Jason great comparison. Do you feel that the 1.8 has a bit more of chromatic aberration that the GM? I have both lenses and got the 85 FE 1.8 mainly for my a6500 but I find myself using it more than what I thought in my A9 than the 1.4 GM. The FE 1.8 is actually faster and literally silent when compared to the GM 1.4.
Still, prefer the 1.4 more than 1.8 just because I got money I can say that there's not much different from G and Gmaster lens and any FD... but still, you got bigger apperture for better low-light shoot, better coating(?)
Thanks Jason, I just bought the new 85 1.8 and now feel confident that I won't be missing out on IQ by going with the "budget" lens. Your video clearly showed that the cheaper lens is more than respectable and that the minute differences in bokeh are easily compensated ( at least for me) by its lighter weight and much lighter price tag. I am very satisfied with my choice.
Great review. I have both and I don’t know if this was said before in the comments but the f1.4 G Master is noisier at focusing and it feels that hunts more in certain situations, more than the f1.8. The new F 1.8 85mm is near silent.
clients only care how good they look on tje photo anyway. they dont care or even know what a good or distracting bokeh is. when you ask them which photo they prefer they always go to the ones they look best in their eyes. lol
Thanks for helping me make up my mind to purchase the superior G Master lens. Both are sharp but the bokeh of the G Master is what you want and are paying the premium price for. I am not a fan of football and the 1.8 produces only footballs. Great review with excellent photo samples!
I can see a clear difference at 2:00 where the background bokeh of GM is way better than Sony 1.8. To me that beautiful rendering on background is worth the price difference.. This is same issue that I had with my Nikon 85mm f1.8g vs 85mm f 1.4G.. Bought 1.8g and didn't like it so eventually bought 1.4G and happy ever after.. :)
Jason Vong yup. but oss with ibis > ibis only. I am personally using the Gm with my a7rii. love it. I only mention perhaps what i think is most impt for most pple. if going deeper. yea the batis has weather seal. oled readings. but this new 85 has a focus hold button. which can be customized. i change mine GM focus hold button to eye AF. n the rest is history.
Thanks Jason for the great comparison, can't afford the G master so I've just ordered the FE 1.8 you've just made me feel a whole lot better about my decision
fully agree: me too I bought the 1.4 too early. I regretted the purchase, as too expensive and slow autofocus. Now, with the new A7RIV I love the lens again, as it autofocusses soooo much better and thus makes using the lens a joy. I still doubt whetehr the minor increase in quality is worth the money; I could get another lens for that money (e.g. the 90 mm macro lens)
I would like to know if you hear anything if sony will release a second version of the 85mm f1.8 with weather sealing or not? And if not, would I be concern about dust issue and weather issue? Hope this make sense. Still holding back about f1.8 or f1.4. Thanks in advance.
Hi Jason. If money wasn’t the issue and you’re venturing into portrait photography so you want absolute best professional looking photos, which lens would you prefer?
Is the 85mm 1.8 a good lense for Sony Alpha 6500? Can I use it for Portrait and Street Photography? I Use the sigma 56 1.4, Sony 70200 f.4 and Sony 90 2.8 for Portrait. I do not know if I should buy the 85 anyway...what do you think?
Really well done video. Thanks for doing it. To my eye, the GM definitely looks better, especially in the overall character of the bokeh, when seen as a whole and not just closeup. Still, for the money, that 1.8 looks incredible. Here's hoping Sony does one at 135mm.
Ended up returning the GM, its noisy auto focus drove me crazy 😩 the 1.8 may have less creamy bokeh but its auto focus is dead silent and twice as fast as the GM’s, plus half the size, weight, and price. Just can’t beat it.
Sam Wong I've now been using the new 85 1.8 for 2 weeks, a classic car and model in a park, a steampunk event, and a Rennaisance Faire. I'm so happy with it, can't believe how awesome it is. I'd not bought the other 85's yet so lucked out! Can't praise this one enough. I was using the 55 1.8 for portraits as it did a great job also. Seems my focus hit rate is now way higher 75% up to 95%. Focus is faster I think. So it's a keeper.
