- In another week of Q and A, I dive into more difficult questions, which include: Unpopular opinions, the definition of hobby rareness, and deceptive ebay listings. We discuss players like Willie Mays, Jim Brown, Jackie Robinson, and many more. Rookie cards, oddball cards, and even regular base cards are topics of conversation this week. As always, if you have a question for an upcoming episode, don't hesitate to ask it in the comments section of this video!!

In an Microwave society, your slow roasted quality content is refreshing. Please don't change. You have grown the way you have by being yourself and sacrificing that for the sake of cutting length just doesn't feel right. It aint broke.
I appreciate that very much.
I personally enjoy the length of your videos! Very analytical and informative!
Thanks a lot. I appreciate that.
Great episode. Let me answer the CGC CSG ? First I love there slabs , the reason they will never reach the same prices as PSA or SGC is due to there grading standards. It is very easily seen on there vintage graded cards that they grade much easier. I put them a tiny notch above BVG scale. So almost any of there vintage graded cards would grade lower with PSA and most likely SGC as well. As far as trust goes with them I trust them completely and would have no problem having every single one of my cards in there slabs. Its simply that us collectors realize they grade to easy on vintage so the market discounts the cards in there slabs. Now ofcourse thats my experience and my opinion. The Modern market is completely different for grading.
I have some green label CSG 7s and I am pretty confident they would cross to SGC 7s. PSA just depends on how the grader that you get feels.
Having the same people grade modern and vintage is such an interesting thing, and my hope is that it's rarely done by the grading companies. They are two completely different animals/species.
Q&A question: Right now I am in between cards. I have gotten a lot of enjoyment in saving up for bigger cards this year. Right now I have some money to spend, but don't have a card that I'm very excited about. There are a bunch of mid-level type cards that I'd like, but that I don't feel passionate about. Would you continue to save your card budget, even if you don't know what its for, or would you spend on some $30 - $50 cards to fill in some spots in your collection, but won't have the impact that a larger card would have.
Good question. I'll share my thoughts on this one soon.
I like longer videos. When I lay down to decompress, I dont want to have to "change the channel" every 7-12 minutes.
Thanks Will!! I appreciate that!!
Hi Graig. Great episode with some really good question. I always enjoy your answer and opinions, whether I agree or disagree. Talk soon my friend.
Thanks bud.
I mostly agree with you on what’s rare. Your golf example was a good one. Everybody has a different definition on what’s rare. Seeing a card on ebay doesn’t disqualify it from being rare. Some people list rare cards for crazy prices that will never sell. I agree sold cards on ebay would be a better gauge. I mention pop reports all the time on my videos. Those reports can be misleading on what’s truly rare. For instance, I recently picked up a 1911 Matty cutout. PSA has only graded my copy. But, I’m sure more are out there. But, it’s a weird shape, and some older collectors don’t care to grade something like that. Or, don’t like to grade at all. Non traditional size cards, like post cards are not always graded. And your Blackbeard, it might be extremely rare, I have no idea, But, since it’s not a sports cards,is that card something somebody would normally grade? How about a common pre war player. The pop on his American caramel card might be 5 is that rare? I would say no. Where a babe Ruth from the same set may have a pop of 100. My thinking is the set itself rare. Have I seen a card from the set sold in the last couple of years. Not graded, but a card.
REALLY REALLY great points. It's kind of impossible to answer a question like that, because of all of the examples you mention. I think there are so many variables. Ultimately, buying cards that we like that aren't "commonly found" is usually a pretty good rule of thumb to go by. Partly, because the hunt is part of the fun!!
@midlife Sports Cards - I listen to baseball card collector content at work (I do a lot of menial tasks). I usually don't even bother to listen to content that is less than 30 minutes and frequently find myself settling in to a 2-3 hour video. I will never complain about the Length of your videos. I'd rather have something I can get into and proceed thoughtfully.
Thanks. I sure enjoy going into detail into how I feel the way I do.
