The smile that came over Brad’s face when they hit the payoff line in the lyrics which explains what the song is all about…priceless.
Yes! I usually get miffed when he doesn't let the poetry of the lyrics just "wash" over him. Seeing the satisfaction he got here, like you said, priceless.
Such a badass line.
"I'm you, sad but true"
Tells so much, if you FEEL it !
Yeah you could see his face when it sunk in :D "I'M YOOOUUUUUUUUU!!!"
Yes!
I was thinking that music is a example of music w plot twist, right? You guys have a music like that to show to me? I fucking love plot twist stuff
You know what's really sad about this song?
IT'S ALREADY 30 YEARS OLD!!!!
Good Lord, where did my life go???
From James 4:14
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
It happens to everyone. The rest of the book is a good read too, in case you haven't.
I was in basic training when this came out. Enter Sandman lit up the barracks on the radio several times per day.
The worst statement on the internet today!
If you discount the most memorable moments & focus on the little ones, you'll realize it was a very long journey that you survived while millions of others did not.
Indeed....my youth was 30 years ago :) Damn..:)
Lex: "This is heavy, even for Metallica".
James Hetfield on every tour: "Do you like heavy metal? Do you want some heavy now?" Sad but true begins. 🤘
'Tallica gives you heavy, baby!
@@inawinchester 4 chinas and a G power chord
He also presents the song as a "happy tune" in some concerts.
Lol what? This is heavy?
"This is a heavy M'fer called...THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE!!!!"....
-Jason Newsted
Bro. Your smile when it ended was very satisfying. (Pause)
When the last line dropped "I'm You", you realized how simple the entire song really was. Human nature, The Shadow of Self... Good shit!
Absolutely. That smile when reality dawned. Very good!
It's clearly about drugs though
@@justinatest9456 i think it's about The part of you that you don't show other people.
I always thought it was just life in general. The first line is simple but yet so powerful. Our consciousness and sub-conscious combined in a song.
I’m just trying to make it out the hood by doing reaction videos while high asf on my RUclips channel 😪😪
I've always taken this song to be about all the excuses we make for our own behavior. "I was drunk/ on drugs", "The Devil made me do it", etc. This is James' critique on that, basically calling BS and saying "No, that's just you/ just who you are". Our true selves are usually determined by what we think and do when we think nobody's looking.
That's bang on. People are evil, the things everyone of us has thought about and done when no else was there... but God was there, that's why we all need saving by Jesus crucified.
Exactly...the title lays it out very plainly...no excuses, your lowest lows and darkest truths is part of who you are...sad but true.
"I'm inside open your eyes
I'm you"
People don’t blame the devil. They blame on everything : men, mothers, whites, companies, society....
They never blame on themselves
Or doing something in the name of God, whichever one you believe in. You are still responsible for your own actions
One of my favourite song by them, and the whole Black Album is brilliant. 🔥
It’s one of the all time great albums imo
Gotta disagree...... I hate most of the album. This song and don't tread on me are the exceptions. Commercially there biggest, but musically inferior to the 3 prior albums, and while not the best recording..... kill em all is also, musically better.
@@mikemclaughlin3306 its that situation when commercial success equal to music quality. My opinion. And many people agree with me. 🤷♂️
@@alexanderkudryavcev1226 because it's simpler. It's less aggressive...... it's poppier. It's radio friendly. Every song on the black album is formulaic...... one riff, hardly any time changes, and over-produced by a pop producer...... songs like the 4 horsemen, for whom the bell tolls, and disposable heroes are all indicative of their album's complexity in song writing, not seen anywhere on the black album.
@@alexanderkudryavcev1226 nothing wrong with that per se, but for a band that showed such aggressive complexity in their songs, the black album is..... well..... boring. It would be great for any other band.... just not metallica.
James's voice in the two final lines is beyond epic, monstrous, badass, otherworldly, or whatever brutal and encompassing word you wanna fit in.
Heaviest song on the album, and great lyrics. “I’m your reasoned alibis”. Brad you should check out unforgiven, I think it’s right up your alley. Lyrics is a must.
"Of Wolf and Man", "Through the Never" and "Don't Tread on Me" are all heavier.
