Ubuntu Launchpad Bug: bugs.launchpad...
Yeah...I tried both Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 40 on my laptop and snaps has ruined Ubuntu. I've had no issues with Fedora. Updates work, all of my extensions work, etc.
Yeah same for me
Snaps are freaking horrible.
@@otockian Yep
Same for me, recently moved to Fedora from Ubuntu because of that
@@klaus-heinzmorales4448 is fedora good for old laptops with 8gb DDR3 ram
this was more of a comparison between the two gnome versions of each distro, not the distro itself. it still was interesting though.
i'm neither an ubuntu nor a fedora user and i don't use gnome at all, so i'm happy to not need to decide between these two options :) but if i had to i would nowadays clearly go with fedora
I would pick Fedora because Ubuntu has to many bugs. You should compare them again after the Ubuntu point release when the bugs are squatted, but by then Fedora has changed too.
Heyup Johan! I'd agree with you there matey. As you know, I installed Ubu 24.04 myself recently and I can say that I too had that snap store update bug (fixed it using a fix from 22.04). I have to say that even knowing that Ubuntu LTS's aren't really 'stable' until the first point release, I had expected much better from a corporate backed distro. So yeah, I'm tempted to switch that test machine over to Fedora 40 ...but at the same time I want to see how Ubu shapes up over the weeks to come as well. Stick or Twist? :/ Life's so much calmer on my MX...
@@stationsixtyseven67 It surely is😉
I love ubuntu I currently have snaps and flatpaks No issues
Sh*tiest their release - driver packaging issues (they stick to nvidia-535 at current point, but it have critical bugs on Wayland. Installing newer drivers from ppa: graphics-drivers also not an option - 545, 550 versions have rendering issues on laptops with Nvidia Optimus and dGPU only mode selected, 555 - with Nvidia Optimus mode), not stable (because of snaps - if you install too many snaps you will have infinity of loop mount points, just type 'lsblk' just for fun and see yourself this f*ckin' mess, and I'm not telling even about issues with icons when you do system upgrade - its annoying that you have idle icons for all snap apps), no way for now to install system WITHOUT bootloader (just fyi, you will want to use this once you would like to setup system with full disk encryption and btrfs snapshots - their ZFS option just nothing but crap, its not ZFSonRoot as all thought, so you cannot do full disk snapshots) and trust me you don't want to experiment with custom kernels like 'low-latency' or 'liquorix' on 24.04 (even thow 555 support 6.10 kernel installing liquorix kernel will just freeze your system, don't happen on 550 and plus-minus fix stuttering issues on Wayland but its very spiky fix). I really don't understand where Cannonical going, they used to be the best in Linux sector, now they don't. Still, its not so bad while companies like RedHat and Valve exist and brining real life to Linux world while companies like Cannonical do their best to ruin their inner child.
P.S.: On Fedora I made 555 drivers working with Nvidia Optimus (all its modes) and latest (6.10) kernel within 5 mins while I spent 2 nights to fix somehow issues on 24.04. And before you asked why I wouldn't switch to X11 read about thing called "screen tearing". That is very rare (sarcasm) issue on Nvidia gpus with X11 ...
Fedora 40 Gnome on desktop- beautiful. Ubuntu 24.04 on laptop awesome on 240hz -runs better. Both incredible. No Ai scans. I'm back!
Now enable fractional scaling on fedora
Great video, I’m a total nube. After using Windows for most of my life this is mind blowing. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge.
A lot has changed since my red hat 4.1 days in the 90s
I used to use Ubuntu, but always found I was always applying fixes all the time. Fedora has been solid been using not for the past 3 years and never had an issue. Solid and more refined
I'm a Ubuntu fan but I got sick of Snap and use Fedora, Manjaro now
Grats
Fedora is the better choice.
EndeavourOS is the better choice.
Arch is a good choice too.
Depends on your use TBH
I personally use Fedora, but Ubuntu LTS for sure also has it's place.
I have been using Linux for past 4 years. I thought ubuntu is the best. After one year of usage, I tried fedora. It's fantastic
@@TheAliAhad ???