Thank you for your review. I am in the process of buying one of these lenses and you help make the easier to decide. Thanks for all the Great Vids you put out.
you didn't notice any difference in AF noise? I'm told the 85 1.4 is pretty loud when it's focusing and in a very quiet environment it can be heard, almost like a walk talking keying. I wonder if the 1.8 is quieter?
Thanks for your video! Great lens for the price! And compact size! Jason i'm searching for a test of the new tamron 70-200 2.8 g2 on sony body with mc-11. Can you make a video of that? I really want to know the focus speed in general and specialy in low light...Thanks again!
Great review Jason, the f/1.8 is now on my get list! When you were running and gunning these shots, were you in AF-C and do you use Eye AF? What about the Lock-on focus modes? I find my A7riI is pretty slow at tracking, not really sure what the best settings are. Cheers!!!
Hey Jason when you did this test did you have the latest firmware update for the 85 GM 1.4? I looked at the date of release and it was May 2017...about a month after this video review was published. Really looking for Auto Focus comparison with the latest firmware.
Jason, you do a great job! Thanks. Minor suggestion: It is either 'more creamy' or just 'creamier'. 'More creamier' is incorrect. Keep up the good work.
clicked on this bc of the comparison, stayed for the cosplayers lol ! love it, beautiful pictures. I really wish to become a photographer for these cosplay events as well !
oh well, thought you were like an official event photographer there. That's awesome news tough :D Do you think I'd be happy with a speedlight here? Don't really have the money for a strobe..
Great review, i'm sold ! Gonna sell my Samyang 85 T1.5 for this Sony lens ! I don't mind the 1.8 because the 1.4 of the samyang is not really usable and too shallow to maintain focus for a itw! Thanks Jason, you made me buy an a6500 plus this lens ;)
Hi GREAT!!!! VIDEO!! Just wondering..Where did you get the strap for your camera? I thing you have 2 different hanging ( one for your right hand and the one hanging on the left..appreciate your help! Thumps up!!!
Hey Jason thanks for the comparison. It makes me want to go shoot at the next con. A few questions. Which light modifier is that (size, brand, link?). What arm is your assistant using to hold the flashpoint xplor up? I have a large octobox and I want to go as portable as possible.
I missed Wonder-con this year, too bad I could have met you! (And those costumes looked great!) We will probably run into each other at Comic Con? (I usually make it to that one each year.) This video was perfect, great shots too!
hi Jason, I'm new to your channel and I really like the way you explain/show/teach stuff. Really good job. Were you using eyes focus to have the eyes so sharp or simply face focus? Thanks in advance
Thanks man! Any full body shots, I do face focus. Medium shots, eye focus. My friend Mark, who helped out with the lighting, taught me that. Got great results.
Great review Jason! I can find technical details online so I like to see actual shots and settings in reviews like this one. Just wondering how you approached the cosplayers to shoot? All that gear and assistant didn't scare them off? :)
Hehe this past weekend we had an anime con here, small one but fun. I'm on a severe camera budget but I took my new, inexpensive Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 (manual focus) to it to try out. Took a bit to get used to manual focus (thank god for focus peaking!) but I think I got some good shots going. Course being an 85mm on my A6300, that crop really made it so I had to stand WAAAAAAY back from my subjects. In the confines of a small convention that made shooting hard but I think I got some good shots. I normally use a 35mm 1.8 that works better for the tight spaces inside a con. Your shots look amazing bro! Subbed! :)
Sooo, yeah after finally reviewing my shots with a manual 85mm, some were off-focus which was to be expected, but I surprisingly got a good number of them in great, perfect focus! Thank the Sony gods for focus peaking! But what I wouldn't give now for an 85mm 1.4 with autofocus! Time to sell my soul! XD
what shutterspeed and how much flash power are you using? i currently have an AD200 and a 30 inch portable dish ... i would love to try this on some of my cosplay shoots too
I was juggling 1/4 in the sun and 1/16 in the shaded areas I believe! With your AD200, I wouldn't be surprised if you had to go to 1/1 or 1/2 depending where you will be
thanks for the fast response man! i wouldn't mind pushing it also to full power if i really need to... my prime only goes to 2.8 though so i might not lose that much power if i do hss i'm also excited to have that mount that will allow Dual AD200's (but i'm still considering the AD600 because of the price is so good) anyway awesome cosplay photos! hope i can try it this weekend
Waiting for my 50mm, and 85mm 1.8's in the mail. I'd love the g masters but I'm just a hobbyist. So for right now, I'll just want to all the crazy sexy lenses online, and shoot with the more affordable ones lol.
