Appreciate that! I spent a lot of time researching & editing for this one, wanted to make it perfect seeing as there aren't many videos talking about the art positively on RUclips.
He is one of the closest to even getting to Akira Toriyama's level. Togashi is very very smart when it comes to composition and movement or displaying characters emotion.
This is what I'm talking about for years, everytime someone says that hxh "has good writing but bad art" really doesn't understand how the medium of manga actually works. Togashi is arguably the most refined mangaka in terms of just technical versatility in both the art and writing of manga at least within shonen jump IMO. I personally think Togashi is what he is in battle manga as to how Hidetaka Miyazaki is to RPGs.
I probably would compare him more with somebody like George R R Martin in Fantasy, because Togashis big strength is that his arc is highly subversive when it comes to battle shonen standarts, some of which having been in the process of being established while he was already going a fully different route with HxH and his narrative style of tense, character-driven plotlines which feature multiple PoVs and perspectives to a much deeper extent than other Shonen stories ever allow themselves to move away from the lead, not to forget a very "everything could happen" style of writing. I mean, the current arc is basically both a fulmination and escalation of this established style, where the plot is so thick with different characters who all have their different motivations and ambitions and are connected through a web of various histories, interests, alliances and hostilities, that it could be its own political thriller series. I'm saying this more because I kinda feel like what differents Hidetaka Miyazaki from other RPG creators is probably pretty much the opposite of what differenciates Togashi from other Shonen Mangas, Hunter x Hunter is set out in a way that you at any moment can have a clear understanding of what is going on, because it has really alot of exposition, which fits the style of the series though, which forces characters to always deeply observe and analyze their surroundings and act cautiously and tactically. Even Gon, the typical happy go lucky spontaneous shonen protagonist who just rushes into situations compared to more introverted characters has a very observational and tactical edge to him, very careful if you compare him to characters like Son Goku or Naruto. And I think it fits the core hook of what the battle shonen aspect of this series is all about, it is about hunters, not fighters. And hunters observe, they are cautious, they investigate, stalk and analyze their prey. And even in very battle intense arc, this element of the story is always present, it is always about a hunt for something.
Amazing video! Honestly, as an artist myself, hxh style is so enjoyable and it feels like a breath of fresh air from everything else, so unique. I never ever viewed it as ugly or badly drawn. I appreciate it so much, if I need character design inspiration, I look at hxh manga.
i think it serves as a great reminder of the fact that a normal human being like everybody else makes this manga. it honestly makes me much more inspired to make my own comic just knowing that i don’t need to be an absolute artistic god at everything i do lol
The early drawn chapters feels so raw and I love it. The noticeable minor imperfections of stroke patterns in the pen and brush, I really appreciate those kind of things. It really reminds you that it was handcrafted by a talented person.
I read the manga, and man, the way he interconnected everything is f*** impressive, the way everything he puts in the manga is useful for the narrative and blends so well with everything makes me wonder what this guy would do if he were young and healthy today, how much he could expand the Hunter x Hunter universe. For me that Gon ending was perfect, and in the end you see by the words of Ging what was the lesson he wanted to tell for all of us with his story.
This the kind of content I always wanted to see: a wholehearted and thoughtful defense of Togashi’s merits as an artist. Congrats, man. P.s.: I made a previous comment saying a few more things regarding his ability of choosing angles, of posing and of being playful with meta commentary of the medium in comics, but the links in it made youtube delete it. So sad t.t
I've just noticed some small hiccups with the editing: At 14:06, Gon is on screen while I'm talking about Guts. Guts was originally there but I made a mistake whilst editing and didn't rectify that. At 14:33, Killua is on screen while I'm talking about Gon. Gon was also originally there but I made the exact same mistake lol. Premiere Pro need to do something about those nested sequences
This video was a huge slap to my face! I was definitely one of those people who would say "drawing is not togashi's stronger feature" but now I am sure of how wrong I was. This man is a genius in storytelling, specially in manga storytelling, he knows exactly what he's doing and he knows exactly how to make you feel while reading it. Everyday goes by and I fall in love with Hunter x Hunter all over again. Thank you for your video!
While it is simply factual that some of the drawings in HxH are garbage, it is also just a fact that even more are gorgeous and that even the ugly ones are still used artistically well. Art does NOT equal aesthetics, I think that is where a lot of people are lost on this. Something can be aesthetically unpleasing and yet artistically brilliant at the same time.
No FINISHED drawings in Hunter × Hunter is garbage (well with the exception of 337 if it wasn't purposeful minimalism), u disingenuous moron. The 5 to 10 minutes ones are ugly, but try drawing something decent in this timeframe w/ a chronic back pain, a$$hole & then u will be able to trash talk.
