    I bought a 2003 Lincoln Town Car with 83,000 original miles. I was trying to find a video on spare tire remove/replace . I have been surprise how many people have commented on the smooth ride the car has. I hadn't driven much in recent years, but I drove it to Tennessee recently. I couldn't believe how quickly I made the trip. Absolutely no fatigue when arrived

    17 Year old rear suspension air bags; the air pump and controllers cost a bundle if rubber and etc. worn out. That would be the first thing I would check on these Town Cars. Not even mentioned in this article.

  • @encinobalboa

    Year 2003 specific issues are rear axles which wear prematurely because the housing metal is too soft. This was corrected for 2004. Also the 4.6 heads have half thread count for spark plugs.compared to later heads. This can cause spark plug blow out. IIRC, 2003 also had plastic timing chain guides which wear out prematurely. Many were updated by the dealer. Look for marks on the front of the valve covers which indicates the update was done. Town Cars are gently driven so these are not too much of an issue...unlike CVPI's.

      It's my mom's. She wrecked her LHS over the summer and she just got this beast. I did just buy me something similar to this Lincoln to use as a spare in case the BMW goes dows or Katie's Neon bites the dust. Now I can move the Corvette out of the city and to Jefferson County where it's safe from the fellas. I currently have the Camaro in my buddy's garage for the winter. That garage sees no sunlight inside and is so well-insulated it stays 50 degrees in there.

    I have a 2003 Town Car with right at 100k on the odometer. They are very nice cars. Handles bumps in the road like a dream. There are three issues I have with them. The worst is the braking. I replaced all the rotors and pads and had the old fluid flushed but she still needs some distance to stop. Another strange thing is body roll. If your coming up to a curve on the highway your best to stay to the inside of your lane at first and start with a gentle turn. When you feel the suspension load you can tighten your turn. If you don’t ease into it it just feels a little squirrelly. The last annoying thing is the delay shifting from drive to reverse. I live on a well traveled road and like to back into the drive. The lag in shifting makes this more challenging. I will offer two other heads up. If you do your own repairs, change the stabilizer links before they get crusty. There is no easy way to keep them from spinning as you remove the nut so you don’t want the nut to be rusted on there. Buy Moog brand and they will have a provision to hold the shaft with a wrench as you take the nut off. The other dumb thing is it’s hard to find a replacement bulb for the dash clock. They exist but I don’t have a part number or vendor to offer up. As already mentioned there are water problems with the cabin air intake seal, rear axles, and windshield wiper module as well as the wiper/blinker control lever.

      I was just gonna replace all the rotors and pads because of the braking and also change the axles and motor mounts because of the gear shifting you were saying but idk if to even do it now since it will stay the same but honestly I might just do it just because is almost 20years old

    • @jimshort9266
      @jimshort9266 4 года назад +1

      Ponchiii M ... I’m guessing that the delay in shifting is in the electronics. I haven’t investigated it but I don’t think shifters are linked to the transmissions anymore. I think they use control modules to detect the shifter position and actuate the shift in the tranny. Again, I don’t know this for sure. I did have to the driver side axle replaced. My mechanic just sorced it from a junk yard. I don’t know if there is a better version of the axle available or if it’s just something to live with.

      Jim Short thanks and I just noticed on my Lincoln if I step the brake all the way and then shift it doesn’t shift as bad if I don’t brake all the way down but yeah iguess ima just have to get used to the braking part but also they already squeaking soo ima just do everything at once just to see if it works or not but I like how smooth they are it is how people really say if your riding in clouds Ima make sure mine runs as much as it can before I gotta buy another one

    Ever had an issue with the notorious ghost acceleration? I just bought an 03 and I've had it twice in a week! It happened to me at very low speeds, braking, and both times the tires were wet (rain, and right after a car wash). It's crazy. I mashed the brake but the engine actually races. I've found dozens of complaints about this and I think there's even a class-action suit open over it.

    • @HollywoodHornet
      @HollywoodHornet  Год назад

      Not with the TC but a couple months ago my P71 started doing that. It was idling so fast I could go 40+mph without even touching the gas pedal. It was insane. I replaced the TPS and that fixed. Just prior to it doing that I replaced the intake manifold because it cracked and leaked coolant everywhere. I think the TPS was just a coincidence. I don't think the new intake manifold caused the issue

    • @daveygivens735
      @daveygivens735 Год назад

      @@HollywoodHornet Thanks for the quick reply. -Yes, I don't think its limited to the TC, I think it's an issue with all(many) Panthers. Speculation points to a coding problem and the discussion is to compel a recall to fix but so far Ford's not responding. Very odd, as prolific as the Panther platform is you'd think Ford would address. In my case with the wet tires, I'm looking hard at the ABS. Cheers.

  • @donaldvincent

    Make sure your 2003 Panther Chassis has had the rear axle's replaced. There is a TSB about this issue. Fleet vehicles were recalled but us civilian owners were left out to dry. (Thanks Ford).

      Oh, snap. I was unaware of this. I'll have to research the issue.

    • @donaldvincent
      @donaldvincent 4 года назад +1

      @@HollywoodHornet When you have this repair done make certain they replace the entire axle housing with one from a junk yard from a different year. I had ours repaired four times at four shops. They were just ordering 2003 axles that had been sold into the aftermarket by Ford. , The axles were hardend incorrectly and are too soft. They wear and then your bearings grind away until the seals leak. Swapped out with a 2005 and no more issues. I have owned over 20 cars and never had a rear axle bearing go bad before this one. Btw: I currently own the 03 Cartier in silver, a 2004 Ultimate in white, and a 08 Signature L in gold.
      The only other issue was 03 and prior had a plastic coolant cross tube that would crack.

    • @donaldvincent
      @donaldvincent 4 года назад

      @Shawn Kemp the water in the floor is a ten dollar repair that takes 15 minutes. After 2003 the intakes were modified with a metal cool as my tube. I have the original intakes on my 2004 and 2008. As long as you get a 2004 or newer you should have no issues if it has been well maintained. Remember, these were designed and built for fleet usage. The only better car I know of is Toyota. European's cost too much to repair and even Nissan quality has gone to hell. Honda used to be great but their automatic transmissions are no good and cost a fortune to fix.

    • @donaldvincent
      @donaldvincent 4 года назад +1

      @Shawn Kemp Yes the long wheel base is very roomy. The only other issue is the air ride suspension. They get expensive as. They get older. I have changed all of mine to regular Springs. The wife helped me do it and it only took about 20 minutes and cost about 80 dollars. They ride the same but if you over stuff the trunk it will sit lower. The air ride would keep it level is the only difference.

    • @SnownelVEVO
      @SnownelVEVO 3 года назад

      @@donaldvincent Air suspension isn't a huge problem. The whole kit is like $500, cheaper if you just have to replace the compressor or bags separately. Nowhere near as expensive as a Mercedes. And the ride is definitely not the same, especially when the trunk is loaded up or you've got a couple of fat fucks like me in the back seat. If it were, why would Ford have offered it in the first place?
