I finally bought mine and I love it, came right back here to thank you again for this awesome review, you helped me decide to buy it. Keep up the awesome work.
I’ve had this lens for about a couple of months now and i use it almost on a daily basis. I have to say it’s definitely one of my favourite lenses so far, given its versatility.
Absolutely love this lens. For photography it is exceptional and extremely versatile, but I will say for video the 50mm Equivalent FOV can be a little tight, and even with the IS on, your handheld footage can still end up extremely shaky. Despite that, I still recommend this as one of the best first general-purpose primes you can get for the Canon crop system. Excellent review as always.
Dear Christopher, I would be curious about your opinion: For a Canon M50, would you rather settle for a Canon lens EF-S 35mm 2.8 + adapter ring or a Canon lens EF-M 28mm 3.5 ? Many thanks for your kind answer.
Chris, this isn't a wide angle macro lens because of the 1.6 APS-C crop you get a field of view of 56mm. The 35 IS plus the 10-18 IS make a great hiking kit with my 70D.
I bought one for my 7d a while back but got carried away with vintage glass on my 5d mkii.. but...finally took it out. As its like a 56mm on an aps-c it's surprisingly useful. Just as a normal "nifty fifty" it's really very good very very fast autofocus. And as you always have the option of macro it becomes extremely practical quickly. And it's probably the lens my camera meters the best with. Also the macro light allows for a lot of tricks in low light. The IS means you can keep it open in lower light probably by a stop or two. I find the image quality absolutly superb. For depth of field it wins as you can get so close! I find I rarely shoot anything over 2.8 anyway so this doesn't seem like a limitation on this lens. Oh..God got mentioned :/ it was going so well..
Diffraction sets in earlier close up because at 1:1 the effective aperture is 2 stops smaller. At 1:2 it is one stop smaller. It's also why diffraction occurs at wider apertures with extension rings. This effect increases as the magnification increases.
Not too many reviews on this lens but its honestly one of my favorite. Some of my shots are hit and miss but i'm pretty sure its user error. Overall it's very sharp and fast. I also like the 35mm focal length. Nothing but good to say about this baby.
This is so much better than the nifty 50mm with the images stabiliser and 35 mm on crop sensor its great. And macro is amazing as wel.l Makes it my go to lens. I shoot 90% of shots with it.
Many great information there. There are special Tripod-Mounts the macro slider tripod heads. (They start already at around $10). There are also "mounting plats" with integrate micro adjustment e.g. by NiSi and Manfrotto (as far as I remember). Also have to at short focal length give you more DoF than long e.g. 100mm or 160mm macros this might be appreciated especially hand help - since it is really really hard to get the sharpness where you want it to be with long macros.
Thank you again Chris. Sadly this lens was officially discontinued by Canon today. I managed to grab a used one on eBay for a decent price but many of the new ones are going for $600.US+ !!
FINALLY!! This is totally unrelated but I recently found your videos and it’s been bugging me that your voice sounds so familiar to a voice I’ve heard before on a movie except a male version, I knew it was from Harry Potter but I couldn’t think of who it was until now. It was Luna Lovegood, you have a gentle and soft voice like hers, just deeper. Yeah it’s random but I needed to say it! And btw nice videos too!
Christopher Frost I noticed that my favorite Macro Lens (EF 50mm 2.5 compact macro ) is one you haven’t reviewed and it is fairly cheap as far as macro lenses go at $200USD
Smart design from Canon! Glad to see then trying new stuff with their lenses (unlike their camera bodies) they're definitely more focused on optics than electronics these days
I don't know why I have never subscribed before. When I want to review a lens I do a search for the the lens and then pick Frost's review. Today I subscribed. Have the lens but haven't used it much. Some Pic ideas have come to mind. Though I better read Frost's review first. H is great. f8 and f5.6 here I come.
Enjoyed the review Chris. Honestly when I first seen this lenses announcement I thought of my wife, she loves food photography.. I think she has posted a photo of everything we have eaten for the past 5 years.. LOL
I have an EOS M6 and EF-EFM adapter, which macro lens would you recommend, this or the 28mm EFM native lens? I like having the native lens but the 28mm is only at f3.5 compared to this one, which is at f2.8. What are your thoughts?