I like long videos. It’s an investment. I always learn a lot. I mostly collect hockey these days. Very rarely baseball anymore (though I have a few). But I recently started getting back into football cards too. In fact, I also collect vintage pennants and recently completed my AFL collection. That said, I’ve decided I want to try to acquire one copy of ever AFL card made. I specialize in low grade raw cards. I collect I don’t invest. I love the history. That said? AFL cards aren’t cheap at all. Maybe it’s the rarity. Idk. But I am rethinking my decision.
I don't much about AFL cards, but I'm always interested in learning new stuff.
@@MidLifeCards oh I just meant the 1960s Fleer and Topps cards of the old American Football League. I like defunct leagues like the ABA or WHA too.
Gave a video like. Always enjoy these Q & A episodes. Great video
Thanks so much.
Enjoyable video! I love the rare / scarce discussion. I know it’s a matter of opinion but rare to me in our hobby translates to a very low population of the card. Scarce relates more to availability and can be created by high demand, or low supply. Toilet paper was scarce during the early stages of Covid.
Makes sense.
Fair point.
Really good Q&A! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I’m with you on the 51 Bowman Mays > 52 Topps Mays. Especially enjoyed the talk on CSG and trust of third party graders. Awesome discussion as always! 👊
Thanks Shane. Still waiting on video from the concert last night!!
I collect 95 % pre 1986 baseball
BUT - some of the neatest looking cards are older football in my opinion. 70s football cards look “old” compared to 70s baseball cards. Maybe it’s because the football players themselves are toothless, bald, and beat to heck. But when I can, I try to pick up random older football. At the local card shop last week I picked up a few 1970 Kellogg’s football for 10 bucks and love looking at those.
Also - older football was produced in far fewer qty than baseball. So like you, I think that older football is rarer and undervalued
Thank you for the thought provoking opinions as always
I totally agree about vintage Football cards.
Hey Graig, don’t listen to anyone that complains about how long your videos last! I like the length. You are very informative and fun to watch. As far as who you look like, I was thinking a mature Liam Hemsworth 😅
''just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it.”
LOL. Thanks Tony!!
I just got back from a week long trip and wow, you’re really pumping out the content! I need to get caught up. Great stuff as always!
Yeah. I try to put out about 4 per week. Sometimes it's 5 and sometimes it's 3....but usually 4.
I think your videos are a great length! Not everyone can or should get away with such long ones, but you can!
Thanks so much!!
My unpopular opinion? I think most autographed cards look awful and detract from the card itself. There are a few exceptions I can think of (Ken Griffey Jr., Mariano Riveira) who have gorgeous signatures.
I get that. Especially some of the modern signatures.
what makes Greg Morris listings fun is that somebody over there has to evaluate the condition of every card he lists and there are thousands of cards listed each night. surely, once in a while, a card will be better than what it has been advertised (or worse.) I've bought raw cards from GM that were part of my first SGC submission. Among other variances, I had an EX-EXMINT come back a 7 (which is what I thought and had hoped for,) another EX-EXMINT come back a 8 (!) on a card that I thought looked amazing. but I also had a NR-MINT come back a 6 and a NR-MINT or BETTER come back only a 7. not all NR-MINT or BETTER cards sell through the roof. it does depend on how the card looks and the speculating some buyers must be doing, thinking they can get a 9 or possibly even a 10. I certainly would not crack an 8 and try to sell it raw via GM although it was a decent thought worth considering.
That's good info. I appreciate you sharing your personal experience. I've never purchased from them, so I wouldn't know how that all goes.
Well, Joe Gatto is my favorite Joker, so maybe that’s why I enjoy your content. I think the length of your material is great, because you keep it interesting throughout the entire time. I’m with you on Geoff Wilson, he has made a lot of mistakes, but overall he has filled a niche in the hobby. CSG slabs are awesome, but they aren’t going to make a move anytime soon. Keep up the good work.
Joe Gatto is the best. He's handsome, too!! :-)
Personally, I hope SGC doesn't get flooded by hundreds of thousands of Pokemon and Magic the Gathering cards every month. PSA can keep 'em.
