  • Every collector has their "dream card" or "grail card." But, having so much of the value of our collection wrapped up into one card, can limit us from expanding our collection into additional cards that we may want, as well. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Goudey, 52 Topps, Rookie Cards, Pre War...the list goes on and on of targets we have for our Vintage Card Collection. If there's anything I know, it's that there isn't just one correct way to collect. But, it's certainly fun to discuss the options we all have in front of us.

    Allie Reynolds! When your team wins five World Series in a row, plus pitching had a lot to do with it, and you were their best pitcher at the time; a fantastic closer and starter and intimidator, you deserve a place in the hall!
    There ought to be a rule: if you have received the moniker Super Chief, you automatically get into the Hall of Fame!

    I like that a few people have said Thurman Munson. I totally agree. But my vote is for my favorite player Keith Hernandez. 11 straight Gold Gloves, an MVP, batting title and a very high WAR. First Mets captain and 2 World Series Championships. Best defensive First Baseman of all time.

    It still shocks me every time I see Vada Pinson’s statistics, knowing he didn’t make the Hall. 2750+ hits with a 55 bWar! Come on … if he plays another year and a half, he’s a no brainer in the 3000 hit club. He led the NL in hits twice and has the highest number of hits of any classic era player not in the Hall of Fame (other than Rose - but that’s a separate issue). Great defender and baserunner as well!

    My pick would be Curt Flood. His exploits on the field were cut short. He was already on the path for the Hall but he decided that it was much more important to do the right thing in an era of great discrimination. His efforts in court would lead to ball players today receiving crazy amounts of money. Thanks for the topic and looking forward to see what others think! Greg from Ohio

    Great Video Graig. In regards to the Classic Era HOF induction, I'm going with Thurman Munson. I'm leaning to a Yankee (SHOCKER) but its hard to fathom how he hasn't gotten in to the HOF. I don't want to bore you with a bunch of stats but looking at what he accomplished over his 11 seasons should speak for itself.

    If i had a big time grail card like a 33 Goudey Ruth or 52 Mantle, they would stay in my PC forever. This is why you collect in any hobby, there is always that big item that defines your collection. My big PC cards are 86 Fleer Jordan and 79 Topps Gretzky. Those suckers aren’t going anywhere!
    I actually think the biggest problem with ultra modern collectors is that they are ripping packs to sell instead of putting it in their PC. Back in the 80’s/90’s, if you pulled an expensive rookie card, that was going right into your PC. Again, that is the reason you collect. Now i see RUclips videos of guys pulling a 1/1 Wembanyama rookie, and their first thought is get it graded and then sell. To each their own, but sort of defeats the purpose of collecting and it just turns in gambling at a casino.

    Graig I don’t think of it that way. The cards ARE my collection. I continually add with my budget but I absolutely HATE subtracting from my collection be it big or small cards. I get no satisfaction from having once owned a card - my satisfaction is having it and being able to look at it.
    Getting to one is tough. The most egregious omission is Bonds but he is not pre 1980. If you make me pick one it is Dick Allen. I did not get to see him play - but he put up some monster years and was an amazing hitter.

    Yet another great, thought provoking video, Graig. Thank you. Regarding the question, I would go with Bad Bill Dahlen. There are many reasons for my choice, but here are a few highlights. 75.2 WAR, the highest of any non-scandal, non-hall of Famer. He played Shortstop and is still one the highest ranking SS of all time for putouts and assists. He was a on-base % and triple hitting machine, had 2500 career hits, 547 career triples, and he had a 42 game hit streak. I think the most important reason I chose him (as opposed to so many other worthy pre-1980 players) is that he is not only deserving but he has waited the longest to be recognized for his accomplishments. He had a Hall of Fame career over 120 years ago and deserves to be enshrined, even if it is 75 years after his death.

    The question for next week is a very good one. My opinion is one Player who without a doubt should be in the Hall of Fame is Dale Murphy. I couldn't believe it when I saw that he wasn't already in. Back to back MVPs 1982-83 and seven All-Star appearances, Five Gold Gloves, and four Silver Slugger Awards. Most of his career was after 1980. I know you asked for pre-1980, so here is my choice for that. Pete Rose is the obvious choice. The all-time Hit King, ROY, MVP, 17 all-star appearances, three World Series, etc. All of this was done before he was ever accused as a Manager of betting on Baseball. Can we finally put him in the HOF as a player? There is zero evidence that he gambled on baseball while he was a player. He was banned from baseball after his playing career, not during his playing career. Now is the time for this to happen. Updated: After doing some research, to clarify, I have concluded that Pete Rose did indeed bet on Baseball games while he was a Player/Manager with the Reds late in his career, but it has only been proven that he bet on the Reds and never against the Reds.

    Having a card, moving it (sell or trade) and then regret it and want the card again. Yeah, I can relate to that. That card for me is the 1980 Rickey Henderson. Is there a right way or a wrong way to collect? To me there is no wrong way, but there is a right way. The right way is the way that works best for the person doing the collecting. Regarding the player from the classic era who is most deserving of induction to the hall of fame, I have two names: Tommy John and Luis Tiant. Both are underrated. Both debuted in the 1960s and were excellent pitchers. Tommy John has that elbow surgery named after him as well.

