  • In today's video I will be looking at the NEW Titleist Vokey SM10 Wedges. I recently had the chance to catch up with Titleist about their new release of the Vokey SM10's and lets be honest they are the best in the wedge game, but with a release only ever 2 years I think I just wanted a bit more......

Vokey fails to mention that the change they make is so slight that an amateur would never notice the difference.

No. You 100% notice the weight shift on the new ones. Took some getting used to but it makes them hit so consistently

I had an SM6 60° once. It was nice, the spin was great and the true drop and stop was addictive. To replace it when I felt performance had dropped was off memory here £130 for SM8. Obscene amount of money. I went for a Mack Daddy 4 in the end, just as good, slightly less spin in my hands but £90. Titleist sponsorship of the pros is pushing prices up and up, but it's golf clubs, unless we are pros or + handicappers having all this expensive gear isn't going to make any difference.

Great content Dan. I’ve tried something different this year, moving from SM7 to the Mizuno S23 after the reviews one line last year. Not had a chance to try them on the course yet - but impressed from some range sessions over the winter.

A very good review with lots of valid points. There has always been a “problem child in the Vokey range regarding ball flight. It tended to be gap wedge 50-52 degree option which was really difficult to flight down. I’m with you on not liking the idea of moving the CG to the middle of the lower lofts. I’m interested to hear how the S grind performs with the moved CG, it’s been a great grind to get the ball up in the air, but not for the lower flighted shots.

Hi Dan. Fascinating insight into the world of wedges and refreshingly honest. Thankfully for me I’m a bit long in the tooth and lacking in ability to really benefit from all that detail otherwise I could get seriously bogged down with the numbers and spend more money than is good for me. Still very interesting and another solid review video. 👍

Whoa Dan....... that didnt take long...... nice to be able to say what you think eh? Cathartic? I have vokeys but the jet black and brushed steel dont keep their finish long........ I do like them but its a lot of money for a wedge where the finish scrapes off. I actually got slate blues. Cost more but they keep their finish. Looking forward to you pushing Hush Puppies over Footjoys..... :)

I’ve played titliest wedges for years and having tested the SM10 lam sticking with my 9’s. I agree there is not enough difference to make me change. Frankly if your pro still has SM9 at a cheaper price and they can be fitted to your game it’s a no brainer. Keep up the content Dan and look forward to seeing you on the course soon.

My short game has always been my Achilles heel, then in the summer whilst playing in the US with my son, he passed me one of his Vokey’s to try. Oh blimey, what a difference! I immediately invested in a couple of SM9’s, then more recently, another to fit a gap above my PW. I’m not good enough to tell any difference between 9 and 10, but between Vokeys and others, night and day. If the SM9 prices continue to get discounted as a result of the launch of the 10’s I’ll buy a few more. Be great to experiment with different lofts and bounces. BTW Dan, It felt like you spoke with a bit more freedom on this one. Personally, I liked it.

I was on my way last year to book a fitting for Vokey wedges but I was not really sure due to I use Cleveland wedges today.
I think it is difficult to choose when you have so many good wedges, Vokey, Cleveland, Cobra, Taylor Made, PING etc.
But my wedges are needed to be change, so I really have to find a shop or retailer that have brands that i can choose between and then go for a fitting.😊

Interesting video Dan ,I’m still using sm6 wedges that have been sharpened up and are a bit battered,my gap wedge has very little bounce and does not work well on the slightly longer fairways I play on ,I thin it and thick it quite a lot and dont have much confidence .At some point I need to get fitted for for a set of 52 ,56 ,and 60 wedges ,prices are crazy these days .

I have recently purchased a new gap wedge, but I went for a SM9 because I wasn't expecting the new SM10 to be worth the extra 40 quid. I will only buy a new wedge when the old one is worn out, even when I could have done with moving sooner from my old 52 to the new 50 (much better for gapping)

I'm actually buying to renew the top end of my set this year, but wanted to watch this to gain your insight, my thoughts are that there does come a point where improvements only come in micro increments, that certainly seems the case with these wedges, the nickle is nice, but it's aesthetics, the full face grooves surely would have been the biggest selling point and would have given a bit more for the price tag.

