    Volkswagen made advertising history in the 1960’s with the “Think Small” campaign. The Atlas three-row crossover is huge. Is the Atlas Cross Sport “just right”? It's smaller and only has two-rows but there’s enough space to park an original Beetle inside. Okay, maybe not, but there’s loads of room to pack up the family and head to the wilderness. Tom Voelk drives a 2.0T 4MOTION SE with Technology model. See how a 4-cylinder moves a big rig.

    I state that the V6 is a 3.5-liter at 3:20. Wrong! That's a typo, it's a 3.6-liter. I'd fix it but YT makes that very difficult.

    He’s so right. I bought in 2017 a Full Sized Impala. I love a big car and the ride and quietness. And quite frankly they were selling loaded models lower than Mid Sized Sedan and even the Civic was more expensive. My Point? No one in 3 years has ever sit in the back seat expect when I clean the windows. And the front passenger seat maybe 3 times someone sat in it. The 18 cubic Ft. Trunk space has all my cleaning supplies I never Ever use. except windex and paper towels. I did get the 2.5 four cyl with nearly 200HP which is very adequite and 23MPG almost all city driving. 8 traffic lights a day. And stop and go traffic most days.

    You are right Tom, the Atlas is not sold in Germany or in any other EU member state as the Atlas does not comply with the Euro6 homologation needed for distrubution in Europe. The same reason the Skoda and SEAT brands are not sold in North America because they are built only to in complience to European standarts and not FMVSS/CMVSS so they can't be distributed in the USA or Canada.

      In fact, those who pay up to $50K plus are likely to prefer not having their exhaust tips and rear ends (of their vehicles) all "sooty". I wouldn't defend the styling practice of replacing real with fake exhaust outlets but the trend of hiding actual exhaust outlets isn't a case of cost cutting; it's a response to market research.

    Love you review Tom. I've lost all confidence in VW, would not park one in my driveway if it was given to me. My Jetta had serious transmission problems, electrical issues (all light s would just turn off randomly...a little hard on the head at night). After the first four years of ownership, the car was excessively expensive. No my favourite car company. With so many other choices that will be rock solid, this one dewan't deserve to be on that list.

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 4 года назад

    If there's one thing VW has learned about American consumers it's that we like our vehicles larger (and typically less expensive) than our European counterparts. The American versions of the Passat, the Tiguan, the Jetta, and the Atlas all reflect that perspective. In fact, neither the current generation Jetta nor the Atlas is even sold in Europe. Now that VW has announced they won't be selling the base Golf in the US for the foreseeable future. the only VW's that come close to the specs of their European counterparts are the GTI, Golf R and Arteon.
    It's no surprise then that when VW decided to follow the lead of other brands in having two midsize SUV's, they opted to design a LARGE two row vehicle. Other brands have two row SUV's that range from 188" to 192" in length. (e.g. Edge, Blazer, Outback, Murano, Santa Fe, etc.) The Cross Sport is larger both in terms of length and width. In fact, it's 0.5" longer than Toyota's three row Highlander and only 1.5" shorter than a KIA Telluride. The bottom line is that like the Atlas, the Cross Sport is a BIG vehicle for its category, 7.5" longer than the Ford Edge and Hyundai Santa Fe, for example. Whether that's a plus or a minus depends on one's priorities.
    In terms of interior room, it's a definite plus. Although the Cross Sport gives up a lot compared to the Atlas in terms of cargo space partly as a result of its sportier sloping roof, (77.8 vs 96.8), the Cross Sport actually exceeds the Atlas' second row legroom by a significant amount (40.4" vs 37.6"). For 4 or 5 adults and their luggage and gear an extended road trip can be a comfortable environment.
    On the other hand, some midsize crossover buyers may prefer a more compact vehicle, especially those with small families and who use their SUV's as daily drivers in suburban/urban traffic. Our family (two adults, a teenager, and a big dog) are among that group. For us, our KIA Sorento at 189" saves about 7.5" off the length of Cross Sport and means the difference between fitting and not fitting a bike rack to the rear hitch in our garage that adds about 18" to the entire length of the vehicle. We looked seriously at the Atlas when we shopped about a year ago and found it simply too damn big. At 195.5" long, the Cross Sport still fails that test for us.
    Finally, I'd disagree somewhat with Tom's comment about needing a three row crossover only for bi-annual visits from relatives. We use the third row of our Sorento less than 10% of the time but it's very convenient to have when we chauffeur and gaggle of teenage girls or go to a local destination with another family and would otherwise have to take two vehicles. Furthermore, the third row of the Sorento is surprisingly roomy, especially considering its the vehicle's overall size. With 31.7" of legroom, it's has very slightly more space than the KIA Telluride (31.4") It sacrifices cargo space behind the third row to achieve that but for local trips it's surprisingly comfortable. All in all, the Sorento is a Goldilocks vehicle for us. A three row crossover the size of most two row competitors and a much tidier package than other 3 row SUV's.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  4 года назад

