Love my 85mm f/1.8... I like the size, weight and price...As far as the sharpness... I prefer a sharper image and I can always diffuse my portraits in PP. You can make a sharp image less sharp but cannot sharpen an image that is not sharp in the first place. Along that line, if you would like a less sharp image, there is a plethora of filters which will allow this but, when you take off the filter, the lens becomes sharp again... However, basically the same dynamics occur with the Canon 85mm lenses. The f/1.8 is a bit sharper and focuses faster than the f/1.2 but, the bokeh of the f/1.2 is to die for...
I had the Sony 1.8 before and now I do own the 1.4 G-MASTER and I'm happy- quality and sharpness is so good- I don't care that it's loud and a lot of people keep saying that the Sigma is better. I'm happy with the G-Master and I think I'll have it for some years now.
Just sold my 85mm 1.8 after 3 days of owning it and bought the 85 1.4 instead. If you shot with the 85 1.4 before then you will immediately notice that the 85 1.8 doesn't have that magical feeling. The bokeh isn't super pleasing with almost no wow factor unless you shoot waist up. The 85 1.4 may focus slower and might not be as sharp but God damn are the images amazing with perfect subject separation. Love it!
I would really to experience a $1200 Magical Feeling ... not sure a lens could do that. All my stuff is viewed on laptops, pc's or phones ... doubt anyone could tell the difference.
@@TexpatOTG alot of people can't tell the difference between a good photo and a great photo. As long as you're satisfied with your work then that's all that matters.
@@TexpatOTG Yep, it's much harder to see the difference in a blind test, when someone else shoots photos on both lenses and you don't know which one is which. Otherwise you can't tell if the lens makes the difference or your brain.
I’d also like to see the 50mm used properly exposed when compared to the 1.8. The 1.8 looks a little better in some shots than it should just because it’s using the correct shutter speed.
I love f1.4 but I bought the f1.8, its just a great lens, great image quality and small and light. the weather sealing is nice to have, but really the only advantage to the GM is f1.4 blur. but you are giving up sharpness to get that extra blur. and the only reason to buy an f1.4 lens is to shoot it at f1.4. because otherwise you are carrying all that size and weight around fo nothing, if I was going to buy an 85 f1.4 I think it would be the Samyang at $699, or the Sigma, the Sigma is probably the sharpest at f1.4.
I hv also tested both these lenses extensively and I so wanted to keep 1.4GM but unfortunately had to send it back and keep 1.8.. For videos 1.4 somehow doesn't wrk if shot wide open and subject is moving...For static subjects it works beautifully and i love how 1.4 renders the backgrounds.... :)
Thanks Andreas! Yea the GM is a BIG BOI 😂 I was just surprised how well the "budget" option stacked up against the flagship! The 1.8 is Def a great lens that I think everyone should have in their kit!
Great video guys. I have a question please I am intend to buy the 24-70mm 1.8 GM and one of those lenses. What do you think is the best combination for Wedding Photography + Video ? I am taking also any other suggestion. Thanks My Camera is Sony A7 III
I personally love using my sigma 35mm 1.4 and my sony 85mm 1.8. If you're already planning on getting the 24-70 2.8, I'd say get the 85 1.8. It's sharper and focuses faster, and much lighter. For a wedding day when you're carrying around a camera all day it makes a difference.
Oooh, what a channel, what a find👍👍👍👍Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was choosing between Canon r6m2 and Sony A7m4, I will take the sony.... Please suggest the top portrait lens (budget is unlimited) with the most gorgeous blurred background. And the second lens for shooting 4k travel video with the maximum possible quality and the minimum possible weight, that would for a day of walking around new cities shoulder and back said thank you)))
I’d say the 135mm gm or the 50mm 1.2 gm have some of the best bokeh. For a small compact but quality lens id look into the new 24-70 gm II, or the tamron 35-150

What would happen if you changed the aperture of the 1.4 to 1.8 will it match the sharpness of the native 1.8 lens? If so then the 1.4 lens would be great because it will give you the best of both worlds.
@@MarcTaraz Shame though. You'd expect the 1.4 to be superior at that price. I guess it really comes down to better anti fringing, shallower dept of field, manual aperture control and overall softer image.

f/1.4 has a shallow depth of field so that could be one of the reasons why it's slower to focus.
I tried GM at 1.8 too, still its very slow in af for video especially if the subject is moving...
Much larger, heavier glass elements in that lens. Maybe there's engineering tradeoffs in focus motor power and current draw from the camera.
