honest, with battery adapters now widely available, there is nothing stopping Ryobi from switching back to slide on packs and selling adapters to use the new packs on old kit.
In fact, I am surprised TTi haven't made a range of official adapters to allow the use of Rigid and Milwaukee batteries on Ryobi products. I have an adapter that allows me to use my Milwaukee packs on my Ryobi tools. I also picked up a Ryobi jigsaw that had a Makita to Ryobi adapter for £18 from my local Cash Converter shop.

Ryobi got some good stuff and some not so good. We had a fleet of tools from them before I convinced upper management to get us some better tools. We ran a hybrid fleet of ryobi and dewalt. Ryobi tools that suck that we insisted the company buy us literally any other brand for:
      - Brad nailer, Every one we had couldn't fire a 1.5 inch brad nail fully into 1/2 baseboard through drywall into a stud without the head showing and they jammed.
      - The low end drills have a TERRIBLE delay in the gorilla-tool interface (the trigger) and the variable speed function shit the bed and became full tilt with a small press after no time.
      - The oscillating tools just underpowered and dont like drywall dust at all.
      The good:
      - Cordless circular saws, has the 6 1/4 saw. Good for everything you'd use a tiny circ on. put a good blade, and you're having fun, don't build cabinets with em.
      - The better drills. good enough. Ditto for the impacts at least for screw driving.
      - the jigsaws. Variable speed with a slider instead of with the trigger, easy to adjust the shoe, deep stroke length, used all the blade.
      - the weird stuff. Ryobi makes cordless tools that aren't normally cordless, and use the same batteries as everything else
      - the baby cordless sds hammer drill. We only ever used it for tap-cons for mounting closet tracks. 3/16 bit. cheap compared to any other cordless sds drill. use a bigger battery.

Mows the whole lawn with half the battery left. I've also had the attachment capable 40v string trimmer for many years, it works amazingly. I do landscaping for work (with gas equipment) and the ryobi trimmer has the same power as a Stihl gas trimmer. The 40v blowers are also fantastic, have tons of power with the turbo mode. I've been using the 18v Ryobi lawn equipment for the better part of the last 10 years or so. I've been using the 18v 16" single battery mower for 1.5 seasons now. I probably should have gone with the 2 battery 18v mower that runs one after the other as opposed to the 36v version because sometimes runtime is a bit short on hotter days or days when grass is a bit long. Other than that, can't complain. I only use the 18v 4Ah on my lawn equipment.

The reason I use Ryobi cordless (even professionally) is because my DeWalt set got stolen in 2001 or so, and I needed something cheap to get me by. I figured I would replace the Ryobi tools when they broke. They didn't break, and they performed better than expected. Still not DeWalt performance, but good enough especially for about 1/5 the price.
The thing that kept me using Ryobi was their tool selection. When most of those brands were finally releasing recip saws and circular saws, Ryobi had those, and was making cordless rotozips, routers, miter saws, and caulk guns among many other tools.
Now don't get me wrong, Ryobi still makes entry level stuff, and a lot (A LOT) of it is junk. But their higher end stuff is generally good, often on par or sometimes better than TTI's Ridgid cordless tools. While some brands make 1 or 2 versions of the same tool, Ryobi will make 3 or 4.
There's truth that Ryobi is TTI's R&D department, but sometimes they hit it out of the park. The airstrike brad nailer for instance.

Everything from lawn stuff to drills to glue guns up to wood working and saws of all types. I'm not a contractor. I love these videos, but actually no; HART is the lowest tier of power-tools that is part of the TTI family. Ryobi is the next step up from HART. Also.... _Craftsman_ isn't deceased. Stanley Black&Decker paid $900 Million to acquire the brand. They're pushing Craftsman power-tools very aggressively at Lowe's (and slightly less aggressively at Ace Hardware). But they paid THAT much, you better believe they are promoting the heck out of the brand! Actually, most of the newer brushless Craftsman tools are older model DeWalts with a red paint job.
Porter Cable is the brand that is on life-support. Craftsman was bought to take over for P.C. Heck, only place you can buy P.C. from a Brick & Mortar store is Tractor Supply. Yeah, let's do a palate of Craftsman! Most of them are going to be older and slightly underpowered DeWalt tools.

As former Apt Maintenance I would give them a solid 8. I have used them for everything as a beginner, but once you get to bigger jobs yea they can’t keep up but for the avg household owner that is definitely enough for your daily needs. I would recommend their multi pack to any beginner to intermediate maintenance just needing a quick set up for the job.

I’ve had a cordless Ryobi edge trimmer and blower for probably 10 years and the blower still works like new. I use it in my shop everyday as well as the yard. The edge trimmer still works, but I can’t bump it to lengthen the string, so do that manually. I also have the same mouse sander, a multi-tool, and recently bought their hedge trimmer, all cordless as well. I bought them when there was a sale or one of the bogo deals they have a couple times each year. Some of their tools, especially lawn tools are great for the money.

For the DIY homeowner, the 18v One+ line is great. They're cheap, available, and have a giant lineup of tools. I have plenty of Ryobi 18v stuff for only working around the house and they have all answered what I have asked them to do. There's also something to be said about a line of tools that the old blue NiCad tools, many of which are 20+ years old now, can still operate on the new lithium batteries.

A lot of Ryobi returns are likely to new in box. Ryobi regularly offers a promo where you pay $99 for a 2 battery set and get a free tool with it, from a list of preselected tools. People will then return the tool and keep the batteries at ~half their normal cost. The lawn tools are more common to do this with because they are higher cost, and the higher the cost of the item you are returning relative to the $99 cost of the battery set, the more you get returned.