    Great video as always. My answer for this weeks question and without even hesitating the first name that came to my mind was Tommy John. Besides his 288 wins, ERA of 3.34 and a career WAR of 61.6, the guy underwent a risky surgery in September 1974 to repair his troubled arm. Obviously we all know that now as Tommy John surgery. I mean the guy has a surgery named after him. Here he is, a young pitcher undergoing a surgery no one really knew about, risking his career for unknown long term results. His contribution to the game along with his already spectacular career stats should enshrine him in the Hall of Fame. I hope this counts as pre-1980 because he did pitch another seven or eight years post 1980.

    Thanks for another great discussion... My pick for pre-80's player to get in the HOF is John Donaldson. Not the one who played for the Kansas City A's in the 60's, but the one who was regarded as the best black pitcher in the 1910's. Newspapers printed a quotation from New York Giants manager John McGraw: “If I could change the color of his skin I would give twenty thousand dollars (more that he paid most of his Giants) for Donaldson and pennants would come easy.” Being a LHP who threw gas and had a great curveball, Babe Ruth thought he was one of the toughest pitchers he ever faced (seeing him in barnstorming games). He came close to getting in the HOF on the previous old era ballot. Being that his most dominant years were before the Negro Leagues, which started in 1920, he will not have much for counting stats. He did play with the KC Monarchs in the early 20's, but made more money playing on non NNL teams in Minnesota where he continued to be big time, though his fireball days from the 10's were behind him. SABR has some great research on him and there is even one video you can find of him pitching on RUclips. I'm guessing the person regarded as the best black pitcher of the 1910's would have to be on par with at least some of the HOF white pitchers of the era. You can't fault him for not getting the numbers as he wasn't allowed in the MLB and there was no Negro Leagues at the time. He pitched and also played centerfield in a ton of games, just not much for recorded stats. And I don't like you for only allowing us to pick one as Bill Dahlen should be in as well. Thanks!

    Hey Graig. Another awesome conversation, my friend. To answer this week's question. There are a lot of players deserving of Hall of Fame induction. Vada Pinson and Tommy John immediately jump out to me, but since you wanted us to pick one player, I'll go with the Cardinals Homer pick of Ken Boyer. He has a Baseball Reference WAR of 62.8, 2143 career hits, 282 career home runs, 1141 career RBI. He also won 5 Gold Gloves, was an 11 time All-Star oh, and by the way, won an MVP. He had a 14-year career, but due to a back injury, most of his production came over the first 10 years. He hit over .300 5 times and hit 20 or more home runs 8 times. His NL MVP came in 1964, and the next season, his back issues began, which affected him for the rest of his career. From then forward, his career best in home runs was 14, and RBI was 75. Clearly a shell of his former self.

      I think Boyer is absolutely on the shortest of short lists.

    Dave’s response was so interesting to hear. I definitely get moving one huge card to be able to acquire more, but most (myself included) would do so by immediately picking the same card up in a lower grade. It totally makes sense having already completed the hunt though.
    It tough to pick just one, but I’m going to go with Roger Maris. I know the total stats are lacking a bit. However, the accolades and huge milestone make him deserving to me. 7x All Star. 2X MVP. 3x WS Champ. Just the magic of the ‘61 season and what it meant at the time and for years to come puts him over the top in my opinion

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  8 дней назад

      Maris is a really interesting choice. He was so good for a period of time, but didn't have the length of greatness of others in that period. But, when he was good, he was REALLY good.

    Thurman Munson. No disresect to these players, but when the likes of Joe Mauer, Buster Posey and Yadier Molina are going to be in the Hall of Fame, it will be a crime unless Thurman is in there. Agree with Thurman getting in (though he isn't my #1 pick as Graig is only giving us one), but I disagree with reasoning of a couple folks saying "when the likes of Joe Mauer getting in...." I need to defend Mauer-- a first ballot HOFer. In his 10 years behind the plate he may have been one of the most dominant catchers ever. He had 3 GG's, 3 batting titles, over 50 WAR in 10 years, and a triple crown slash year in his MVP season. Not Thurman Munson, or any catcher for that matter has ever done that. Yes, then concussions made him move to 1B and he wasn't the same, but those 10 years of catching were phenomenal. Being productive in a shortened career is where Munson compares some, and I agree should get in.

