The "American" Sized 2-Row | 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

  • VW's latest crossover looks like exactly what the doctor ordered for American shoppers. It's big, it's bold, and it's a lot less expensive than VW's last attempt at a larger 2-row SUV on our shores. The new Atlas Cross Sport is, quite literally, a 3-row Atlas with some of the rear cut off. The result is a wide and spacious cabin, the main selling point for upgrading from something like a RAV4 or CR-V. The only trouble? Oddly enough, that's still the price tag.

I see there are some other vehicles I must review. I'm a tall person and I like everything about the Cross Sport except the gas mileage, AWD 18/23. I understand with size fuel efficiency may decrease. I'm leaving an Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited.

    I would be curious about acceleration from 50 mph to 75 or 80, and for fuel economy at 70-80mph between the two. I know the turbo 4 is rated for half the towing capacity of the VR6. To me, that would be a hint that the VR6 should offer a longer lifespan.

    We looked at the Santa Fe very seriously. However, the main deal breaker was the turbo lag. We drove 2 different cars with the 2.0 turbo. Both of them acted the same way. While smoothly pressing on the "go" pedal, you hit a point where the car instantly takes off, pushing the occupants back in the seat. I've never driven a turbo car that didn't accelerate smoothly like the SF. Also, note that the Hyundai dealer marked up his cars ridiculously. $250 for nitrogen filled tires? Give me a break.

    We went with the Santa Fe SEL+ (now the SEL Convenience) AWD with the 2.4. Better expected reliability than any FCA or VW product, wider than the RAV4/CR-V compacts, relatively efficient (30 mpg from the mid Rockies to the East Coast and back over 4,500 miles), much less than a Murano or Edge, and we got a good deal of $26,300 vs MSRP of $32,800. As for power, two of us and a week worth of luggage, westbound over I70 out of Denver, rowing the gearbox, kept up with traffic at will. Standard full stop adaptive cruise is a godsend on long interstate slogs (especially in slow and go), as is standard lane keeping assist. Waiting for the Santa Fe to come with the new 2.5 NA or a hybrid of some sort so we can get an FWD Limited to replace our aging second vehicle.

    With the Cross Sport VW joins a number of other brands in offering two vehicles in the so-called "midsize" crossover category. One being a smaller crossover typically between 188" and 192" in length and a group of larger vehicles that range from 195" to 203" in length. In most cases the smaller vehicles are six to twelve inches shorter than their larger siblings. The smaller vehicles are typically two row SUV's while the larger group offers three rows of seating. An exception is the KIA Sorento that provides three rows in a vehicle that's virtually the same size as its cousin the two row Hyundai Santa Fe.
    Another exception is the is the VW Cross Sport that's less than 3" shorter than its "big" brother Atlas. VW has apparently decided that American consumers' overriding priority is BIG vehicles, at least compared to those VW offers to consumers elsewhere in the world. So while Honda chopped off 6" from the Honda Pilot in the Passport and the Chevy Blazer is a full 12" less in length than the bus-like Chevy Traverse, the 195.5" Cross Sport is actually a bit longer than the Toyota Highlander, a three row crossover. (At least according to Toyota's claim.) Simply stated the Cross Sport is a BIG two row crossover. It will be interesting to see whether it's a winner for VW.
    As far as engine choices are concerned, it's not especially surprising that Alex finds the turbo4 in the Cross Sport to be a superior choice compared to the VW's VR6 in some ways. The EA888 2 liter four cylinder is an extraordinarily flexible powerplant, available in vehicles as diverse as the Tiguan and Golf R with vastly different performance characteristics. It's a tuner's dream. The VR6 engine, on the other hand, is not a strong contender in terms of performance. Its benefits lie in smoothness and linear power delivery. But its weight and performance profile aren't impressive by current standards.

    • @johnholst
      @johnholst 4 года назад

      Stephen...Great observations my man! I agree. This thing doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe Audi can get away with charging more for the Q8 over the Q7, but I don't think VW can. I think only a hardcore VW fan will buy this. The value proposition is terrible. It's more money than the fully loaded, vastly superior Telluride.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 года назад

      @@johnholst I tend to agree, John. But I'm not a typical midsize crossover buyer. I value the "Goldilocks" size of the smaller category of midsize crossovers compared to the larger category that begins at about 195" in length. It's unclear to me whether for the Cross Sport VW went with their "bigger is better" philosophy about American consumers, found that they could save design and production costs on a two row midsize CUV by using almost all the same components and building it on the same assembly line as the larger Atlas in Tennessee, or both. Given that the Touareg is still sold in Europe I suspect that the Cross Sport, like the Atlas, will be an exclusively North American vehicle.
      It's true that the MSRP of the Cross Sport won't save you much, if any money compared to the Atlas. But that's true of the Passport vs the Pilot, as well. Bottom line is that sharing so many components in two row and three row vehicles means they're going to be priced very much the same.
      Finally, I detect a sort of sentiment about the "cool" factor in 2 row vs 3 row crossovers. Internet fan boys aren't a good sample of crossover buyers, of course, but I've been struck by the number of comments that suggest some consumers don't want three rows of seats in their SUV's. Not that they just don't prioritize a 3rd row but that they actively dislike the very idea of one. Too much of a "family" vs a swinging single vibe, I suspect. So perhaps there is a market for the Cross Sport vs, say, the Telluride.

    Well, I am surprised by your stance against the Passport Alex. What you are essentially saying here is that you would take the turbo 4 that is not either smooth or as powerful as the V6. Also, you are willing to give up the better equipped AWD system and the higher ground clearance of the passport that you might actually need in adverse weather situations and also the better handling on road passport just because it would be stiffer if taken off road which should be uncommon for most shoppers and because of the ZF transmission. This is not taking into consideration the expected reliability of both brands. Excuse me Alex, I just can’t understand why?

    Very nice video but i would argue that ghe awd “4motion” system in the atlas is just as impressive as the passports awd system, for a reason that needs no introduction; vw 4motion is THE SAME THING AS AUDI QUATTRO. If you have any interest in the history of awd systems you will know that audi quattro walked on the moon before honda knew what AWD even was.

    Hyundai Santa Fe is a no brainer here. This Atlas Cross Sport is actually longer than the all new Highlander and hardly an inch shorter than the Palisade and surprisingly costlier than Palisade too. In 2020 Santa Fe, you are actually almost the same or even better interior space, and the quality to my eyes look more stylish than Cross Sport, also surprisingly you can have extending thigh support in front seats in Santa Fe, and with all the options and features added to the maximum, a Santa Fe still would be under 41k USD, I don't know how can one recommend a Cross Sport in that scenario. Just get the top trim Highlander once you are fine with crossing the 193 inches length threshold, if not then just get a Santa Fe. End of discussion.

    I think that as shown here there is less "fake exhaust" and more "just a design element." You're getting a sort of bow-tie effect with the license plate sculpting above it. Doesn't bother me.

    I like it..closest I’ll get to owning a new Touareg again.as for the fake exhaust vents they look fine,,and most people won’t really notice them cause chances are they have them as well. Looks better then just a plain black rear bumper.kinda spruces thing’s up.🤔 and I can’t stand turbocharged engine’s. I’m so glad a N/A engine is still available especially in this present day where everything is turbo or supercharger.if it were only turbo this would be a definite deal breaker for me. It’s faster cause there’s less weight with a four popper, stop glorifying the turbo.