Hmm, well, personally I'd go for the native lens because I don't really like using adaptors, and the 28mm lens is much smaller. But if you don't mind the adaptor then this lens might be optically a slightly better performer
love the video! that lens is so nice! ive been wanting to get a macro for ages and I had been talking to the guys at canon on their live chat and they recommended this lens and that's how I found your video! I think im going to go for it!
are there macro lens that open to f1.4? because we could put several teleconverters without being limited by diffraction the only objective that is close to it is the laowa 60mm f2.8 macro 2X indeed on the side of the object it has an aperture of f1.4 and it equates to a macro lens f1.4 with a 2x teleconverter.
I mean for microscopy it's fundamental, if you add three 2x teleconverter on a f1.4 macro lens you have a 8:1 f11 macro lens, that has a better resolution than 3 teleconverter on a f2.8 macro lens that turn into a 8:1 f22 lens that is strongly diffraction limited.
I mean....like....sure, but I think it will be quite expensive. A normal 85, 105, 135mm f1.4 is quite expensive already, not to mention when it needs to have macro capability as well. There are other options that may fit your needs: 1. Canon makes MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro. 2. Extention tubes instead of a teleconverter maybe a better options if you can get really close to your subject. Something like a 200, 150mm macro plus extention tube
no, extension tube isn't enough to reach 5:1 macro but reverse ring can do that But teleconverter allow to create a 8:1 macro lens that can reach infinite focus without the need of disassembling and reassembling everything.
Hey Chris! Thanks for the video! Been thinking about this lens for a while and I was hoping to get your thoughts on using this on the eos m system. I know that there's a native 28mm f3.5 macro and I also watched your review of that. How do the 2 compare? 35mm fl and f2.8 seems more appealing to me. I wonder if the battery drain on the camera while using the built in light would be the same? Would really appreciate your thoughts!
@@christopherfrost Thanks for the suggestion. I do have 50 1.8, but my wife is tall, so it is hard to take full body portraits with some environmental elements with it. This is the reason I want to purchase a 35mm for my Canon 77d.
Hi Chris! Nice video! Quick question, if it's more for food photography and still life.. would this one be better or the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM instead? A lot of food photographers say they prefer the 60mm.
I'm really torn between this lens or the 60mm macro. On one hand, the 60mm macro lens can be used from a distance (both will require tripod either way) but on the other hand, this one has IS, built-in light and is more modern. Can someone (who has preferably worked with both) help me out?
Great voice!! Great Great Voice!!!! You need a TV show man! Great channel all around!! Would you please recommend a good Canon EF lenso for macro video. It will be shot using a Canon T5i. I would like to shoot videos of board games and their pieces. I’m hoping to avoid setting up lights. Thank you so much Chris.
This lens is for canon aps-c dslr cameras, but it's on the "Lenses Only for Mirrorless Cameras", just telling you so you can move it to the correct playlist.
Hi Chris! How does this lens compare to the RF 35mm f/1.8 version? I'm trying to choose between Canon APS-C DSLR and mirrorless fullframe based on the lens collection!
Hi, I'm learning to scan prints, negatives and slides with my camera and in the market for a macro lens for my canon m6, and fell upon this lens and the 28 3.5 and really enjoyed your videos and was wondering which of the two you would recommend? I was also considering using my 5d mrkiii, but definitely can't afford the macros for that camera. Any help is greatly appreciated, hope you are well and safe. Cheers!
Another fantastic review thanks I have eos 90d i want your opinion for amature macro do you suggest this 35mm or 100mm Canon lens these days the price of 100mm 2.8 macro usm L is 720€
Hi Chris I juts got my macro lens like this one. What setting they work ? I have EOS M50 mirrorless ....I am feeling kind overwhelmed. The thing is I can’t see anything from far like the pictures normal photos
The labeling on the filter in this video reads 'Aico coated uv 27mm japan'. A lot of people around the web found their 27mm filters doesn't fit this lens, I assume it's about the thread pitch size which commonly can be 0.75 or 0.5mm. Unfortunally I've no idea what pitch size you have to go for with this one. There's little to none information I could find about this detail, yet.
Can I use that lens for archaeological macro photography ? I'm a PhD student in Classical Archaeology and I'm looking for a good macro lens for my Canon 2000 D camera.
I like it that you are using M3 as your test camera. This makes it easier for me to choose my next lenses since we have the same camera. Anyway, would you be able to review Tamron 18-400mm? Thanks!
