      @entelin 2 месяца назад

@@phokeydhoo8940 So you're just like everyone else then that's missing the one thing they need for work. Because that's actually what people use computers for generally. Personally I've used linux since around 2000ish, and since I'm in IT I've generally been able to use it as my primary system that whole time except for gaming, until recently.
Regardless, in my IT consulting experience I've works for almost every industry out there and this has demonstrated to me conclusively that Linux *cannot* become the primary desktop platform, simply due to application support, every industry has their thing. For it to become dominant on the desktop, it needs 100% or better windows support.
The linux community is still fighting the battles it already lost in the early 2000's. Since then the whole paradigm has shifted. There isn't even the casual pc user any more, the "grandma that only needs a web browser", mostly doesn't exist, that's all cellphones and tablets, which linux doesn't even have an answer for. Everyone else are business users that have hard requirements on windows dependent applications.
Linux desktop usage doubled over the last few years thanks to steam/proton/wine. Because gamers started to have a choice. Most people still don't.

The "tearing" issue with i3 when resizing windows has nothing to do with actual tearing. You're simply seeing the lag time from between when i3 wants to resize a window, and when the window actually resizes. Wayland tiling window managers like sway implement something called transactions that essentially wait for the window to resize, before presenting the users with the updated screen. It's a really neat feature. I don't know how well Nvidia works on sway.

From my personal experience of using Linux for 2 years and watching a bunch of videos where people show off their own experiences, I've come to the following conclusion:
    1. Switching to a different operating system, no matter Windows, MacOS, Linux, it's never gonna be a smooth transition unless you are as lucky as me who plays 2 or 3 video games, listens to music, and use a web browser.
    2. Trying to use proprietary software or hardware on Linux scarcely works. Avoiding them at all costs is the best solution.
    3. More often than not, using Linux "the hard way" will work better than trying to use Linux "the easy way" (i.e. exclusively using terminal applications), albeit with some compromises.
My experience with Linux has been a ride between frustration and fun. One the one hand, it completely changed the way I use my computer and how I look at technology in general, on the other hand, there are still some serious issues with using Linux, which I was relatively able to avoid. Though I still love using Linux more than I ever enjoyed using Windows.
I actually found your channel because of Part 1, which I really enjoyed watching, but it also taught me a bit about other people's experience using Linux. Part 2 had the same effect to me, and I appreciate how you documented your experience using Linux in such a structured and impeccable manner. Amazing video!

I've had pretty much zero issues with Linux as a daily driver. Games work fine, hardware has worked fine (external hdds, audio interfaces, BT devices, USB network adapters...). Stil have half my rigs to move from Windows 10 to Linux (probably Nobara), one being my main gaming rig which I'm also rebuilding at the same time.
I'm not even a pro at Linux, I've managed hosting servers, but never really knew what I was actually doing back then, and I've tried Linux distros (mostly Ubuntu variants) every few years without luck, but Pop!OS was the first that actually worked and worked well. I couldn't break it no matter what I did. I even upgraded from Pulseaudio to Pipewire and nothing broke. I've been daily driving Arch Linux for almost 10 months now, and apart from the initial config and NVIDIA drivers install (and discovering that my motherboard was faulty) I have had literally no friction with my workflow. I think this stems from my hardware being quite old with most of it being 5 years old at least now, so I have had none of the compatibility issues you had to face. Diving into tiling window managers is a huge rabbit hole from my experience taking an unreasonable amount of time and energy to get things working like it should out of the box so I just stick to GNOME these days. I do respect you a lot for giving Linux another go even after all the issues and persevering through all the hurdles, most people, including me, would have given up after the initial issues

