I made a top and a dress following this tutorial to find they make perfect skirts!! I didn't expect this technic could be so easy. It took me less than 2 hours per garment thanks to your detailed instructions and tips. Thank you so much, Marcy! you are a great inspiration and a wonderful teacher. Many hugs and kisses from Gozo, Malta :****
OMG you two are just the cutest. Thank you so much for the videos and making learning so fun. You make me laugh and learn so I have no "sewing sadness". I wanted to try shirring but had no idea how to do it. Thank you and cherish each other every moment. I miss my husband every day since his passing in 2005. You remind me of the joy we shared, so you two hold on tight to each other. Have a great day and thank you again.
You make me want to make this now and I’ve never made a top! I’ve looked into elastic thread but you made the winding seem so straightforward and not intimidating at all! You’re such a joy, you and your hubby too!
Marcy, You both always make me smile, and now my husband is converted. I love to sew and we both love to play in our Samba band 'Beatroots'. 🇬🇧A match made in heaven after 37years Marriage. Thank you for your content. I have yet to replace my denim jacket panels, looking for the right embroidered material. Have a great weekend in the kitchen. 😅
@@handmadeharriells I did mine 70s style, where the entire top is shirred. It has been up to 103 degrees in this desert and this silhouette has helped me survive the heat.....
So much fun. I did this once for my god daughters. The three of them each had a different color summer dresses made of checkered fabric and matching ribbons for the straps and for their hair. It always turns out too blasted cute!
Ta-tas! You don’t hear that reference much anymore. Love your videos. One of the suggestions I’ve heard for making to shirring tighten up is to pass over the shirring with steam. It’s kind of like magic.
I've always meant to find a project to use the elastic thread on. Thanks for this. When I first read the shirring part of the title I thought maybe you were using a shirring foot on your Featherweight. Those little presser feet are fun. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Oh Marcy THANK YOU!!!!! The shirring video I asked for THANK YOU! I know you said you two have been watching "Friends" but it looks like Rob has been watching some horror movies the way he was sharpening that knife👀 Now might I ask for another instructional video? How about using 2inch elastic for a waistband. Actually, I'm trying to decide which I might use in place of an encased elastic waist. Shirring or 2inch elastic waistband.... You make instructional videos FUN and ENJOYABLE to watch.
You are so welcome, Penny! I think you saw my tiered skirt tutorial, but there’s an elastic insertion there: ruclips.net/video/HIE825H2HIo/видео.html That’s for a one inch waistband, I think 2 inches might get uncomfortable…you might want to safety pin a 2 inch elastic around your waist for a minute and see how it feels! (and yeah, Rob had been on a horror movie vibe lately 🤣🤣🤣but the food was GOOOOOOOD)
@@handmadeharriells you bet I watched the skirt video, I don't skip your videos. The type of waistband I'm thinking of isn't encased, it's a wider elastic that you attach directly to the waist, like the elastic adds to the fashion of the skirt or pants. Exposed elastic waist.
Thought that you were going to miss stitch length there, you didnt.😁 French seam lasts the longest, now we have a long lasting garment that is only time controlled by the lifetime of the elastic. Beautiful the extra sleeves cover my nature lady arms. L Birdy
Oh good! Now I want to try shirring since you managed to break it down so nicely. Also helps that I have the Janome HD 5000 which is this one’s big brother. Nice to see a new video from you. Don’t let that man get too hangry! 🤣
So good to see you. Hi Rob. Love the top. You explained the use of the elastic thread so well that it looks like something I could try. Thanks for showing us how you do it.
I have a 1948 sewing magazine with shirred swimsuits where they line it with a thin fabric and sew rows of stitching in the two together and insert thin elastic in the resulting channels. That may be an option?
I think Beth’s option is great- to be honest I’ve never seen a line shirred garment, but I’ll give it a think….also, the thread I’ve linked doesn’t irritate me at all, though I’m sure that’s a case by case issue. I can’t stand socks against my skin!
@@handmadeharriells Yup, it will be very case by case. I have atopic skin, I find tights itchy for example; this conversation made me realise that if I ever go for the elasticated look (I've been eyeing shirred 1970s styles, too), I should opt for the 1940s version to be safe!
Thank you for the video / so enjoyable and fun. Please can you show to use sleeves to make ( I really like look with sleeves too) Thank again for your time.
Thank you so much for this!! I’ve been wanting to try this, but all the tutorials I have seen just say “hand wind the bobbin” with no specifics!! (I sure hope Rob got to eat!!) 😁❤️😘

Great video. The best yet. Very detailed. Love 💗. One thing, if i run out of sheer elastic mid row, what do i do? Do i bavk stitch over previous few stitches?
Marcy! Now I can put that elastic of mine that's been collecting dust on my thread rack to use because I NOW know how to use it!! Now Rob... you made us miss the next best part... THE SLEEVES! Marcy, we need some of those sleeves. Rob, I always love you, but you were a titch scary with that 🔪. I might be able to find you a referral to some anger management or something. 🤣😂🤣 Either way, I absolutely love you two!
🤣🤣🤣don’t worry he’s just a very good actor. Now, if I put him in red gingham shorts that might me a different story. Yes grab that elastic! If it’s been growing dust for a minute just check that it still has it’s elasticity 😉