First of all, very good video, and secondly I have a doubt. Will this lens be compatible to use it in a "Canon ef-eos m" adapter, to later use it in a Canon eos M 100 Mirrorless Camera, with aps-c sensor ?.I would appreciate an answer.
@@ShawnHineidi Hi, would you like to tell how was your experience with this lens in close-up videos? Please share if you may have shoot macro videos using this lens?
Canon, Nikon and Sigma's are, but Neewer make an excellent ring flash for £60 that can be fitted to a huge variety of lenses. Granted they are a bit unwieldy, but you get plenty of power and an 'actual' flash.
1 thing i never see in a macro lens review is how close you need to get to take a picture if i want to take a macro shot of someones eye do i need to almost push it against their eye or can i have some distance?
Barrel distortion eh? That is disappointing. I was hoping that this 35mm efs lens would have no distortion like the 28mm macro lens for the EOS m cameras had. How is it that Canon is able to make a wider angle lens with no distortion and then fail at making a distortion free lens for what is in effect the same lens design with a slight zoomed in Field of view?
So... forgive me I am newish to cameras but do know a lot now, but since this is for efs cameras, that means it’s designed for cameras such as the m50 correct? And will that interfere with using it with eos cameras? Please feel free to correct my terminologies if incorrect, I will appreciate it :)
The M50 is a mirrorless camera. This lens is for digital SLRs. So, it will fit onto your camera, but you will need an adaptor (Canon EF-EF-M). Lenses that fit straight onto Canon's mirrorless APS-C cameras carry the EF-M or 'M-mount' designation.
Thank you for the review Chris...I’m new to macro and I want to start with handheld macro photography.. I have a tripod but I find it bothersome.thinking of selling it 😬buying this spring season but between this lens and the efs 60mm macro which do you recommend? 100mm macro is out of the question as I dont see the need for it..I don’t see the logic using an ef lens to an aps c sensor camera even if it works, im not willing to spend the money for it. will pair it with canon eos 80D by the way.. Thank you and God Bless 🙏😁
Could you tell me wich 27mm filter are you using in the video? I've bought one 27mm filter to protect the lens, but it doesn't fit well, the thread is not good enough to adjust correctly in my 35 mm f/2.8 STM macro lens. Thanks for this great review, it helped me a lot.
@@WattoPhotos hi! no, I wish I knew the model he shows on the video because I prefer to protect always my lens with filters. Mine is the same size but it doesn't fit well, it falls out :(
@@LauraSantamera I have just read Canon says that the lens is not designed for a 27mm filter even though there is thread for a filter. The filter he uses looks like 27mm Kood High Quality Optical Glass UV Filter Made in Japan. The Maxsima foto - 27mm UV LENS is one I tried and it don't work.
@@WattoPhotos that is great information. The one I've tried is Cellonic 27mm UV filter, and it didn't work. I know canon have their special ES-27 hood to this lens, with it you can put filters. But this hood is expensive and it hides the light. I was thinking of trying another type of hood but when I saw this video I thought that 27mm filter would be a nice solution for me, but it didn't fit... I will try the model you told me, I will let you know if it fits or not. Thanks!
The writing on the filter reads 'Aico coated uv 27mm japan'. It might be about the thread pitch which can be 0.75 or 0.5mm. Unfortunately I've no idea what exact pitch will fit this one.
Im using a Canon 1300d - - Yongnuo 50mm 1.8mm - Sigma DC OS HSM 50-200mm f/F4-5.6 I have some other lens but they are literally awful and only cost £30 or less....would the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM for £210 be worth it and add an extra speciality to my photography setup?
Hey chris would you recommend this efs 35mm or the 100mm usm (non L the golden one) the laowa 25mm 5x or the laowa 100mm 2x?I'm new to the macro photography game
I’ve been doing some research on this too. It depends what you want to shoot. As he mentions in the video, the image stabilization isn’t ideal unless you have a tripod (for still life). So portraits, animals, insects or anything that moves is out. Still learning though
I heard somewhere that taking your camera/lens(i donno which one) to sea shore will get it damaged due to the salted air there. Is this true or a hoax?
Yeah, that's the reason why I stay with aps-c canons, it gives access to EF and EF-S lenses and the 1'6 crop factor is a huge boost for macro and telephoto. Although full frames like 6D are better for portrait.