LOL. Yeah. Part of me wishes SGC stayed with just vintage, but I realize that at some point, they'd run out of submissions, so they need to be willing to adopt others types of cards.
I have a question for you . I collect now mostly 1970s and early 80s rookie Hall of fame players for my great grandson to have when he gets to be in his 20s . Do you believe that a lot of those cards are undervalued right now and are a good hold for someone down the road 20 years for now ?
I think this is a great question. I'll share my thoughts on this topic soon.
In one of your recent videos you mentioned, that your local card show had a lot of Pokémon cards. So here, is my question. If you were to create your own Mid Life Sports Card Show, with you being able to promote, and organize the show, what would it look like, to stand out from other card shows? Would you have live music and a DJ? How about pizzas? Mushrooms and onions, but seriously would there be pizza!? What about grown men wearing Pirates costumes, well, maybe not that. But it wouldn't be a terrible idea. Seriously though, don't forget the mushrooms and onions on, my pizza too.
I've added this one to the list.
You definitely look like Spahn. Did you pitch in HS?
Love the show.
I was a middle infielder. I didn't play baseball in high school because it was the same season as the golf team. I decided to play on the golf team instead and had a lot of fun doing that. Primarily, I was a shortstop. That was my natural position.
I agree with everything you shared your opinion on except, you look more like Spahn.
LOL. Yeah, we have similar noses, for sure.
Graig, I don’t think your videos are long, I just think you go into much more detail than other sports collectors. 😊
Thanks. I like doing videos the way they do them. So, the plan is to continue that style!! :-)
@@MidLifeCards You’re welcome. Glad to hear you’re not planning on changing it up. You have your style and it’s what makes your channel different and refreshing.
Great stuff, thanks for sharing your thoughts
Thanks for watching!
Question for you. I’m a PSA collector and I have some Beckett and old SGC slabs. Should I send them to PSA to crossover? What is the chance they will grade the same?
Thank you for your opinion!
Great question. I'll share my opinion on this one soon.
Length & content are right on. At times, your head is too close to the camera. You could set camera back a bit further instead of staring at your head 100% time except for your card &/or analytic screen shots.
Thanks for the feedback.
Love the Greg Morris ? My brain is always baffled why anyone pays up for his auctions vs an already graded example. I would send Greg Morris the cards in the slab and let them sell them as is and they will still get more than the other auctions in the same grade. 👊🤙🤙
I totally agree.
Graig, enjoyed the video. Question: as I have gotten more into the hobby I find myself less excited to buy a card online, and find myself thinking that I would rather wait to get it at a show or shop. Have you experienced this feeling?
I've had the opposite experience. Some of the dealers at my local card show couldn't care less about the online prices (comps) they, just weren't interested in wanting to make a deal when I've offered, what I thought was a fair price. Card shows do have some positives; however talking about my own experience, and it's funny you ask that question though, because mine was about what would Graig, do differently if he created his own show from scratch.
I answer a VERY similar question in Wednesday's video!!
My unpopular opinion is that if you are only willing to buy a card in a certain grade that you are more interested in investing than collecting. I 100% get looking for a 6 or higher to avoid creases or wrinkles, but if someone says it’s got to be an 8 for the registry score or that it will hold its value more than a 6 or 7 than I think the decision is more investor based. Otherwise you would be just content with adding the card to your collection in whatever condition you’re comfortable with regardless of grade. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either side. I just want people to be honest with themselves. Haha This is the best polarizing take I could come up with. lol 1000% agree that vintage football is very undervalued
''My unpopular opinion is that if you are only willing to buy a card in a certain grade that you are more interested in investing than collecting.''
I'm going to add this to my list of unpopular opinions, that I didn't know were unpopular. But, I agree.
@@ACD1994 haha I got one person getting this trending towards being popular!
I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion. I think most people would agree with you.
@@MidLifeCards well now I find your opinion unpopular Graig! Lol well I got nothing for you then. Haha Great video regardless
Joe Gato 100%. Honestly thought you were Joe the first time I watched.