Strobe I used: geni.us/6hCfcjO
Octabox: geni.us/mfEV28w
Lightpole: geni.us/VL63A
Jason great comparison. Do you feel that the 1.8 has a bit more of chromatic aberration that the GM? The FE 1.8 is actually faster and literally silent when compared to the GM 1.4.
I own the 1.4 G Master and after trying my friends 1.8, I can tell you that the extra cash IS NOT justified.
Go for the 1.8
You won’t regret it
Still, prefer the 1.4 more than 1.8 just because I got money
I can say that there's not much different from G and Gmaster lens and any FD... but still, you got bigger apperture for better low-light shoot, better coating(?)
Thanks !
Thanks brother
Thanks Jason, I just bought the new 85 1.8 and now feel confident that I won't be missing out on IQ by going with the "budget" lens. Great review. I have both and I don’t know if this was said before in the comments but the f1.4 G Master is noisier at focusing and it feels that hunts more in certain situations, more than the f1.8. The new F 1.8 85mm is near silent.
much better for video for 85.8
The fact that there's a 1200$ difference between these lenses...mindblowing
Check out my new video on the BEST 85mm lenses. The extra $1200 could be justified, just depending on the shooter! :)
Yeah that influences the choice A LOT when you see how similar in quality they are.
Michael 1200 diff is crazy until you got a few amazing photos out of it. The isolation on ur subject at 1.4 vs. 1.8 is a major diff to me.
clients only care how good they look on tje photo anyway. they dont care or even know what a good or distracting bokeh is. when you ask them which photo they prefer they always go to the ones they look best in their eyes. lol
F1.8 85mm sony is awesome . Cant complain !
Im not going to get gm for 1800 when you can get sony for 1/3 of the price. Thanks Jason. Another great vid! 👍
Thanks Jay!
Thanks for helping me make up my mind to purchase the superior G Master lens. Both are sharp but the bokeh of the G Master is what you want and are paying the premium price for. I am not a fan of football and the 1.8 produces only footballs.
Great review with excellent photo samples!
Thanks for watching, john!
Here's the thing, 1.8 is actually 10% sharper than 1.4.
If you have clients that make the GM affordable, sure. If you have every day clients, they wouldn’t know the difference
Stanley Bucasas that's what I was thinking as well, if you're doing stuff like senior portraits I don't think they'll know the difference
When there's cosplay and Sony in one video. I am contempt with life now.
ha! more cosplays and sony coming then!
This is awesome. Did you get a security asking you to leave or you just showed up and shoot?
Awesome video Jason, great meeting you at Photo Plus. Your photos look great. I just picked up the Sony A7 III and the 85mm F1.8.
if you need the best overall Sony 85.
buy the GM.
if you need OSS.
buy the Batis.
if youre on budget
get the Sony F1.8.
Since the newer sony bodies have IBIS, it really makes the new 1.8 comparable to the batis. Of course the batis has weather sealing as well.
Jason Vong
yup. but oss with ibis > ibis only.
I am personally using the Gm with my a7rii. love it.
I only mention perhaps what i think is most impt for most pple. if going deeper. yea the batis has weather seal. oled readings.
but this new 85 has a focus hold button. which can be customized. i change mine GM focus hold button to eye AF. n the rest is history.
since these lenses are so fast, you could almost get away with having no kind of stabilisation tough
sgpork If you need pro shots and want to save tons of money get the new 1.8!
Excellent review Jason, the best comparaison on youtube for now !