The combination of the IS and included light are really cool, especially for those just getting into the world of macro

Since it is for the APS-C format, it cannot be described as a wide angle lens - more like a standard lens (full frame equivalent).
I think I said it was a wide angle for a macro lens - which, comparatively, it is (although there are even wider angle options available)

A 1.4 aperture for macro photography is rather pointless. You would get much less than 1mm depth of field at 1:1 distance, which is of no use really.

Canon, Nikon and Sigma's are, but Neewer make an excellent ring flash for £60 that can be fitted to a huge variety of lenses. Granted they are a bit unwieldy, but you get plenty of power and an 'actual' flash.
1 thing i never see in a macro lens review is how close you need to get to take a picture
if i want to take a macro shot of someones eye do i need to almost push it against their eye or can i have some distance?
With a 35mm lens you will have to get pretty close - maybe better to get a 100mm lens
Hey Chris! When are we gonna see that new Tamron 24-70?? :D
It's only a /little/ barrel distortion - not uncommon for a wide angle lens
Question.. would this lens work with the Canon SL2/200D????
Is it good for insect photography??
You might want a 100mm macro lens for that, to get the working distance you need
@@christopherfrost thank you for your suggestions ❤
Could you make a video about the different ring flash options ?
Nah, not enough time to be honest
So... forgive me I am newish to cameras but do know a lot now, but since this is for efs cameras, that means it’s designed for cameras such as the m50 correct?
This 35mm lens will be much, much easier to use
Christopher Frost Photography yay.. thank you..I’m not gonna wait for the spring anymore.. I’ll buy as soon as I get my next paycheck 😁 God Bless
Same problem did you solve?
Im using a Canon 1300d -
- Yongnuo 50mm 1.8mm
- Sigma DC OS HSM 50-200mm f/F4-5.6
I have some other lens but they are literally awful and only cost £30 or less....would the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM for £210 be worth it and add an extra speciality to my photography setup?
tamron's 90 mm macro?the latest one please..
Hi Chris when using an EF-S lens on an EF-M camera how much difference is there in picture sharpness etc. compared to an APSC camera?
None (IMO) - unless your adaptor is broken
Hi, thanks for the review! I wonder if I can use this lens with a Canon EOS M2 or M10?
With an adaptor, yes. Just get the native 28mm f/3.5 Macro lens - it's designed for mirrorless cameras
Thanks for your reply! I will take your advice and get the 28mm f/3.5 Macro! Thanks again!
Hey hey Chris Happy Winter man
Hey can I ask you? Can you make some commentary in a few videos for them to lower prices? We would buy more actually
You're asking me to ask Canon to lower their prices? You overestimate my influence, I'm afraid!
What adapter did you u use for the eo m3 to ef-s
Can I use the extension tube to mount a teleconverter behind it?
Hmm, I have no idea, sorry!
@@christopherfrost Thanks
Is it weird that I’m thinking about buying this for video?
what do you prefer this lens or the 100mm 2.8 ?
Personally, I prefer this one
Interesting video. What lens do you suggest for my canon 60d to take pictures at parties day and night
Jowayne Bell The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art might be good
Thank you Christopher Frost, i just watched your review of that lens.
which one do you think is better option 28 mm or 35 mm macro for my m50
You should get the 28mm version, then you won't need an adaptor
Sorry Chris you forgot the excellent 60 mm f 2.8 efs lens which has been on the market for an age. Other wise a great review as always 😎😎😎
I've tested that lens already :-)
Very good video. I Have this lense now and i like it :-)
I heard somewhere that taking your camera/lens(i donno which one) to sea shore will get it damaged due to the salted air there. Is this true or a hoax?
It would only be a problem if you were doing that all the time, I imagine
Dear, Can this lens be compatible with Canon 200d?
Yup
Wich extension tube brand did you use?
Just a cheap one - 'Kaavie' brand. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
So would this still be good for insects? Why not?
Not ideal - the wide angle focal length means you'll have to get so close to them that they might fly away
Wish they made for full frame. I mean like for canon 6d mark 2
Yeah, that's the reason why I stay with aps-c canons, it gives access to EF and EF-S lenses and the 1'6 crop factor is a huge boost for macro and telephoto. Although full frames like 6D are better for portrait.
Bungee Gum I do have aps-c camera that is rebel ESO Sl2 canon. Maybe I can get that. So far I have 2 canon camera. Smile thanks for the tips.
