This was my first lens when I was first starting wedding photography and then I sold it, but last year I was in a situation where one of my photographers needed a portrait lens asap and I actually picked this up for them and I've actually started using this myself mostly because there is something so relaxing about a lens that I don't have to worry about babying because it is very affordable.
Many photographers will complain about the chromatic aberration and busy bokeh, but those imperfections adds character to the image for video. Much like a vintage lens. Dope recommendation Sid! 🤙🏼
It’s a great lens but the only thing I don’t like about it is that the minimum focusing distance is way too far that a lot of time when I try to do a close up/headshot that I can’t get close enough to the subject
@@edisito9 maybe he's talking about b-rolls the eye shots and the details you wanna capture for a build up or reveal while filming a video or creative photos maybe. While shooting video I also faced a similar problem my 28-75 tamron has a much better bokeh than the zeiss 55 f1.8 because i could get closer to the subject for that particular shot!
Maybe the Canon RF 85mm f2 IS Macro is better for you. She has a close-up and is very sharp. But it has a horrible bokeh. I prefer this one from Sony; however, I only have an R6II + RF85mm f1.8. I'm waiting for Canon to release an 85mm f1.4 with beautiful bokeh.
I love this lens so much! It was so inexpensive when I bought it, but every ugly location it transforms into a masterpiece! Amazing lens. The only minus - long focal distance :)
Great video, I love how fun you two are, I'm thinking of getting the a7iv as my first video camera body only plus this 85mm f1.8, is it enough for all my needs? I'm into music videos.
One of my favorite lenses ever. I got this lens last year used thanks to a combination of runner-up prize money from a contest held by mpb and then trading in several lenses on mpb that I tried to sell which led me to this lens in July 2021.
The 85mm/1.8 is a wonderful lense. Also, I love the build quality. It feels great, and while being rather cheap, it has really amazing glass. If you don’t own it, get it.
Great video. Thanks for sharing! I recently got the Sony the α7 IV - my first Sony camera - and have the 85mm 1.8 arriving today. I couldn't resist with the Amazon deal of 419€ (~$460) new!
Looks awesome. Love that focal length. I found a Sony 55-210 brand new for $100, and so I figured, why not try it for my a6400? I get similar results at 55mm, (as long as I have enough light obviously), but shooting video compressed like that is so awesome. Really intimate. For full frame I would definitely be using this 85mm lens.
I've got the 85mm 1.8 and my biggest concern with it is the chromatic aberration. I'm testing out the Sony 50mm 1.2 this weekend. Hoping to get some nice photos and video with it!
I have the 85mm GM and is great for video while using it on my A1 and FX3! I heard a rumor sony is coming with the 85mm GM II soon I believe it will be an F1.2 like the 50mm.
Q: Sidney need a favor if u can. In AF-C mode and your focus point moved all the way to the edge on a subject. Try to focus. Does it “pulse” ??? Mine does. I have A7Rlll and 85mm 1.8.
Nice video Sid. I love my Zeiss 85mm f1.8. It is super light. I was thinking about this lens but opted for the Zeiss. I can see that going with either would have been a good play!
Thanks so much for this video showcasing the 85mm. I have an A7III and now my FREAKING FAVORITE CAMERA OF ALL TIME....A7IV, yeah, baby!! The A7III really does pale (now) in comparison to the IV. However, I had purchased the Viltrox and one other 85mm, but my camera would just stop working after one or two shots. I would have to remove the battery and/or lens and then try again. One shot-cease up! Firmware updated and orig Sony batteries installed...nothing helped. So, I bought a 135mm 1.4 Love it. However...I have to have LOTS of room to get a half to full body shoot. Now looking at this 85mm length. I COULD buy the Sony 85mm1.4, but....that is just to darn much $$ to spend that I would be really "pushing the envelope" where this less expensive version (1.8) might give me the results I need. Thanks for your review and sample images/video. Seriously does help.
It’s a great lens for B-roll of people. Just the right amount of compression without completely isolating the subject from the background. Chromatic aberration in high contrast situations is the only downfall.
6:58 you said you love 85mm for video on the a7iv, the 4k 60 crop isn't problematic at 85mm? like does it not get prohibitively tight? Picking a prime lens rn.
However, this lens' well known "failure" is its ultra slow autofocus (but honestly the f1.4 GM is also very slow - and that lens really don't worth the money). It is said... But with newer cameras such as A7IV this seems to be going to a little bit better. I'm thinking also at the moment to buy this lens and firstly not for video, but when I need to make videos with this focal length I want to have a lens what can do it well. I don't think that this lens is bad, it was only made in that times, when this focal length was attributed only for portrait lens. But today there are very different expectations such as for example creating videos with this focal length. Your video between 1:42-2:07mins convinced me about that this is not a new but a budget and good lens for photo and video.
I bought this lens, and it was sharp in the beginning. Now, I find it has a soft focus even with all the same settings as before. Did this happen to anyone else?
This is the next lens on my list.....I choose to get the 24mm 1.4 first lol I think between my zooms and the 24mm 1.4 & 85mm 1.8 I shouldn't NEED anything else lol......Thats what I keep telling myself and my wife 😄 Great video as always! Man that studio is just so clean looking. I like it!
The Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN is small and terrific lens. It is weather sealed and has excellent autofocus. In addition, it has a de-clicked aperture ring for video. It is my favorite prime and on second place comes the 55mm F/1.8 Zeiss.
This was my first sony lens, i didnt really like it, last year i sold it and got the sigma 85mm 1.4 instead and i freaking love that lens! The 85mm 1.8 wasnt that sharp and had some fringing in harsh sun, and couldnt focus that close, i just always reached for my 55mm 1.8 instead
This! I think if you shoot portraits like editorial style there's a huge noticeable difference like the ones u mentioned. If you shoot vlogs and what not doesn't really matter its a great lens.
@gunnar Bjarki ; Was the sigma DG DN ? i’m planning for SIGNA 85/1.4 instead of SONY 1.4or 1.8 for videos and photos as well .What do you recommend and what would be your thoughts on sigma 85/1.4 ? pls take ur time to answer
@@DevAcharya Hi, yes the sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN, I would choose that over the older version of the sigma, even tho I haven't tried it,, but the older version is so much bigger!
@@gunnarbjarkiii how did you find the weight difference Vs the Sony 85mm 1.8? I was tempted to upgrade the Sigma but I wasn't sure if it's feeling a lot bigger and heavier or not

Sony 85mm 1.8 has been my first prime, first FF lens, first fav..been using it since my a6000 days..defo a must have lens for any Sony shooter..