Had vokeys. SM9s and they were good wedges. Finish didn't last long on them but they are tools. Changed recently though to Clevelands and they are brilliant. Feel like they spin a ton more and feel like I have more control.

From SM8 to now is Vokey's final form imo. Not the highest spinning Ive found, but most consistent spin unless ball is wet. I know if I pick up a Vokey 58 I can expect to launch it at high 70s ball speed, 27-28* launch, 8500 spin, 92 carry. Can stretch it to 100 or smooth it to 80. 54D is the best chipping club ive ever had. They do all I want and nothing I don't.

Good honest review Dan. It’s difficult being the market leader and living with the fear of losing your market share. So each year it’s blah blah buy a new model. Tiresome but the nature of the beast I guess. Shame these companies can’t be as honest as you, I think they would become even more popular if they cut out the marketing nonsense

I own the sm9 wedges in 46, 52 and 60. My 56 was an sm6. I bought a new sand wedge in sm10 and I really don’t see any difference than the sm9. I can feel the weight in the hosel/neck area has gotten even heavier. Helps square the club face at impact. Overall, I’m really not blown away. I probably should’ve just paid a fraction of the price for a brand new sm9.

  • @texmex697

Used to play Vokeys but switched to Cleveland. Having the right grind is important, but only when your ground conditions are high quality and consistent, which for most club golfers in the UK doesn't happen. The slight cut shot around the green is what I play, but I chose a wedge with 2* less then open it up. Most players should change their wedge 1 to 2 years, but they don't, and most I've seen don't even keep them clean, so micro grooves are a waste. The 8* bounce is mostly only good for tight lies which would probably make them unplayable in soggy UK for 5 months of the year.

To be honest, when I replace my current wedges, I will be looking for the cheapest as I cannot see how they can charge more for something that realistically hasn’t changed significantly. Also I have yet to see a wedge fitting offered in the my area, by any brand. I am seriously considering getting Costco wedges as at least they are lower cost for similar performance. Golf equipment is getting to expensive for little gain.

I use the Callaway Mack Daddy Forged wedges from 2017, designed by Roger Cleveland with Phil Mickelson's input. I think it is a myth you need max spin...my wedges are 7 years old and the ball lands and stops with in 3 feet after the bounce. I wonder if vokey wedges are a bit of a copy of the old cleveland 588 that was so popular just like the scotty newport looks like a ping answer putter..
Question If wedges require feel why are the vokeys not forged (they say it doesn't make a difference) ...but the irons for longer shots are forged...My callaway md forged are a lot softer and better feeling than any vokey I have tried

Believe your conclusion that Vokeys are played by more players than any other wedge is correct. That being said, the vast majority of those players, other than professionals or accomplished players bagging Vokey wedges, realistically wont be able to strike the those wedges between the 2-5 groves your referenced. Nor will they be able to utilize the proper loft/grind that their inconsistent swing may require. Most will simply purchase a Vokey thru name recognition, failing to get a fitting. Skill level is just as important for many when choosing a wedge, so a blade style wedge often can do more harm than good. It's all about marketing then isn't it?

Most fitters dont have a swing weight maching, dont have many shafts to test, definitely then dont have those shafts in different lengths, dont haave different grip options to try which in turn change swing weights again. You cant hit real balls at most "fitters", you cant even hit off grass!, so my question to you Dan is why bother getting fit when this is the case with 99% of "fitters"?
On soles/bounces you should be able to work out which is best suited to you yourself, I mean lets be honest in the UK, it could be rock hard ground, sloppy mud, hard compact bunkers or soft play sand bunkers and even like you were then playing off mats hahaha, pick the one that best suits you by reading about them.

You can't do Titleist club reviews after they've just stopped sponsoring. Titleist made the best wedges right up until now? Cool story. Bounce has always been extremely important because it's a deciding factor in the cleanliness and positioning of the contact which is the most important thing for spin and ball flight control, even more than loft.