I also personally like the longer videos. Good for putting on in the background while I work.
I agree with you on your definition of "rare." Something that is rare is one that doesn't come up often, if ever, for sale/trade/auction. The "under 5 pop" is what I'd call "super-rare" since it has an extended rarity beyond just hard to find on sale.
Joe Gatto is great.
There is nothing more insulting when an eBay seller tilts a card to avoid showing it’s off centered. But i’m sure they are banking on that one naive buyer who doesn’t notice.
As for unpopular opinions: I hate that autos rule modern cards. I hate it even more that it has seeped in 80’s and vintage cards. Back in the 80’s/90’s, the hobby frowned on autos. But of course the hobby is full of sheep and they just go along with anything that is popular even if they deep down don’t like it.
I like your pick for unpopular opinions.
Joe Gatto!! 😂 That's why you look so familiar to me! Lol
I love the longer videos and just your content in general. Keep up the great work! Tell Sal I said hey 😉
LOL. Murr says hello.
@@MidLifeCards lol nice!
Well done Mr. Gatto! 😉 I enjoy SCR as well, I think it is great entertainment.
LOL. Agreed.
I agree Jason. You know I love the guys on SCR. It's part of the hobby. Just as the Breakers and Fudge re-packers are.
@@BringingTheHeat-VBC Petty you are the best! Fudge re-packers honestly had me laughing out loud!
Hey there Graig and MidLife Nation I have a question to be put into the question que. It is a 2 part question about the 1933 Goudey set 1) Do you know why some of the cards in this set don't have the Big League Chewing Gum banner at the bottom of the card. 2) For both the 33 and 34 Goudey sets, why do so few of the cards have team names on the players jerseys and team logos on their hats. I have been wondering this for a while now and I don't think it has anything to do with licensing all the way back then. Thanks and love your show man.
I can share my thoughts on this topic soon.
Hello Graig, Good Q & A video. In answer to your question I believe you resemble Spahn.
I don't mind looking like a hall of fame pitcher and war hero!!
@@MidLifeCards ...and a top 10 All-time lefty.
PS. Thanks for all of the work and info you provide on your channel, Sincerely, Tim
Now I can't unsee you looking like Joe Gatto! What are you talking about, Graig?🤣 The last question was particularly interesting to me. I'm also somewhat risk adverse, but it I were a risk taker, I would try cracking one card and sending it to Gregg Morris as a test just to see. I would never actually do that myself, but they definitely sell at a premium. Awesome as always!
Thanks Billy. We've gotta catch up soon.
@MidLifeCards I'm here, brother.
Geoff Wilson is great. 52 Topps Mays much better. What is up with the curtain on the 51?
The original picture on the 51 has a screen/netting for the backstop. Would be nearly impossible to include in the portrait.
I agree that the 51 Bowman Willie Mays is better looking than the 52 Topps Mays. The 52 Topps is an iconic set, so that is why the 52 Topps Mays is more popular (and more expensive). That's not saying anything bad about the 52 Topps Mays, because it's a great card. The 51 Bowman just looks better.
Yeah, I can agree with that.
I like both cards as well....I just like the 51 more.
Question . What do you prefer on line card shopping, In person card show, or just going to the card shop to buy your cards? What is your take on this? For me I like card shows .
Good question. I'll put this one on the list for an upcoming episode.
@@MidLifeCards It's a good question. Though I am pretty sure, you had answered it before.
What a question on the unpopular opinions haha
Tough one!!
Okay Greg I got a bone to pick I bought a rookie elway , Aikman and Michael Irvin this weekend because of your football vids now I know they are not considered vintage but still older cards of guys I grew up watching and out the door all Sgc gradrd was under 100 bucks! Thanks but no thanks 😂
Three iconic cards!!
Plan on pumping out my first video real soon. Nervous but excited. So many different routes I can go.
That's awesome!! Good luck!!
Agree with you, definitely look more like Joe Gatto, but also think your videos are too long.
🤣 appreciate your honesty.
