    Nice review. Nice car. Congrats!
    I have a 2003 Town Car Signature that I picked up May 2020. When I bought it the car had 125k miles on it. It now has 138k miles on it. I bought it because of a ninety mile round trip that is mostly interstate highway. I have used it as a commuter. I have used it for three trips to another state (1k round trip). It is without a doubt the absolute best road trip car I have ever owned. Can't say if it's the best road trip car ever but I can say it's absolutely awesome.
    I wanted a car that was comfortable, reliable, and, given current economic climes, that I could pay cash for. I had no intention of taking on a car payment with our entire economy in a shambles and my job being uncertain. Promising a percentage of future wages when you have no guarantee you will have those future wages seemed reckless.
    Having said that, I wanted to ensure that the car was good all the way around. That meant doing maintenance which was required because it was either put off by the previous owner or just a result of the vehicle being old. Above all that meant spending money on known problem areas with these cars.
    First - tires all around. The old ones were dry rotted.
    Then, fluids and filters. All of them got changed.
    I also replaced the intake manifold and the radiator as a preventive maintenance item. The intake manifold is made of plastic and over time it will become brittle. When that happens you need to worry about cracking and leaking atop the engine, or worse, inside the engine. It can also fail catastrophically - spewing coolant everywhere and causing the engine to overheat.
    The rule of thumb with the 4.6L V8 is "replace the intake about every ten years". Since the TC was 17 years old when I bought it and I had no idea if it had ever been replaced I went ahead and replaced it. While I was at it I wanted the radiator replaced as well. The cooling system is important and the radiator has quite a bit of plastic in it as well (reservoirs). The radiator that was in it when I bought it was definitely OEM.
    AC: one hose and a relay.
    Front end: Control arms and ball joints. It's common for those to wear out at around 125k miles. It's also common for the rubber in them to go bad over time. In the case of mine I asked the mechanic to check the front end when he had it in the air for the transmission service. The parts that went in have grease fittings. I'll never need to replace those components again. Which is good, because that repair was expensive.
    Back rotors & pads.
    1 coil pack.
    With regard to comfort: I saw a bit of discussion on the 2003-2011 vs. the 1998-2002 vehicles. My father had a 2001. I have a 2003. Of the two, I prefer the 2003. I like the front end better despite the loss of 2" of travel. If you're not driving in really rough conditions, why would that matter? In return I get rack & pinion steering rather than recirculating ball. That's an improvement.
    The seats in my 2003 are fine. Comfortable, roomy, with lumbar support and heat. The redesigned dash will accept more options for stereo upgrades, which I definitely wanted. A previous owner had removed the airbags in the back and replaced them with a spring/shock setup and it's fine.
    With regard to reasons the panther platform died: CAFE is one big reason. A V8 coupled w/ a four speed transmission in a four thousand pound car is a big hit on the company CAFE standards. Also, Ford's customers were dying off - literally. Average age of a Town Car buyer (non-fleet use) in 2009 was seventy years old. In 1999 it was sixty years old. The car made no inroads at all with a younger group of buyers and those younger buyers are the future, no?
    In 2009 the panther platform was considered a dinosaur that only appealed to a diminishing number of very old people who already had one and would keep it until they died or went into the nursing home. Ford had every reason to kill it and no reasons at all to keep it in production.
    At the end of the day I have exactly what I wanted. A roomy, comfortable, reliable car which I should be able to drive for the next six to seven years with simple maintenance. A car which I will never have to fear a wrecker showing up to tow away if times get hard.
    I've seen a lot of hard times over the decades. For reference, I've been around long enough that I drove two 1977 Ford LTDs. Those were bigger than the Town Car!

