Hey joe, you should consider picking up a hydraulic press, two dial indicators and an assortment of v blocks. I've heard you mention it in the past. When I finally broke down and decided to get that equipment, it was the best decision I ever made! Being able to rebuild a crank yourself, on your own time with no added expense truly is a game changer. I guarantee you will be hooked! Keep the videos coming.
I hope that these subscribers do the right thing by you. You are putting in a ton of work. Even at 25% shop fee, it would help you out. Just my 2 cents worth. Dude got lucky that one roller bearing, and the crank bearing are all he lost.

when trying to diagnose the noise and location I always use a solid piece of wood, put it against different parts of the motor and the other end to your ear and use it like a stethoscope. Sounds daft but really works.

Great content - Yamaha TTR's are iconic at this point, especially TTR 125's. Most everyone who rides either started on a TTR of some sort or size or had a friend that had one when they were learning to ride. NOTHING wrong with low compression, low maintenance, air cooled 4-stroke bikes that are normally bullet proof for a lifetime (unless you run them dry of oil).

To help find the VIN scratch of the paint and take some vinegar and salt to rust the frame. That might reveal the outline of the numbers. That's how my Honda is, it has the VIN plate and it etched into the frame. The numbers that are etched into the framed are rusted on the edges and it makes it really easy to see them. So maybe try the rust trick. Love the videos Joe keep it up!

I’ve had one of these Ttr 125 for my first bike. It never let me down.
for thos timing covers you can use a washer with some vice grips makes it super easy
“the guy told me he had run it out of oil”- pretty much all you needed to know right from the start.
I’m the owner of the bike, I checked the oil before I went out for a ride and it was at a safe level, then it died and I checked and it was out of oil
@@sevendyseven4090 I change it fairly frequently, in the video it’s two different colors for some reason
it also looks to me like the bike got started without enough oil - it was below minimum level if I saw correctly
EDIT: nevermind, the glass window is fake... it had enough oil on the dipstick, forget what I said :)

Of all the scrap metal you have wrenched...not ever having seen a TTR125 in the mix says a lot about the bike itself.
And as a "first bike" they go through pure hell as they are generally the tip of the spear for teenaged anxiety. Lol
I picked up a 2003 TTR125-LE for $500 pre-COVID with a locked up engine. Turned into a huge project. Needed new cases due to stripped holes and a new main trans shaft. These machines are known for stripping out first gear. Got it going but for more $$$ than it’s worth.
I've never heard of them stripping first gear. They're pretty solid if you take care if them. I'm sure you'll get your money's worth over time.
Too bad it had the rod knock. Those TTR125’s are awesome machines! (Quick tip, Always take out the baffle ;)

I'm wondering if you could spin the valve train with a power drill with the timing chain disconnected to check for noise at the cam bearings? Just a thought,. Another great video, bud.

This video was very informative because I had no idea what people meant when the said u had to maintenance the valve every 5 hours
TTR 125’s are awesome if they are well maintained.. I’ve rebuilt a few of them that were not including a seized rod and another one missing a tooth from second gear. Surprisingly both were still running and riding up to when I tore them down. The seized rod would get stuck after running for a few seconds, you could free it up and it would still start right back up. They are great bikes as long as people keep oil in them.
A lot of bikes have the vins wear away from the cables, that’s why you seen that paint gone where the cables are it wore away the vin completely

It's pinched with no frame numbers strip it for spares or if you waste money fixing it the next buyer won't buy with no I. D or could even come back with the cops if the bike gets stopped and checked over they will seize it. In uk that would be crushed now if a cop checked frame numbers
It's a subscribers bike. I'm doing a free fix for him. He is just keeping it.

this is a untitled bike, the cops could not do anything because its an off road bike any way it does not need any numbers or even a vin plate
@@robertweniger6194 I guess it depends on the state you live. US federal government requires VIN. Local cops could confiscate it and make you prove it's not stolen.

