- The first zipper I ever stitched was an invisible zipper, with a REGULAR zipper foot, cuz I didn't know any better! Now it's my favorite zip, and my favorite method of stitching it.

“My zip seam allowance is 5/8ths of an inch, so I’m going to cut my interfacing at 1 inch wide by however long my zipper is.” Then I introduce my ironing board.
The reason for those measurements is explained cleanly right after. Will try to fix that audio-and will definitely get to your questions in the next 24 hours! 💗💗💗

Gooey goodness cookies..hmmm...it is 9:37 pm here so I won't be having any of those. I have yet to try a zipper. We are in a mini lockdown here in Switzerland so I will watch your great videos of until I get my materials to tackle this. Thank you for the entertainment and good instructions.

Okay, you’ve convinced me. At age 72 I’ll try my first invisible zipper.
I fell in love with invisible zippers the first time I used one as a teen, and found it so much easier to do than a regular zipper. Never have used anything else since. 50+ years

I have been sewing for many years, and I still learn new things every time I watch a sewing video. I had never thought about using interfacing to support a zipper, but it does sound like a great idea, especially for thinner fabrics. I love invisible zippers for lots of applications because they are...well, invisible once they are installed. Instead of doing a separate basting step, I tend to use wash-away Wonder Tape to place the zipper exactly where I want it. I find that it makes the zipper lay flatter before stitching. Sometimes pins can make a zipper a little more wavy, although it looks like you are using very fine silk pins, which will help.

me too. My Girl Scout leader was a fashion designer. She gave us a great how to on the new, amazing, invisible zipper at her home. It was a social gathering for the sewers in the troop. Anyway, it is all I use in garments.
I remember thinking they were groovy. Yah, I was a bit of a hippie and having a zipper that didn't show was fantastic.

Love the video. I did my first invisible zipper in 22” pillows. Another key to invisible zippers is to buy ones longer than you need for your project.
YES. I’ve given up buying short invisible zips, they’re so easy to shorten yourself!
Wow, I thought I had the most accommodating and loving husband in the world. I am so happy to see there are more great men out there. Although I hear from my eight sisters-in laws that my brothers are doing wonderful. Anyway about the amazing Invisible Zipper. . . I still have my original invisible zipper foot. NOW, it will be heading into the vintage sewing tools museum. I am so excited to use the zipper foot for my machine. AND the tircott fusible interfacing! OMG just knowing I can do this step, my quality of life just improved.

I learned to put in an invisible zip in 2002. This is definitely more work than how I so it but looks so much better. Literally seamless 😍

Thanks for taking the time to teach us how to up our sewing skills! Getting ready to install my first invisible zipper! Suggestion for a tutorial: how to finish seams. I've been zigzagging, should I be zig zagging all edges before I sew seams? Or trim seams and zig zap edges together? I hadn't sewn for decades until the mask fashion craze. Now I'm excited to fit patterns to my shape. Oh, another suggestion how to alter a pattern to personal measurements. Thanks! Peace out!

Okay, WOW, this was SO helpful for my zippers (which, no matter what I've tried in the past, somehow end up with a skirt that doesn't line up from side to side). I've been putting off finishing a new dress because I was dreading the invisible (or any, really) zipper. Thank you for this!

❤️ ❤️ ❤️ the invisible zipper. I use them on everything I can. More forgiving than a conventional zipper. I keep interfacing strips in a bag, ready to go when I need them. I’ve never seen the zipper basted like this. I’ll try it. Also, one of my invisible zipper feet has a groove that goes over the coils. Have you tried that style?
Ah yes, I love setting up a go-bag of interfacing! (the first invisible zip foot I tried had grooves for the coils, just didn’t get as close for me!)
YOu what I want to see Marcy? This may sound so basic, but things like sewing straight, and cutting straight ( not all jagged like I do) I know it's about surfaces too, so how to create a good sewing base, table top counter top on a budget ( money is toight!) etcetera etcetera. Also how to sew when you arent the best with mathematicals. I noticed that good sew-ees reel off numbers that can be confusing. I even heard someone use a slope formula!waaaaht. Great vid, thank you

I've had trouble getting invisible zippers right. Got so mad at them that I started making lapped zips, but those don't look good on every garment. You're kind to mention who taught this to you. I never heard of interfacing zips either, but will now! When my Auntlings graduate to higher level projects, we'll watch your videos together and practice!

