  • (on left) 2019 Thinkpad X1C7 FHD 1080p low powered screen vs (on right) 2014 Macbook Air.
    The FHD 1080p "low-powered" screens provided in the Thinkpad X1C7 models have pretty bad ghosting. This has been observed by many community members that I have been in contact with on the Lenovo and Reddit forums. Several people I am in contact with have had their "low-powered" screen replaced by Lenovo, and are still experiencing ghosting issues (including myself). It appears that, being low-powered, there is not enough power being supplied to the screen to run at a reasonable refresh rate, which is why we see ghosting.
    I tried really hard to give Lenovo feedback on this, but they just didn't really care. Or, they have people staffing the customer service lines who don't care. They just want to know whether I want a refund or not. Next customer.
    I highly recommend you avoid all model configurations that have the "low-power" screen options. Some alternatives that do not seem to ghost (based on feedback from community forum members) include:
    -QWHD (1440p; albeit this is 300 nits but the general concensus is that it is definitely bright enough)
    -PrivacyGuard (1080p)
    -4K (2160p)
    -Maybe: 1080p touchscreen (I have not heard anything about this one, but I would guess that it would need to draw a fair bit more power for touchscreen so it will not have ghosting issues)
    Recorded with iPhone 11 pro, brightness on both screens at max, f.lux turned off.
    The website I am looking at to test ghosting is here;

    After a lot of consideration I decided to try out the 1440p screen on the X1C7 just this month. The panel model was an LG lp140qh1-spe3, heres my thoughts:
    -I can confirm there is NO ghosting on this particular panel.
    -Overall, the picture quality is quite good. I dont think you will be disapointed with it but neither blown away.
    -A quick google of the model will show that Lenovo stocked this screen in a 2017 Yoga so this is telling that the panel is somewhat old. I was kinda surprised that they had stocked an old screen but I guess that's not nessecarily a reason to automatically dismiss it.
    -The colours are average at 92.2% sRGB, 59.9% AdobeRGB (according to notebookcheck.com; see link below). Blacks are fine.
    -The brightness is about 310 according to notebookcheck; I will say this is "sufficient" brightness but I found it mildly annoying that I couldn't bump it up just a little beyond what I needed. Sometimes I just need that.
    -There was a slight but noticable green hue/tinge to the display which notebookcheck.com also notes on their review of the screen. I adjusted for this with the Windows calibration tool, but in doing so I noticed that when looking at white on the screen (such as a website), one half of the screen was slightly green and the other slightly red. It was subtle enough that I didn't pick up on it until I was trying to adjust the green out of the screen, but I kept noticing inconsistent results. After this, I couldn't not notice it.
    -Apart from the screen, I found the keyboard to be mushy and not as nice as the keyboard on the X1C7 I tried last year/early this year. I have read that Lenovo stocks different grades of these materials depending on different suppliers. I was kinda disapointed with the keyboard and would prefer my old 2014 macbook air keyboard TBH.
    -I dont really like the trackpad. It is small-ish and the flow when scrolling is noticably imperfect. I just didn't like using it.
    With all these problems, I couldn't keep the laptop. I wasn't excited about it and felt very indifferent towards it. I couldn't justify the big price tag on it so I returned it. I have decided to buy a 2020 Macbook Pro 13" since my 2014 macbook air has been so incredibly reliable and runs well still to this day. I think this is the best choice for a consumer laptop because apple cares about the consumer experience. The screen, trackpad and form are beautiful on it and the keyboard has been improved from those silly butterfly keyboards in previous macbook pro models...

    I've got a Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 6 and the ghosting is the worst I've seen on any screen in easily 15 years, reminds me of the first TFT panels. It's bright, high enough res etc, colour accurate but jesus fuck the ghosting gives me motion sickness.

    Which model of screen it is? Innolux has only one low power display and it's N140HCG-GQ2 (rev. B1), which is Lenovo FRU 01YN156. According to notebookcheck, it's the best possible low power screen you can get on ThinkPads. Their response times were on pair with regular (non IGZO) IPS screens.

      I believe notebookcheck.net review says this one is meant to be pretty good response times too, but it was woeful in my experience. Lenovo kept giving me this screen with requesting screen replacement and laptop replacement, so I returned the device.
      Edit: I just checked, it shows this screen was pretty bad ghosting actually.

      @@andywho333 many thanks for your clarification. I was going to order Innolux N140HCG-GQ2 (rev. B1) so I just wanted to be sure you're not talking about that model :)
      This Innolux should be the best possible low power option and I'll fit it in my T480s.

      I returned it. I was going to get the 1440p (QWHD) instead but they screwed up this second order (as well as the first) so I just didn't bother. Their customer service is atrocious. Still using my macbook air 2014 lol, but am very restricted.

      @@andywho333 What is mean "they screwed up the second order"?? So now you have the 1440p (QWHD) model??? I wonder 1440p model is free for ghosting issue...

    • @andywho333
      @andywho333  4 года назад +2

      @@apex1323 Apparently it is free of ghosting (according to notebookcheck.net review which is pretty rigorous). Lenovo have this security feature on their website that automatically cancels my order about 24-48 hours after confirming the order due to "security issues". It happened both times that I put the order in myself, about a month apart (the middle time a sales rep put the order in which seemed to avoid the issue). It takes about 2 weeks to get my refund back, meanwhile they don't apologise and expect me to fork out another 2K to reorder the laptop. I complied on the first time, and told them how ridiculous this is. On the second time, I told them to get stuffed :)