85mm f 1.4 Vs 70-200 f2.8....
please make this video
These are two completely different lenses for different purposes. You can't compare the two.
SlowLy but sureLy becoming my favorite you tuber . You're killing it. Keep it up bro
Thank you so much!
Stoned Sober Hear, hear!
I'm literally switching to Sony because of you
bahahaha! welcome to the dark side!
2 years later, still with Sony ? I’m can’t decide about Sony a7riii or canon 5d Mark iv
Sebastian Nipon absolutely! Would go for Sony if you want something lighter! 😄
Kent Lee thanks for your advice
Thanks Jason for the great comparison, can't afford the G master so I've just ordered the FE 1.8 you've just made me feel a whole lot better about my decision
Glad I was able to help, John!
Perfect video Just got chance to watch it in HD. Keep up great work
Nice video jason, im planning to buy the Sony 85mm 1.8 , there's no way I could ever afford the g-master , saw the price just waaaay to expensive.
A $600 lens almost performs like a G-Master $1800 lens is really impressive. Thanks Jason for the review. Much appreciated. :)
You're welcome!
obayed haque if 1.8 is all you need n u dont need the Aperture ring.
no brainer. the 85 f1.8 is perfect.
Thanks! I can't wait until I get the 85mm 1.8. I can't afford the G lens but the 85mm 1.8 looks amazing!
fully agree: me too I bought the 1.4 too early. I regretted the purchase, as too expensive and slow autofocus. What an incredibly helpful video. You just saved me $1200. Thank you.
Jason your video quality has improved tremendously! Keep up the great work!
Hi Jason, would you recommend purchasing the Sony 85mm 1.8 or the Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8? Thanks!
Hi Jason. If money wasn’t the issue and you’re venturing into portrait photography so you want absolute best professional looking photos, which lens would you prefer?
dude you should work for Sony, every time I look for a Sony product review u pop out... Subscribed!!
You are definitely my favorite RUclipsr every video is so much fun to watch
Nice video, definitely going for the FE 85mm 1.8.
Glad it helped Enirus!
really awesome comparison, Jason.
Thanks jon!!
One thing I appreciate - he didnt say "smash" that like button......that drives me nuts. Great video.
Agree! I noticed that as well. Or -"hit that subscribe button"
Really well done video. Thanks for doing it. To my eye, the GM definitely looks better, especially in the overall character of the bokeh, when seen as a whole and not just closeup. Still, for the money, that 1.8 looks incredible. Here's hoping Sony does one at 135mm.
Thanks Jonathan! Glad this video helped! Zeiss just announced a 135 f/2.8 for E-mount. Maybe Sony will follow up with their own either GM or budget .
Jason, and about the batis 85mm. Which one is the winner ?
This video and pics are GREAT! WONDERFUL QUALITY...
Thanks Dave!
Hey Jason I can decide which lens is best for portraiture. Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 or Sony 85mm 1.8 which would be better? And possibly Batis 85mm?
Cool video, Jason! I just ordered my 85f1.8. Looking forward to make my first shots.
CAN U TRY THE 85MM F 1.8 ON THE A6500 IN A VDEO PLEASE THANKS
was waiting for a comparison! thanks! cant wait to pick up the 1.8
glad it helped!
Thanks, Jason. I’m sold. You gave me all the info I needed. I’ll use your link to buy the lens in two weeks. Kudos!
Ended up returning the GM, its noisy auto focus drove me crazy 😩 the 1.8 may have less creamy bokeh but its auto focus is dead silent and twice as fast as the GM’s, plus half the size, weight, and price. Just can’t beat it.
Your videos are the best Jason. So Informative and fun!!!
thank you for this video! which one is better for video? budget not an issue!
+Anthony Mozora G master
Coming back to this video so often just for those lovely cosplay shots haha
but it's just insane, thinking you could get a 85GM or 3 of those 85 1.8
Looks like everyone said the 85 1.8 is absolutely worth a buy. Too bad it's out of stock in Amazon.
I pre-ordered one on the 29th from Amazon and finally today it looks like it's expected to ship on April 15th and arriving between April 18-19.
