  • Covered In Rain is the original grail "John Mayer Guitar Tone", and thanks to some incredible footage we get a unique and rare listen to it from the perspective of the audience, unlike all of the professionally shot, mixed, and post edited ones we are used to from this era.

What are you talking about Justin? Guitar face is a BIG part of Mayer's tone!

His sound back then resembled SRV's tone a lot more!

I was fortunate enough to catch JM do City Love and Covered and Rain back to back at Irving Plaza in NYC in February of 2002. Yes, it was life changing. Coolest NYC moment I've ever experienced. Thanks for sharing this, Justin!

This is proof that so much of guitar tone is in how you actually play the guitar: whereabouts you position your pick relative to the pickups, how hard you hit the strings, which type of pick you use, how you move the strings with your left hand etc. I'd estimate all this as roughly 95% of the overall sound (unless you use gear meant for a completely different sound - mesa boogie with a maxed out RAT etc). Great news is that you can sound like JM without spending shitloads on gear if you practice a lot. Bad news is that you have to practice a lot.
