The 85 was the first prime and only lens that I owned for about a year. I've always recommended it as a must have focal length because it's so versatile, especially if you have the space. Love you passion for this focal length and appreciate all the videos over it too!
The point regarding this being a more uncommon lens and thus stands out is great! Ironically, before I understood what crop on APS-C was I got an 85 (ie: 135) and loved how it got me tighter compositions and of course interesting compression. Then, when I went back to my 50mm (ie: 85 essentially) I got to appreciate how 85 feels both not too wide nor narrow compared to an actual 50 or 135. Love this focal length!
I started shooting with my 56mm sigma that my gf bought me for Christmas with the crop factor. I really love how my photos have turned out with this lens and is now my new favorite lens to shoot with.
my use of focal length depends on my mood. whenever I wanted to take random photos on the street, I take a wide lens with me, usually my xf 18-56 mm. This is my go-to lens during the day. But whenever I want to be intimate with my photography and want to take photos in artificial lighting environment, I always use my canon ef 85 mm and man you can't believe what photos I take with this set up
I have a Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L from the old times. It is smooth. Recently, I purchased the FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro. I do not have enough room for the 85mm when I take pictures indoors in ambient light. The macro proved more useful than I figured. It is great for pointing out details. At full open f/2.8, I get separation if I want it. The need for bigger apertures does not rise often. Portraits call for f/4.0 f/5.6 unless you actually want only the left nostril in focus.
It's just true, Martti, I#m using the 85 1.2 ii too. To use 1.2. or 1.4 ist a riskful gamble with the dept of field. In the meantime I went back to usable photos when Ttking portraits roundabaout 4.0 . Greets to Suomi ;-)
I think you are spot on with the 85mm prime lens. It is the sweet spot in so many situations and gives images which are distinctively different from the ubiquitous smart phone. After all if you have the 85mm on your A7C (what i use), you can always pull out your smart phone for the wide angle if necessary
Forgot how much I love this channel. With 2020, my photography went to the back burner. Looking forward to coming back in the game. :) Great video as always. :)
I shoot adventure photography including a lot of overland/off-road. The 85mm is my go-to glass when there’s room to move around on the terrain. Like you said it requires additional length to get more in the frame than just the subject. I use the 50 and 35 on tighter wooded trails.
Agreed. I have found similar enjoyment using a 60mm ff equivalent. I also prefer background context pretty much all the time for street shooting. Super bokeh is not my bag. Nice work.
I purchased a Nikon 85 f/1.4 years ago. I have hardly used it. However, going to start and also use the other primes I have accumulated such as the 24mm, 50mm and 105. All are Nikon D lenses but as far as I know should work well on my old d810 and d4s. I just can not jump ship to a mirrorless camera systems with the amount of DSL equipment I have. I enjoy your videos, they are fun and entertaining as well as educational.
My Sony 85 1.8 lives on my camera, I'm obsessed with it lol I bought it thinking I would only use it for portraits, but I've used it for street, landscape and even astro and have never been let down. Everyone needs an 85. Yes sometimes you have to stand far away but it'll completely change your photography
I am totally agree! I am shooting 90% of my photos with a Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 on my Canon APSC DSLR (80mm equivalent). The sharpness and the character of these lenses are amazing. And the 80-85mm range is way more useful for a prime lens: you can compose for the detail, get further away from the people (pandemic edition) and even shoot some far away cityscapes without cropping out a 40% of your image in post (the case with a 35 or 50mm).
I used the FE 88mm 1.8 for a year and liked the results. I just upgraded to the Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN and feel immediately in love with it (I also own the 135GM and love it too). Honestly, I would not I would opt for the Sigma over the Batis (over any 85's on the market).
2:20 - Babcock State Park - not too far from where I grew up! Our church did picnics there every summer for a number of years when I was a kid. Love that place and that shot!
i've had the 85mm zeiss for a while, then i picked up a 16-35mm gm lens so i havent touched the 85 in a while, but i recently shot with the 85mm for a video and i forgot how much of a beast it is!! honestly one of my favourite prime lens ever.
I have the Sony 1.8 and love it. I have found my best shots have been done off of that lens. Do not underestimate the 85's power as a street photography lens. No one really recommends it but it's the show-stealer.
@@SP-tp7pw Both actually. I keep an a6600 when I want to go light and carry a camera in my backpack for day-to-day stuff. The 85mm on the crop acts like a 135mm. It is also super sharp on the crop sensor. The photos look fantastic if you want to go that route.
I've just come from APS-C into FF. I used to have my 50mm glued to the front of my Pentax. I've just ordered the 85mm F1.8 as that should give me something close to that 50 on a crop sensor. Can't wait to see what I can get up to with it.
