Quick history lesson: I have been into the auto sales for over 30 years. The Lincoln Pickup is now the Ford F-150 Platinum. Ford learned that it's customers did not want to go to two dealerships "Ford & Lincoln" to shop basically the same truck. Ford launched a luxury trim for it's trucks and SUV's in the 1980's called the Eddie Bauer trim. Some of us remember the rich kids having Eddie Bauer backpacks in school. Anyway, all of us laughed "including me" at the idea of a luxury trim truck. It turned out to be successful and most of us remember O.J. Simpsons white Eddie Bauer Bronco. GM took notice and started the Denali trim for it's SUV's. Ford then took it a step further with the King Ranch and Harley Davidson trims. Ford also went further with the Lincoln Blackwood but it was replaced with the Lincoln Mark LT. Ford realized that they were missing out on a lot of sales and learned that it would be more profitable to offer the Lincoln truck in a F-150 trim, so it became the Platinum. GM truck customers would come into the dealerships looking for luxury trim pickup truck so GM finally built a Denali pickup. Now, everyone including the Tundra and Titan offers a luxury trim pickup truck and the rest is history.
If someone breaks into the tonneau cover by using the key access port manual lever, and they have no key, that person is no regular thief. Also he deserves the truck, just give it to him. Blackwoods are and will always be an F-150 with a snobby attitude.
yep considering that anything over 150 pounds in south Korea is heavy for men there (I live in South Korea lol) (edit: I think this is true with most other Asian countries lmao)
I saw one today in the parking lot of the local Publix in St Augustine Florida. It looked just like a 2002 Lincoln Blackwood with wide whitewall tires. I liked it when it came out and like it even more now. The gentleman who was driving it told me he'd owned it since new and it had 220,000 miles on the original 5L engine. They only built about 3400 of them and it's both a Lincoln and a usable pickup truck (as long as you don't expect it to function as an actual pickup truck). For someone who enjoys rare vehicles, doesn't want to help people move stuff and has a sense of humor, it's a perfect fit. If I can find one for less than $5k, it will be mine!
People gotta remember this GPS is from the era when you would physically print out directions from MapQuest to get where you wanted to go. So, yea, this was great to get directions on the fly.
When i heard his rambling about the nav system I thought "dude this was the shit back then". The nav system in my 99 E46 was a monochrome display with arrows on it!
Mapquest fucking lies. That’s why no one today uses them. It’s like it randomly would put a pinpoint wherever it felt like. You were lucky if got you within the same block or two (forget which side of the street). Back in those dark ages, your outdated nonY2K compliant mapsco book was more reliable. You just needed to know the address. Look up the street on the index, pick the town, look up the page and grid number, and you were more or less on your way. No folding required.
@@matthewtuel2747 by that time other state cities were offered, but yes, the majority of cities had to figure out things the hard way. I recall a trip I made to CA in 2001, where on two separate occasions, I got out of my car, walked into a business, and physically talked to a human, asking them for directions. Such crazy times! All the pics I took on that trip had to be taken to a store, developed, picked up, paid for, and then scanned one by one. Such archaic chaos!
The Flex was a great car. Tons of tech packed into the one I had. And it was quick with the EcoBoost! Very comfortable seats, decently roomy. Kind of miss mine. I wonder why it didn't sell better?

That bed makes a lot of sense to me. I was on the market for a truck last year. I liked the Ram 1500 and ordered the cheapest one. With shortages making it impossible to get ANY truck from any brand, I started to look elsewhere. So my dealer had a very nice, brand new Ram 1500 Limited for way over what I wanted to spend. But since it was literally the only truck available, and again, it is VERY nice, I convinced myself that I would make it work. Fast forward a few months and I realized that having such a nice truck, while incredibly comfortable, changes your whole approach for the way you can want to use it. I didn't want to take it offroading in fear of scratching the chrome and nice wheels, and I was way over cautious of what I throw in the back in fear of denting anything. So the Blackwood's bed/trunk makes sense to me. It has a huge amount of usable trunk, so you can put a lot of stuff there. Probably golf clubs or nice luggage. And you get another work truck for work purposes. It does makes sense.
The Blackwood always reminded me of that Schwarzenegger movie Twins: they were attempting to fuse the best qualities of an F-150 and Town Car, but ended up with Danny Devito
"We've done some market research: many people who own toilets also own washing machines. So, gentlemen, my team combined both those appliances! Why should we, the Whirlpool corporation, miss out on that market share those bastards at Kohler have been hogging for decades?"
I have to say, for the letters Blackwood not being spaced evenly across the tailgate they did an amazing job concealing that fact. It is really difficult to see where they made up that space (the letters in WOOD are spaced farther apart, but still smart to keep the syllables/words broken apart as BLACK WOOD).
I've only seen two of those. One was being used by a funeral home as their "flower car" and the other was in daily use by a lawn care company that catered to high end, gated communities. Both trucks were apparently in excellent condition the last time I saw them (both in Maryland) in late 2018. I should also point out that over the years I have seen far more of the Caddy pickups still in use even today often as daily drivers. Of course I can say the same for the Chevy versions for that matter.
2002 was my first year at Ford HQ. Here’s the unconfirmed internal story I was told re how the Blackwood was born. In those days, Ford had a multi-day program for its hundreds of annual new hires from every department (e.g., engineering, finance, IT, legal, etc.) called New Employee Orientation (NEO). A fun part of NEO (most of it was B-O-R-I-N-G) was breaking into small teams and designing a new vehicle (my teamed designed a Lincoln LS station wagon) and then giving a brief presentation about your creation to all of the other teams, NEO leaders, and at least one member of the Ford vehicle design team. According to our NEO leaders that year, the most famous moment in NEO history was when a random team stunned everyone-but especially the Ford vehicle design team-with the presentation of their brilliant idea for a special edition of Ford’s best-selling F-150 truck, which they called the “F-150 Harley-Davidson”. As the story was told to us, that random team of new employees from multiple departments were immediately rushed from the room and tasked with pitching their shocking why-had-no-one-thought of-this-before idea to a quickly-assembled group of Ford designers and executives. The Blackwood, we were told, was just the latest attempt by Ford (Lincoln) to further expand the market for its best-selling vehicle, the F-150, as inspired by that greatest moment in NEO history.

