I did not know how much I would enjoy this lens. I got it to complete my ef-m line up, and I was so pleased with it. It is fun to take macro pictures and I enjoy the 28mm focal length too.
nice, my completing lens was the 11-22mm, now i too have all the ef-m lenses except the older kit lens (18-55mm) The ef-m lenses give you the compactness you cant get with other lenses, though its great to go big when you need to for wildlife, such a great system is the M line
Christopher you are a great lens reviewer and personally the very best I seen in youtube. I have learned a lot since the moment a began watching your videos and I still learning, for example in this one at the first part of the video you didnt rush to talk about the specifics of the "Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 IS STM Macro" instead you start talking about the benefits of a macro lens in general and its disadvantages when is used handheld.. and I didnt knew about the handheld thing! once again Thanks for a well made video.
Worth noting this lens is 1.2x magnification with a focus distance of ~10cm where as the 35mm ef-s is only 1x magnification with minimum focus of 13 cm. So for mirrorless users this may be an objectively better option despite the focal length that seems "less suitable" for macro shooting. Serious macro shooters should consider the 2x Laowa lens anyway. This specific lens will be great for product photography and potentially even vlogging/webcamming with the wide angle and built in light.
Would you recommend this lens with the canon m50 mark ii for photographing artwork? Mostly paintings. Or is there another lens for that camera that would work better? Thanks so much and love your channel!
Your reviews are always very accurate and helpful. You did a review for 10 sharpest lenses for canon in 2014.I am eagerly waiting to see its new version.I am buying M5 but am very confused about the lenses .18-150 the kit lense or something else.I can use one or at most 2 lenses for travel.Money is not the issue but weight is.Will wait for answer. Thanks again for sharing your unbiased reviews.
I really like mine, but as you've said, the built-in lights don't always give the best results on reflective surfaces, being so close to the subject. I just leave the lens hood on covering the light and remove it when needed. Since it's close to the equivalent of the old 50mm standard lens and has such decent optical qualities, it's a good choice for a lot of everyday shooting, except for really low light of course. If I need further distance for macro shooting I just use my 100mm f/2.8 Canon macro liens with the adapter, but it feels a bit unwieldy on the tiny M3 body. Nice review.
interesting so it has a 22mm thread but if you add a lens hood you can use 43mm filters but also blocking the light effectively, what a quirky little lens!
I suspect it's because if you had a filter on and could use the lights, the image would be swamped out with glare bouncing off the *inside* of the filter, still, it'd be nice to have the option even if it's questionable
i've had this lens for two years and its saving grace is the light on the front making it out perform more expensive dedicate lenses if you are shooting with no other lighting as for Bokeh, the way the elements in the lens are formed gives out of focus highlights a horrible doughnut shaped appearance at normal distances, not the lovely types you see from other modern lenses or vintage ones. for close up macro in darker places its a great lens,
jup, the EOS M has some admirable lenses in its lineup that are cheap also! Canon knows how to to lenses really. I would have loved a 22mm f2 pancake for my sony aps-c.. Unfortunately they dont have too great cameras to back it up. The M5 is the first interesting in the lineup for me, but now, i purhchased a used A7 for less - quite ridiculous that a fullframe camera is cheaper than a mediocer aps-c body..
Stephan Wahlen Sony cameras don't keep their value well (frequent updates to the hardware). The M5 is pretty over priced initially too admittedly so I expect the value of that to drop fast too.
Your reviews are always great. Is there any advantage to choosing to adapt the Canon EF-S 35mm F2.8 instead of the Canon EF-M 28mm f3.5 for macro photography on the Canon M50?
Gracias por el video, muy interesante. Lo que me dejó preocupado es que dices que no serviría para insectos porque hay que aproximarse, entonces qué tipo de lente permite hacer macro sin aproximarse? Gracias
@Christopher Frost Photography Will you be reviewing the new 35 mm macro for APS-c cameras anytime soon? I'm thinking about getting my hands in one, but I, as always, would love to see your tests first.