    Loved your expanded thoughts on dream/grail cards and buying and selling, Graig. One important variable is that if you are buying wisely, sometimes when you go to sell you find that the cards have appreciated enough while you owned them that your return is higher and thus offsets the fees and other associated costs related to selling. Certainly not always the case and would be a dangerous game to rely on that, but it has worked out that way for me many times over the years. Another variable is that to me there is an enjoyment bonus (hopefully) of having owned a particular card for a period of time prior to selling it, can’t put a number on that for the math equation portion of this, but it still has a value. Great episode on a topic that I’ve been giving a lot of thought to lately! 👊

    Thurman Munson should be in the baseball Hall Of Fame. I think catcher is just one of those positions, where it's been difficult historically for catchers to make the hall of fame, that when Ted Simmons or Joe Mauer, who is the most recent at the position to be, elected in the baseball hall of fame led to some discussion online about the HOF being watered down. Mauer was a great player, who sadly had some serious injuries which caused him to switch to 1st base. To me, Munson was a top 3 or top 5 catcher for nearly a decade, and one of the biggest reasons they won two World Series, and he was clutch. The Yankees captain for a reason. Buster Posey, will most likely make the baseball hall of fame, when he's eligible along with Yadier Molina, and imo Munson statistically is comparable to those guys. If the question was more than 1 deserving player. Curt Flood, would receive further consideration. Today's players owe a lot to him for being a pioneer and trail blazer. Basically sacrificed the last few years of his career too. Tommy John, would be a fine choice too. I see him as the Fred McGriff of pitchers. When it comes to the history of baseball, it's difficult to tell the story of the game without these players mentioned. Good question.

    Considering the Veterans HOF ballot, there are many deserving players here, but being a bit biased to the catcher position, I have to go with the Yankee captain Thurman Munson. Just look at the Topps 1971 and 1978 cards and he just reminds me of the greats like Campanella, Berra, and Bench. Short career but great stats. eBay and PayPal take a lot more than 10%. And if you bought the card via Catalog Auction, you probably paid a 20% buyer’s commission on top of the sales tax and shipping. I’ve found that unless the card sells for 38% more than the original purchase price, I’m underwater. So “cashing out” is not as viable an option as it seems. And if a certain candidate wins in November (and we are taxed on unrealized capital gains on top of a digital dollar), we will all witness the death of the hobby.

    • @Chip-dg7wy
      @Chip-dg7wy 9 дней назад +1

      The hobby will be fine come November. The proposed taxation of unrealized capital gains only would apply to individuals with net wealth over 100 million dollars. I’m sure these people are the ones that fuel the $5 mil Lebron James card sales, but I think the hobby will be ok without a portion of the top end sales happening. Beyond that if a guy with billions is buying million dollar sports cards, it’s equivalent of a guy with thousands buying cards worth ten bucks or less. He can do it for fun, not as an investment. These guys wipe their ass with Kobe rookie cards.

    Selling your top card? I guess that depends on your needs. I rewarded myself after my divorce by buying my best card, a Bobby Orr RC. Sell it? I plan on being buried with it.

    My answer to this weeks question is with out a doubt Pete Rose. I know he bet on baseball and that is a big no no but he bet for his team to win not to loose. I think that totally matters he has owned up to what he did and had an incredible career and accomplished a record that I don't think will ever be beat just like Gretzky's point totals.

    Graig, what do you consider a dream card price? 10 thousand plus, 100 K or more Thanks!

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards  10 дней назад

      I think it depends on the person and the budget. At one point, $500 was a dream card for me. Now, it's probably a card that's $5k plus.

    It's so difficult thinking of who MUST get elected to the HOF. I feel like there are tons of great players who aren't in. But should they? I'll throw a name out there as my pick.....Tommy John

      Great choice. Not only was he a great pitcher, but he risked his career on an experimental surgery that has literally changed the trajectory of so many future players/pitchers!!

    I would say Pete Rose but we all know how MLB will never consider him and with that said I'm so going with Maury Wills a shoe in if only he hadn't to play under the shadow of HoF'er Pee Wee Reese for 7 years in the minors what a terror on the basepaths he would've been through the fab 50s with his career stats: 7× All-Star (1961-1963, 1965, 1966)
    3× World Series champion (1959, 1963, 1965)
    NL MVP (1962)
    2× Gold Glove Award (1961, 1962)
    6× NL stolen base leader (1960-1965)
    with his key Rookie being the '60 Topps WS card with quite the action photo to cap off his speed and agility to tag out little Luis Aparicio.
    Alright I know you said not to mention my top 5 most like to see in the HoF but I can't leave out Vada Pinson a close runner up with his near 3000 hits throughout his major league career can't be ignored.

    This is not following the rules but could we discontinue the veterans committee and all of its derivatives? It served a legit purpose for many years but now it only serves to water down the Hall. Last year I discovered a HOFer had his cards as “common player” in a late 80’s Beckett. And we don’t need umps, managers, execs, owners, or “innovators.” Leave these guys in but no more - the Hall should be for the players. I don’t care who set the bases at 90 feet (IYKYK) or about someone’s “booming basso calls” (again, IYKYK). Let’s not let the only HOF that matters devolve into something like the Basketball Hall.

    Pete Rose! MLB has him banned for 38 years now. Betting now is widely accepted, that is why major sports have moved into Vegas. How long can you punish the guy for the wrong he did? Lets go, the Hit King to the Hall!!!!