Check the left side under the engine on the frame, for the vin.
Crank will need replacing or be turned as well as a con rod to match. Not sure that it is worth the cost.
I had a ttr125 they are so easy to kick over anything below 125cc is easy to kick over and can sometimes give the impression that it's low compression

I have an 85 Kawasaki KLR 250 that I’d love to bring you! It runs and rides but needs TLC I also have a ‘93 cr250r that needs engine work
There are bits made specifically to remove those caps instead of the Brummie screwdriver method
I hate that. My Suzuki RM80 and then later down the road my Husky WXC 410 both had same issue. Fixed the RM, then broke it again and sold it. The parts guys at Husky were useless and never gave me a straight answer on part prices and said they'd call me and never called back (this went on for weeks), so I ended up just selling it as is to someone who wanted to turn it into a trike. Once again, the uselessness over at the dealership caused him to not get parts, and when he finally found a new crank, it was almost 2k, so he scrapped it.
Those valve inspection caps come off with a box wrench. My XR takes 24mm or 15/16. You don't have to tilt the engine.
There is someone on ebay that can rebuild the crank if you get the rod and bearings,I had my outlaw 450 mxr crank rebuilt and it works I want to say around $130 or so.
Be carefully with bikes with no Vin numbers. It's the same thing as stealing it. If you get pulled over with that in the bed of the truck your charged as if you stole it. Just avoid them all together even if they are cheap. I could of bought a new kfx450r back when they were new for $800 but I knew better. I've powdercoated many frames and my buddy has a business. And it does not cover the vins like people will say
had the same exact bike the rockers were so shot it was unbelievable that the bike even ran like they looked like they they were held on a sanding belt replaced the rockers and cam with new and i got rid of that ticking noise every single ttr125 makes also the only way oil gets into the head is from being slung up from the timing chain to so they arent oiled good up there from the factory causing that issue on every single one
im promising you right now that noise is the rockers/cam wear
I'm glad I found your channel. You provide great information and I really enjoy watching you work through problems. Just out of curiosity, why don't you use a washer in a pair of vise grips to remove stuck plugs rather than a screwdriver and hammer?

At normal shop rates, this bike would be considered dead. Your looking at about $1200 -$1500 to fix. You can buy another one in good condition for that

@@2vintage Just bustin ur stones, I know these things change hands numerous times with barley any paperwork. Had my heart broken as a 13yr old when my YZ 125 was stolen out of my garage after a top end rebuild. @@sendit1158 In fairness, his "shop" is his garage, and in all likely hood, the person he is helping (for free) is likely not the person who stole it, if it is even stolen. Just thought it was funny, he thought for sure that Honda was stolen because of the plastics being painted, but this thing has no paint where we think the VIN should be and crickets...LOL. Its probably not, he will verify I'm sure, he offered to give the Honda back to the person it was stolen from, so...
Quick tip if you take a wooden dowel put one end on the head and your ear to the other it makes pin pointing engine noises way easier
Typically piston slap. Your not going to have much compression. U may get some. But. Nah. That was amazing. If he didn't run it with no oil. Could've not happened. Shit happens though. That bike is super clean and we'll maintained for it's age. Yea the crank is gonna be some monies. But u can probably find a good used one. I have faith in you putting on a new rod andcrank. But know they are aligned. It's a tough job

I had a old Honda that used to do this. It was the stator and cdi. They where just old and worn, they would heat up and lose spark, once it cooled down it sparked again. When it shuts off check for spark again. Just an idea
I've had that happen with coils .

Know your worth and dont let people take advantage of ur knowledge and kindness, that's how people walk all over you, This is all just my opinion and see that you are a very good person and you need to start charging people for your TIME, EFFORT, AND KNOWLEDGE, That you took the time to learn and enjoy. You make amazing videos and know ur skill very well keep up the great content and Stop doing things for free!! Your time is very valuable dont ever forget that. From one self employed to another!! Charge something even if it's a base rate..