Wtf, 10 of the 12 songs are all heavier. How could you even say something like that? 😂😂
@@chopps75 we might have different interpretations of heavy. Some take heavier to me harder and faster, I think heavy is a broader term. Opeth is a good example, Black Sabbath as well. But you can say Death is heavy too, chuck was a genius.
The God That Failed is havier.
@@joshuamasserant8215 on the album? The black album has 12 songs in it. Reread what I wrote and take a breath.
Black Sabbath was the band that proved that "heavy" came w/ slower drums, plodding bass, and a slamming riff🤘🤘
Metallica used that philosophy to create 'Sad but true'...
Lot of the "old" Metallica crowd had some very valid complaints about the Black Album, but anyone who cant admit this track is a god damn banger is straight up lying.
I saw that more with Load personally.
Yes!!
Agree. This song and don't tread on me are the 2 redeeming songs on the album.
@@platinumspider7859 Load is where they just jumped the shark completely, but the black album lost them a lot of the people who came on board during ride the lightning and puppets.
well The Unforgiven is great song too
Brad totally nailed this one! It's about the dark side that everyone struggles against, to some extent. For some, it's a daily battle to keep that dark half from initiating complete self destruction.
Brad nailed it on the meaning, I think. It's about the dark side of human nature, the aggression and meanness inside of all of us. We like to think we'd be better off without it, but without it we'd be too weak to survive. So we need our dark side to move us forward thru life. Sad, but true. \m/
You guys should react to…
Metallica - My Friend of Misery
🎸🤘
Totally agree….killer song 🔥
Sleeper for sure.
I watched about four hours of y'all's videos the other night...largely because it's mostly the music of MY life you're exploring....and I have to say
I loved every minute...I'm not sure how you two got together but dude, you hold onto that little woman with all your strength...I'm knocked out by just how happy and excited Lex is to hear all this Rock...without breaking down all the racial crap in this country, I gotta say , she's much cooler than most of the white girls this stuff was obstensively mostly made for, and it's great to see this crossover happening all over RUclips.
Your average chick just don't DO heavy guitar, but Lex GETS IT, and that warms my heart on a bunch of levels. She's just a shining little jewel.
But Anyway--You two should definitely listen to some UFO---their Greatest Hits should cover most of what's good, but my studio favorites are "Pack it up and Go", "Too Hot to Handle" and "Lights out in London". Michaell Schenker was the best guitar player of the mid-70's and Phil Mogg is a VERY underrated vocalist. I think you'll both appreciate them.
What he said ^ :)
James Hetfield: “Do you like your music heavy? Metallica gives you heavy babaaaayyyyyyyy!!!!!”
Lex: “That’s pretty heavy!”
@@CoboProdz yeah. For real men, it's a legendary song
Metallica ... Best metal Band ever. BiG " HELLLLOOO" you 2, from Corsica island (France). I'm watching your vids very often ans i Like It A lot. Your reactions make me laugh so hard sometime. You are made to listen to electric guitare solos !!! Keep on Rockin'
I enjoy them also! Have a great day! S.C., USA
I like this song because it has a feel of being a helpful friend but in a toxic way. But as the song goes on there is a realization that this friend is just ourselves. That this friend is this fake image of ourselves that we either project to others or use to lie to ourselves. Deep song.
Brad nailed it. Pretty good, catching the drift of this song.
Give the official video a look. The energy level is fantastic!
Hands down One of the simplest but best guitar riffs ever made.
Riff is so simple even I know how to play it and I suck! Lol
@@joepaskowski9091if only you wrote it first and made millions of dollars!
First time I've seen Brad smile. He smiles at the moment of understanding....EVERYTHING!
Of Wolf and Man
This is about religion. James grew up in a very religious household, and this is his take on how religion twists you. See Dyer’s Eve for his thoughts on how he was raised.
Also, hands down my favorite Metallica song to play.
And you guys are hands down my favorite reaction channel now. Just discovered you two days ago, and have watched no less than 30 videos since. I love the energy!
Christian Sciences
I was raised in the Jehovah's Witness cult. I feel his pain.
Nah, It's about the ego.
This song is about drug and alcohol addiction. It was inspired by the movie Magic starring Anthony Hopkins.
