I bought a 13,000 card collection of mostly bulk. I took out all the worst and most convoluted cards and built a deck out of them and play it unsleeved. I keep the commander in plastic wrap with “my commander” written on it. It’s hilariously to play because everyone has to read every card I play because no one has ever seen them before.

A deck of all foil cards is also a way to stand out. You'll be the only one with a deck that doesn't lay flat on the table. Bonus points if you get a Pringles sponsorship.

Just on the first point of budget, a friend in my pod is known for playing high power commanders with just jank in 99s. Their xenagos deck has the most unheard-of two and three beaters.
The first time they played this deck most of their turn just the rest of the table going "a who now?" and they still kick everyones butt with xenagos and without.

I am a relatively new player. My first and favorite deck is still malcolm keen eyed Navigator. I realize now he is a cedh commander and just tutors for an infinite combo on turn 3. But I was unaware of that when I started. I just made a pirate voltron deck with kediss as his little Lizard partner who sits on his shoulder!

As someone who interestingly enough has a full blown Malcolm smasher cEDH deck, this still resonates bc I started a decade ago when I couldn’t even afford decent nonbasics so my only deck was mono green elfball (forests and elves)
It slowly became optimized over the years and tho it can now present really quick wins (usually T5 lethal table and sometimes infinite), it still has a ton of nostalgia for me.

This is one of my favorite topics. As I’ve built more decks over the years, making them stand out has become my main focus.
My most recent deck that turns heads at the table has been my Death Korps of Krieg deck. When they printed a 1/1 soldier art of a Kriegmen from Warhammer in those precons I knew I needed to make a deck around them. The main thing is every card in the deck needs to create a 1/1 soldier. My favorite thing is slamming down my stack of 50 tokens of the same art on the table. Some stupid cards in the deck has led to amazing moments

A simple way to make your deck more interesting is to put time into your basic lands. Look for interesting styles and artwork, then make sure they're all different. It turns your play field into an art exhibit, and it's a unique and interesting feeling to fetch for a basic land and actually care about which basic island you're getting, just for aesthetics. Once I started doing this, I couldn't go back to not caring about basics anymore.

      @derrickpaulson3093 10 месяцев назад

Is it for you personally? Because I’ll be honest, I don’t really look at my opponent’s basic lands. Also, having them all different art is sometimes bad when it gives your opponent unnecessary information.

@@derrickpaulson3093 It's for me. If anyone else were to notice, that'd be fine, but I enjoy it. As far as unnecessary information goes, 99.9% of the time I don't believe it'll matter. I'd rather enjoy my artwork than care about that, but that's just my preference.

When I built Urtet as my first 5-color commander, I don't have big mana base things. I grabbed what two-color lands I had, and a lot of them were gates. Then I learned about Maze's End.
And then I went off the rails. The obvious win is make all Myr buff. But the fun win is make a ton of Myr and go for Strixhaven Statium or that Maze's End madness. Makes sure games don't become super grindy on-board if they drag out too, which is a win for all.

Themes also REALLY help with budget manabases. Artifact lands can replace some duals for artifact decks, legendary lands and their payoffs from lotr for legendary themes, creature type lands, all go to replacing shocks and fetches for me.

One of the things that i like to do is play background commanders. But in order to make them stand out i pick combinations that are not that popular and my decks are all budget decks. Every game that i play with one of my background decks is a blast, so much that i went 6 months without winning while still having a blast playing.

So I had this foreign skeletal wurm I wanted to use in a deck, but there was never really a good place for it. Once I saw the magic 2021 full art for massacre wurm I knew that I wanted to make a wurm tribal deck. So I made Baron and Halana’s wurm reservation. As much as I could, I made the non-wurm spells go with the theme of wurms or caretaking for big creatures. I do not run elves, but I do run Humble Naturalist (an employee at the reservation, of course). No murder, but Feed the Serpent, while not vorthos accurate, is really how you’d expect an instant kill from a large serpentine creature to go.
Creating a deck off of this little fanfic style premise was really fun, and the deck actually works surprisingly well. When all the cards in your deck are hand-picked to do what you wanted to get out of the deck, even if it’s not winning, then it still feels like a victory when you’re playing the deck, whether you actually win or lose because you got to tell that story, or do the thing that you set out to do.

I do this a lot. My Eldrazi deck doesn't have any non-eldrazi creatures, outside of Morophon the commander, which doesn't really count because he's still a shapeshifter. This helps balance the deck because Eldrazi are very strong, but the restriction tones down the power level.

Most Yarok decks I see are almost exclusively landfall decks. I built mine creature based. The elf that is a harrow on a stick, wood elves, the strix that draws a card, but the real combo to win was dead eye navigator flickering god eternal rhonas, to double everythings power 10+ times to swing for millions of damage with a small handful of creatures. That deck was fun. Took it apart ages ago.