Exellent comparison and analysis!
Have only use Ubuntu in past but consider Fedora.
Nice video - told me what I needed, BUT you should definitely count the number of times you say "go ahead"....
You missed the change in the default Ubuntu install, now the default install is the old minimal install, while extended install is the old default install with all the applications pre-installed.
A comparison based on real hardware in only fair, if you use the same hardware. The OS running on the newest HW will have a disadvantage with respect to HW related bugs. With the modern hypervisors it is more fair to use a VM, unless you want to test gaming performance and in that case you surely need to test on the same HW.
The Ubuntu "Software Updater" does not really update snaps, despite that it promises it, so afterwards I always run "snap refresh" in the terminal to get all snaps updated. That avoided the stupid problem with the App Center, it is faster, it works on my other distros with snaps and it shows the progress of the snap updates.
Good points - I think the real hardware part is important because I saw many reviews only using a VM and missed some big issues which users would run into
Fedora has much more up to date software compared to Ubuntu.
I'd go with Ubuntu because technically they do Gnome the best with their accent color choices, sane defaults, extra features and their exclusive triple buffering vsync support that makes it a buttery smooth vsynced experience. Gnome without triple buffering can be a stuttery and low framerate mess, especially on low-end hardware, not so on Ubuntu though. Ubuntu is also easier when installing proprietary drivers, because it gets done automatically during the installation - or - post installation via two or three clicks. Ubuntu has more options enabled within Gnome too, whether that's app indicators or an actual taskbar that can be configured to your desire. I could go on and on - it's the small details that make it superior. In addition, I don't like how Red Hat has spoken about open source and how they actually feel about it in the past.
i prefer the defult gnome of Fedora, i've seen inconsistencies and broken stuff using Ubuntu
So, new version of Ubuntu has bugs. Wait for next version, got it.
Tried fedora, but i will stick with mint now
I also prefer Mint, on old hardware & Fedora on new one
Fedora have a big problem if your install on new RTX graphic card....install not launch....
Fedora 39 is better than Ubuntu 22.04 on new RTX graphic card. I will not change for Fedora 40 for now, it still early
install gnome tweaks & you get better look than ubuntu some bing wallpapers or other dynamic
one thing in PROS for Ubuntu -- it`s unique installer.
Fedora uses standart "anaconda" wich is same in a lot of other distribution, not bad (have some issues with locales & timezones in some other distros & mine prefer is Fedora`s installer, cause i`m from Ukraine and don`t want russian locales or bellarussian timezones)
I did not know Fedora could run on System 76 devices. Is the process pretty much like for any other computer?
It's just a PC, It can run any distro and even Windows if you fancy
I have a Dell Precision creator's laptop which I started out using Fedora so I would have the latest Plasma. When 6 plasma came out Fedora chose to focus on Wayland. A couple of my apps just don't play well with Wayland. As human desire would have it I really wanted to keep plasma 6 which Ubuntu/Kubuntu do not have. So the next best thing I found was Tuxedo OS 3. Love it because it has plasma 6, still has X11 and Ubuntu stability. Ubuntu collaborates with Dell so I find it keeps up with Fedora in every way for drivers, BIOS updates, install etc. It excels beyond many distros in this same regards. Personally I find the Ubuntu community more congenial than Fedora which is deeply appreciated when I so something embarrassing. However that said Fedora community is much better place than ARCH community. Burrr, chills my spine just to type that name.
I am running both on my desktop on their own ssd's and both work nicely. However I agree with your comments about Fedora being better out of the box.The one problem I have with Ubuntu is the cog wheel on login for switching between X11 and Wayland is missing. The cog wheel is there if I run Ubuntu on my old laptop though but then the app-store will not boot on that one. Definitely a few bugs with Ubuntu's new release.
Tried fedora many times and never enjoyed it. Things didnt work, graphical glitches and lots of errors.
Interesting comparison. I'm learning development, and searching which distro to switch from Windows. I think I'll go for Fedora, since I want a simple work out of the box. There's always a future opportunity to try out other distros, ofc.. Thanks!