There's always a VIN number right where the bearings go for the front forks on the frame

My take away is: if no rattling culprit found in top end mechanisms, then crank is likely bad.
Oil is cheap guys and oil changes are easy, SO DO IT MORE OFTEN,

It's a 125. The only crazy compression u will get is when it's brand new. But that compression is amazing for a 125 4 stroke. But thats a 125. So it'll feel like there's not a lot.
These Yamaha singles are horrible when needing to adjust the valves. The plastic caps on the left cover get stripped, and you need to disassemble half the bike to get the valve covers off cause the clearences are so minimal in the frame. I've hated valve jobs on my TW125 with passion. And riding without oil kills them in no time. I rode that thing with a slight leak in the oil line for maybe a kilometer and the whole valvetrain was shot

I’m going through my 650l and I caught the knock before it destroyed my entire engine
After you saw the spark plug was loose, then verified the spark and fuel, did you put the plug back in tight and then try to kick it over once more? I wonder if maybe compression was leaking out the loose plug to the point where it wouldn't start.
I bought a xr600r for 500$ for this exact reason. Got home did a quick inspection found a loose spark plug tightened it down and starts first kick every time still to this day. That engine is a beast

I'm thinking bottom could be a rod bearing since it was run low on oil.
my mom has one and hers is very cold blooded it takes 5 mins for it to warm up
VIN Shaved. Have the owner come pick up their parts. I personally do not work on any bikes with missing or altered VINS.

He can't even clean the stuff he works on before opening the motor.... He'll through some nasty piston in it and everyone will give him props because it ran but behind seems 6 hrs later it blows up
Hey Joe , I have a 2004 kawasaki kfx700 that I can not figure out the issue. The front cylinder is dead.
Take a big screw driver and put it around the engine and liston to the handle if the screw driver it will mag the noise
The vin would be on the neck. It's pre 06. 02 and 01 have smaller hub studs.
What if the spring and gasket from the fuel screw are stuck inside and only the needle comes out, would that cause a problem?

Is that a universal flywheel puller? Trying to pull my boys flywheel to put the timing chain back on after it fell off with a complete top end rebuild ….. don’t see one specifically listed for the ttr125
TTRs are excellent dirtbikes! Tho that motor sounds absolutely awful.
So the pilot was clogged...I would have went size bigger just for the heck of it...too bad about the bottom end bearing...I clogged an oil passage on my 01 Rancher and caught it before it did too much damage.

Vin usually in easiest place to see; headstock
The numbers are always right but behind the forks on the frame right where you were wiping the first time with your hand not down along the side in front of the motor right where the bearings go for the front porch if there's no VIN number then this is stolen dirt bike
I’m only 22 minutes in but It could have the wrong oil in it. If it’s the wrong viscosity ( e.g. too thin ) it’ll rattle its head off. Change the oil and put some thicker oil in it. By the sounds of it the damage has been done anyway

Well the first thing is it's making more noise in-between strokes , so it's a chain or valve problem. Slot of noise I've never heard that

yikes, I'm about to pull the top end(s) off my rd350 because the base gaskets are leaking oil. 😥 Hopefully don't find any extra problems like you did with bad rod bearings, not too optimistic tho it hasn't been registered since 78' lol!
@ wrecked revival. How are the base gaskets on your rd350 leaking oil? It's a two-stroke, there's no oil in the crankcase.
@@dannyjamison8337 It''s been sitting and non running since 78'. we lubed the cylinder walls a bit with oil before trying cranking it over so it was probably a mixture of oil we put in it and fuel but pretty much all of the gaskets/seals on it are either leaking or likely toast on it anyway.

They have grounded the vin off it. It’s on the non drive size of the frame(head tube)
Loosen that throttle cable. Every time you move the bars the idle changes. Lol
I have a 4 pin battery powered cdi and it gives no spark at the spark plug. What could be the Problem?
....Free FIX???? I had been thinking about contacting you to see if you could help with a '97 Suzuki DR350 bottom end replace/rebuild. The crankcase cracked (all the way across - both right/left and covers) while a friend was riding it. I was trailing him and didn't hear anything or see smoke.... he just pulled over and said something happened. Then I look down and see oil spilling on the trail, then see the internal gearing and bearings.
It would probably make for excellent content, and I am extremely curious on what could cause such a catastrophe, without prior noticeable warning signs.
...actually, I commented before seeing this whole video and seeing this one ended up being a bottom and top end tear down. If working on the Suzuki is something you'd consider please let me know. Amazing how you get 'em running.
