    This car is magnificent -- an absolute classic. Man, I wish they still made cars like this. A few minor upgrades is all it needs. Put a modern Ford 5-liter V8 under the hood, with a six-speed automatic transmission, and it would still sell like hotcakes!

      Modern car engines are ticking time bombs. They want cars to fail so people are forced to buy new.
      That anemic old V8 might have been extraordinarily underpowered even when it was new but they are known to last 250k miles with mediocre maintenance and over 400k with good maintenance... That engine puts any Japanese car to shame probably because they knew their market for the engine (police and livery use).

      I consider anything made in the 2000's to be a modern car. Cars in general changed a lot more going from the 80's to the 90's than from the 90's to the 00's. For the last decade it's just been about engineering them to fail under the guise of 'innovative technology' and ever worse construction quality all around. "The Town Car is body-on-frame... which is an old-school way of constructing cars you just don't see anymore, except for full-size pickups and some large SUVs." Yes, it creates a strong, solid, and extremely durable vehicle, hence why modern rugged vehicles use it and, as you cite later, is what gives this vehicle the ability to go hundreds of thousands of miles even under the heavy use and abuse of large city livery services.
    You also mention they didn't upgrade it over the years, expecting it to go out. I'd argue it actually went out because of lack of upgrades. From 1998-2011, it received very little treatment and the engine in 2011 was still lower in performance than a Cadillac Fleetwood from 1994. Have Mercedes or BMW not change or upgrade one of their models for over a decade and see how well their sales go. I think Lincoln wanted to phase out the Town Car, not its customers, so it could phase in cheaper, yet more modern, construction.

    • @gregorsamsa1364
      @gregorsamsa1364 2 года назад +9

      No, the customers were drying up(or, more accurately, dying off). The vast majority of panther platform sales at that point were police cars and livery vehicles, but even those sales were drying up. Continuing the platform would have been a disastrous move, especially with all the money they would've thrown away on getting the 30-something year old platform to keep up with changing fuel-economy, emissions, and safety regulations.
      It was the longest running platform of any American auto maker ever- it was time to retire it. But they were fantastic vehicles

      Do you want to know why the Lincoln Town Car only has 224 HP? Do you know why? Because the elderly do not need more than this power!!! What silly and stupid excuses!! Lexus Ls and Mercedes S Class, most of their owners in the nineties were rich and elderly, but did this prevent them from putting a powerful engine in their cars!!! They will tell you that because of the low sales and high demand for 4×4 cars, is this the stupid reason that prevented them from installing a powerful engine, new transmission and improved suspension in the year 1990-2003 ?????

      And NONE of these people had taken a compass with them. They managed to use the maps the right way without ever feeling the need to have a compass. Maybe we have better road signs here, that could be the reason why nobody uses a compass for analogue paper map navigation over here.

    I've recently found this channel and it's really interesting how things like the gauges and the size of the buttons can clue you into the target market for any given car. These are things I never would have thought about, but it makes sense given the Town Car is mainly aimed at older people. I'm not really a "car guy" so learning about all these little touches is fascinating to me.

    I happen to love this car and I've heard such wonderful things about them , I think it's very cool and it's extremely roomy and comfortable, I also appreciate that it's proven rear wheel drive and built very strong , I'm buying one tomorrow for only 4 grand so for me it's a bargain , also the styling of this car really grows on you from the waterfall grill to the beautiful round big red tail lights the 03 on was more beautiful than the earlier models , I test drove one and found that the v8 had plenty of power for me so I think you might have gave this car too low of scoring but that's just my opinion , for comfort stability and reliability I don't think you can go wrong with one of these if you find one in good shape , I noticed the car you reviewed had 460,000 miles on it , that's amazing, thanks Doug as always your reviews are very informative and entertaining to watch , keep up the good work

One of the few things Doug doesn't mention about these cars is that you CAN find super nice, low mileage examples for less than a third of the original sticker price! Mine cost MUCH less than any entry level sub-compact car today and it will likely last me for the next 20+ years. And yes, it's every bit as enjoyable, comfortable, SMOOTH and reliable to drive as Doug mentioned. Sporty? Nope! But everyone who rides in it is amazed how comfy it is! :-)

      Getting something signed usually is a souvenir, something to remember the moment you met some celebrity in public by and show to your friends to prove to them that you actually did meet that person. Buying a signed picture and receiving it by mail, doesn't even do that.
      I like Doug and this channel and I'm not one of those guys who only seem to be here to write "Doug, the type of guy..."-comments, but the idea to buy such a photograph is a pretty bizarre notion and I think only a small number of weirdos are likely to consider something like that.