That's how I built my GW enchantress deck that wins through overwhelming numbers of tokens, without running any token doublers, my GW Elf/Angel dual tribal deck, and my newest deck that I never could figure out how to make work for 5 years, but I just found a video making the idea work

Kenrith deck based around helping others and keeping yourself safe so the win con is "Happily Ever After". It's a deck I use and it's always been fun to play with and play against, and the first time it happens to win people don't expect it.
Another idea is to make the theme make sense. Use a single set or block. Don't use Jeska's Will in a dragon deck just because it's good. Craterhoof behemoth doesn't fit in the deck around bears just because it's green. And dockside extortionist shouldn't be in the prismari deck.

My favorite thing to do is pick a commander that isnt super popular and make a deck that does what they want to do. Then judge the power level after its made and see how it does.
Companions, backgrounds, and partners are also fun to mess around with in making these kinds of decks and abnormal colorpies.
Wilson/Shadow Theives is such a fun mini game deck, where i just make my opponents fight to be the lowest life to avoid the next bear swing.

Commander is a wall, creatures are walls or defenders, Rolling Stones, Fortified Area, Animate Wall, some walls can make themselves attack, cards that deal damage with toughness instead of power, countermagic and some bounce to be a spell wall, ghostly prison and propaganda so I have a pillow wall. It makes people smile when I play it as soon as they see my commander is a wall. I could build a better version with a different commander (like the dragon who lets creatures hit with toughness) but where's the fun in that?

Agreed upon budgets is kind of... awkward. Especially for people with older collections, where even mediocre cards will be worth more just because of age.
That and I don't want to constantly price check my deck to make sure that it's allowed - Cavalier of Dawn recently quintupled in price, would I then be obligated to take it out, even though I put it in when it was under $3?
If you want to stand out, do something really, really, stupid. Like have Haakon as your commander - It always elicits questions
With the handicap of mono-black knights without an easy way to get the commander, you get a reasonable excuse to run those tutors just for the an extra chance at that netherborn alter or command beacon

    Re: Restrictions
I built an Athreos, Shroud-Veiled deck but the list is entirely themed around the concept of "Life and Undeath in the Lands Between," ie an Elden Ring deck. Unironically some of the most fun I've had building a deck and it does some silly stuff sometimes, like constantly recurring a Clone Shell. Themed decks are very much some of the most fun you can have building a commander deck
And, re Stick To Your Theme, last year I found the Prima strategy guide for Magic Online and it has this to say if you're building a Zombie deck: "Don't clutter a zombie deck with creature elimination when you can add more zombies."
final edit: Similar to the Door to Nothingness deck, I'm currently working on a Hidetsugu Tribal deck where the primary goal is to wipe out everyone with Hidetsugu's Second Rite, through a convoluted process of proc'ing Torgaar's etb, followed by tapping Hidetsugu himself, and ending with one of numerous ways to triplecast Second Rite. I just wish Hidetsugu and Kairi was grixis so it could've been the commander instead of like, Be'Lakor.

The show has leveled up considerably with the new host pairing. The background tension is gone, and the two hosts work so well off of one another. I love and miss Cherries, but this is a better show now. That’s as much a credit to him as it is to you all for recognizing it and shaking things up. Great stuff…

The thing is, building a budget deck unless you've been playing for a very long time and have a huge collection of cards also isn't really that easy for a low cost like $20-30. I live in Europe so the main place for me to buy cards is Card Market. Even trying to build a budget deck with really low cost cards can become expensive when factoring in individual shipping costs. This is even more elevated to be honest when trying to build cool budget strategies because often you're trying to find cheaper cards that are pretty unpopular so not a lot of people have them for sale and to buy these few cards you need then need to add another £2-3 postage for those and shipping. I've also tried using popular shops websites for deck building and buying budget cards to try and minimise shipments but even then the biggest retailers over here still only tend to have 20-30% of the cards I need and each individual shop then still incurs a £4-5 shipping fee per shop and then we're back to spending an extra £20+ just to get the cards shipped. I totalled up a budget liesa deck just yesterday on cardmarket where the total value of all the cards individually was £23 however it would cost me £54 to have them all delivered, using multiple options such as lowest cost and lowest amount of shipments didn't really change that much.

In our budget commander pods at my LGS we just proxy most of our cards we can't easily find online or already have. The cards aren't worth anything anyway (around 5-50 ct each card), so why worry? It's not like you're trying to win a tournament with them. I recommend checking in with your friends/playgroup if they are okay with proxies if you don't want to spend 50 pounds on a budget deck. Makes it easier to test out your decks, too.

    • @iamacharliest
      @iamacharliest 10 месяцев назад

@@MenardiChan That's a good point. I'm not a fan of people proxying expensive cards for the sake of it but proxying cheap cards for convenience seems like a good option
