When my Grandmother passed, I received the music that was found in her piano bench. I have so much joy playing the early 1900's music and thinking of what a wonderful person she was. I am sure the owner of this sheet music cabinet will have the same pleasure from this beautiful piece of furniture. Have a beautiful Christmas with your family.
Nice to see you and your dad working together, I’m sure he is proud of you carrying on the family tradition of restoring furniture. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with many more projects to come.
Beautiful job, as usual, Trena. I'm a classical musician and I have NEVER seen a music cabinet of that particular design. It's a very sweet, practical and relatively compact piece of furniture. It could easily be stored in the nook or corner of a small music studio or den. I love it! You can't go wrong with a deep, rich, luxurious mahogany finish. After all, The Bombay Company created a whole business model around that look. Anyway, I glad to seeing you settling in to your new (old) digs in Saskatoon. As I mentioned before, Regina/Saskatoon are my old stomping grounds and I know the area and the people well. Of course, you fit right in. You have a bit of that Western hospitality built into your genes. Nice to see your dad getting his toes wet again, too.
Oh my gosh, the musician in me just got so excited seeing all of the music hidden under the drawers! Have an amazing Christmas with your family, Trena! ❤
My first few visits to your channel since the move. Sounds like you're glad to be back home and working with your Dad. Very wonderful. Glad I found your channel again!
Memories. Back in the 80s I helped a friend who did furniture restoration/small custom work. It is amazing how much abuse and damage can be undone on well built solid wood furniture. The one sad note was that some repeat customers subjected the redone items to the same abuse. The reference to Goudey stains also brought memories. In the 70s I crewed on an older wood racing yacht in Toronto. One of the owners was a principal in Goudey’s. Amongst other things he made up canned heat for the little gimbal “stove” we had. We called the stuff “Jacko” in his honour.
I was given a vintage file cabinet from my old elementary school. Behind the draws I found old test answers and student behavior management techniques. If only I had those test answers back in the day! Good to see someone using a flat plate to stop the wood being dented when removing the nails. Very nice result. I'm wondering if it could be made to look fancier with better knobs. The wood ones are ok, but they look a bit Armish. You know what would work. Putting those on the lathe and turning a few circles in that domed front. Would just lift it a bit.
It is lovely watching you working with your dad again. What a beautiful job you have done on this Music storage cabinet. I’m sure she would love to receive the music back if it has come from her family. Those things are so precious. Once again, your talent shines through and it is a pleasure watching you work.
I was once surprised by a painted on finish which was kind of a bummer. More recently I found a bar cart that was in ok shape but I *think* was stored in a shed or or something that caused the shellac on top to bubble from heat. Just a guess. Overall it was in good shape though. I thought maybe I could reconstitute the shellac finish on the top and just clean up the rest of it. I was so careful to just use some denatured alcohol lightly on the top because I thought it was a painted on finish. It just wasn’t working so I gave up and stripped the top. Turned out it wasn’t painted on, it was solid mahogany with a beautiful grain. Ended up stripping the top, doing a sort of French polish on the top with shellac, and putting some poly over that because it will be in a location where I can’t keep the heathens from putting things on it. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture. Could have saved myself some time if I’d looked a little harder!
When buying used furniture with drawers or exploring an abandoned house with furniture left behind you always pull out the bottom drawer all the way to see if anything is hidden under it.
You made it look almost new! That is an amazing job on the finish.....without losing the antique quality. That other finish was terrible and you truly saved this! So nice to see your Dad in the shop today!
Thank you, Trena. I want to wish you and your dad a Merry Christmas and safe and Happy New Year. I love your content, you are not only a great restorer but a good teacher.
You did a beautiful restoration. I had never seen a music cabinet before. Very interesting piece of furniture. The owner must be thrilled with the restoration. May the history of this furniture live on for generations.

What a unique piece! It came out lovely.
I was given a vintage file cabinet from my old elementary school.

Darn heathens! LOL!
I would love that for gardening magazines and cookery books.
That's quite the refinish for common wood. Enjoy your holidays.
I got much pleasure watching you work! New subscribers here☺️ Thank you very much!

That is such an interesting piece. My son-in-law is a music major and would love something like this I think.
I like the natural grain far more than the printed grain. It turned out beautiful.
Thankuou!
Cool. The dark finish is nice, does make it hard via camera to see the wood itself.
Yes