I read the whole manga on an app who had the shitty early drafts of early chapters, and I never felt insulted reading it. Like, some drawings were just really simple and just a few strokes, but they somehow felt charming. Chimera ant arc is a great example, it's an arc with plenty white areas, there's a lot of loose drawings and empty scenarios but that gave it a very surreal feeling I'm not sure I've seen replicated in another manga
This video is so concise, and nicely paced, especially for a 30 minute vid, and as a video essayist myself, it's inspiring. I have only made a few since starting in 2022 but I know it must've been quite the ordeal to put this video together. Thank you
I’ve always held that while HxH doesn’t have the most impressive art overall, it does have the art that draws out the most emotions. HxH will never be able to match the overall detail and quality of something like Berserk, and Berserk probably has my favorite overall art - but HxH still has my favorite individual panels, because they’re so good at drawing out emotions. Berserk is great, but no drawing of Guts draws out the sheer despair I feel looking at that panel of Shoot on the ground. Or the quiet sadness I feel in Komugi’s last moments.
@@benakinnusi2518 Yeah man I'm literally complementing Hunter x Hunter's art with my post. When I said "overall detail" I meant "over the course of the entire manga." You cannot argue that HxH has art that is overall better than Berserk. But as I said in my post, HxH still has my favorite individual panels.
Loved this breakdown of the art for this open-world story! Also one thing to note is that his method of shading is on a completely different level than other artists IMO it makes the art so much more alive & horrific
Dude, splendid video! I learned a lot and I am now even more prouder of my HxH manga collection. I resisted the urge to say anything until near the end of the video because you captivated my attention. I will be rewatching for sure.
great video! love the breakdown :) and i was amazed at how you edited this video! i have always loved the uniqueness of the artwork and actually enjoyed seeing the variety between panels, chapters, volumes, arcs, character designs, backgrounds, etc (always saw it as variety and not "inconsistency"). maybe very much like how the entire story is more like a sandbox than a classic storyline, Togashi has also experimented with his artwork to grow as an artist and try out new things. keeps the experience flexible and fresh despite the decades passing.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed! I really love how you put that, it is like a sandbox both narratively and artistically and Togashi is always experimenting with new things. I think that's a big reason Hunter x Hunter is so successful, the variety and diversity. There is something for everybody in this story.
YESSS this video is very well made and PERFECT!!! If it stayed a few more hours I would have still sticked around, I LOVE hxh art ! I can keep taking about it for days!!! The expressions are especially a highlight, togashis way of drawing expressions is very real and pretty My favorite detail tho may be gon and killuas hair color contrasting each other (referencing ying and yang) coming together in CAA in chapter 199 light and *shadow* killua call gon light, indicating that he belittles himself in comparison *as shadows are only part of light existence* And the artstyle is very reflective since the more gon is fueled by darkness the more killua is "seem to be disappearing", Until he fully disappeared by the last page of chapter 275, after gon was far gone (it's very telling that Meleoron, the guy with the disappearing powers is the one who found him,WHILE USING SSID POWERS, they didnt even show THE AUDIENCE where he was) Gon drawn with lots of shadows(with his black hair a finishing touch) in comparison to killua whos drawn very fragile lines(with white hair as finishing touch) And it just seems like their hair color were chosen with this exact context and I adore it Also srry for writing so much I just really like talking about it Thanks for the video really!! Great video iam happy to to see some people understand togashi art he is really genius when it comes to paneling how every arc has different style and tone, and speaking of 337 i saw a video about a professional comic artist talk about manga art and he talk about this chapter how despite the bad art togashi know what he doing in the scenes and u can tell what is happening and that show how good of an artist togashi is.
I also had to pause the vid until I finish watching the anime, (it just felt like the right thing to do) but absolutely already thumbed up and faved because good lord is your editing and use of limited animation on those comic panels in this vid something else!
Very needed video for the Anime/Manga community, I see way too many people parrot the reductive "Hunter x Hunter Art bad" take it's become a meme at this point. Glad to see some well researched pushback against that narrative.
Great video. Honestly not many people talk about the basics of making a manga and what constitutes a chapter. And how good all these mangakas are. I may not be a fan of Hunter X Hunter but whenever I hear someone say that Togashi should just write and let someone else handle the drawings, I just smh. In a manga, art and writing are closely interlinked. You won't get the same experience and satisfaction if these things are done by completely different people(ofc getting help is fine). Only a mangaka who is writing the series will know best how to match that with the artwork and vice versa.