      I'll address the cargo space of your very thorough post Stephen because I failed to mention it in the piece- Yes there's less measured cargo space with a sloped roof line but I've found time and again that, in the real world, it doesn't make as much of a difference as one might think. That triangle of space just doesn't get used much. The TP trunk test has taught me that. Now if you're always brining home furniture found on the side of the road... that's another story.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 года назад

      @@DrivenCarReviews Point taken, Tom. In fact, the whole subject of cargo space is a complex one. First, I understand that SAE has recently revised its "rules" for calculating cargo space, changes that have reduced cargo space in some existing vehicles. But the "rules" are somewhat beside the point since a manufacturer doesn't have to follow them. A manufacturer is free to claim whatever figure they wish without penalty. In some cases I'm skeptical about a manufacturer's claim whatever measurement method they use. Honda maintains that the CR-V has up to 75.8 cubic ft of overall cargo space in a vehicle 182" long and the Passport offers 100.7 cubic ft in a vehicle that's 190" in total length. Each of those figures is class leading by a significant amount in vehicles whose overall size is average for its category. I'm guessing that each offers more cargo space than its competition but I'm doubtful about the specific measurements.
      Second, as far as I know, there is no accepted rule for calculating the height of cargo packed into a vehicle. Safety considerations might argue that cargo should not be stacked from the floor to the ceiling of a vehicle but only to the base of the rear window. But we know that's not a realistic limit and I doubt many if any manufacturers take it into account when they publish their specs.
      Third, the shape of a cargo compartment and the width/height of the rear opening is at least as critical as overall capacity. In response to one of my numerous rants about the absurdly tiny cargo capacity of the CX-9 given its overall size, a reader responded that he valued the length of his CX-9's overall cargo space despite its relatively small volume because he played hockey and it was the best vehicle he'd found for carrying his stick. I've never tested that claim but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'd say the same about your famous Costco TP metric and Jakub and Yuri's storage box approach. C&D at one time filled vehicles with ping pong balls though I think they've abandoned that approach these days.
      Bottom line. Given all these issues I just assume that manufacturers routinely come up with passenger and cargo volume specs that show them in their best light. Cubic feet at least has the advantage of being a standardized measurement even if the method of calculating cargo space varies and I usually ignore claimed differences of 10% or less.

After researching reviews of the Tiguan, my takeaway -- reading between the lines -- is a resounding "meh". Amiright? Thanks Tom!

      @@aayonce4 Tiguan looks great and the reviews I've read are just so-so, especially regarding driving dynamics. I'll test them both, at some point, when it's safe to do so. Do you have one? Do you like it? It's still on my list, along with Outback, CX5, and Cherokee (which my wife does not want but which intrigues me). Thanks for your reply.

    Yep, Teramont, 'cause we have Tiguan and Touareg and it seems that VW decided that Atlas should start with letter T as well

      Sort of similar to what Ford does... Excursion, Expedition, Explorer, Escape, Eco Sport. What else?

    If it's a smaller version of the Atlas, then it should cost less than the Atlas, not more!

    Of all these vehicles, only Grand Cherokee was designed to be two row and is rear wheel drive, and offers V8s. All to say, it is a different beast all together and superior.

    Tom, I won't buy another fossil burning vehicle. When will the BEV version of this vehicle show up in the US?

    • @DrivenCarReviews

      There are no plans for an Atlas EV as far as I know. Only the ID Buzz, a minivan.

    No leather seats even on a 45K model. Yikes. Also, goodness gracious there is so much hard plastic across this cabin. Also no power passenger seats. Hard pass.