This makes me so happy. Love all your Metallica reactions. Especially you Lex, you are a true metalhead at this point! Been a Metallica fan for over twenty years and I never get sick of seeing new people discovering the worlds Greatest Metal band. You guys should do a reaction to some of their recent live videos from 2021, now that they are back touring after the lockdowns, they are on fire right now!
Apparently the song is based off an Anthony Hopkins movie in the 70s called MAGIC about a ventriloquist who loses himself in the alter ego of his doll....and drives him to commit murder
Bill McClintock just made a mashup of this with Leo Sayer, which is quite amusing. You might enjoy some of his metal/Motown splices, e.g. The Temptations with Black Sabbath or Danzig. They make one think about genre divisions in a new light.
👍 Guy gets too little love for his mash ups. Get ready for the grave is probably my favourite of his motown mashups with metal.
Bill is a musical genius. Love his stuff!
Bill McClintock is amazing. I hope they react to some of his stuff, because It's mindblowing.
Always love his Slayer mixes.
@@Flesharrower His Wham/Slayer mixes are the absolute best!
Jaymz is a SUPER perfectionist, and his perfectionism almost did the band in.
That's the most creative spelling of "James" I've ever seen lol
@@matilda4833 that's how James sometimes spells it when he signs things.
Nothing like revisiting an old favorite by watching favorite reactors enjoy it for their first time! FUN reaction!!!
That smile when "I'm you" was satisfying. Keep Rockin'!
I don’t get it. I’m you?
@@CoboProdz the person he's talking about in the song is him, that's the reveal
I love that the elements of groove and
funk can make metal sound even heavier.
Yes, this is one of my favourite Metallica song. Probably, the most favourite on the so-called "Black album" (1991).
I really like your reactions. The insight you both have about what you are listening to is great to watch, and really inspiring for a poet like me. Keep doing what you're doing, and I'll keep watching!
Right on the mark Brad.. this was very enjoyable. 🤘🤘
One of the deeper songs ever, for how simple the lyrics are. It really gets across the point of what its like to suffer in addiction. From personal experience it hits the nail on the head.
First time I ever heard (of) Metallic was in 1992 at the "Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert" ... damn! They blew me away! Never heard anything like them before! Wow! I am not a Metallica-Fan, but the record/album "... and justice for all!" is in my "top10 best-records of all time"-list! :-) Anyway... "sad, but true" is a banger - love this song! :-) ♥
I was raised on Metallica Black Album. Enter Sandman was literally my lullaby when I was kid. To this day I can't not be instantly in the groove when I hear any song from that album. Such a good album. I recommend giving the whole thing a listen.
Nice. I was raised with AJFA so I got lit up by ONE early. Then I discovered Sad but True when I was around 11. Shit hit me like a train. Haha. Since then Im a sucker for HEAVY
One of their best songs.
Time to go back to Load and Reload albums. Do "Bleeding Me" "Fixxxer" "Outlaw Torn"
I was like Brad, at first I was it was about drugs then I thought it was about human nature. Thats what is so cool about Mettalica. Their songs are so deep. Thank u guys for liking my last comment. Good to know u guys read our stuff
The whole black album is fire ! My favourite song is don't tread on me !
I don't know if you guys have reacted to "Don't tread on me". A young woman played this on her phone as she was being confronted by a cougar ( mountain lion ) and the big cat backed off. Cool story. I think it was in Whistler British Columbia.
That whole album is pretty kickass !
@The Dude why are you here then? So dramatic
I’m so hooked on you two listening to music you may never heard of, yet lovein it.
You both gotta do ride the lightning off ride the lightning album lex will love it and the guiter sound especially the solo, personally got my favourite ever segment in a song ever from 2.28 to 4.34
I been waiting for Ride the lightning for a looooong time now , Also Fight fire with fire
Always love listening along with y'all! I hear Mt favorite songs through fresh ears.
They don't change time signatures or tempos in this song, it's all in 4/4 but the drum fill in the chorus goes in basic triplets. Almost every single metal song includes some kind of triplets somewhere in the song (especially on drum fills like 6:15 on this same video) but this slower triplet on the chorus for some reason confused even Lars himself and they began playing that part differently live with removing the triplets and changing the 4/4 bar to 5/4 bar at the end of the chorus.