I was enjoying Fedora 39 since the start of the year, when I tried upgrading to 40, it blew up in my face. My install became unusable. Fortunately I had everything backed up. Now I'm on Zorin, it's ok.
Can you check that Android Studio works on Fedora including emulators? Emulators is my major pain, since bring CPU to 100%.
Ubuntu wins on looks? Is it just me who think Fedora looks much better?
Looks pretty meaningless, you can install any desktop environment on either of them. I always use KDE
Hi. how to make ubuntu with desktop enlightenment? is there an iso ready to use on the starter pendrive?
Major difference between the two is Ubuntu is for newbies while Fedora requires some Linux knowledge and the only common thing between them is the Gnome Desktop.
out of my experience, fedora was always quite a bit easier to use and you dont need to use the terminal as much. my parents could figure out fedora. ubuntu wasnt bad but it took more time for them to figure out
Fedora 40 for me.
ubuntu looks more polished
"looks"
@@elim.c.8563 I have installed in on my machine as the main OS , I must say this editions is polished
imo, not really. i guess thats more based on personal preference. ubuntu may look nicer to you, but it is OBJECTIVELY more buggy.
Fedora KDE for the win
Man it's always snaps ruining Ubuntu's experience...
sudo apt purge snapd
why though?
fedora is good , but release to short
Ubuntu hss snap, pulls user activities, and is buggy. Fedora with its pure gnome helps concentration ( a lot), so, it keeps being fedora for me, as in the last 5 years. I'd like an lts, but well, it"s what it is, for some good reason I don't know, but trust
Tried Fedora. Even with default partition install as recommended for dual boot, Fedora nuked Windows in grub and uefi. Could not recover Windows at all. Ubuntu did dual boot with no problem. Going back to Ubuntu with vanilla Gnome, basically same look as Fedora.
LTS vs bi-annual?
Neither can do fractional scaling properly. Multiple monitors - don't bother. The Fedora KDE 6 version is perfect.
Ubuntu 24.04 is fast and nice but i did have program errors ubuntu still needs work
for my hp omen laptop, screen flicker even on wayland on ubuntu 24.04, on the other side on fedora 40, battery drain so fast within 1 hour
I'd never comparison a main distro with a based on distro.
these are both gnome-based. neither of them are a "main" distro.
@@GrahamEubanks Gnome is the DE aka Desktop Environment not the base system. Fedora is an independent distro with their flagship Gnome DE and backed by RHEL, on the other hand Ubuntu is based on Debian Sid which shipped with Gnome DE and backed by Canonical, I believe you've get the scenario.
Does Fedora still require a separate /boot partition when I dual boot windows? First time I tried to manually set up partitions it does not allow me to use just a /boot/efi partition
Yes, it's still needed even with a full storage installation, but that's because /boot has to be on Ext4 but Fedora Installer defaults to use Btrfs for its root partition. If you change that to use Ext4 for root you will not need a separate /boot partition, only a /boot/efi one because that one has to be on FAT32
I never knew this, though still a bit skeptical to try installing again
@@FishNChips-kq3hk Well, that's okay. But why it's a problem for you to have a separate /boot partition?
I just hate seeing a really small partition lying around that shouldn't have to be there otherwise. There are some distros that allow me to use btrfs for root partition without /boot so yeah.
Videos are sluggering just like on Linux mint?
on ubuntu many steam(deb) games lagged with NVIDIA driver
I tried both and ended up with Linux Mint
Mee too but when it comes to MySQL it's not working properly on mint😢
Videos are sluggering on mint
Replace snap with flatpak.
I pick Fedora 40 instead of ubuntu , don't like Snap
Hi can l playing pubg pc in fedora , thank you .
it is not supported on any linux with steam wine/proton. it is broken as of protondb.
99.9% every update on Fedora you have to restart. It's annoying
This wideo show Fedora os better.
Ubuntu is.. BUGbuntu.
fedora40. good.
i opted for endeavour os gemini thats just me tho. archlife
