      Earning the archenemy slot is an achievement a deck earns, especially when it's not that strong. If you're playing Narset/Godo you're openly declaring archenemy and should expect and enjoy it. If you're the archenemy because you're just playing gold that day, that should be fun. I love my Ramses deck because it creates insane archenemy situations like the entire board defending an Edgar deck with 90 life and Exquisite Blood in play because I win the game by hitting him just once, and that feels great.

    My God, the no drinks at the table rule is so essential. My friend had a powered cube, real power, not proxy, and decided it would be fun to teach his girlfriend's little brother how to play... Kid spilled a whole glass of water all over the table. The lil bro of course had no idea how expensive the cards were, and barely reacted. Everyone else dove to pick up the cards as fast as possible. Somehow, Miraculously, nothing got water damaged, and I don't even think it was double sleeved.

      Hadn’t considered that. Just started playing Magic again and I’ve been taking a Hydro Flask cup with a integrated straw. I think something like that is kosher. After reading your comment I tested it full and flipping it on its side. A few drops might come out the straw end but it’s pretty much sealed. Without knowing it I got the drink solution for the table 😅

      Honestly, I don't even have cards THAT expensive but I make sure mine are sealed inner sleeved and outer sleeved at a minimum. Whether it's because I love my cards or because maybe one day I'll end up wanting to sell them if I'm 60 and just don't need or want them, I think it's always a good investment to protect your cards as much as possible. It's also why I REALLY appreciate the players who are very gracious and ask kindly to touch your cards or pick them up to read them instead of those who just casually grab at anything to read it or whatever they're doing.

  • @ethanglaeser9239

    One of the biggest for me is that you should help other players learn the game and play better. Sure you can correct them on the rules, but also show them more optimal lines and help them understand their own cards. We aren't playing in a tournament, so while helping them out might lead them to win the game, that's not really a bad thing. This is especially true if you are in a pod with people that are less experienced than you are.

      read the room tho. Having some "sage" explain your own deck to you can be extremely annoying when you're not asking for advice. i've been teaching my nephews at home and i love helping people get into the game, but sometimes when i go to the LGS i'm expecting a smoother game than what i get at home and trust that each player knows what they're doing unless there's a reason to think otherwise.

      @@Fausto_4841 I agree. It needs to be helpful in a genuine and simple way, and not in a "I know better than you way". For example, it isn't helpful to tell someone how to take their turn, or that they should do it differently, but it is helpful to walk a confused player through the proper timing of their game actions. In other words, help people who need/want it, and leave other people alone.

    Instead of making it your goal to win in edh, if you make it your goal to meet new potential friends and learn how their decks work during play, you'll avoid so many problems that edh players face. Winning isn't even all that great unless everyone can say it was a good game. And it mostly will be if everyone is laughing and having fun.

    Consensual shortcuts are fun. Have played in groups with shortcuts as loose as letting a player look at the top of their library-- while exclaiming "cheat-a-peak"-- to see if it's a land and they can just play their hand rather than mulligan. No one has an issue with it and given the size and awkwardness of shuffling an EDH deck it can save a decent amount of time.

    One of the things i hate about the social contract is that it's basically "don't mess with green." Oh it's turn 5 and the green player has played 10+ lands, sorry you can't punish them for overextending, but that white player, they played a signet and thus that has to be removed at all cost or else people might think it's a functional color.

    I tried to have the rule zero talk with a guy who wanted a pick up game a few months ago. I told him about my deck and strategy to help him understand my power level. Then he refused to tell me anything about his deck! So I told him that’s fine but I’d find other people to play with. This isn’t a modern Grand Prix. He might play a new person once, but then the cat’s out of the bag anyway. No reason not to be transparent to have a better game for all involved.

    Hot take: Spite plays in the same game are perfectly valid. I cannot stress enough that it has to be in the same game. If commander is truly a social game then revenge is valid. It's part of the politics and the fun of the game. I don't think every move has to be the exact correct play. In my opinion that's what makes Commander so fun. If I can get away with getting some revenge in without really advancing anyone else on the board, I will always choose revenge. Lol if I'm about to pop off, I prepare myself to take an ass whooping lol

    I have had being mindful of others time backfire hard but I still try to do it. I Enlightened Tutored after combat on the turn before mine and announced I was doing this EOT but starting now to save time but if someone was effecting the topdeck I'd wait. This opponent pauses and stops playing, so I again explained to him "I'm not doing this now, don't play around my tutor". He just stares at me and waits for me to tutor and put it on top of my deck. He then plays Ashiok and targets me with the mill. I just scooped, walked away, and talked to him after awhile. He still refused to acknowledge his douchey move even after I explained my intent was to save everyone's time rather than make them wait for a search and shuffle.

      Played a game where an opponent played two super powerful decks in a row (one even had the mycosynth lattice karn lock) then switched to an upgraded precon and was huffy when I went to counter a mass reanimation spell. I should have outright countered it, but because they were angry, I let it resolve as long as they didn’t attack me. They then proceeded to win the game. The lesson is to not care at all if people don’t like your line because they’ll abuse that to win the game.

