KTM 250 SXF Won't start, Starter Button Not Working - Wiring Issue with Late Model SX-F Dirt Bike
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 мар 2021
- Here we'll show you why your motocross bike won't start on the button. And the first thing to do to confirm it is the button before you start taking the bike apart.
This fix applies to late model 2 & 4 stroke KTM bikes.
BONUS Tip: How to prime the injectors before you hit the button! Save your electric starter! Авто/Мото
You are an absolute legend. I’ve watched probably a dozen videos trying to figure out why my FC 250 would not start and your suggestion with spinning the wheel in gear to check the overall system was a game changer. It ended up being a cut wire coming off the starter button’s wire harness.Thank you!!!
Same exact issue here. Major thanks for the tip. Took just about the whole electrical apart and boom last thing was this broken cable. My wires were bent and zip tied and as my handlebar spins from left to right it puts a tremendous tension on the cable/cable harness causing the cable to split.
Thank you! I had the exact same problem with my 2018 300XCW, sadly I purchased a new solenoid before seeing your video.
Glad we could help. Sorry you didn’t find us sooner. Happy riding!
Thank you!! One of the wires coming off that white connector had completely snapped on mine but further back under the black part that is shrink wrapped. Not a clue how…. It’s a 2022 with only 20 hours on it
That's strange, I'd be talking to the dealer about a replacement wiring loom.
@@603MX I could of but I’ve fixed it now, only had to join the cable and it started working. Not even sure you get warranty on motocross bikes?!
Happened to mine too. 2022 as well. Now, the FI light has one wire that also seperated.....
thx dude lol
I've been messing with my ground for an hour. I didn't think of this
Cheers for the video! I will try this when I get home. But how do I bypass the white connector to the other side? Do I just hot wire the cables from one side to the other and bypass the white connector?
Thanks for the tip. Worked a treat
Glad it helped
Thanks for this, it was the connector on mine, proved by bypassing it with a wire!!
Glad it helped! Had to do the same thing track side as a quick fix. So we made the video to help others! Look out for more videos coming soon as we start prepping bikes ready for spring.
Thanks for sharing the "Prime the injector" tip. It helped me to solve my start issue.
Yesterday it was my turn to experience the "no start feature" on my FC 450 -22.
It has been a little shaky when starting the bike, long crank time about 5-10 sec, but this time it was cranking but the motor didn´t start. I did a 20 sec try, released the start button and tried again- nothing happened. As is nothing...
Very confused I brought some tool, took about 5 min, and just for fun I pressed the start button again. It cranked but the motor didn´t start. 2nd try nothing. OK battery you say.
Got some jump starter on, and tried again. Nothing. We set power directly on the start motor, it worked but motor didn´t start. We tested the solenoid, the start motor cranked. It didn´t start when we pushed the start button.
Back home I looked at the fuse, it was not burned. Checked battery. 13+ volts. Tested the "secret" test by put the bike in 2nd or 3rd gear and pulled the tire backwards, that should trigger the fuel pump. It didn´t start as expected.
So the symptoms was.
- start button had worked, but was now not working. It worked some times but just to engage the starter and then it just stop working.
- start cable down to the connector behind the number plate was working. The connector needed some cleaning and got some oil - still dead start button
- no broken wires
- battery OK
- fuel pump not starting when cranking
- fuse not blown
My issue was actually a bad fuse! You couldn´t see it, but it was bad. I used an instrument to check it, and there was no connection at all.
Changed the fuse, the bike started at once. I did the turn back wheel backwards, and the fuel pump started.
So check you fuse!!!!
So their is the black/white wire, orange wire, and the black looped wire. Which wires did you snip and connect together to bypass? Having the exact same issue you had
Had same issue. Brown wire was cut. Replaced it, still didn't start. One of the black loop wires in the molex connector wasn't passing juice. Replaced that and it started. Thanks.
Bypass meaning cut the wires from your switch and reconnecting to the wiring harness ?
Man you saved my butt really appreciate it
hi, how do you bypass the broke wires? and what did you buy?
Exactly same issue on 2021 FC 450, going to the track became a real workout.... I've dug around and all seemed fine and i've ended up at exactly the same point you are talking about. I'm going to try this - thanks for the vid - legend.
EDIT: So it was this but instead of breaking at the connector, it was the small brown wire itself had broken further down in the wiring harness (like it had been cut in half with wire cutters). Strange to me for a wire to able to do this taped up secure in a wiring harness but nonetheless it happened somehow.
Thanks for the update, something else worth checking 👍🏻
Thank you for the update. So you had no power at all to anything ? Or ? How did u know ?
@@TheLostAdventuress You could confuse it with having a flat battery on a motocross bike which is what i thought until i checked the battery. So yeah you push the start button and there is nothing and if the battery checks out it must be a problem between the starter and the start button. So you may have to trace the wiring back from the start button to see if there is a break in it somewhere, it seems to be somewhat a common problem.
@@603MX bro I just bhought one I have to push the start button three times to get it to start .is that ok or have I got a known problem , hope you reply mate before I have to fiddle with it ,cheers .