New subscriber here, your reviews are very good and informative. Maybe this is the new lens for my "original" EOS M, seems good and that light is a clever idea.
Hi Chris love your reviews. Will you be reviewing the tamron 18-200 di iii vc ef-m any time soon.. As i was thinking of getting this lens rather than the 18-150 kit lens..
Sadly not as I'm on the other side of the world, but am connected with 24-7 prayer so know ALL about it. Would love to get to spend some time there though!
Hi Chistopher! Thanks for all the videos and reviews. My name is Mariana. I and my partner are feeling the need to buy a new lens. We photograph Weddings and we'd like to buy a wide or zoom lens. We work with both a Canon 5d Mark II and a Canon 7D, and we have about 600 dolars to spend. Which one would you recomend (something with excelent sharpness)? Thank you already! Best regards! Mariana.
Hey Chris, I have a 70d and use a kit lens and a 50mm1.8. I'm looking to get a Rokinon 35mm or a rokinon 14mm. Will the 35mm give me the same picture as the 50 since I'm using a crop sensor? If so I want to get the 14
It doesn't work like that. You need to /always/ multiply by 1.6 to get the equivalent focal length. So, on your APS-C camera, any 50mm lens is the full-frame equivalent of 80mm, and any 35mm lens will be the equivalent of 56mm, and any 14mm lens will be the equivalent of 22.4mm
hi chris, i like shoting landscape photography and i have watched your wide angle lens battle and i chose the canon 10-18mm but i want to put lee filter system so i am afraid about the plastic mount not holding the weight of the filter system so do you recommend the 10-22mm or the plastic mount of the 10-18mm is just fine?
You meant to tell me I've been wrong all along? I thought macro lenses don't focus to infinity! So in poor words is better to have a macro lens as it can focus from a few millimetres to infinity?
Yup, and the short telephoto versions usually work very well as portrait lenses too. This one would probably be okay for portraits, but you'd get better bokeh from a telephoto. Luv that little built-in light though!
PIGASUS you might be thinking of using extension tubes with a normal lens to allow macro photography. in that situation you lose the ability to focus to infinity.
Which lens do you recommend...? This lens or the 22mm pancake? I need a fast prime for my eos m10 for everyday us but want to make some macro-shots,too.. I´ver heard that the 22mm can focus closely, too Also, with the 22mm, it is possible to put my eos m10 into my anorak-pocket, so that´s also very nice!
This lens and its lack of any distortion might just be enough for me to finally buy an eos m series camera. Thankfully I already have a Canon SL1 and it and the m series both use the same batteries. Any suggestion on which canon m series to by first? The m5 is quite expensive.
Mark Zola81 no. both are mirrorless so Theres no space. i think a More extreme lens with built in light exists, manual focus. then also you could use a ringflash vor ringflash Adapter. there are other excellent laowa macros for you
no, there is no adapter to be fit beetween this and the A7's E-mount, also this lens needs electrical signals to operate aperture, focus and light. Lastly, this is an aps-c lens and not much use on the a7. Get the native sony 90mm or 50mm macro or the 60mm laowa 2:1 macro. Samyang 100mm might also be an option.
there's a new Sony 50mm macro that isn't one of their really expensive lenses. I use an old Konica 55mm 3.5 macro, that cost me about $30 an adapter and a few extension tubes for macro photography.
I just got this lens. Has anyone noticed a clicking noise when focusing (not during video recording)? The 15-45 kit lens is silent, but there's definitely a slight focusing sound in this macro lens.
ok mate thanks for the reply, could you recommend a 35mm lense for the sony a7 that isn't to pricey,I've noticed the sony lens collection are very pricey
the 28mm F2 is a good affordable lens that close to 35mm. Sony recently put out the very affordable 50mm F1.8 so if you're willing to be patient I think you'll see an affordable 35mm from Sony soon. Of course with an adapter there's a world of 35mm lenses you can use on the A7.
I was thinking about that the other day. I do tend to like most the lenses I test actually...because they're just getting so good these days! I don't know, perhaps I'm too forgiving haha. Some bad ones do come along occasionally.
I have read some horrible things about the yi m1, fellow UK youtuber Mat from +techmoan has one plus.google.com/+Techmoan/posts/VFDLEoSr4Nw Maybe you two can do a collaboration video and cross pollinate your channels a bit :)