    It's weird to me how there's so many points about making sure you change the way you act to play to make people feel good and let people play the game, but then on the other hand you say "kill the combo player no matter what's on board", making sure that the combo player doesn't get to play Magic. I see this a lot and people will gang up on a deck that has a single combo, just letting some other player stomp the game while the combo player has zero fun. It runs to antithesis to the idea that we're here for casual fun and seems to contradict your "no bullying" point.

      @tonyortiz15 9 месяцев назад +2

      I thought this was an interesting concept when she came out but had the same concerns about it being unfun. What I did to power it down was play extra combats instead of extra turns. It's easier to whiff, there's less card/resource advantage, and you obviously have to make sure Narset can keep getting in. Unfortunately, you still kind of waste some time but not as much as extra turns. Thought it might help you get to play your favorite at lower power if you want.
      You can also still cEDH this too with the unfun stuff. I have like 20 cards to the side that all either protect Narset or do worse, and I can switch them in and out depending on what people want to do. I never even used to carry the higher stuff, but I have a friend who loves cEDH/10 power so I carry it for him if he wants to play that.

One additional tip I think would be helpful: be honest not just about what your deck does to win, but what the spiciest or meanest thing your deck can do is. Like, I play a Kamiz deck with cards like Needle Specter, that could potentially force a player to discard their hand. This doesn't win me the game but it's something I want to be open and honest about anyways.

    15:15 this is the exact reason why I have a "sideboard" of exactly 1 card in my Sefris deck that if other players don't want to play infinite combos, I trade out Reveillark. That one change powers down the deck significantly.

      @@Paul-ls6zv Having the ability to infinite combo and not having that ability is what drastically changes how powerful the deck is. I've been in games where I became the archenemy because I wasn't playing ANYTHING, and they didn't believe that I just had a horrible start. Those are my favorite games, especially with how little I'm actually able to get out and play any more. It's hard not getting salty sometimes.
    EDIT: Back in college (1997 or so), we had someone bring a big gulp and spill it all over everyone's cards (there were 5 or 6 players in the game, lots of OG dual lands, and no sleeves yet). It was not pretty, and the guy wound up spending a LOT of money replacing things.

    A tip I try to give is "Don't give in to vengeance". It sucks when someone steals a card off your library or kills something on your board but don't make things worse in the long run by ignoring actual threats just to blow something of theirs up. It just leads to an unfun cycle of people being spiteful and they end up not wanting to interact or play with you.

    The most frustrating thing for me is when people are being unhelpful to other players, things like being sneaky about their board state, giving incomplete or misleading answers to reasonable questions about board states, and especially trying to pull gotchas on players for play shortcuts the entire table is letting happen that don't significantly affect the game. It's terrible behaviour. This isn't a pro tour with money on the line and the highest tier of player skill where exploiting misplays is the whole game, we are playing with friends at someone's house for zero dollars. Remind the player who hasn't blocked your Ramses that you tutored a card earlier. Step back if someone doesn't play priority right in responses. Let someone who demonstrated the infinite steps just declare their number of repetitions. Anything that makes play smoother and faster, and that helps people win because they played cards better and not because you didn't show or say that one of your discards was Anger or Wonder, is better for the game.
    Pubstomping is the worst example of this, and it's so obnoxious it's half of the reasons I only play in social groups now. There is no skill in saying 'it's not THAT Urza deck' and then Urza Wintering turn 3 because nobody killed him. I am content to usually lose because I play decks that are doing things the hard way because that's my choice, but if you lie about playing jank so I get my Grandeur deck out then run a six thousand dollar Godo deck, you're wasting everyone's time. Players whinging that otherwise they get made the archenemy as an excuse when they DESERVE to be the archenemy are pathetic, when being made the archenemy is entirely fair. You made a strong deck, you should be proud of it and declare it openly. I'm excited to pull out my spiciest deck and I'll tell the table to give them all a chance to get out their best.

    Re: Poison. The problem is that it operates on an axis that players cannot interact with. You can lifelink against a burn or aggro deck. You can use targeted removal against combo pieces. You cannot remove poison counters once you get them and proliferate spells can only be interacted with on the stack--so if you're not in blue, you have no recourse. That means player removal is often your only recourse to dealing with it. People who play poison need to understand THAT, that it's not hate being thrown their way so much as they've chosen to play a deck that has a very limited means of interaction. Players don't like to lose so they're going to take the only way to interact possible to them---that means removing you from the game.

    • @seththeace6217
      @seththeace6217 9 месяцев назад +1

      The rest of the table can probably cast more than 50 spells total. Counterspells are 1 for 1 and baral player needs it in their hand when another player casts a spell, and the baral player may also need the correct counterspells, depending on spell restrictions.
      Basically, baral needs to be drawing an insane amount of cards to keep up, or choose some things that just get to resolve.
      Counterspells aren't good.
      Keep casting and their hand will run out of action.
