    Love my 85mm f/1.8... I like the size, weight and price...As far as the sharpness... I prefer a sharper image and I can always diffuse my portraits in PP. You can make a sharp image less sharp but cannot sharpen an image that is not sharp in the first place. Along that line, if you would like a less sharp image, there is a plethora of filters which will allow this but, when you take off the filter, the lens becomes sharp again...
    However, basically the same dynamics occur with the Canon 85mm lenses. The f/1.8 is a bit sharper and focuses faster than the f/1.2 but, the bokeh of the f/1.2 is to die for...

    I had the Sony 1.8 before and now I do own the 1.4 G-MASTER and I'm happy- quality and sharpness is so good- I don't care that it's loud and a lot of people keep saying that the Sigma is better. I'm happy with the G-Master and I think I'll have it for some years now.

  • @EuroRSN

    Just sold my 85mm 1.8 after 3 days of owning it and bought the 85 1.4 instead. If you shot with the 85 1.4 before then you will immediately notice that the 85 1.8 doesn't have that magical feeling. The bokeh isn't super pleasing with almost no wow factor unless you shoot waist up. The 85 1.4 may focus slower and might not be as sharp but God damn are the images amazing with perfect subject separation. Love it!

    • @TexpatOTG

    I love f1.4 but I bought the f1.8, its just a great lens, great image quality and small and light. the weather sealing is nice to have, but really the only advantage to the GM is f1.4 blur. but you are giving up sharpness to get that extra blur. and the only reason to buy an f1.4 lens is to shoot it at f1.4. because otherwise you are carrying all that size and weight around fo nothing, if I was going to buy an 85 f1.4 I think it would be the Samyang at $699, or the Sigma, the Sigma is probably the sharpest at f1.4.

  • @nightcoder5k

    f/1.4 has a shallow depth of field so that could be one of the reasons why it's slower to focus.

    Gmaster lenses are damn good but they’re too much money. Even sigma outperforms it for less. Granted I’d say the gmaster is much better for video because of the flare, softer image can be nice, declicked aperture and all that. I use Sony for photography though so the 1.8 suites my needs. Black magic and zeiss fulfill my video needs.

    I think background is the part of an image. So personaly I don't like a fully washed background. Why should I buy a lens which focus is unusable wide open - what should be the power of f1.4 lens???? For static object and for photo f1.4 is a good choice. But I would never buy a lens which AF doesn't work well at every aperture. These comparisons shows us that the cheaper sometimes is better and the more expensive lens is just a hype. For 3-4x price difference this is a shame of Sony.

  • @epgui
    @epgui 3 года назад

    It's plainly apparent from your shots, for eg. at 3:18, that the 85mm f/1.4 is not really softer than the f/1.8. Rather, in this image your focus point is farther than the eyes and cheeks (it seems to be focused on the temples). You can calibrate and totally correct for this using microfocus adjustments. You should also be comparing both lenses at an aperture setting of 1.8, otherwise it's not a fair comparison.

    • @MarcTaraz
      @MarcTaraz  3 года назад +2

      If you're gonna spend more than triple the amount on an f1.4 to only shoot it at 1.8, why even bother. That's the entire point of buying the 1.4.

    • @epgui
      @epgui 3 года назад +1

      @@MarcTaraz Of course, but you can't compare the sharpness of 1.4 and 1.8: even if both were perfectly sharp, an aperture of 1.4 would be perceived as softer just because of how much shallower the depth of field was. You can compare other aspects of the image at different apertures (eg.: bokeh), but for a fairer sharpness comparison you have to show 1.4 (at 1.8) vs 1.8 (at 1.8).

    I don't get why you compare a 1.8 shot with a 1.4 shot. Such a comparison is fairly useless. You should compare 1.8 with 1.8. That's it. Then we can compare both pictures. Now, there are many comparisons of the Sony 85mm 1.4 vs 1.8 on RUclips. They all spend way to much time talking about sharpness and bokeh quality. From what I understand, both lenses are equally good at sharpness / bokeh at 1.8 vs. 1.8. Now, I know that there's a big hype around the 85mm 1.8, but every time I see a picture from this lens I feel like it's so flat / dull / depressing compared to the 85mm 1.4 that seems to have more 3d pop. The global feeling of a picture (living vs. lifeless) is way more important than pixel peeping and bokeh analysis.

Sony made the GM for photography 1.4 wide open and made a fantastic lens, they knew that a lot of people may not be able to afford it so they made the 1.8 for them . Its Smaller, Lighter, Has Blazing fast focus, Its Sharper, Faster eye detect, Faster auto focus . The Sony 85 f1.8 has a double linear auto focus motor. The GM has a Single linear super sonic wave motor. Also, the Sony 85mm f1.8 is faster focusing in video :) "At the moment, it's cheaper... I don't see anything special about the GM but if I'd spent that kind of money on the GM I would probably be in denial also, and in all likelihood I think I would certainly be defending my purchase. I've heard on the Photography Forums that the 85 f1.8 has a slight colour fringe problem what doesn't get mentioned often is that the GM has colour fringing :/ Anyway for photos it's just a click in Lightroom and it's gone.