Phenomenal video. I generally agree with everything stated here and it frustrates me to no end with how many people downplay and brush off Togashi's artwork an assortment of excuses. However, I'm a very massive fan of the Succession War arc, firmly believing that it simply has the best artwork, panelling, and unique storytelling, with some of the most technically impressive and beautiful spreads I've seen in any manga. It would be interesting to see you read YuYu Hakusho and Level E, in manga format since they are Togashi's works and you see his creative muscles, philosophies in life and manga, and how mechanically savvy and intuitive he is with the pen since they also return visually and in his writing to Hunter. You mentioned how he is a master of his craft, but when you really look at his older artwork, even though it is less detailed and refined compared to Hunter, it truly paints a picture of his mastery even back then and just how far he's come.
What shocked me from Togashi Is the 11 September Spiders arc name is : To York New City Last chapter of this arc was on 1999 Last episode the 1999's version was on 2000 Spiders attack the auction on September Who died at that month was Uvo number 11 of spiders And look at the auction's building it looks like the twin towers and at the attack was 2 helicopters down on the auction's building
If you look closely, Pakunoda and Uvogin died at York New City Arc and their tatoo numbers were 9 and 11 and you could guess what I am referring to. And this happens in the manga before that incident.
@@rexgeorgerodriguez7620 Yes there are too many things like this in HxH manga Togashi put a lot of messages in this iconic serie The succession arc look at the black whale it's like a pyramid with etages And the 3 kakin's mafia Family Shu and Ei and Sha = Shueisha the name of shonen jump
It's been a bit but I figured I'd watch the video again, and I found something that Radman missed! Chrollo's forehead tattoo is *not*, in fact, a sort of Christian symbolism. It is instead a Buddhist symbol, the double vajra. The double vajra is a symbol representing "nothing/emptiness of the self" which is also sometimes referred to as a state of "indestructibility." I think this plays into Chrollo's character extremely well.
this was so beautifully edited, narrated, and explained didnt even clicked out once because i was so immersed in the video thank you for this masterpiece 🙏
The hxh manga goes hard. As well as the anime. I watched the first episode of hxh, and didn't pick it back up for a whole year. Now it's one of my all time favorites
Great video as always Radman, shows why you are one of my FAVORITE RUclipsrs out there. Just one small correction so it does not get corroborated by other people. At 16:40 you state that Togashi purposely uses the spades, clove and diamond symbols as tone indicators for the dialogue he is trying to convey. Togashi has rejected this in an interview with another Manga author, the author of Tokyo Ghoul Sui Ishida. In the interview he states that the heart symbol is the only symbol he uses to set a mood (when Hisoka likes something) and he does not have any rhyme or reason for why or when he uses the other symbols. The interview can be found on the hunter x hunter wiki (Hunterpedia). Anyways, loved the video and I agree with you that Togashi is VERY underappreciated as an artist in the Manga community.
Taking this info into account actually makes the manga even more impressive, a sign of a genius artist/writer is adding minute details that is intentionally not meant to be part of the grander narrative but still contributes in the narrative in a much smaller speculative ways, especially Togashi falls into the side of "gardener" as a writer and HxH is a sandbox of an art and narrative it is just fitting PS: I edited the gardener part so people won't be confused
yes Yes YES!!!! Thank you so much for this video, incredibly thought out!! He is currently one of my most favorite authors out of any medium and you greatly put in perspective all of the reasons why. 10/10 I subscribed, keep it up 👍👍👍
The inverted cross is great as well because (as far as I know) it isn't actually a satanic symbol. It has just come to be associated via misconception. So, Chrollo wearing a false symbol of the devil whilst he's playing the role of a villain is genius levels of subtle imo!
Togashi's art skill is not even "bad". He can draw the most realistic things like in Level E if they ever read it. In HxH he choose simplify his drawing but it still bring out the atmosphere of this manga. His art style is very natural, it never makes me feel "weird" like hands are too long or sth like that. He uses camera view perfectly to capture the screen he need.
I wasn’t a fan of the anime. But the manga looks beautiful. I can always appreciate great art. I’ll give it a try when I’m done with Berserk. Maybe I’ll like HxH better.
There's also the 1999 version, which looks closer to the mangas older artstyle imo while also having a more natural and darker color palette which if you like older 90's anime will appeal to you more
Yeah I still have some beef with the Madhouse adaptation. The first arc is the Hunter's Exam and I still don't feel like the Madhouse adaptation did it much justice. There are so many base blocks for character building there that weren't given proper care. The 1999 anime even though York Shin is a much stronger arc, people liked the Hunter's Exam but with the Madhouse adaptation people forget that arc exists. Plus really weird choices like leaving out Gon's meeting with Kite which is Gon's main driving motivation all the way up through the Chimera Ant arc.