Arch is a huge time commitment. I have a friend that uses endeavouros just so he does not have to deal with the install of arch. I do love arch. It has broken on me 4ish times and 2 of those times I just have to wait for an update that fixes it. I started using hyper land with the dot files from my Linux for work, and it is great. Liva, your experience and feedback is absolutely invaluable. It reminds me of a few years ago when Linus and Luke tried using Linux and in the first day Linus tried to uninstall steam and borked his whole set up - that shouldn't happen and (I can't remember who it was) the distro maintainers quickly fixed the issue, made it easier to do the right thing when removing steam or w/e.
When a person like you, very curious, technical, etc., tries as hard as you did and puts in as much effort as you did, the issues you lamp-shade stick like a sore thumb.
I say all of this as a Linux user of MANY years. I don't have any of the issues you do, and wouldn't know about them if not for this video. I'm not a programmer, I'm not a video maker (editor, content creator, nothing of the sort), my workflow and opinions are very different than yours (like how I personally like KDE [but with a completely original set up, just the way I like it]) and have different hardware (AMD graphics card, external audio interface, etc) sometimes that I've bought specifically because of Linux support (like the audio interface, I was on the market looking for one, and in the process of choosing I went for a "safe" bet in terms of linux support) - so none of that matters (what I mean is that my personal experience doesn't matter to you, your workflow, the work you do, the experience you had).
I know this is not a video of you asking for suggestions or help. I will leave a couple anyways :)
    1. I think you would like the workflow of the so called Material Shell - it is built on top of GNOME but marries tiling with floating wonderfully. I don't use it tho (kde, yadda yadda)
    2. System76 is trying to have a harmonious set up of tiling and floating as well, making their own DE (most likely it will be unsuitable for you, as it will be brand new) but it isn't out, so I shouldn't even bring it up.
    3. OpenSUSE exists. You have dabbled in ubuntu and looked into mint, used pop, etc., now fedora, rocky, nobara. If you choose to stay in the mainstream OpenSUSE is next, and as an OpenSUSE Tumbleweed user, if you were to ever use it, I'd be glued to the screen to see what you thought of it. If you go towards niche then you are probably use Arch or NixOS or Fedora Silverblue etc., things that are more niche but at the same time more popular (in regards to: have people talking about it) nonetheless.
Lastly, I'll echo something I said earlier this year when craft computing tried and also failed to switch to linux (failed is a strong word, Linux failed him - it wasn't his fault, it was Linux's fault); you COULD light up the bat-signal and create a linux council of fans of yours who would then look into and help you troubleshoot the issues you have. It would probably work. It is an absolute shame that this is "needed". If a person like you, who is more technical than me, more patient than me, more curious than me, has to have someone like me around just because of my experience, Linux on the Desktop is a failed platform (for your specific usecase/hardware etc). Anyway.
If you were to ask me (personally) before attempting on your own, I'd probably tell you that Linux is not good for what you need to do. It was cool that you tried though, so that would have been a loss. Then the second thing is - I think it is better for you to set up Looking Glass for GPU-passthrough. So as soon as something gets in the way of you doing your work, you can just open a window into Windows and rest assured it will all work. I do it (with some Rx 460 from the thrash) for both Windows and Mac when I need it. It can be a bitch to set up, though.

@@Livakivi having shortly dabbled with it myself and knowing someone (online) who loves it, my TLDR is:
It's a corporate focused (so Fedora-esque) Arch-linux like system which was early with many great concepts, which are both strengths and weaknesses.
An example being it's Snapper software, which can shapshot and boot back into versions of the operating system, letting you postpone fixing broken updates.
But it's YAST configuration tool is very old and it's installer is one of the most broken I have ever used, failing in different ways on me after identical re-installs.
To me, OpenSUSE is my backup for Arch Linux (and derivatives), but not ready for me to commit to for neither desktop nor server use.
I'll also use this opportunity to mention my current distro of choice (for 2 years, after maining Linux for 6 years), Garuda Linux.
This is a relatively obscure layer distro built on top of Arch Linux, which among other things configures OpenSUSE's Snapper out of the box.
But it uses the more common and in my experience better Calamares installer, along with making many deeper tweaks that do not seem to affect system stability but which I like a lot.
Though it comes with it's own issues, for starters the default theme is HIDEOUS, Chaotic-AUR often has broken packages, requiring a manual AUR build anyway and the default FISH shell messes with Flatpak and many tutorial instructions.
And the elephant in the room, it's a even to Linux standards obscure distro which tries to deliver a opinionated base experience with KDE Plasma (in the flagship dr460nised edition).
But I do agree with the recommendations I have seen in the comments here on giving Arch Linux (based distros) a try.
Except for Manjaro though, while they haven't messed up significantly recently they have a bad track record and do not deliver on the supposed increased stability.
Either installing base Arch from scratch or even tweaking EndeavourOS or Garuda Linux also would make for an interesting video.
Sorry for going off on that tangent, but I hope some of this is useful to you.

