Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. This 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport is one of them. The 2020 Atlas Cross Sport is a slightly shortened 5-passenger version of Volkswagen’s midsize Atlas SUV. In this review we examine the 2020 Mustang’s positives and negatives as a family SUV.
Here’s our test car’s information explosion:
Information Explosion

Do you feel nostalgic about VWs like Evie does for her old Beetle?
It makes sense to be nostalgic for the old Beetle for it was more that the brand itself but....VW? Errr....not sure unless you are longing for that mini van which was the only quintessentially VW.
But hey! Why don’t Evie consider an EV? 😉
I was a big fan of VW. They use to have great line up of vehicles. I still own a VW, but I can't see myself ever getting a new one especially with the upcoming Golf which they ruined! My emotion for the Atlas and Crosssport is revolt. I have driven the Atlas and I didn't like it. Styling is not for me, is big bulky and ugly. Not the worst but expect better from VW.
I’ve owned a Rabbit Diesel, a Vanagon, and much later a 2012 Jetta. Although they were never fast, the older VW’s had way more character than the latest models. I wonder about the GTI though, I’ve yet to drive one.
@@RobbieHerrera I have a MK7 GTI. I think it drives and handles well. I had some issues when I first got it but so far it's been good. I still miss my MK6 Golf TDI though.
Yes, for my 04 GTI I put 141k mi on in 15 years. But I just want a Golf R Wagon or an Arteon wagon (each with 3 pedals).
51k is a whole lot of cash for a 2 row SUV with so much hard plastic.
Especially when you consider how costly VWs are to maintain once the warranty is up.
Right and you see how generic everything looks..... it’s blasphemous
Why am I watching this at 1 am? I'm literally 17.
im watching at 3am and im 15
Everyone go to bed!
I miss the Touareg although I realize they didn’t sell well. They were just so much nicer!
Especially missing the V10 TDI 😢
Jake Kennedy the new ones are crazy fancy
Europe still gets the Touareg. And I've seen it in European car reviews. It's so much nicer than the Atlas Sportcross
Cross Sport
They were and they were so much more German. This is too American bland.
Micah, I love watching you and your family! You make car shopping fun! Thank you for all the information as well as the laughter! BTW! I've been using the "Flowbee" for years, since 1986, when it was first introduced ! LOL! Think of the money I've saved?! Perfect haircut every time! Thanks again for all the info! Love, Light and Respect to you and your's! Be Safe!
Base price: 31
Price tested: 51 holy SHIT
...there are 5 trims separating the two vehicles. It is also dependant on engine selection and if you want 4 motion. I've learned not to buy base models and a se v6w/tech 4mo is a happy medium. From the outside, it is tough to tell the se apart from the sel premium (similar on the inside)
your reviews are so entertaining and fun and so incredibly well done. i really look forward to them!
Ohhhh myyyy wooordddddd, that '99 picture. Love it! Good work on the video, y'all, always fun to hear the commentary.
Love the family reviews and your family. Makes it easier to visualize how it might actually be used.
I like these family reviews. Micah is the car guru, and Evie just gives her honest opinion which I enjoy hearing as she’s not probably a car nut. Great review and keep them coming!
I randomly ended up on this video and oh boy did I have a good time! Have a few good chuckles, you guys are adorable. Subscribed!
I love your videos and your family. Love to see you all together.
I remember 1998, when Volkswagen blew up as a premium carmaker with the New Beetle. 1999 rolled out the New Passat, New Jetta, and New Golf. I remember the colors and the premium styling of my aunt’s Passat being distinctly superior to that of my parents’ 1996 Accord. By the time I graduated high school, the Touareg was released. Volkswagen became an aspirational brand for me in my younger years. It wasn’t a brand that was as flashy as BMW or Lexus, but it was a brand that made you feel different, in a superior way. 20 years after that launch, we are with the Atlas and Arteon, products that Volkswagen released to right its wrongs made circa Dieselgate. I’m not sure if the Atlas is nostalgic to me. It seems to be obviously inferior to the Touareg and other premium 2000s Volkswagens we miss so much. If Volkswagen wants to evoke nostalgia of the brand, name the Arteon the Passat. Name the Atlas the Touareg Sport. Let the Jetta and Tiguan be the mainstream car that the masses can afford. But give us the rest of the aspirational luxury we miss in the cars mentioned.