You kept mentioning other mangas as examples but when talking about panel layout and visual story telling, you failed to mention Dragon Ball which is arguably the best example for panel structure.
One thing I loved this that you remembered that there is something called graphic narrative. Beautiful art without good visual storytelling is like pollution to the manga senses before being realistic megablaster whatever art without a good distribution of frames for me, the guy should be an illustrator and not a mangaka, Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) is my favorite manga artist because in addition to that alien art the way he makes his eyes wander through his eyes is like the Akira anime. It seems that the manga is animated by the movement lines giving movement of objects, scenery, characters, construction in a scene of the character making the bike skid her art is absurd or not she gains more weight when the manga builds her right through the pages.
I've read HxH for many, many years and one thing that kept me going even when the art got, well rough (early Chimera Ant), was that regardless of how rough the art was I could still see exactly what the characters were thinking and feeling. Honestly it impressed me when I went back to look at some of those chapter how easy it is to follow despite how rough the art is.
As a One piece reader, i really like hxH's manga. One piece has terrible art and paneling. You can't understand what the fuck is going on. HxH could have clapped One Piece if togashi wasn't sick. Feels badman
One piece's paneling and art used to be very good in my opinion. It's just becoming worse and worse, and now is when oda is at his worst. I theorize that Oda is burning himself out and not consuming/taking inspiration enough of other manga material that his strenuous manga work makes his work regress
I honestly think people who say the election arc would be better as a novel don't read a lot of books XD. Yes you could still capture the psychology of the characters but given that Nen is more important than it's ever been I don't see how anyone could seriously consider trying to communicate the use of it in an engaging way through text alone, definitely not possible imho
337 speaks about the soul and the afterlife, that's why it looks like it looks, it disolves as death disolves life but cannot destroy it so soul cannot be extinguished from the book of life.
this is a great video talking about artistic value but i do NOT know what u thought u were cooking with the AI interpolated footage from the anime lol. for a video about artistic brilliance it's kind of ironic that the footage of the anime used has been ruined before being put into the video. other than that, great video though!
It's a functional art and as a functional art i prefer JJK which is inspired by HxH and Yu Yu Hakusho i like togas art when adapted into animation as HxH 1999, or HxH 2011 itself because they give a solid design for the characters and settings that won't change abruptly and was less dated even at the apex in Yu Yu Hakusho Togashi's style doesn't suit me, the same thing happens with Inuyasha, it doesn't work well for me even in the most worked moments good video but I think Togashi is bad identifying that he has health problems and he does know how to draw because he has a lot of technique being used in the right way such as perspective and composition.
Imagine if togashi was always healthy
I had to pause to say this is video is amazing. The way it’s put together, the motion art, breakdowns. 10/10. What a way to start the year!

And look at the auction's building it looks like the twin towers and at the attack was 2 helicopters down on the auction's building
If you look closely, Pakunoda and Uvogin died at York New City Arc and their tatoo numbers were 9 and 11 and you could guess what I am referring to. And this happens in the manga before that incident.
@@rexgeorgerodriguez7620 Yes there are too many things like this in HxH manga
Togashi put a lot of messages in this iconic serie
The succession arc look at the black whale it's like a pyramid with etages
And the 3 kakin's mafia
Family Shu and Ei and Sha
= Shueisha the name of shonen jump
@@rexgeorgerodriguez7620 Iam very exited to see more from Togashi and just the shared chapters still have messages that we didn't discover yet
An excellent video and review.
Togashi's just a genius!
Thank you for this video! I totally agree and I was searching for someone that would explain this as well as you did. Great stuff.
Thanks for watching!
That's cool.
I’ve always wondered what it meant, thanks!
this was so beautifully edited, narrated, and explained
didnt even clicked out once because i was so immersed in the video
thank you for this masterpiece 🙏
Appreciate this. Much love and blessings. 💪🏾💙
This is a super well done video, your commentary in any video is really good!
Taking this info into account actually makes the manga even more impressive, a sign of a genius artist/writer is adding minute details that is intentionally not meant to be part of the grander narrative but still contributes in the narrative in a much smaller speculative ways, especially Togashi falls into the side of "gardener" as a writer and HxH is a sandbox of an art and narrative it is just fitting
PS: I edited the gardener part so people won't be confused
yes Yes YES!!!! Thank you so much for this video, incredibly thought out!! He is currently one of my most favorite authors out of any medium and you greatly put in perspective all of the reasons why. 10/10 I subscribed, keep it up 👍👍👍
HXH, especially the 90s is the best!!!