@@Livakivi OpenSUSE has a few distributions. SUSE is like european Red Hat, OpenSUSE Leap would be like Rocky/AlmaLinux. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed would be like our Fedora/Rawhide, it is rolling-release so there are no numbered versions, but every update is thoroughly tested before being pushed. Aeon is like our Silverblue (no update will ever break your system, but you depend on flatpak). OBS/Factory is like COPR. But really everything is different in opensuse - so think of the comparisons as just that, a bit of explanation and not necessarily truly equivalent distros.
I used it for the first time in 2012 or so because "one click installs" sounded interesting, but it didn't hold me then. Many years later I was fed-up with Fedora, Ubuntu (and derivatives) and Arch, I had used Solus but it was in a bad spot... So that left me opensuse to try. Turns out everything (that I need, with my hardware, etc) just worked, so I stayed. I don't see anything elsewhere that I'd want and don't have with opensuse. We don't have as much software as in the AUR or Nix, so there's that, but I can't remember the last time I wanted to get something and there wasn't a solution for Tumbleweed. So idk, I just... use my computer now.

Huh, my comment seems to have disappeared after browsing through the comments again (which are that interesting), but it was still on my clipboard (as a backup), so here it is again.
If it was intentionally removed, sorry, if this is RUclips's filter, argh!
I'll remove the off-topic tangent and give this another dedicated comment though.
@Livakivi having shortly dabbled with it myself and knowing someone (online) who loves it, my TLDR is:
It's a corporate focused (so Fedora-esque) Arch-linux like system which was early with many great concepts, which are both strengths and weaknesses.
An example being it's Snapper software, which can shapshot and boot back into versions of the operating system, letting you postpone fixing broken updates.
But it's YAST configuration tool is very old and it's installer is one of the most broken I have ever used, failing in different ways on me after identical re-installs.
To me, OpenSUSE is my backup for Arch Linux (and derivatives), but not ready for me to commit to for neither desktop nor server use.
I do agree with the recommendations I have seen in the comments here on giving Arch Linux (based distros) a try.
Except for Manjaro though, while they haven't messed up significantly recently they have a bad track record and do not deliver on the supposed increased stability.
Either installing base Arch from scratch or even tweaking EndeavourOS or Garuda Linux also would make for an interesting video.
Garuda Linux also implementing said Snapper update snapshots from OpenSUSE, aside from the theme also making other deeper tweaks I happen to like.

    For having a STABLE workstation:
    1. Do NOT enable automatic updates, no matter which Distro (Update on a schedule, 1x/week for example)
    2. Have a Backup/Snapshot of your System & Data ready for when things go bad (look into BTRFS & it's snapshot capabilities, with tools like Timeshift or that like)
    3. Use YOUR Distro of choice (which you like the most, for me it's Debian [Testing] btw)
Voila, you're ~90-95% on the way to even if you experience breakage, you can just do the work & deal with problems when you have the time.

You didn't mention gaming in your use cases, so might I suggest using the amd igpu for rendering with Wayland(there isn't a better linux experience than amd on Wayland in terms of smoothness and things just working) and using the 4090 just as an accelerator card for video editing? Distros with older packages are no longer worth it. If you want the most stable experience, use Arch or EndeavourOs honestly. Thats what I would recommend. I suggest trying out both Sway or SwayFX (basically Wayland i3) and Hyprland, since Sway uses OpenGL as a backend and Hyprland uses Vulkan afaik. At least that's what I think because the RPi 4's VideoCore IV GPU only supports OpenGL and Sway works flawlessly, whereas Hyprland ran like it renders on the CPU.
Also the distro you use can really make a difference, mostly because of the Kernel it ships with. I guess you could try Manjaro, unless you want to go for Arch directly. I would've said try Fedora, but you already did and it seems they've changed a lot about it that just gets in the way.