Allen Freeman so, 85mm better than zeiss 55mm?
So IDK if they changed it during a firmware update, but the 85 GM now does 1.8 instead of 1.7
Thanks to your video, which gave me a clear idea to decide “not” to sell my 1.8.
Damn, that lighting setup really helps make portraits look much better. At $1140 in total, it's a little expensive, though.
+Eric Z expensive hobby indeed but you can accomplish similar results with Speedlites but after I joined the HSS gang I have never looked back!
+nolaPIC never had an issue with the GM being that noisy. But yes the new 85 is silent!
I wish Sony had a strong 35mm F1.8 that could hold its own against the F1.4 counterpart like the 85mm F1.8 does to the F1.4
ciao, mi piace molto il profilo colore delle foto, dove lo posso comprare ? grazie
How is the performance in low-light. I shoot lot of events, which is closed indoor. your answer helps me to pick the right one for my needs. Thanks
I have no interest in Sony lenses as I use the Sigma 85mm 1.4, but I Looooooooooved your video and looking at your photos. Great work! :D
Thanks J! :D Sigma 85mm is a great lens as well! :)
Thanks for your video! Great lens for the price! And compact size! Jason i'm searching for a test of the new tamron 70-200 2.8 g2 on sony body with mc-11. Can you make a video of that? I really want to know the focus speed in general and specialy in low light...Thanks again!
A superior review of two great lenses from Sony. Would have liked you show the comparison of bokeh balls with background lights. Thanks!
Great review Jason, the f/1.8 is now on my get list! When you were running and gunning these shots, were you in AF-C and do you use Eye AF? What about the Lock-on focus modes? I find my A7riI is pretty slow at tracking, not really sure what the best settings are. Cheers!!!
Thanks Rexx! I move my focus point around and use Eye-AF when I'm taking medium / close up shots
Hey Jason when you did this test did you have the latest firmware update for the 85 GM 1.4? I looked at the date of release and it was May 2017...about a month after this video review was published. Really looking for Auto Focus comparison with the latest firmware.
What are your thoughts on the manual focus? Smooth, responsive, clean?
I've only just bought my Sony a7iii and got the 85mm f/1.8 and I am LOVING it! I don't ever want to take it off the body 😂
Hi everyone, I have an A7ii and I shoot mainly landscape. Do you recommend this 85 f1.8 over the new Tamron 28-75 f2.8? Thanks in advance.
Jason, you do a great job! Thanks. Minor suggestion: It is either 'more creamy' or just 'creamier'. 'More creamier' is incorrect.
Keep up the good work.
I felt like I should have known this from that one episode of Big Bang Theory lolol
Thanks for the comparison. Did you shoot bother samples on a tripod?
I see this AR2 shots and really struggling to see if I should get an AR2 or an A7 3😭
Nice shots Jason!
+Toby Page Photography thanks Toby
Is it compartable to sony a6300
...?
Would you recommend an 85mm for cons? I'm new to photography and was thinking of getting a 35mm 1.4 or something similar due to small space of cons
For small spaces 85mm is too tight. I hear the zeiss 55 1.8 is awesome
04:09 coming down on her shirt you can really see the lines and the outlines.
clicked on this bc of the comparison, stayed for the cosplayers lol !
love it, beautiful pictures. I really wish to become a photographer for these cosplay events as well !
Almost all cons permit these types of shooting to the public as long as you bought the day-pass :)
oh well, thought you were like an official event photographer there. That's awesome news tough :D
Do you think I'd be happy with a speedlight here? Don't really have the money for a strobe..
Think I saw this before, but circling back now, and its a great review!!! Thanks man!
Thanks Frances, I was using the PeakDesign Hand Strap: geni.us/KvBW
Francis Mercado oh great!! Thank you buddy and keep it up with your reviews!!
You used a flash. It i didn’t notice it in the pictures, that is a good thing. Great job
Hello))) Tell me, what kind octabox and lamp do you have? But of course
what is a synchronizer? Are you interested in mobile lighting
Strobe I used: geni.us/6hCfcjO
Octabox: geni.us/mfEV28w
Lightpole: geni.us/VL63A
Great review. Can you tell me about the pole/stand you are using to hold the Xplor 600?