The Blackwood is a glorified F-150 that I wanted as a kid for some reason. Its like an old $2 bill, unique and uncommon but not necessarily rare and potentially worth more than it should be to the right person.
Great video, although as a former SSR owner feeling a bit miffed on the trunk... The SSR took this to the next level as far as trunk carpeting and saddle bags. Fully carpeted trunk and carpet on the underside of the cover with logos and plastic fake-wood slits, tracks for accessories, grocery-getter style net, and best of all, saddle bags on either side that had a separate key to lock them. Totally stupid in most use cases but I think that rivals the Blackwood's Trunk for quirkiness.
@RxBST yikes... yeah I just did some research 10-15k for a CLEAN one with 100k miles. Thats gonna be a hard pass on that American made piece of junk. They will probably never sell at that price. Highest I would go is $7k

Whoa, how'd the Flex get thrown in with those other monstrosities at 1:32 ? That thing was utilitarian-sleek, immensely functional, and the turbocharged version was a flying brick
im not into trucks really, but now i really want this this. its a perfect mix between a car and a truck, even better than the el camino. i love the trunk bed, it seems like it would be perfect for camping too, throw a tarp over it while its open and you have a tent you can sit up in, with a clean carpet floor. you can also do some small electrical tweaks and additions and have a perfect camping spot.
@Hi And Bye all these people buying a 4 door F-150, then put a hard cover over the bed, is literally no different (other then the payload).... Trucks have become a status symbol, and not the work horse they use to be.
I owned one of these and loved it GMC Envoy SUV. You could put the bed roof back, and the slide the rear window to the bed down, and with sun roof open and all windows open it felt like a convertible. It also had a tent option for the back bed with matress that would turn some heads at campsites.
I LOVE my envoy XUV. It’s a weird truck, SUV, convertible, four wheel drive optional, good gas mileage, very reliable, nice leather interior with heated seats and such kinds vehicle.
The flex is massively under rated, the cargo space in the room is awesome . I've easily put eight and 12 hour drives in it and it was always fine of course typical Ford they always seem to cheap out in the oddest places. Till this day I can always hear one start up in a parking lot and recognize it
Tbh. Lincoln was actively ahead of their time with this truck. More and more people buy trucks in the luxury trims now a days vs 20 years ago when this came out. and a lot of them never use em for real hard work. This thing may actually be a hit if it was reintroduced into the market today.
I came across market research that showed a lot of families are now buying full-sized pickups like the F-150 as the family car. Like instead of a minivan or a SUV. So having luxury trims makes a lot of sense. And I agree, the Blackwood deserves credit for being ahead of its time, basically being the proof of concept that a luxury truck can be a thing.
Simply giving it the F150's 4x4 system would have improved its fate dramatically I think, but I also think Ford launched this too late... By 2002 the Navigator was in its last year and had already been on the market since '98, and this still had that model's front clip and interior.
I think as a big picture concept to make something for people who make a lot of money but need/want a pickup truck still they had a golden idea, but this is like literally the worst way they could have executed it lmao
@@dennied7826 I think that non-removable tonneau cover, along with the carpeted and stainless steel-trimmed bed, was part of the whole concept of the Blackwood, so not sure how much removing any of those novelties would have helped or hurt sales (although a fixed manual tonneau cover would likely have been fine by "luxury pickup" consumers back in 2002), but not offering 4x4 certainly hurt them.