I love telephoto photography, both landscape and street. Especially for an introvert like me it saves me from getting into people's faces when I want to shoot in the city. Use the Sony 85 1.8 a lot. Hell, last weekend I was doing street with the 100-400 and the 1.4x teleconverter. It's a blast.
4:48 is just a ridiculously gorgeous looking shot. Holy cow! Got a 85mm this week. And I'm deeply in love! Somehow I think primes are super cool to boost your creativity. Walking makes your mind work better, right?! :)
JASON! You should do LIVE event of you doing street photography. From what I've heard, going LIVE helps boost visibility for channels. But it would be fun to watch!!
I skipped over the 85mm and picked up a Samyang 135mm 1.8. Crazy value for the money. Sharp as could be. And i get that extra bit of compression vs the 85. Im in prime heavan. Rocking a 20mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8, and now the 135mm 1.8
I always surprise myself when I use my 85 1.8. For me its a tough battle between my 24 and 85 for daily use. Love my 135 also but its becoming a niche lens right now. Can't get away from my primes, I just love them and the challenge it gives me. Great vids Jason.
I am actually looking forward to the 85mm f1.2 for the Nikon Z system that is rumored to be released sometime next year. I don't mind shooting with large lenses as long as they have excellent image quality.
I just started shouting with an 85. To learn it was the only lens I went out shooting with. I’m obsessed with it now. It looks so good. Everything from a different perspective
I'm not much of a portrait photographer so I have steered away from lenses like this but this video and the last has convinced me to get the 85mm. These photos are epic.
I just got into photography about 3 months ago and was recommended the Sony 85mm 1.8 and the Sony alpha 7Riii. Couldn’t be happier for being my first camera and only lens for now.
Great video again Jason with some cracking ideas that make you think differently. I've had a couple of different 85mm but mainly used them for portraits. I've got the sigma 1.4 coming today and looking forward to trying out something different with it.
I did a automotive photoshoot sunday in New York on a 85mm rokinon on my a7rii the shots look phenomenal i instantly made up my mind ill be shooting with it more i even found a new creative style
This coming year a really plan on using my 85mm more often and try to stop using my 24-70mm G master so much. Even though the 24-70 is my first love, the 85mm like you said will really make the shots hand out from others out there! 👏🏼 thanks so much for this video! Found more inspiration from it!
I really love the 85mm lens - so much so that when I switched from my Nikon D7100 (w/ the 85mm f/1.4D) to the A7 III, I bought the Sigma version of it. It was the older version of the Art series before it got replaced. Still love it!
Yea 85mm is a great lense for a lot of different Photography Styles, spec the sony 1.8 - small, compact, fast and cheap. At the end i sold it, because i bought the tamron 70-180. Yes its way bigger, and just 2.8 but thats my lense at the Moment i use for most of my photos
Love my olympus 45mm 1.8, which translates to a 90mm field of view. Such a tiny and powerful lens. Perhaps I should use it more on other subjects besides portraits.
AWESOME video..I purchased this used after the first time you reviewed it.. It never leaves my A7iii for family sessions..I can't get over the sharpness!!! Now to start using in for other genres...maybe offer another review on the Zeiss 135... THANK YOU!!
I love my Sigma art 24-70 DG DN 2.8 Although I'll be honest it's usually around 24mm most of the time. I love getting low, wide, and pointing slightly up to my subject. It gives them an unreal presense. I'd love to try the 85 though. I do have the 50 1.8 Sony lens, but I really don't like it. Time to sell it!
Liked the video very much. It actually shows a lot of photography technique like what and why happens when shooting at different apertures. Super knowledgeable. Really great! :)
My challenge for you is to make a video with just a cell phone. And make it a cinematic as you possibly can without using a gimbal and just using the stock camera app that comes with the phone with the time lapse feature the slow motion and whatever the features are that you can use at the highest resolution and see if you can make something. That can trick people into thinking it's a DSLR or mirrorless camera now that would be more impressive than using a DSLR or mirrorless camera I think
Two-plus decades making a living with a 70-200 zoom stuck on my camera...was nullified when I bought the Batis 85/1.8. The 70-200 is now rarely used. The Batis is *that* good.
i have a a6400 and im considering getting the sony 85mm 1.8. i am also aware of the crop factor which will put the focal length at almost 135mm. i think it would make for some interesting photots
I recently down graded on my 85mm I used to have the Sony GM 1.4 I sold it and got the Sony 1.8 version I love that one more to my style of shooting 📸 I just added extra money to my pocket while still owning an 85mm lenses
I love my sigma 85mm DG DN. I haven’t had it long, I can’t wait for the restrictions to be lifted in the UK so I can make more use of it and test it in a new environment. Used your video on 24 vs 35 to land on my decision of a two lens kit a 35 and 85. Thank you I love your videos!