These reviews are always so much fun, and your daughter is developing killer comic timing!
Love this! Beautiful family viewpoint, u guys make a great team:) Also love the enormous bin too for storage😊 I love the exterior too more. Thx for another great video! Love the sun roofs, I wonder if u feel sum thru that tint?
“Does it feel unjarring?” *English.exe not found for remaining commentary* 😂😂 great review again man!
Love you guys!
I LOVE the styling, although the interior isn’t great, the exterior is all i think people care about lol
Awesome video as always Micah! You guys had me crying laughing! By the way, you said Sport Cross after the info!😸😸😻😻😸😸
I spent Friday morning in a VW showroom fawning over an Atlas 3.6 Exec-line. It’s huge, and the VW paint jobs are always spectacular. I was ready to trade in my Golf R, which was getting an oil change nearby. Then I read all the comparison reviews..... it looks like the KIA Telluride is the new victor.
I love it, I'm a Touareg owner and not happy that the new touareg isn't coming to the states. This could possibly fill that void for me.
Looks great in that color in my opinion.
...the t'egg hasn't been with us since 2016...
Like the idea for sure.....engine choices are unremarkable...you three are a very watchable trio!!
Remark: love the family reviews. Being a family man it makes it easier to visualize the family in the vehicles
VW kind of reminds me of Acura in that I'm perpetually cheering them on, hoping they'll get it right. But then there's always 2 or 3 deal breakers. Here it's fuel economy, and lack of refinement in the interior and powertrain for the price.
Unlike the VW Atlas, y'all are the best! Thanks for the content and be well!
Ohhh. Your family review makes me happy.
Starting to really enjoy this even more than kbb stuff.
VW did the exact same thing with this that Honda did with the Passport. They cut the length of the regular Atlas/Pilot but kept its wheelbase. So they both have more interior space than the competition.
Like ur video.. Are u guys from southern California around L.B. City?
Great video! I feel like it should get more than 16mpg in the city, this is not even a full size suv! Once again, loved the review 👍
Does the middle armrest ratchet up like other VWs?
I don't remember you focusing on the digital cockpit...
I just picked up one of these up from enterprise, me and the wife both fell in love. We’re considering getting one ourselves.
Really great video, and very informative review. Also love the light hearted family approach. I agree with everything you said on the review but one thing that I found that was a dealbreaker was the roof line is way too low when getting into the car, the seat must be put all the way down in order for a 5 foot 10 person to get in without hitting his head and to make things worse Volkswagen did not give the seats easy in easy out activation meaning they do not lower automatically when you turn the car off. Also found that the transmission was jerky as if it was always trying to find what gear and needed to be in.
Micah, just looking for a 2-row that will fit a great dane in the back seat. Our Cx-5 can do it, but it's tight. CrossSport or Grand Cherokee (limited or below)?
I'd probably go CrossSport. That Grand Cherokee is getting awfully old.
@@MicahMuzio 👍 cross sport se v6 w/tech (and pano roof) puts us in GC territory that has less standard features)...
First time reading the description....why is 2020 mustang listed
Hate all that plastic, the fake stitching and that red(ish) color.
Your review: priceless.
Would you recommend this for a family the gray looks awesome and I want one but does it justify the 50,000 price tag
...looking at it too. Love the space behind rear seats (don't need 3 rows). Haul one kid, a great Dane and stuff. SE w/tech is a happy medium. Engine choice and fwd/4mo determine how high you end up...I'm looking at 44k before negotiations....