I love watching people experience this and these songs for the first time, makes me appreciate it so much more
I love watching you two. It doesn’t get old. Real.
3:27 It's called triplets; a rhythmic device where you squeeze three notes into the time of two. It's not exactly changing time signatures, but it feels like it, temporarily. Definitely imparts a groovy swing.
I was impressed that Lex picked up on it, tbh! She's a natural!
@@matilda4833 someone needs to buy that woman a guitar. 🎸
"Look at the big brain on Brad !" - Sam L. WATCHIN YOU GROW BRADLEY.... NICE COLORS LEX. ♦

I always thought that song was your conscience, good and bad and what influence you best…great song , you guys need to do some from “hardwire to self destruct “ !!!!
Brad’s smile at the end was awesome to
See. Good stuff like always guys.
Easily one of my favorites from Metallica, which is saying a lot, cause they have so many great songs. Loved the reaction. You guys nailed the meaning behind the song too, great stuff.
The song is based on a movie called Magic starring Anthony Hopkins released in 1978.
Best "aha" moment I have seen in a while from Brad at the end of the song! Lex you are a true music fan regardless of genre, I feel like you listen to music the same way I do and I totally get where you are coming from. I truly enjoy your heavy metal reactions! Cheers from Montreal, Canada 🤘
You can tell that she is already a BIG Metallica fan and know this song inside and out.. She is just trying to get her boyfriend to love them to... I love it!
So today while on Facebook I was commenting with a GIF using the Facebook GIF selections. I've been driving myself insane for the last hour though trying to remember what I typed in to search for a specific GIF but imagine my shock when I see GIF's of both Brad and Lex. lol
YOOOOO!!! Got this notification on my way to see Metallica in Atlanta tonight!! 🤘🤘🤘💯
From a psychology perspective - I’d say it’s about the Jungian concept of your shadow - all those dark parts of inside of us that we are told to suppress so we can integrate and conform to society. Oh hey - Brad just said that as I was typing.
Metallica became a favorite band of mine around 1985. They were just building their legend at that time and it grew with their constant striving for musical quality and meaningful songs
When I was living in Botswana, I got a bad copy of this tape and I always thought he was singing "Seperate Shores". Even now, thoough I know the lyrics, I still sing Seperate shores in my head.
Love y’all’s channel. Brad you’re seem like a cool down to Earth guy and Lex you’re like a music empath with the way you feel the music(you may also be the cutest person alive)
That one smile cracked made the entire reaction ->🔥
Before playing this song live James always says: "do you want heavy?? Metallica gives you heavy"
I used to clean my car while listening to this back in the 90s. What a song.
I’ve alway thought the lyrics were “I’m your truth telling lies, I’m your reason, I’ll advise” but they’re actually “I’m your reasoned alibis”
Imagine that. A new fan who has recently intently listened to all kinds of music, including heavy metal, points to a song off the Black Album as being heavy. There were some of us who were into Metallica from the beginning who had more sense than to diss the Black Album.
You are the only ones who really focus on the songs and try to feel them, try to understand them . That's why I like your videos.
That smile…Brad figured that shit out toward the end!
Always interpreted this one as your conscience being against you and your mind being your mown worst enemy.
My daily shout out for Roads or Glory Box by Portishead live from Roseland NYC ✌️
I loved Metallica growing up obviously, played guitar but I never dug into the lyrics as a guitarist but James is a great lyricist. He's like the Johnny Cash of Metal. It's too bad we never got a Cash/Hetfield album.
When I was a Soldier, I went to war with these tunes.
Me too
When I saw Metallica in Seattle in 1992, I had beer spit on me baby Kirk Hammett (guitarist) while in the front row! Keep Rock Alive!! 🤘🏽🖤🔥🙌🏼 ℁
On this track they used D Standard tuning on the guitars (all strings down a step from E Standard, the basic guitar tuning), to give it that lower, heavier sound. One of the best from that album, to me...possibly my favorite. (By contrast, they employed Drop D tuning on 'All Nightmare Long', where only the heaviest E string is dropped down to D)
Dope review and very dope metallica!! Thanks so much for post
That smile from Brad makes this reaction great ;)
''Vampire coming out of a tunnel in to a football stadium '' is perfect :)
Your right, it is Perfection! 🤟🔥🎸
That was the song that got me addicted to Metallica... "Sad But Truuueeeaa!"