I won an auction on a 1956 Clemente that Greg Morris put in the description EX-NM so I thought it would get a 6. Sent it to SGC and received a 4. Lost over $100 in value and grading cost.
Ugh. That sucks. That's why I don't spend much on raw cards.
@@MidLifeCards that was and will be the last card I ever buy from GM
that's unfortunate. I just got back into collecting and submitted a bunch of GM pick-ups as my first SGC submission. I had 4 cards that graded better than what they were listed as, 4 were graded as what he listed, and only one (a NR MINT that graded a 6) that wasn't. I don't think there are any wins to be had on GM when the player is Mantle, Clemente, Mays, Koufax, or Aaron, but for lesser HOF'ers, I think there are plenty of deals to be had but you have to be careful. once in a while, I do see GM cards listed as being in a condition which they certainly are not.
sounds about right. Lucky it wasn't a 2.5-3.5
Wilson lost me when in one episode he followed a kid around a show who flipped a $3k modern card to net $100 profit and his response was "This is what it's all about."
I get it. A fair amount of what he's done is iffy. But, overall...I think he has done some good as well.
@@MidLifeCards that makes one of us
@@BringingTheHeat-VBC 😅
Graig, I had to laugh at a portion of this video. Thanks for making me laugh 😂.
The reason was I agreed with everything you said were unpopular opinions you had. Made me realize, I’m definitely an outside of the box collector. 😂 And to add one opinion, if a can d has less than 100 to exist on all population reports to exist, it’s definitely rare. With all of the collectors out there, that’s not many opportunities to buy that card.
Thanks Don. 100 for the pop report is a good rule of thumb. I'd say it's scarce and under 50 is rare.
A lot of the flak you get for long-windedness is affectionate flak, is it not? As for Warren Spahn, I think you have his beak but that's about it.
LOL. I'm not sure if it's positive or negative feedback, but it seems like a widely held belief. That's why i chose them being longer as my unpopular opinion.
Interesting that you like both Sports Card Radio and Geoff Wilson. SCR has gone so far out of its way to disparage the guy that they’ve hired various bands and musicians to sing about his evils. The lyrics are a crack-up, but are also so caustic that it kind of forces you to take sides. Tough to ride the fence on that one!
It’s all about perspective and a reminder not to take anything too serious. It’s sports cards
Not necessarily. SCR and Sports Card Investor are, not my 2 favorite RUclips channels, but I've watched both of their content. Doesn't really bother me, that they are not friends with Geoff.
They definitely don't get along, but I find value from each of them.
My thoughts on rare or scarce. To me a card can be rare with a population of say 50, but what makes that card scarce is it on comes up for sale once a year. Another card with a population of 50 comes up for sale 3,4,5 times or more a year. Scarce is the more important word in this example.
I think that's a good rule of thumb.
I have an sgc 6 with a crease
SGC’s website says the standards don’t allow creases in a grade that high. So, that must have been a mistake.
Sorry Graig, 100% Spahn. While Mike Petty's appearances are a must watch I've personally never been a fan of the shock jock schtick(say that 10 times fast).
I get it. It's not for everyone.
Wrong!! 😂😂😎❤️👍
The deeper in the weeds, the more interesting to me.
LOL.
I also think football is under appreciated and has great potential Do you think there are any rare football cards?
Certainly rare football cards. A lot of the Chicle cards from the 1930s are fairly rare and are iconic.
Thanks for the response
A 52 mantle may not be scarce or rare but it's out of the price of the majority of collectors. Which makes it unavailable for most collectors,
Well said.
You do not look like Warren Spahn. I would not crack a card with an 8 out of its holder to sell with Greg Morris. Good questions this week and fun answers.
Thanks Larry.
My two cents...Joe gatto doesn't play baseball, Warren. I like to play around on the SCR show. I'm actually a "perfect" fit for them. Not a fan of Grifting Goof. 51 is = to 52 Mays. I Love Vintage football cards, though I don't have any. Maybe someday? Your video's are perfect length. Don't change a thing.
