As a flutter dev their installer is VERY well done! I'm very excited to see what else they bring to the flutter/linux ecosystem, especially as I've noticed a lot of Flutter-Rust developer job listings for Canonical recently.

@@catto-from-heavenIn my case this flutter installer was just "flut", what in my native language means "no good" / "worthless". It kept on crashing. Only waiting for minutes before clicking the 'next' button brought me finally to the installation screen....and then it crashed again. So for now I stick to my reliable 22.04.

  • @BrandonNewbill1

one thing i noticed in the app center is that it doesn't tell you if the app is already installed; you need to select it first and see if it has the option to install or open. would be nice if there was some indication when browsing like an icon to show that it is already installed. I guess it's ok for the novice user but for more experienced users, install the synaptic package manager for more control and filtering options.

I like the generic utility names, it's a royal pain needing to test the webcam but I can't recall if it is called 'Cheese', 'Gouda', 'Brie' or whatever . I simply need to look for camera because I need to test the camera. Since I use different distros in different situations having generic names for some things is quite helpful to me at least.

    • @mikechappell4156
      @mikechappell4156 8 месяцев назад

My guess is Gnome took the complaint about the weird names open source used to heart and started naming by function. I never have been a fan of that. If you must go that route, than the about boxes should be pretty clear about what the actual app name is.
I think Web was Epiphany or something. I've no idea what Terminal or calculator are. The application names are too generic and make it harder to find information about them. At least KDE usually throws the k in front.
Looking for man pages is nasty when you don't know what the name of the application is.

I have an issue with this version of the distro, the media handler now is managed by Pipewire, so the only way that all media features work fine is by resetting Pipewire in every boot or install Cheese, wich does not come preinstalled as before, and other media players to get most of the media working, but the standard installed apps do not work out of the box. Some things are really buggy in this version, and no patches for major issues has been released.

I was excited for this release like most, but it didn't take me long to run into issues. I think its going to take a considerable amount of time for a lot of apps to catch up to stable versions for this LTS. I went back to 22.04 and everything worked fine as expected, but since I was downgrading and I prefer gnome I decided to also give PopOS a whirl. Even though 22.04 was solid PopOS felt faster and snappier; especially when comparing the app stores. Pop having flatpak out-of-the-box and it running smooth as butter was a big surprise. The cosmic desktop felt alright, but it's still gnome at the end of the day. Maybe an unpopular take, but I think PopOS might actually do Ubuntu LTS better than Canonical does. I've used Ubuntu almost exclusively for many years, but I think I might be a Pop guy now.

Totally disagree about never having to install a deb. I have had to install many deb packages due to no flatpak or snap. Or the icon doesn't appear in the tray with a flatpak or snap, but does with the deb. Some examples are Megasync and ExpanDrive.
I found that Ubuntu 24.04 didn't have the latest Nvidia 550 driver. Also when I tried to use the software manager updates failed. Seems like there are still some bugs and it is better waiting until they get an update.

I use fedora, but what strikes me about reviews like this (no offense to you) is that they become less of a review of this distros specific implementation, and more a review of Gnome, which is I assume going to be the same across the board irrespective of distro, as long as they have the same gnome version. I love the quarter tiling feature and can’t wait for that! I felt reviewing the wallpapers was unnecessary however.

It's an installer! If it works, you can work. It doesn't have to look good.

To install gdebi one has to install 102 dependencies (entire Perl). I don't think I'll do that. Also, I just don't want snap.

It is new for Ubuntu LTS, that the icons of the other open apps are shown (probably some Gnome option or extension that was already available for other distros).
But tiling windows are not generally new to Linux. Check out i3wm, sway, qtile or dwm, if you want to go crazy with it.

It's one of the features I missed the most
The Win11 version of it is actually the best. Which is surprising because micro$oft bungled everything else up on windows

In my opinion this is the best Ubuntu despite the bugs. Let's star saying that the boot time is the fastest of any distro around. The esthetic is impressive and the responsiveness and driver compatibility is number one. Yes. There are several bugs like snap store failing to update, etc ... and need to install Gdebi in order to install downloaded deb files, otherwise impressive

Running on 24.04 right now. It's a great Linux distro, and I would recommend this to anyone. Except that, on my first try, it can't decrypt my ZFS drive, seems like an issue with swap, which I think should be zRAM already. And the buggy "Enhanced" tiling that would crash the entire system, kicked me out of the session, when I double-click on the GNOME top bar. Nonetheless, ZFS runs great on the system. Excellence distro!

DT, what about the size of application now since default format is snap ??? I found the live iso is 6 GB ! Huge size. I understand they have compression on snap now to speed the loading of it. But they use more memory since libraries will be many times in memory because they are all included in every snanp. I'm curious to know what do you think of that ??

I wish Ubuntu would come with extension manager and gnome tweaks already installed which almost everyone on the planet ends up having to get anyways. And at 5.7gb, it's as big as Windows 11 now. xubuntu, mate, and lubuntu are much smaller in size. So what's the bloat in ubuntu? EDIT: Ubuntu Mate didn't even bother to change any wallpapers at all from 22.04, it's time for ubuntu to start kicking out some flavors for no development.