Did you have to buy a new wiring harness? I think I have the same issue of that brown wire breaking.
Thanks for the help! I’ve got the same exact problem. How do you bypass the broken wires?
You need to just track them to the connector behind the number plate. There is a 4 block connector, it’s a strange setup as the wires aimlessly loop back and forth. You’ll need some wire strippers, heatshrink crimps, a crimper and a heat gun. All can be found on Amazon for less than $50. We’ve never had an issue since doing it
Thanks for this video 👍
No Problem. More videos coming soon, as we start prepping the bikes for spring, subscribe today!
what should i do if the wires on the right are snapped but the starter wires are fine???
I was wondering if you could make a more Im depth video about your bypass it would be very helpful!
I’ll do that next weekend, ran out of time this weekend. Thank you!
Great video. Got an issue as well that's similar to this. Bikes voltage drop so much across the harness that it won't start back up for 30-40 seconds if left alone. It seems to trickle back slowly. Any thoughts on what could be the culprit? I measured it at the leads of the starter button but also at the connector behind the plate. Same out come. Press button and the voltage zeros out and slowly trickles back until it's enough to start the bike.
Sounds like the battery itself, disconnect it from the bike completely and connect it to an optimiser. While the optimiser tries to recover the battery check the ground lead. If it still acts the same the battery is likely dead. A good shop can test it for you. If you are replacing the battery we always recommend Anti gravity batteries.
@@603MX Hmm..Checking ground today. Battery static voltage is 13.5V and drops to 10V when starting bike. The voltage drop happens when the starter button is depressed. Kind of like a toilet 🤣. All the water goes out and slowly seeps back in until there is enough to flush again.
@@jswervy16 Too Funny! Let us know what you find! 👍
@@603MX Starter relay corrosion
I had a wire break about 20mm in from the main loom cover. Happend due to the neck pivoting back and forth.
That’ll do it too!
Same exact situation on mine. Very poor cable management with that harness attached to the handle bar.
I'm having same issue except my wires broke and don't know how I should bypass it
Hi mate, thanks for the video!!!!
Had the same problem. Now the bike is running again.
Do the bridges have any sence, or can I connect the wires directly and leave the bridges out?
Greetings from Germany
Hi, yes the bridges can be taken out completely. Happy riding!
@@603MX thanks
where do i buy one
Thanks! It's what was wrong with our 16 200 xcw. All looked fine until I pushed the wires into the plug and it started.
Happy this video helped you 👍🏻
I saw your video and have the same problem, my bike will bump start but the fuel pump does not engage when I spin the wheel like you did?
What happens when you press the button? If bump starting works and nothing else does i.e. the starter button or ‘bumping the fuel pump’, have the battery tested. Note: a battery can measure 12 volts with a multimeter but not have the amps required to power the starter. Actually bumping will spin the entire engine and electrical system into life, when a bike is running it technically doesn’t need the battery any more, that’s why it’s working this way for you.
Should do a video on bypassing
Are you able to show a video of how to bypass the connector?
I will do my best to put that together this weekend for you, subscribe and hit the bell to be notified when I upload it
Hey I’m having the same problem but I keep checking the start button every once in a while the start will turn for a second but usually the start button does nothing. I can bump start it fine and if I press the starter while the bike is on I can hear it spinning. I thought it was the battery but I got a new one and it didn’t fix anything
Hi, with this issue the button work sometimes. Ours was the same. When you press the button does it turn the engine at all?
@@603MX no it doesn’t unless the bike is already running then you can hear the starter spin
@@603MX u have any idea what could be wrong?
@@grussingcustomknives8097 sounds like it could be a relay gone bad.
Hi mate , mine won’t start but my cables are all good on front .
I done the in gear and turn wheel and gear the injectors go and lights on .
Any other ideas ?
Done 2 race on sat and come in to pits and stopped for 2 mins then wouldn’t fire up on the button
Couple of questions to get to the bottom of this.
1. Will it bump start and ride fine?
2. Does it do anything when you press the button?
@@603MX won’t bump start , and just try’s to turn over but won’t fire
@@matthewnobby6789 OK, if it turns over on the button and won't start or fire Check the fuse for the fuel pump and then check the spark plug for condition and spark.
@@603MX wiring all good , and pump . Going to take plug out tomorrow if the standard tool will fit in hole as don’t look like they do as too fat .
@@matthewnobby6789 OK, you need a very slim 14mm, there is a specific tool if you search 'ktm spark plug tool' on you favorite shopping site. Be careful when testing for a spark, lots of volts in those coils.
Same thing happened to me yesterday
Get video. Im chasing an electrical gremlin on my 2015 690 enduro r that won't start. I'm gonna give this a try
Did you manage to track this down?
Clever
Hi guys .My ktm 350sxf 2012 not el.start and no light FI ..new baterry.new starting rele. And don't.start.. push start and klik.klik.klik.. whot the problem please
Hi, If you have replaced the battery and starting relay then unfortunately it sounds like the starter itself.
@@603MX my ktm 250 have the same problem no Light nothing what is the problem.?
