Almost been on this planet for 5 decades, grew up watching this show with my grandma and shared so many memories of Guiding Light. This theme brings happy tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Truly one of the best, if not the best, of it's genre.
I loved when eventually Kim Zimmer got an "and...Kim Zimmer as Reva" at the end of the crawl like Eileen Fulton did on ATWT playing Lisa. I know when Deidre Hall came back to Days in the 90s she made sure she was given a similar treatment. I also loved on ATWT when the announcer said "Furs by the Christie Brothers". So glamorous!
Wow. I have not heard this theme since it was on TV. I loved it when they showed the full credits and the theme repeated. I would do anything to join them tomorrow for another full hour of Guiding Light! :(
I love hearing the announcer's voice as he says, ".... this has been Guiding Light" and, "... be sure to be with us tomorrow for another full hour of Guiding Light" he does a slight pause between, "..has been - Guiding Light" " . . . fashions provided by Lily Rubin Salons South-Southwest and Barneys, jewelry by Stephen Dweck"
They made a big mistake cancelling it. It has been gone 11 years and many still miss it everyday. And look what they replaced The Guiding Light and As The World Turns with, things no one wants to see.
Cancelling As The World Turns was a big mistake; but Guiding Light had really, really plummeted to where it was just unwatchable and past the point of recovery.
I already know I'm crazy but I just loved at the end when the title fades out, the P&G fades in at the bottom, then fades out, then the title reappears. I always loved that!!!!!!!!!..... This title package for GL was not only stellar but the best one this show ever had!
@@markc-ru4qz Guiding Light was always the things a good soap should be. It only wavered in the end when people changed what they wanted and the show was given less in return.
all though not the first theme, this is the first I remember, as I was an 80s kid. I remember my mom and I would watch CBS. I was only about 4 or 5, but remember liking them, to this day, I still watch them, up until the very end of guiding light in 2009.
It is nice that Bert and Mike get first billing on the credits! Most of the shows would have put them in along with the other alphabetized cast members.
The person who was announced as the jeweller seemed to have been the one providing jewellery for the CBS soaps at the time, because I remember Bold and Beautiful's closing credits in 1987 having the same voiceover.
Trouble was they updated it twice. The final version was more 80's AC pop. This one would be more Classical Crossover and Easy Listening/Beautiful Music.
Still remembwr listening to this at 5 oclock..in canada..on floor model tv...in winter it was dark...mum cooking supper in kitchen...after the theme id usually have to run down ally to buy some pepsi ...and get her some cigs.......a diffrent time...ill treasure forever..
Yes, that was my favorite GUIDING LIGHT theme. I also like the closing credits when My Beloved Lujack died & Beth wore Lujack's leather jacket & got into his hospital bed after they took his body to Cedars basement morgue & Beth rocked herself, zipping up her beloved's leather jacket as the credits rolled...{sniffle snuffle SNORT}
"Ritournelle" was my favorite theme, but this was my second favorite , and as someone below posted they should've kept this theme song for the rest of the show's run, just making variations to update it. Except, I didn't like the jazzy, TV talk show version that they used later.
Didnt even watch...but my fav of daytime opening/ closing...i was a general hospitol watcher...but always watched gl closing credits over gh!! ..as soon as gh would end i switched over to hear gl theme!!
I like the end credits especially of the cast and to see who played who especially the lesser known characters in the cast the supporting recurring roles 👍
This era barely had Bauers though. With the exception of Ed, Mike was soon to be phased out. They already killed off Bill and Hillary, phased out Hope, and Bert... rest her soul.
I first remember hearing this theme when CBS used to show the classic episodes of the soaps one year. I was born in ‘89 but my mom remembered it. She watched the show on and off from a teen up until 1998.
I never heard this theme until now. I was 8 years old when this them was out but It sounds really good 👍. I watched guiding light in 1988 I was 15 and 16 years old a teenager. I like that theme song to. but the best theme song is in the 90's 1993 that was the best of all I believe!😇💯
This was a great era for gl I've been watching Peyton Place with Gail kobe who was gls producer at this time she was a great actress too! I miss you gl I could weep when I think of u!!
got hooked on this soap during the summer of 1982 after graduating high school in june of that year. I was able to get home most days from commuting to my first year of college in order to catch the show at 2pm. by the summer of 1984, my life changed and I stopped watching. it's nice to watch old episodes here and remember what my life was like back then - DAMN - that was THIRTY stinking years ago. Shit - I'm old :(
Haha looked up Guiding Light on a whim. I got hooked by my gram in the late 70's when I spent my summers at her house. There was no Tivo or DVR then , so at 3PM the phone and door were not answered until after 4PM. LOL
I am not a fan of soaps by any means. But I somehow came across this a while back. While I don't like soaps, I love music. Different kinds. And this theme song for GL is so beautifully done. Also very soothing and relaxing. I enjoy listening to this when I feel stressed out about something and need to relax.
@@jaredjlinden They used to do it based on the families, then they did it by seniority with the younger cast in ABC order. ATWT did theirs weird, maybe in order of appearance... Fashion's by Barney's... that must be the same men's clothiers that used to sponsor *NewsCenter 4* back in the day on the NBC powerhouse in New York, WNBC.
Love the music. It’s interesting seeing the cast, since most of the classic actors were written out by the Texas Regime and man did that destroy the show. Poor management at P&G
listening to this theme from tv speakers does not do it justice. sounds much better played through a stereo system, especially the booming bass - mmmmmmmmm ! ! !
For some reason, I started crying listening this. Maybe I am terribly missing the '80s. Maybe I can't believe how much 2020 sucks...😞
It makes me cry too you're not alone
I still LOVE when this announcer calls it, "The" Guiding Light ❤️❤️❤️

This theme was lovely, just lovely. Nearly as pretty as Ritournelle.
I get an "I Won't Hold You Back" by Toto vibe from this version of the GL theme; incidentally, 1983 is when that song was released.
