I still feel like the 1.8 is good enough for me. I would rather invest in 50mm 1.2 as the look of the images is much more special and distinctive. I hope DJI release a camera soon to shake up this camera industry
I agree, my 85mm 1.8 has left little to desire. I am currently eyeing the 50 1.2, though, this release has me wondering if a 50 1.2 mkii is around the corner.
@@SimplestUsername I doubt we’ll see a 50mm 1.2 mk ii come out as it’s still fairly new only being 3-4 years old plus it has 4 xd linier motors for focusing speed, I don’t see how it can really be improved
💯 my prime arsenal consist of 20mm 1.8, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.8. And I feel it’s perfect 👌🏼 In the future I may consider the 70-200 gmii to go along with my 24-70gmii for my travels.
I just snagged an open box from Best Buy for the 85mm 1.4 mark 1. For the price I paid I wouldn’t complain. But if I paid close to retail, I would be disappointed. Ps got the mark 1 for $500 open box.
The 1.8 is truly a special lens and punches WAY above its weight for price to performance. The silent motors, solid AF performance, and low weight plus excellent image quality put it on my camera more often than you might expect. Though they are incredible, for the cost the GM and GM2 aren’t worth it for me. Great video as always!
A 85 1.8 G built like the compact Gs would be awesome. The original 1.8 is already so light and small.. I wonder if they can make one bit smaller. That compact line absolutely deserves more lenses. I thought they patent a few compact wide primes.
The only reason I regret getting the 85 1.8 is because it's not properly weather sealed. I live in a rainy climate so I have to leave it home too often than I'd like.
The Sony 85 f1.8 is the only reason I haven’t sold my Sony gear. I actually keep my copy in my car’s cup holder lol, just in case. The chromatic aberrations drive me nuts, but its form factor makes up for it. This new 85mm might get me to replace it though. It’s like a mash between the GM mark 1 and the f1.8.
I really liked the Sony 85mm f1.8, my only issue was it had busy bokeh in busy backgrounds. Sometimes it looked cool, sometimes it was very distracting. The F1.4 bokeh is buttery smooth though!
I dont know what Sony is thinking. This should have been a 1.2 hands down. The 85mm 1.2 is an untapped market for Sony because NOBODY makes a 1.2 for Sony E mount. Not sigma , tamron nobody. This was a complete overlook and trying to compare the sales of the 50mm to estimate what the 85 will do was just dumb. Now when Sigma drops the first 85mm 1.2 for Sony E mount they will regret it . Whoever dropped the 85 1.2 for Sony would've sold like crazy and Sony completely missed the opportunity especially when the Sigma 85 is so close to accuracy of this lens and not that far up. So dumb. Sigma your up, hopefully they do not make the same mistake. It's just crazy to me how the 85 1.2 is untapped and nobody is gonna come get this money. Sigma will make a 1.2 and completely steal the temporary light of the GM II. I will continue to rock my Sigma 85 1.4, until they drop the 1.2
CA on the 85f1.8 is horrendous for back lit situations. I hated the lens so changed it for the sigma 85 mil 1.4 which has zero CA. I will at some point get the GM mkii but I’m in no rush as the sigma is so good
I sold my 85mm GM (ver 1) because it was so heavy and I really didn't use that focal length too much. I love the 35GM and 135GM, so I'm trying to decide between the 50GM and new 85GMII. Ideally, I'd buy the 50GM and wait for the much anticipated compact 85mm 1.8 G that surely Sony is holding back on until this new lens sells a ton.
Great lens review, but Rogan Dean impressed me much more. Thanks for the clip!!! I've been doing this sport since around 1996 and accidents on two wheels are a nightmare! I can't believe that such a traumatic event can make you become better than before, but Rogan powerfully shows us that anyone can do it if you have the mental strength!
9:34 LMAO at the 1.8 vs 1.4 M2 comment "... if you do have a little bit more money", Ummm yeah like 4 X the money (you can easily find mint 1.8's for $450). But great comparison vid Jason. Really glad you included that 1.8 version in this vid. Most others didn't even go there.
If choosing between this 1.4 and 1.8, I'd choose the 1.8 and put the money you save into lighting. My headshots are perfect with that lens. It leave's nothing to be desired.
Wide open the GM I suffers from poor sharpness, AF is clunky, and it is heavier and larger. The GM II is a no brainier upgrade for me. Just sell your old one.
The real comparison should be with the Sigma lens. That thing is a beast for the price. €1000-€1200 cheaper and just as sharp in the center, same bokeh. Just slower and limited by the 3rd party 15 fps
Jason, did you get a chance to test for 85 GM II AF motor noise with A1 or A9 III? (i find GM 85 AF noise unusable for run and gun on camera video in the past) thanks
I bought the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM II, because it is the best you can get, it is sharper than the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM which I also have, I can highly recommend the new Sony 85mm 1.4 GM II Lens.

I have the 50mm 1.2 best lens I have by far including my 24 and 35GM lenses. It gives 85mm rendering with the versatility of a 50mm

The Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 is internally stabilised. It works great on an FX6/FX3.

Hoping that they release a G lens 85mm 1.8.
With aperture ring and 1 button. Cause the current 85mm 1.8 does not have.

Probably Sony will release 1.2 version within 2 years after 1.4 GM 2 version
Check out the Mitakon Emount 85 1.2 at B&H. Manual focus, but 1.2.

I need this with my 35mm GM 1.4
Perfect pair. Just enough focal length difference there
Damn, the Mark 2 is whisper quiet...
I wonder if the Mark 1 was that noisy new?
Mine practically is new. I’ve used it maybe 3 times 😅 I hated it that much

你还给85mm f1.8加了个G,说明很认可它。
I want an 85mm F1.8 G with aperture ring.
Id say the winner is the Sigma 1.4 Art DG DN.
Witch boken is better in 85mm lens?
It all depends on what you like. No real answer as better
Jason showed the exact bokeh you can expect in all versions of the 85mm he compared. I suggest watching the video.
I had two different f1.8 lenses, both of them were faulty. Focus was always off.
Just a FYI, the F1.8 isn't a "G" lens
recomend a camera under1400$ us
What do you wanna do with it? Video? Photo? Both?