I am unsure of the brand but it's a lighting rod. :(
Hey Jason thanks for the comparison. It makes me want to go shoot at the next con. A few questions. Which light modifier is that (size, brand, link?). What arm is your assistant using to hold the flashpoint xplor up? I have a large octobox and I want to go as portable as possible.
Parapop 38in Octabox and the arm is Photoflex light reach pole
Jason Vong Thank you sir!
Yeahhhh, this has just sold me on the f1.8, I have an f1.1 for creamy bokeh. Thanks for the review!
I missed Wonder-con this year, too bad I could have met you! (And those costumes looked great!) We will probably run into each other at Comic Con? (I usually make it to that one each year.) This video was perfect, great shots too!
I will be at Comic Con but man there's gonna be way too many people there. I will likely just go for fun and casual photos
I think the difference between this cameras is focus hold button on F master lens. Otherwise identically the same
hi Jason, I'm new to your channel and I really like the way you explain/show/teach stuff. Really good job.
Were you using eyes focus to have the eyes so sharp or simply face focus?
Thanks in advance
Thanks man! Any full body shots, I do face focus. Medium shots, eye focus. My friend Mark, who helped out with the lighting, taught me that. Got great results.
Jason Vong thank you for your answer! I watched like 10 of your videos yesterday (as I just discovered your channel). I'm catching up.
Great review mate. Love it
Gonna get this 85mm 1.8 next month.
Keep up all the good work :)
Thanks Tony! :)
I think the Sigma 85mm f1.4 is a closer comparison just because it's closer in price. It's really huge though so that's one big downside.
Very good video Jason ! Please can you tell me where can i buy an alpha t-shirt like your in the video ? :)
I got it for free at a Sony event that was held at my local camera store.
Thank you!
Hi Jason, great video! What octobox did you use with your Xplor?
Thanks Joseph! Parapop 38in!
Great review Jason! I can find technical details online so I like to see actual shots and settings in reviews like this one. Just wondering how you approached the cosplayers to shoot? All that gear and assistant didn't scare them off? :)
I just ask. It's common to take and get photos taken at conventions such as these so they are used to the OCF. Really great community!
great video review- 1 thing, please turn down the disco music a touch -its a bit annoying when its so prominent !
Great video, Jason. I like the alpha T-shirt you wore.
Haha thanks man!
Hehe this past weekend we had an anime con here, small one but fun. I'm on a severe camera budget but I took my new, inexpensive Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 (manual focus) to it to try out. I normally use a 35mm 1.8 that works better for the tight spaces inside a con.
Your shots look amazing bro! Subbed! :)
Nice! I can only imagine how hard it is to nail focus manually. I take AF for granted too often. Keep on shooting!
XD
Hi Jason! What Softbox was your assistant holding?
Parapop 38in Octabox!
what shutterspeed and how much flash power are you using?
i currently have an AD200 and a 30 inch portable dish ... i would love to try this on some of my cosplay shoots too
I was juggling 1/4 in the sun and 1/16 in the shaded areas I believe! With your AD200, I wouldn't be surprised if you had to go to 1/1 or 1/2 depending where you will be
thanks for the fast response man! i wouldn't mind pushing it also to full power if i really need to... my prime only goes to 2.8 though so i might not lose that much power if i do hss
i'm also excited to have that mount that will allow Dual AD200's (but i'm still considering the AD600 because of the price is so good)
anyway awesome cosplay photos! hope i can try it this weekend
SD Comic Con?

Thanks brotha🤘🏻🙏🏻❤️
Waiting for my 50mm, and 85mm 1.8's in the mail. I'd love the g masters but I'm just a hobbyist. So for right now, I'll just want to all the crazy sexy lenses online, and shoot with the more affordable ones lol.
Please share which WB setting you use when shoot with flash to get correct color skin tone. Thanks
I think I was on AWB tbh. I don't recall changing it on purpose.
Thank u Jason for quick reply.
The image is considerably different/better at 1.4