I hear and agree with all the criticism. And yet I can't stop thinking about getting one. 🤔
It’s the exterior. It’s handsomely rugged but sheesh at this price might as well commit to luxury
i am SO here for the voice command system’s character arc.
Really love this vehicle, wish I had one to cruise in
Step back when you try the kick to open the back lift. Why no mention on the differences of eco vs normal vs sport or custom? Sport mode changes the timing of your shift points and tightens up the steering top.
You did sport cross ones
Please fly over echo park/Belmont area
Like it!!
Outside looks a bit like Audi Q8 or Urus. I love it
Hey I have a Crosssport se r line !! it rocks dude !!! and it didn't cost 52gs.....
only the milages is sooooo bad in city 14 mpg i can't put higher the number and VW promise 18 but where? and i sit alone the car
Overall, I like it. It looks like decent transportation and reasonably stylish. The VR6 is a very interesting engine. The chassis is pretty similar in size to GM's Acadia/Traverse/etc and FCA's Durango/Grand Cherokee but interior room is better than the competitors despite very similar exterior size. I wish it had 30-50 hp more and would be jump to buy one if the engine were longitudina and the drive train RWD-based instead of FWD. Or if had a 5-10 inch shorter wheel base and maybe even a 2-door model... as it is, it's on the short list but I'm not chomping at the bit to own one.
16 mpg???
Arguing with the voice tech! Hahahahaha
We are a VW family. We have owned 2 Passats, 2 GTIs and a CC. My daughter drives a Beetle. But I think VW has lost it's way, at least in the US. A fully loaded Cross Sport costs just $2,000 than a comparably specced BMW X3.
If you were leasing, the BMW would cost way less per month.
I don’t know how you deal with that
Looks good but rear windows would need to be programmed to stop with 1/4 still to go down as I think its illegal here in Australia for them to go all the way down
Interesting. What’s the logic in that window rule?
@@MicahMuzio I'm pretty sure from kids falling out the windows back in the day especially how they can use the armrest for a step i think it started to come into effect late 70s early 80s from memory, possibly stop drunk people hanging out like loonies too
Hey, what’s wrong with Rancho Cucumonga? I don’t live there and I am just kidding.
It's so funny because nowadays one of the first things mentioned in a car review is plastic and stitching.
At this price it better be less plastic
Nice Jedediah beard
You said sport cross once at the 1:07 mark. 😂
Beautiful suv but in the expensive side
Marc’s remarks (really questions): Do the seats make you feel like the little spoon? The car can autopark can it also unpark? That would take me awhile to get out of lol..oh and the “No one” proves she’s your kid lol
Excellent remarks!
Answers:
-Not quite little spoon seats. Maybe little fork.
-Yup, it'll unpark itself. Though doing so makes me feel extra lazy.
-She's definitely my kid. Just a matter of time before we hand off the channel to her.
My first vehicle (at 16) was a '68 Beetle and I hated it. That brand still bothers me ... lol
I wanna see Tiguan Cross Sport because this Atlas is too big for me.
yeah tiguan with 2.0T would be nice
Have you noticed while your hands are both on the steering wheel, of most suv's in the last decade, your elbows don't rest, ah on the rests.
lic2kil007 oh dang I never. I never noticed!
Is your secret that you cut your hair with a Flowbee?
VW should bring back the Touareg, but I think this is the crossover American deserves
1:07, my guy made it less than a minute
Inverted...
Micah, when are you going to play the guitar and sing in one of your videos?
love it ....looks like the audi Q8....
The lower you go, the harder it gets...... Man.... Hahahaaa ...
Remarks: You said Sport Cross at 1:08
Winning remark!
