Great explanation. I’ve watched plenty of videos from macro photographers to try and understand how different specs of the lens effects the image and how you shoot. You have easily given the clearest explanation I’ve heard for a newcomer.
I´m so sad that Canon discontinued the EF-M-system. I still use my M6 mk1 with this lens and loving it. Such a compact camera kit and still delivering amazing photos. I don´t want to give up the portability of this system.
For me I went with the EF-S 35 macro using the M adapter on the M6. I thought about the native ef-m version but according to reviews the EF-S seems to be sharper. But I do really envy the small native size of this one
Mark, I own this lens. There is nothing "sort of" about it. As you mention, it's a great everyday walk-around lens. And - a high-performance macro lens. Thank you for the review. "Sort of the one side"?
Great video! I'm debating whether or not to buy this one for a upcoming trip to Europe. I normally use a Laowa 25mm or the Canon 100mm Macro, but also want something to take more standard range shots as well. This one covers both bases... I'm just worried because the quality and abilities of the other two lenses has spoiled me extremely badly 😆... but the footage still looks impressive.
I'm about to purchase this lens but can you clarify. It uses a 43mm filter which screws into the hood. Does the lens cap that comes with the lens attach to the hood with the filter attached? To use the LED lighting don't you have to remove the hood so it makes the filter kind of pointless?
Correct, but it you are using the lens outside, you wont always use ot need the light, and the recessed front element can be a bit hard to clean dust, light rain spots, etc off of.
@@markwiemels Does the lens cap that comes with the lens attach to the hood with the filter attached? The included lens cap looks different to the ones that came with my EF-M lenses.
Great video and nice explanation. Just wondering if you please can recommend this lens for beauty photos where I need portraits and closeups for details on face and lashes, brows hairs. I have a Canon EOS M50 Mark II Mirrorless Camera with 15-45mm Lens. Will Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens do the job? Or what settings I should make to the camera? Thank you 😊
I really appreciate your video presentation. Thank you very much.😊 I do you also need to factor in a 1.6 crap factor with this sensor and Lyn combination in order to interpret the actual 35 mm equivalent with this lens?
I just got this lens from canon MIne don't have a light. I don't understand it has the button for the light but no light. Am I missing something? Edit... I was missing something u have to unscrew the tip to access the light.. lol this is my first camera and it didn't come with any directions. I was rewatching this video and noticed your lens tip looked different so I lightly tried to unscrew it just incase and yay it worked!! Lol. Hopefully this helps someone else that don't know what they're doing like me. Lol. Have a great day guys ✌️
Having just bought a Canon R7, I am starting to wonder if I should get an EF-M to RF adapter, given the number of third party EF-M prime lenses available at a reasonable price...
I got the lense, messed with it for a bit, Love the quality of photo and video, But to showcase my product(Australian Opal) It seems to be having a hard time trying to focus on my fingers and the opal at the same time. Would setting a manual field of focus work better during video mode?
Hi Mark. Thanks for this. I've been watching your reviews for more than a year and found them helpful. Been thinking about getting this lens for a while but not sure about the short focal length. Do you have a recommendation for an EF-M macro lens more suited to insect photography?
I would adapt the EF 100mm micro or buy the dcr250 clip on macro lens to put on the front of the ef-m 55-200. If you do some googling you should be able to find images samples from both, to get some ideas.
Mark, where is the best place to install a UV protective filter ? On the outer of the 43mm lens hood ? or, just in front of the lens, roughly 22mm ( where the lens hood screws in ). Thanks, Bob
Hi l, can you recommend a lense for dental photography. With so many videos about lenses I'm really confuse now. I've m50 mark2 camera with the blog kit.
i was looking into this lens, specifically for close up food photography when i'm travelling. There happens to be one for sale locally for $140 cad or around $100 USD which is a steal. let me message the person now and hope i can get the lens
Thank you Mark, I ended up picking up the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 before seeing your video about it. Right now its kind of my all purpose lens. Do you have any recommendations for low light videography other than this EF-M 32? Its easily the nicest lens I have purchased, but I wanted to know if there are better video lens' for the EF-M platform, specifically for low light production. Thanks again
Using this lens for a while, a good package in compact form. But low light sucks and wide angle 28 mm not suitable for fast moving insects. Otherwise it is a good lens, and a great lens for food blogging. Gets that food colors and details popping up close.
Keeping the M50 relevant going into 2023!
Fighting the good fight.
It’s all about the M6 Classic (original) for me :)
bruv, i still use the bog standard EOS M everyday
Still in 2024...hehe

Hi.. What is the min focal distance? I want to use for tiny mushroom and flowers..
That was an excellent review of this lens. Thank you so much 😊

Hi Mark! I recently got into photography and just wanted to ask, would this lens work with the eos 3000D?

Could be useful for an EOS m 10 camera in order to make video of small object or for a eos m 10 doesn’t worth the money? Thank you

I had forgotten about this lens. Got to use it in the Canon Experience Store Melb and loved it. Great info as always mate
I forgot about that Canon place! I will have to go check it out!
This lens does work for the Canon m50 ? Do you need an adapter or something for the m50 ?
It works on the M50.
Thank you 🎉

Try shooing at f8 or f11, and get a lot of light on the subject.

I dont have the lens anymore, but I think the 43mm. You need to take the filter off to the light anyways.

I don't really know enough to advise, but there are dental photography forums on FaceBook, I would ask there.

Sigma 16mm 1.4. Low light beast, great for vlogging/video. No IS however.
It would either be the Sigma 16mm or Viltrox 23mm. Watch the start of my "Best Prime Lens" video, that will help you make the decision.
Thank You Mark
Own it, love it!!! (For my M6MK2)
Hi Mark; which lens would you recommend is suitable for shooting inside cars & caravans for classifieds ads? Luv your vids on the M50
EF-M 11-22 for sure.
Laowa 9mm f/2.8 zero D
Does this lens fit my EOS Rebel T8i ???
No, it's EF-M mount.