Q. There seemed to be about six inches of zipper left that wasn't sewn down. Do you cut off the excess zipper tail? If so how much of the zipper do you leave before you cut off the excess so the zipper doesn't come all the way undone?
Do you draft your own patterns from your bodice block. I finally have a great fitting block and I’m having a hard time figuring out where to start when designing dress bodices. Help!! Love your explanation of invisible zipper but.......what do you do with the tail of the zipper?
Excellent question! If using the zipper as-purchased, with the original stop, I either add a lining (which hides the zip end-or, if it will be exposed on the interior in a lighter dress, I encase the bottom in matching fabric. If you’ve cut the end of your zip, you can zigzag tightly across the coil to make a “stop” out of thread. But I’ll add a “finishing touches” video to the list!

I inserted an invisible zipper in a purchased jumpsuit to make it easier to get on and off. It took all day, no telling how many videos I watched before and during. Well, still haven’t worn the jumpsuit, not sure if its a zipper thing, or something else.

Your front 'cleavage' comment reminded me... could you show how to apply a facing to the upper edge of the zipper? I have always found that edge a pain to do, especially if it has to fold back and the wrong side shows, like at the neckline.

Should place a 'stopper' of thread going over the teeth of zipper, from both left and right sides...going over many times...then should be able to cut off rest or just buy the correct lenght. When the swap meeet was happening, precovid...bought 10 zippers for $5.00!

Yes I third the wise sewists that have stepped up! Actually, I always buy my zips in 22 inch length, since it’s so easy to add your own zigzagged zipper stop and shorten them as much as you like. Just make sure you put the stop in before you unzip it, ask me how I know 🙄
I am enrolled at Oonaversity but I may be at the bottom of the class as this made me go "huh?" quite a few times. Then I looked at it some more and I hope to eventually get it. I agree -- elastic in waistbands would be a great class! Also, please check the sound from 4:40 to 5:30 as the narration sounds twice dubbed (and I watched it three times to make sure I wasn't having a stroke). (Like in The Merchan of Venice: "The quality of narration is not strained. It is twice dubbed...") Thanks.

hey Sharon! For me it depends on what the garment finish- if it’s going to be lined, I zigzag across the coils about snip 1 1/2 inches below where the zipper stops, and then cut the tape and inch below that. if it’s unlined, I do the same, but I like to use a piece of the fashion fabric to encase the unsightly end of the tape. Great question, I ought to do a video on that!
Do you just leave the excess zipper hanging inside the garment or do you clip it off?
I’ll have to do a “finishings” lesson! I leave about 3 inches of zip tail, and add a thread stop if needed. It’s nice to encase the end in fashion fabric, if you’re not lining the garment.

I just put in my first invisible zipper (so much prettier and easier than the old way) THANK YOU! Now can't wait to see how the hanging zipper finishes.

Isn't your garment usually seemed togetherthen you put a zipper in?
with a regular zipper, yes- but with an invisible zip you want the seam left open before inserting, otherwise it’s hard to get the bottom inserted correctly. However, Kenneth King uses a hemostat to insert an invisible zipper *after* the garment is seamed, I’ve been meaning to try it!
Only you would have a magenta press cloth. You love to live dangerously. :-)

That was so easy to follow, i haven't put a zipper on for AGES! LIKE maybe 20 yrs ago??? when I qas making skirts and 👗 ,(way long ago like. B.F./before kiddos..eldest is 34 and youngest 23. )Dont think I've ever put in an invisible zipper. And never interface the edges!
What I would like to learn ...is an easier way to actually measure [my boobies- to make custom fitted tops , eithee with darts or maybe a ' gather', bust area???]
Have actually "copy" a favorite nightgown, halter style just from a self - 'paper-pattern' to sew...didnt turn out that bad!

Do you mean, it’s hard to measure yourself on your own? Or what techniques might fit the ladies the best?

Meant measuring for my particular size , have gain weight since my 30s! But for 3 grown kids, im not that bad - short , so I've always had to hem pants ! Since menopause nit tires a "flat tire' around my waist, not inflated, but a tire...and my breasts not ever big,or even medium are slightly saggy (if only ,i was breast feeding, could believe it then!) So clothes to fit nice at breast line are, like empire style, feel snug at waist level, anything to fit waist are always too long, at 5ft.
But watching your vid have inspire me to sew more for me now? Since clothes shopping is kinda not a thing with Covid19...do have patterns, from a million yr ago, and know "how to shorten,pattern", whuch ive done...

How about next lesson... PLEATS. I love pleats but always stay away from them because I don't know much of the material to cut and how wide to make the pleats so that at the end the pleated part matches in length the non pleated part to which it attaches to. :-/ What is the secret formula behind it? It's gotta be one :-)

But of course, if you can and have the patience it would be greatly appreciate it if you could show everything from scratch as some of the ladies may not have the additional feet.