    • @skippythetubrat
      @skippythetubrat 3 года назад +1

      @@ronaldcook3840 Glad I could help.
      Two months later, all I've done since writing the review is a tire rotation and an oil change. I took it to the shop yesterday for the annual state safety inspection on my way down to Houston. Stopped at a random shop - looked like they handle common issues but not the sort of place that will be rebuilding/swapping out engines.
      After the inspection was done, when the older guy who I had been dealing with (wanna say - mid 50s, like me) drove my car back up front, I asked him "what do you think? Not bad for an 18 year old model, huh?"
      The guy said "Man, there's nothing wrong with this car. It's in great shape."
      I highly recommend old granny grocery/church chariots.
      Also do yourself a favor and pull the CarFax. The CarFax on mine showed every oil change going back to 2003. All of the previous owners had taken the car to the Ford shop to have those done. They reported to whatever databases CarFax scrapes.
      Also, my father was looking at a nice one up in Arkansas. He got the VIN and the CarFax showed the car had been wrecked in 2011. Looked like the front end was rebuilt, the instrument cluster replaced with one from a lower mileage TC, and the title showed a mileage inconsistency. The guy trying to sell it to my father ten years later was touting it as a low mileage, well-maintained Lincoln Town Car.

    Wonderful vehicle. It says something when Saudi Princes, mob bosses, and famous celebrities prefer these over million dollar Mercedes, Rolls Royce, etc.
    Town cars may not be superior, but they are far more affordable and in many cases; far more RELIABLE.

    I have a 2002 Town Car, and the exterior color looks exactly like yours, except mine has a full black cloth diamond edition roof. The color on mine is "light parchment gold clear coat metallic."
    I bought my car in 2007, and paid $11,750 for it. It had 36k miles then, now it has 110k miles. In the 14 years that I have had it, the only time it let me down was a dead battery.
    I did have to replace the rear air ride suspension with a set of coil springs in 2015, which is a common problem on these cars.
    In 2019, I had to replace the upper and lower ball joints, the idler arm, the front sway bar, and shock absorbers.
    Another common problem on these cars is the hard plastic intake manifold that they used. So far, mine has not leaked.

    As an owner of a 2006 Signature Limited Presidential (carriage roof), I would recommend the 1998 - 2002 over the later 2003 - 2011 models. Your generation has a smoother ride and more comfortable seats. When they went to the rack and pinion steering in 2003 they changed the front suspension and lost ~ 2” of wheel travel. The 2010 and 2011 deleted the rear air suspension - both of these changes lost the cloud like ride they were famous for. The 2003 and up have genuinely uncomfortable front seats with an unnatural seat back curve - a good upholstery shop can fix this. Every single year from 2004 and up saw some cheapening of the TC - it’s almost like it was sabotaged on purpose. I know that is not true, that Ford was in a weak financial period at the time of the last generation of TC and that it suffered in the process. The shame is that instead of cheapening it and forcing loyal buyers to shop elsewhere, with just a few fixes it would have been awesome

      I don’t know what the market place is like in your area for used car values. How much are they asking? If you do not have a lot of experience with cars then I would recommend having a professional mechanic evaluate it for condition and what it will need in repairs, then deduct that from the full market value. Hopefully it is a non-smoker car that has been garaged. Best wishes

    • @jocojoco3456
      @jocojoco3456 3 года назад

      The price they are asking is $5,000. Superb condition, looks like new on the inside, 35,000 miles only so practically a new car, but still 19 years old in a few months.

    • @Thomas63r2
      @Thomas63r2 3 года назад

      @@jocojoco3456 You can't generally buy much of a used car for $5,000 these days, sounds like a decent deal actually. Here are the common problem on very low mileage cars that have sat unused for long periods of time: the brake fluid is shot and sometimes leaking from rotting rubber parts (there are three rubber brake line hoses). The cooling system hoses may need replacing, and usually the tires have aged out and have dry rot. So with new tires and hose replacements you should be good to go.

    • @luxurreview
      @luxurreview  3 года назад +1

      Exactly!! That’s why I chose this generation! Simple things like the window switches were plastic instead of chrome, most 03-11 Town Cars door pull is pealing of the end cap has popped off, and of course the ride suffered.

That car saved me from serious injury I believe. I miss my 2001 Town Car. I've had luxury Lexus vehicles and Mercedes but prefer the Town Car because it floats down the road, the cops think you're 90 years old so they don't notice you and it's inexpensive to buy and maintain and gets relatively good gas mileage. Good purchase. I will buy another one if Jesus doesn't get us out of here soon.
