Actually in chapter 27 of the book it tells about how 5 men on defending a hill are blown up by an explosion. It tells about it in the song. "Men of 5 still alive through the raging glow" is the line that describes it.
Hemingway wrote the book with the battle of Segovia in his mind. Ofensiva de la granja, 30 may / 4 june 1937. My grandfather fought there, in La Granja de San Ildefonso. At 18 years old. He lost his brother in the war, soldier too. They knew perfectly why they were fighting. I love this song but the part "for a hill men would kill, why they do not know. Stiffened wounds test their prides", was totally wrong. In that war everyone knew what they were fighting for.
It is based on the book : "For Whom The Bell Tolls" - Earnest Hemingway There is a Version on Audible (elsewhere I'm sure), narrated by Campbell Scott.... Better than most movies !! About an American helping the rebels in the Spanish Civil War.

That bass solo in the intro is legendary! Cliff Burton was an absolute boss. Hearing this when I was like 7 or 8, was like yes I've found my band! As a life long Metallica fan I love seeing people get into it for the first time. You two rock! \m/

I am watching Brad & Lex for the first time. I am a middle-aged guy from the midwest who grew up listening to SO many of the songs they are reviewing. I LOVE that they want to listen to such a huge variety of songs from so many eras. I LOVE that they keep an open mind going into each song (or so it seems). The song selection is great, but I'm biased due to my musical preferences and how they allign with the songs they review. I am beyond impressed and captivated by the personalities and reactions. This is one of Metallica’s Masterpieces of Music. Their ability to tell a story with not just the lyrics but their instruments still astounds me and no band can match their ability.

I've BEEN waiting for you guys to get on this one! The intro riff was played on a bass guitar with the use of a wah pedal - the term "lead bass" was attributed to Cliff Burton, Metallica's bassist at the time who passed away after the release of the Master of Puppets album. God rest his soul... When I discovered this fact it inspired me to pick up the bass myself. (: And I 100% understand why the "beat" of Bells appeals so much to Brad. If you really wanna turn your man into a Metallica lover, Lex, I recommend doing a reaction to Sad But True - I really think Brad would be able to appreciate that one. Lars hapened to find a small anvil in the recording area and the bell sound you hear in the song is actually Lars hitting an anvil....

Same! A Metallica concert was being promoted on whatever radio station I was listening to back in the 80s and they used a snippet of the chorus from this song and I was instantly like, “WHAT?” They soon became my favorite band of all time. And then the black album came out.