Shortly after I watched this video the first time a couple months ago, I actually saw one of these in the town over! Just sitting in the driveway, of a house just outside city limits. I believe it’s still there. Felt weird seeing such a rare car so close to where I live.
In February of 2005 I was a junior in college in rural Michigan, and was walking through the off-campus apartment complex where I lived. I was a couple buildings away from mine, and and elderly man with no shirt on was outside and appeared to be in some distress. I felt that I couldn't ignore this man, as it was 25 degrees outside, and he was older, and had no shirt, so I stopped to ask him if he needed help. He said he did, and that there was an emergency in his apartment. Thinking his wife was having a stroke or some other awful thing was happening, I followed him into his building, and into his apartment. There he informed me that he needed a young man with a pretty face to help him don his cashmere sweater. It was then that I realized I had been duped. After offering me a drink at 10 in the morning, and a series of non-sensical rants about things I've long forgotten, I managed to leave and get to class. Several days later, I saw the man again, this time behind the wheel of a Lincoln Blackwood.

Now I really want to see Doug review the 2nd generation Lincoln Navigator. Particularly the top of the line, end of the generation '06 Luxury/Ultimate package. I picked up one of those a couple years ago for between 5 and 6 grand, and I can really see how the Blackwood is very much like a stepping stone between the 1st and 2nd generation of Navigator. It's like they demo'd some of the tech in the Blackwood, and also learned some things about body styling and what people actually want in a luxury vehicle. I believe the only parts on the 2nd generation Navigator that are shared with its Ford counterpart are something along the lines of the 2nd row door panels. And that's it. Well, there are under the hood parts that are shared, but interior and exterior parts that can be seen are pretty much all specific to the Navigator. Not only that, but the 2nd gen Navigator interior harkens back to the '61 Lincoln Continental interior, somewhat mirroring the dash setup.
Back in 2006 I was in the market for a truck..I almost bought a Blackwood. Test drove one. I wound up buying a new Silverado instead. This truck was just way ahead of its time.
Wait a minute... was this a used Blackwood that you almost bought? Because the Blackwood was only made for the 2002 model year. Are you sure this wasn't actually a then-new 2006 Lincoln MARK LT that you test drove? Anyway, what made you choose a Chevy Silverado instead of the GMC Sierra? Starting with the 1999 model year, the Silverado and Sierra were no longer completely identical (but there really was NO difference between the 1988 to 1998 CK/Silverado and Sierra except for the Sierra not having the Chevy chrome bar on the grill... and in fact both Chevy and GMC made a Suburban in those days!) but I must say I think of Chevy trucks as always having been a step down from GMC trucks, and I never really understood why Chevy trucks needed to exist at all because GMC exists!

I second this.
I remember these in 02, I bought a brand new 02 Chevy Silverado I payed 26k, this truck cost double! Also I still own this truck it has 117,000 miles, check engine light has never came on, has original alternator and belts, all ways garaged zero rust, stickers are still on the frame and still looks new but I’m finally gonna sell it and get a 2024 GMC Canyon AT4 4x4 ,, I love this new GMC, LOL I buy a new truck every 21 years!
We had a 2005 Excursion Eddie Bauer and it was a solid road trip vehicle.
Awesome history lesson. Thanks!
Thank you for this! Makes a lot of sense honestly

Mapquest fucking lies. That’s why no one today uses them. It’s like it randomly would put a pinpoint wherever it felt like.

I have to say, for the letters Blackwood not being spaced evenly across the tailgate they did an amazing job concealing that fact. Hahahaha I was thinking the same thing

It feels like they got a lot of little things right and then completely whiffed the big picture.
@@Stressless2023 4x4 and if the bed cover was removable would be two huge improvements

There were 7 million Americans, 3 months delinquent on their car payment in Q4 of 2018. Americans had $1.3 trillion in auto loan debt in 2019. The economy was booming in 2018 and 2019, and unemployment was historically low. Nothing changes if nothing changes.
The Chevy SS.
I owned a Blackwood in 2006 ND 2008. I totally loved it. With auto leveling air bags, it was an excellent tow vehicle. BTW, that was not a stock F-150. In addition to other changes, it used the steering rack from the Crown Vic Police Intercepter.
@Terry hello,how are you doing
I think it would sell in today's market. People are paying south of 100k for massive trucks and they never haul anything or go off road. This truck was ahead of its time.
“Ah yes, softer, softer, softer, what an wonderful thing to program the female voice in the navigation system to say. Lincoln really knew how to class it up” 😂 😂 😂
It should have massaging seats
Volume up should be "harder". Press it repeatedly and people will wonder whats going on in that truck!
😂😂😂
Best part of the video is how happy Doug is. Makes the whole video just that much better
Doug’s the type of guy to ask the owner to lock him in the trunk so he can pull the special lever
I would do that
It honestly seems like the Blackwood was ahead of its time and only had a few questionable decisions (i.e. minor payload, RWD, etc). I'm very curious how much the F-150 Platinum and the King Ranch trim levels were influenced by Lincoln's attempt here.
Probably not much since it was based on the Ranger and also Lincoln had the Mark LT which was a rebadged F-150
@@David_Larkin Ah, good to know! This is definitely an automotive segment I'm not terribly knowledgeable of.
@@xara505 That's ok, not everyone can know everything 😉