Whenever I get a new push message about a new video from you I am so excited!! I love your reviews!!
Really like your reviews, to the point, unbiased, clear and in-depth. Much appreciated!
Your review was very helpful! Can't decide between the 28mm and 22mm.
Depends how much you want macro :-)
Christopher Frost Photography What do you recommend for vlogging and bokeh photography? Thaanks!
Probably the 22mm lens, although for very out of focus backgrounds you'll have to get close to your subject
Thank you! Your review was a great help! Thanks for answering my question. 😊
what is better the 28 or 22?
Got mine today and I LOVE it so far. Now, to learn macro. What a treat.
I did not know how much I would enjoy this lens. I got it to complete my ef-m line up, and I was so pleased with it. It is fun to take macro pictures and I enjoy the 28mm focal length too.

The 18-150 is one other option. If you're happy with two lenses, than I would go for the Canon 18-150 and 11-22
Christopher Frost Photography Thanks
Great video Chris! Can't wait for some more high quality EF-M lens reviews!
That light in front of th lens is really a neat idea. Really helps with hand held macro since i wouldn't need a heavy flash

I love this idea, it's the sort of crazy thing I'd expect Sony to come up with. I hope other companies can take inspiration from this.
@Foto4Max Not this one.
Really decent to the point type of review, thanks!
Thanks Christopher! Just the info I needed to make a sound decision!

Lens like this make EOS M system more attractive, especially when M5 comes.

You called it a "wide-angle". I don't think 44mm equivalent qualifies as wide-angle.
Thank you a lot for the Video. It just confirmed my order for it.
Greetings from Germany :)
Thank you for making ef-m lens review clips. It's very hard to fine one.
Such a cute little lens. Another interesting review. Thanks.
just to get this right (im new to all of this) this lense can go on to any camera which has a ef-m adapter
Hmm 🤔 is the whole ring on the lens supposed to light up or is there just two lights/ light modes?
I talk about that in the video
I wonder how well this could work for digitizing slr photographs or film
Hi Dear what about RF 35mm 1.8
'Dear'?
I'm assuming filters dont fit on this?
Your reviews are always great. Is there any advantage to choosing to adapt the Canon EF-S 35mm F2.8 instead of the Canon EF-M 28mm f3.5 for macro photography on the Canon M50?
If you ever plan to switch to an ASP-C Canon camera like the 90D the 35mm lens will still be of use.
Thank you for another excellent review!

un tele con macro, ejemplo el canon 100 mm macro

This is "the" lens for the m series.
thanks for the review
@Christopher Frost Photography Will you be reviewing the new 35 mm macro for APS-c cameras anytime soon? I'm thinking about getting my hands in one, but I, as always, would love to see your tests first.

Awesome review. Thanks.
is that gandhi in the note macro ?
would the sigma 56mm be a better option for micro/macro if i had a secondary light source and possibly tripod?
That Sigma lens is not a macro lens
Is this EF-M28 mm macro lens compatible with EOS 80D ? A non mirror less camera...
Hi Chistopher! Thanks for all the videos and reviews. My name is Mariana. I and my partner are feeling the need to buy a new lens. We photograph Weddings and we'd like to buy a wide or zoom lens. A good option might be the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD
If I had a Canon M mirrorless camera it would be my first choice of lens.
So, on your APS-C camera, any 50mm lens is the full-frame equivalent of 80mm, and any 35mm lens will be the equivalent of 56mm, and any 14mm lens will be the equivalent of 22.4mm
another good and complete review, thanks

The plastic mount should be fine, unless you seriously abuse it

Hey Chris ? can you review the Olympus em1 mark II ? and 25mm 1.2 pls.... I need to watch and your suggestion 😄 thank
Sorry, I don't review Olympus or any Micro 4/3 equipment
ok sir chris hehe thank you
Any idea how the image quality compares to the EF-S F2.8 macro?
Very similar I think
@@christopherfrost thanks! Comes down to what's cheapest I suppose and bit extra bulk with efs version.
Can you review the new 18-135 USM Canon Lens? Love your videos!

Thanks Chris.
Chris, what do you think of the efs 35mm f2.8 is macro? It also has a light.
When it comes out I'll take a look. I imagine it's very, very similar to this lens
Will you get the m5 when it comes?
I really want to but...I need 4K.
nobody 'need' 4K ;)
I do - for all kinds of reasons. I don't need it for the final output, but I need it for footage I can work with dynamically when editing.
maybe for future proof reasons.
but, really, there is no need for 4K since it consumes alot of hardware resources .
I have hardware recources
Gracias por compartir tus experiencias y pruebas! Un saludo desde Argentina! I love ur videos and test, do you have flickr?
May I use it with Canon EOS M200 and EOS M50? As I have both cameras
Yup
Do you know of other brands that make a more affordable lens for the M series? Thanks.
Loads. Take a look at my channel, under the playlist 'lenses for mirrorless cameras'

can you talk about sigma 24-70 f/2.8

Please please review the Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC
great review!
Good one. Great guy!
what extension tubes would I purchase to use with this lens?
If you can find EF-M extension tubes, then I probably wouldn't want to go any longer than 24mm. Watch my Photo101 video for more info
Does this work good for video? I would be using a small tripod so I'm not worried about shake.
Sure, it'll be fine. Depends what you mean by 'work good' [SIC]
Will it work on the canon m50
All Canon EOS M lenses will work on EOS M cameras
Very good review ...pro ✌
i really enjoyed the review, thanks, i cant afford it right now, but it might be just what i need :)