How's your Vintage basketball collecting coming along...or have you pivot to the Victor Wembanyama Kaboomie?!
Thanks Mr. Petty. As always, your comment slayed.
@@ACD1994 I'm buying hits, chases and bangers. Along with 8K panini wembly boxes
You didnt answer my question. I didnt ask your definition of whats rare. Rare or hard to find is the far end of the spectrum. Scarce is the middle to me. Maybe i need a different term. Im comparing cards to a Rickey Henderson RC. You mentioned Ozzie Smith. Ill assume its harder to find a nice Ozzie than a nice Rickey. Is that a different category of scarceness. How about a Reggie Jackson. Is that a different category of scarceness.
Sorry I didn't give you the answer that you were looking for. The Ricky Henderson RC is a VERY plentiful card. I see it at every show I attend and can find one online at pretty much all times in many grades. To me, most cards from the 70s and prior would be considered rare compared to that card.
I would never buy a card when the seller couldn't be bothered to rotate the image so that the picture isn't sideways. I would also never buy a card where the seller clicked on 'remove background' and a portion of the corners are not visible. And I would never buy a card where the description says "mint" and the card is actually something far less than that - even if it was priced appropriately and if I was shopping for a lower grade copy.
Yeah. That's just laziness on the seller's part.
Joe Gatto? Warren Spahn? I'm sticking with Meatball😎😂
Understandable.
You definitely look more like Joe Gatto than Warren Spahn.
My own kids even think I look like Joe Gatto.
Long videos? The more Graig the better! Keep talking
Thanks Steve. I appreciate the support.
You reminded me more of Ben Stein.
I'll add that one to the list.
I think a lot people these days do not trust PSA...their grading has been pretty erratic..but PSA still realizes the highest resale so people submit to them first and foremost. It's a dog chasing its own tail. I've seen plenty of videos where people complain about PSA but end the video with... I guess I'll crack it out and resubmit...WHY?????
I don't think most collectors care about PSA as much, as it has to do with them having a set registry. If you're a card dealer or a flipper, I could understand why they are selling them. Since so many people are, paying in my opinion ridiculous amounts of money for a number on the label.
It's certainly a game that a lot of people are into. It's not really for me for the most part.
1). You look both like Joe Gatto and Warren Spahn. Not sure which one you look like more. Let's see a picture of your grandpa or dad, when he was your age.
2). My thoughts on SCR are they may actually be more polarizing than Geoff Wilson. Geoff, is a wealthy guy who can throw around hundreds at, a strip club. If he wasn't the ''richest guy in the room,'' he would be like any regular guy I think. Certainly would have less ''influence.'' The reason people are fans of SCR or not fans, it's for different reasons I think. 2 completely different types of video content.
3). Speaking of Mr. Wilson. I will keep the positive vibes, and say that I agree with you about the interviews. He is in the position where he can speak to a lot of different people, which isn't really a bad thing. There's already a lot out there about Geoff, the SCR boys have talked about Geoff plenty of times, and even dedicated to him his own theme music.
4). 1952 Topps is one of the most iconic sets ever. Though I prefer the 1951 Bowman of Mantle to his '52. Never really saw the hype. Considering the price disparity of his true rookie card. And I consider myself a Topps guy too.
5). I agree. That vintage football cards tend to be under valued. Though there are ''cheap'' cards in every sport. Even baseball. If you were an Orioles fan. The hobby would be more affordable. Or if you were a Harmon Killebrew fan. Or a White Sox fan. You get the point.
6). Your videos do tend to be ''short winded.'' Though I would say it's not even about the length, but rather that you never take time off. It doesn't have to be a long period of time. Even if it was a 2 week RUclips vacation. Give us a chance to miss you and your videos. I promise I will still be a viewer. I believe I can keep that promise. 😛
Andrew- great answers as always. I have recently been considering taking a break in the not too distant future. No final decisions yet, but it may happen soon.
@@MidLifeCards Well, do it because it feels right for you. Not what any of your hall of fame/future hall of fame viewers have to say lol.