Based on what you said in the outro, I seriously think that Arch would be a good fit for you. There's quite a lot of setup up front but once you get your system the way you want it, in my experience it's pretty difficult to permanently break it, especially if you have a proper backups system just in case you somehow pull a Linus (Sebastian) and uninstall your DE or GRUB or something. Seriously, give it a try. Worst case scenario it sounds like the sort of thing you'd get quite the kick out of and have some fun experimenting with, best case scenario you've got the best PC experience you've ever had.

Nobara is for the kid in the family that was the "tech wizard" because he knew how to install a printer driver on the family computer. They let it get to their head and considered themselves "tech experts" up until the point a Gentoo user dabbed on them with a custom kernel. So they installed Nobara so they could claim they know "How to use Linux" but really all they do is play video games and watch youtube on it (they use it exactly like their previous windows machine).

Windows 10 is hands down the best OS. The Start Menu is perfect for finding everything, unlike the weird Mac dock or Linux terminals. Plus, Windows is the king of gaming with all the best titles and platforms like Steam and Xbox Game Pass. I've been using Windows forever, and it just feels right-no need to learn a whole new system. All the essential software, like Word and Photoshop, works seamlessly on Windows. And let's not forget all the video editing software! Why struggle with anything else when Windows 10 just works? Another pointless video, hope your next video is more productive. Thanks Livekivi

You forgot that windows is paid, has ads, spys on you, you don't need to use linux terminal to open apps, is less bloated, etc. Plus Microsoft has a monopoly due to devs only making apps for windows because of its massive market share. Though for gaming and work windows is best for now, gaming can be a laggy pain if you need to use proton, and alot of apps for work ain't on linux. I use linux on my laptop for fun and screwing around, and windows 10 on my pc for bigger games. Also microsoft in their endless greed are ending support for windows 10 to get people to swap to the mess that is windows 11.

Watching this video made me realize how terrible of an experience running Linux on Nvidia is... I too get occasional minor graphical glitches on my Intel/AMD laptop but this is madness, it's like Nvidia users have been missing out on like 10 years of progress. Hopefully explicit sync support fixes as much of this mess as possible.
Also, I recommend using Hyprland for your WM. The community is a little cringe but the product is incredible, easily the best WM I've ever used. The devs somehow manage to add features at breakneck pace mostly without breaking stuff. Oh, and their wiki is very well made, too. It is a Wayland compositor, though.
    Great video as always, cheers!

Is the MIC a USB mic connected directly to front or back panel? if so I had random audio quality drops, distortion, in Firefox on windows 11, It might have been the motherboard audio but it was only in Firefox.
Not sure where the issue actually is, but audio was always perfect in all other software,, including Resolve.
But I switched to XLR mic and audio interface, problem solved. I use Rode AI-1 & PodMic, but had to use EqualizerAPO to boost the mic.So far I've only used Linux in a VM, I've tried several distros, so far Mint, Texudo, Fedora.

Oh and PopOS didn't install from any usb drive that's not under sda/sdb/sdc, which took me waaay too long to realize. In the end I just went back to Ubuntu, which worked out of the box.

As much as I do not want to rain on your parade nor devalue the Linux desktop, Pop!_OS has been one of the most problematic distro's I have tried so far.
While this is 2 years back, it managed to bloat log files to 10s of gigabytes and break updates by handling the bootloader partition wrongly.
Along with the desktop still being based on GNOME, bringing all related issues.
This while daily-driving Garuda Linux (a relatively obscure and opinionated Arch Linux layer distro) and having tried a variety of distros.
Including Manjaro (ugh), OpenSUSE (lacking support) and Clear Linux (royal.pain in the arse, but great for my server).
Given the issues which bothered Livakivi here along with my poor experiences with the distro, I disagree with the recommendation.