I just love the scenery, art direction, story and soundtrack!
i've always loved the art in the manga but i've had trouble articulating why. thanks for making this video!
This video is a gem, and your channel too, just became a subscriber, going to look forward to the next videos :)
Awesome, thank you!
Such a great video! Outstanding editing
One of the best RUclips videos I've ever seen
Woah, thank you so much!
Thank you very much for this amazing video
Togashi is my favorite mangaka. He truly knows how to tell a story and always makes it compelling!
Amazing work keep it up!
The inverted cross is great as well because (as far as I know) it isn't actually a satanic symbol. It has just come to be associated via misconception. So, Chrollo wearing a false symbol of the devil whilst he's playing the role of a villain is genius levels of subtle imo!
Great video keep up the great work
There are a lot of artists that inspired me to become one myself and Togashi was a big one. You can learn a lot just from reading his manga.
Good shit Radman. Very well done.
Appreciate you Steebs
Togashi's art skill is not even "bad". He can draw the most realistic things like in Level E if they ever read it. In HxH he choose simplify his drawing but it still bring out the atmosphere of this manga. His art style is very natural, it never makes me feel "weird" like hands are too long or sth like that. He uses camera view perfectly to capture the screen he need.
You won my subscribe by pointing out the character design and how important it was to the story.
"when the arc finishes" he said
Wonderful video
Editing, voice over, everything
❤️🌱
Grest video buddyyy😊
I love hunter x Hunter since school days. Now i'm 26 and still CANNOT complain about more Hunter X Hunter!!
Hella great video. Enjoyed it so much. A lot of great takes were said here
Hunterxhunter was my favorite show of Anime. before I was Blessed with KUBO'S masterpiece.
Excellent video. ☕
Thank you Phantom!
As much as I love the anime the manga has such a certain charm about it at times it blows me away
5 seconds in, already a goat'd af video
Togashi put nen in his work.
Bro people are criticizing panels that ARE NOT FINISHED
great vid!
I've read HxH for many, many years and one thing that kept me going even when the art got, well rough (early Chimera Ant), was that regardless of how rough the art was I could still see exactly what the characters were thinking and feeling. Honestly it impressed me when I went back to look at some of those chapter how easy it is to follow despite how rough the art is.
please do one of these with Yu Yu Hakusho!!
As a One piece reader, i really like hxH's manga. One piece has terrible art and paneling. You can't understand what the fuck is going on. HxH could have clapped One Piece if togashi wasn't sick. Feels badman
Dude you are my brother from another mother. I completely agree. Although I think One Piece art itself doesn't look bad it's the paneling.
One piece's paneling and art used to be very good in my opinion. It's just becoming worse and worse, and now is when oda is at his worst. I theorize that Oda is burning himself out and not consuming/taking inspiration enough of other manga material that his strenuous manga work makes his work regress
I honestly like the manga but I really do still believe that it would flourish with a light novel adaptation though
Excellent video feej
I honestly think people who say the election arc would be better as a novel don't read a lot of books XD. Yes you could still capture the psychology of the characters but given that Nen is more important than it's ever been I don't see how anyone could seriously consider trying to communicate the use of it in an engaging way through text alone, definitely not possible imho
Gotta start thid one😊😊😊
337 speaks about the soul and the afterlife, that's why it looks like it looks, it disolves as death disolves life but cannot destroy it so soul cannot be extinguished from the book of life.
19:05 referencing hanzos explanation after his fight with gon wouldve been perfect here
There's a reason why Togashi is the only mangaka who's known as the creator of not one but two iconic shounen series
Every Artist has a different style of Drawing
Chrollo & Early Neferpitou are my favorite designs
Hell yeah man preach the word of the inportance of fabtastic paneling its some of my favorite stuff in manga
Now I want to reread HxH, great video
I can NOT understand people saying it has bad art
Paneling gets you reading fast, just like toriyama another genius in sequencing fights.
My favorite thing about it the art style is its own thing
Most people saying he can't draw, literally can't draw
Love the animations
Togashi is the goat great Video well done
I’m gonna say it: Hunter x Hunter manga > Hunter x Hunter anime.
this is a great video talking about artistic value but i do NOT know what u thought u were cooking with the AI interpolated footage from the anime lol. for a video about artistic brilliance it's kind of ironic that the footage of the anime used has been ruined before being put into the video. other than that, great video though!
such a great video
What a video!!
Glad you enjoyed!
yes! the art has some rough spots sometimes, but togashis skill as an artist is so inspiring
17:47 considering it has little double horns probably the second reason.
JUST WOW!!
Togashi could draw as horrible as You could imagine but he is that Smart guy that plays dumb, he is a monsters whenever he wants.