Every concert, James: "Tallica gives you heavy baby".....enter Sad But True.
My favorite song of theirs! I'm Youuuuuuu. Lol love the smile when you figured it out.
Been waiting for this, I knew Brad would love this one !
Lex, there are some haters who think the band "sold out"" on this album. I laughed when you said "this is heavy even for Metallica" because I love this song, and anyone who says the record is "not heavy enough" are posers!
Metal heads who say that are just ignorant, sure this album was much more digestible to a larger audience than their previous albums but metalhead purists act like it’s such a curse to listen to music with an actual good production value and thats enjoyable to listen to. Honestly this album might be some of the best song writing they’ve ever made. You could argue it’s even their best album, objectively.
This album is amazing. I just saw the whole album live at aftershock and rocked out hard, but heavy? Not so much. The first 4 albums were a lot heavier.
No this is the album that made them trendy to people like yourself who probably didn't listen to metallica before this album.
@@sarcastic_redbeard6263 exactly..... all of a sudden it was on the radio..... this is their 5th best album. It has 2 good songs on it ( good for Metallica, not for other bands), this one and don't tread on me.... everything after this is pure garbage.
@@mikemclaughlin3306 Bullshit, I listened to all metallica albums before this one, when they came out, and I think this is a great album. Load & Reload are great albums too, just because they adopted a more "hard rock" genre doesn't mean anything, good music is independent of genre. This one is classical heavy metal with great production. St Anger is garbage though, it's not good in any genre
Hey Guys! Love your channel! Hugs from Brazil
FINNNAAALLLY!!!!!!!!😫😫😫 I was requesting and requesting!!! Hahah awesome reaction!!!!
I love to see your minds be blown away for the first time.
Your Conscious. You can lie, steal, cheat, but YOU know. You can try to justify, or alibi, but You know the Truth.

1 second of guitars, and there is already a smile on Lex's face. Love her.
Lex is right. Metallica takes their music very seriously, in a sense that they are perfectionists. They have like an organisation, their base in San Francisco, or something. It's on such a level, I can't explain. They are on Metallica level.
They were my first band I got into, over the years I got into all types of music, but till this day I listen to Metallica. They are an institution.
Not for nothing, if you guys are watching the news, war in Ukraine and stuff, one of the Ukrainian figures is calling on celebrities, but in particular he is calling Metallica to speak to Russian fans, he singled out Metallica. If any celebrety can crack propaganda there in some more impactful way, it's Metallica. Tells you how much influence that band still has.
Metallica is just incredible on so many levels.
I've listened to Sad But True any number of times, know it word for word (while its playing anyway), and never once bothered trying to wonder what it means.
And I'm not about to start.
It sounds heavier because the guitars are tuned to "Drop-D". (Tuning the bass strings of the guitars down two semi-tones to 'D' instead of 'E') That's why modern metal bands sound heavier. Apart from better production they often tune down to C. System of a down for example.
I feel like I remember this video having images/video of the Persian gulf war back in the day. Edited to say Kirk can really make the guitar talk and tell a story
I love you guys. Watching the metallica reaction are my favorite yall are awesome
I love watching your reaction's Lex, your amazing. 😍😍😍
The song was inspired by the movie Magic starring Anthony Hopkins about an evil ventriloquist dummy. The song itself is about drug and alcohol addiction.
Sad but true
Brad, check out Virginia Tech football team coming out t Metallica's Enter Sandman. The energy is so freaking high. "Sad But True" is his ego or an inner voice talking.
Speaking of it being like an entrance song, Undertaker used a version of it (that was unfortunately sung over by Kid Rock called American Badass) back in 2000.
One of my favorite Metallica songs! It’s classic.
Brad: "I imagine like a football team coming out to this"
Fun fact: the undertaker used kid rocks American badass as entrance music which is this song with different lyrics
I've always taken this song as being about personal responsibility... As in, ultimately, you made your own choices, you are the one who responded negatively to the external stimuli. You can say someone or something made you do it, you can make excuses, but in the end you made that choice and could have made a different one.
Y’all are doing all this live stuff today might be time for queensryche live in 1984 Japan “take hold of the flame” gotta see it live!