Solid video and analyses. I have had more windows related issues than on linux from my side, but albeit every time I try ubuntu/ubuntu based distros and even fedora I've always had a lot more issues than Arch/Endeavour or the current one I use CachyOS, the latter seems extremely efficient to all tasks, even davinci didn't trigger random hang/freeze. However I think the real issue with Linux is inconsistencies in the distros, with some distros which I tested I have had really breaking problems which drag the experience down, while other distros were exceptionally good. This doesn't look good to a newcomer that would just prefer a plug n play scenario, though with each windows update my system would get slower and I've also had a lot of crazy oddities there too, with random BSOD on perfectly functional hw.
In the end people should use the right tool for the job at hand, so it's best to use what works best for you :)

Regarding the gnome apps such as nautilus and gnome terminal being in white theme, it is because you installed plasma on top of gnome, since plasma forces GTK apps to match KDE theme, if you purge the plasma desktop the issue will be gone, or you can go to plasma settings > color & themes > application style > configure Gnome/GTK apps, and just set it to whatever theme you need. in case you still need a plasma desktop session.

This was an incredibly well executed and researched video. I'm sorry you had so many issues but as you clearly ran into and figured out, using new Nvidia hardware (or any Nvidia hardware at all) can be a nightmare. I think you made the right call going for Fedora based distros to get newer packages (even if Arch would have been better btw) but as you said I think Nvidia only really got close to good to use after the 555 driver under Wayland. I hope you come back and give it another go in a year or so's time and at that point I would recommend switching to Sway (a supposedly drop in replacement for i3) or one of the other Wayland tiling WMs such as River or Hyprland. I would definitely stick to Wayland though if you can. It doesn't fix everything and definitely has it's own pros and cons, but in general I think it makes more things better than it makes worse - especially if you don't want to spend lots of time tinkering to fully resolve screen tearing etc. I'm glad you could see some of the benefits that Linux offers - even if we're a **long** way off making it a painless process to actually setup and use.

Commenting before finishing the video (so I don't forget):
You can add tiling to DEs, like KDE for example which made it an official feature in plasma 6, I'm assuming by extension it's the same for gnome and others.
But of course, tiling managers still have lower ram, and by extension grant longer battery life.

Great video. Hope your journey with Linux continues to get better!
My two cents: if you have some spare change, get yourself an old PC, and install Arch+i3/Sway. Don't install the window manager alongside a full desktop environment because they will clash. With older hardware, you should have a more pleasant experience to tinker and get to know your system. Once you have a deeper understanding of how things work in the OS, then you can try reinstalling Linux on your production machine. I did something similar to you: I had only 1 laptop to work with 4 years ago when I switched to Linux, and it was NOT fun! Anyway, cheers!

You tried Linux again during a huge growing pain of moving from X11 to Wayland, I think that may have been why you had so many weird problems. Resolve did have a bad update at one point but was fixed in like a day, and the capture stuff sound like your wayland portals acting up (happened to me 2 or 3 times in the last 2 years, a reboot as usually solved it). I'm on Nobara myself and its been literally the only distro outside of Pop!_OS that has just worked for me.

This summs up A LOT of what I experienced trying Linux since 2016. Was never able to fully switch, I can try and choose my hardware to fit it (tough I never did), but I can't change what I do. A lot got better: mainly gaming and maybe stability. I'm only about q third of the video and the only mentioned issue that I did not experience was crackling microphone. In 2021 I got a mate book 14s, love the machine, only thing better for the money would maybe be a mate book 16. But fedora simply won't get the TouchPad and sound to work, under Ubuntu most things work fine, so I'm using it as a secondary os for now. But from time to time I run into issues, and because I'm dual booting the waste of space of having a flatpak, snap and native version of dependencies really bothers me. TouchPad scrolling and acceleration is also not as great on Linux, but it's usable. Really wish I could just simply switch, but there is a lot to still learn, and many small issues to solve.
