Lubuntu 24.04 worked absolutely fine - stable and fast, so I left that on it after installing. So, using a lighter weight desktop manager for an older computer works better. Who would have figured? ;)
Ahh, yes, good call. I'd forgotten that Gnome has switched over by default these days. Might have a play. However, it is running so nicely with Lubuntu, I'll probably just leave that on it now. Thanks for the comment / suggestion!
Thanks for the comment! Yes, it's still got enough under the hood even today. However this one was never upgraded to win 10 with the free offer, so is now stuck on win 7. Given that is now no longer supported, Linux seemed like a better option security-wise for the realistic stuff this laptop would be used for. Cheers!
@@Tech-Nerdrome i was still able to activate win10 with the win7 key mine came with. But yeah linux is the better option going forward into 2025+ when 10 is no longer supported
I wonder if part of your issue might be the nVidia graphics card. By default, Ubuntu would try to use Nouveau (open source driver) as your NVS 3100M is no longer supported by the proprietary driver. Something to try would be to add the nvidia-legacy PPA and install the patched proprietary driver. I find that it performs better and is more stable overall than Nouveau on older cards.
Hi, Thanks. Yes, I'm pretty sure it is the unsupported Nvidia graphics card - probably the reason that Ubuntu did not download a proprietary driver when I gave it permission to. I'll take a look at that thanks. However, it is running fast and stable on Lubuntu 24.04, I'll probably just leave it on that to be honest.

Maybe it's just Gnome Wayland problem. Try to use Gnome X11 if you didn't tried before :)

I had this laptop a few months ago and it even runs Windows 10 fine :)