As the owner of a 2019 VW Jetta GLI 35th anniversary edition and automotive mechanic for 15 years, I think VW has come leaps and bounds on reliability while keeping safety a priority. I have driven all the VW lineup as a friends works for a dealer. That being said there is a lot to be let down by, the cost for what you’re getting being the biggest, I.e. hard plastic everywhere, just an overall cheap feeling with no joy in the drive at all as the acceleration is underwhelming. Quality is left up to the big brothers like Audi and Porsche with incredibly higher price points... but worth saving until you can afford one of those??! Overall, looks nice, poor fuel economy, poor interior quality.
you and others talk a lot about cheap hard plastic ....... whats wrong with plastic ? and i think a better word is injection molds...and why does everything have to be padded? Injection molds are durable light weight easy to clean and in my opinion look good on the other hand padded surfaces tend to crack after time ...
Considering my mom just bought a new sonata with all these features and more I have to wonder how badly you must want this thing to pay 20k more and get poor gas mileage for the privilege.
16mpg? excuse me
Like most VW's..looks great until you look at little harder.
It looks like a T Roc interior
Awwwww Micha is married hes all grown up... with a kid!!!!!! Wow hes someone's dad!!!!!!!! Awwwww
like the body style reminds me of an audi
1999 wow 👍
A decade from now, vehicle manufacturers will look back at these days of making unnecessary 'fake exhaust outlets' and say, "What were we thinking?" ** If there's no exhaust pipe there, don't make a chrome surround as if there was--you're not fooling anyone!
He calls his mom sweetie?
It looks great outside, it's cheap inside, mileage hurt my wallet, No thanks, I like toyota highlander hybrid better.
@ 1:07 he calls it a sport cross
Absolutely hate the rear on these
Love the rear on this
The lower you go the harder it gets hahaha
The Atlas Cross Tour Trek Sport seems like the Passat of Crossovers, it’s a cheap spacious car that isn’t fit for global consumption.
9:15 🐿😉
51K is allot of money
Why someone would choose this over a fully loaded Edge ST is beyond me. Better tech, considerably more power, better materials, thousands of dollars cheaper. I am a VW fan but they failed.
why people are so obsessed with hard plastic? are you sleeping on it? Better complain with underpowered VR6 and it need turbo!
Who wants a Farro Salad..??? No One! 🤣🤣😭😭😭
Why does this get such god awful fuel economy? The Atlas with a V6 gets better, it makes no sense to me
Took you 1:10 to call it a sport cross lol
And somehow I didn’t notice saying it, even when editing the video. 🤷♂️
Happens to the best of us. #sportcross
Whoa, $51 GRAND?? Given VWs horrendous depreciation, a definite no. HARD PASS. Thanks for the upload Muzio's !!!!
Atlas has the worst interior in its segment unfortunately, by a long shot in the upper trims. Looks like they didn’t fix it in the cross sport. It’s super obvious the minute you sit in these.
She's cute!👍
Mostly reminds me of a Knock off Urus or Audi Q8
Considering VW owns em both uhhhhh I’d think so
All wheel drive it’s heavier ,, o got the fwd it’s better better mpg better acceleration hands down way better most ppl don’t Need and it’s just a myth
Meh! Exterior styling is pretty good. Interior styling is dull. The hard plastic, especially on the lower door panels is a joke for a vehicle at this price. There are scuff marks from someone's shoes on the driver's door, if not on all of them. It just looks ugly! Why aren't they carpeted like the manufacturer's did years ago? The 'burgundy' leather is so dull and unexciting, as is the battleship gray paint. The paint looks okay in the shade but in the sun? 🤮 Also, I hate that a 6.5" center screen is standard and the 8" is part of an expensive upgrade. WTF? Make the big screen standard on all models. VW, I feel you are out of touch with today. Hopefully your electric line with the odd naming does better. My review for Micah's video (as always): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My review for VW:⭐
Michael, thanks for weighing in! I've got to agree, 6.5" for the standard screen is lame. Hopefully competitive pressures inspire VW to step up their game.
The fake exhaust is a deal breaker. 😡
