@landlord21 Im afraid you have no idea what you are talking about. Not only have his screams gotten more powerful and controlled, but his singing has well. So his voice has just been improving, and you can thank good technique for that.
@iamrichlol Its not an electronic kit, its Matt's Mapex Saturn Series, the one he uses live. It was recorded at Alex Markides's house since we practice there (He's our soundguy) and he mixed it all so it would sound good, but there are obviously no edits or samples, its just a quick lil practice vid haha.
damn. that sounded almost exactly like the album. Not many bands can recreate their album sound that perfectly, takes so much talent. Periphery is amazing
@@Panda_SMM I discovered P 10 months ago, just stumbled upon the Atropos hypnotizing video. I am going backwards, and I think that "Fck, P2 is crazy good, too" (Muramasa is the 2nd best album start ever*) P1, I do not know, Spencer just hatched back then :-) * 1st first song is Keep Yourself Alive by Queen :-) Disclaimer: I barely listen anything else nowadays, I still have "the what is happening in this song?" feeling :-)
@Wast3dsacrafice I dont think he has had trouble with losing lugs or anything, his heads are super lose though, and he doesnt put anything in the bass drum either (but that mapex kick sounds INSANE so it doesnt need any kind of muffling)
This song is so fucking athletic. I can only get through 2/3 of it before I start playing so sloppy you'd think I hadn't been learning since I was little haha.
well the dont really practice like this anymore. misha did a live stream of it recently and it was just him, mark, jake and matt, and they all used in ears so you could only hear drums. Nolly doesnt really have to pracctice the material anymore since he no longer tours with them, plus they all live in different places now. I think Misha is the only one who still lives in DC
@blobliblo35 Exactly, we have always done what pleases us because we will never be able to please everyone. If people dig it, then awesome, but why would we listen to someone else over what we want to do. If we wanted to be instrumental, we would have been, but some dude with an opinion will not change what we want to do with our music.
It's nice to see a band that actually pays attention to the drummer. Usually, he just sits in the back, pretty much forgotten except for when the bassist gets close enough to show them both in the shot.
I saw you guys a bit ago, back when yo came to GA for the Frak the gods tour. Spencer has improved. He was really good when I saw periphery :D you guys will always be my favorite band \m/
@XeroJager I broke a string on the rico earlier at practice, and normally it is my main guitar, that ibanez kinda blows haha but it was all I had there...
just got hip to you guys from a friend. awesome music. haven't pursued a full-time band in about 3 years (deployments), but now i'm itchin' for it. great post... cheers!\m/
Actually most if not all of the lyrics and vocal melodies were done before Spencer even joined, they kicked their previous vocalist, Chris Barretto because of his lazy work ethic at the time, and some of the songs like Icarus Lives and the Walk had earlier versions from other vocalists/singers like Jake Veredika and Casey Sabol. Because of the short time period between release and Spencer's recruitment, Spencer really only brought his vocal tone to the table.
spencer was a pertty good vocalist when he started out, but now he's like a friggin powerhouse. He has come a hell of a long way, along with the whole band.
My God...the musicianship, the details..... Oh man!!!! All I can say is that I hope the second album (well all the way until the 20th album) is of the same standard as the first and not a 180 degree turn
@1S0AR I just watched these guys play at Trees in Dallas this past Friday, the sound quality these guys pull off is incredible live. It's amazing what these guys do with some know how and all the equipment they could ever use lol
@Chrono0210 yes i recorded the audio. its barely mixed. just thrown together so they can hear themselves.. but they thought you guys should hear. it was recorded on pro tools le 9.
@BorisGaquere i recorded the audio on Pro Tools LE 9. barely mixed, no edits or redos. just straight practice.i was also recording video. on iPod Touch 4th Gen.
@butterknucklez Based on the fact that Misha referred to a "sound guy" and the fact that you can see the drum mics I would say a series of mics on the drums and cabs hooked up to a mixer. Generally how one records live audio...
@iamrichlol Yeah it was direct into a soundboard for sure. I believe it's actually sitting behind Halpern on that rackmounted guitar rig. However, the drums were definitely naturally miked drums, not the electronic kit. You can actually see a couple of the mics around the kit. But yeah, more videos like this would be siiiick.
@IronGuitarist Its just setup terribly and the strings are at least 3 years old, im sure if it got a little TLC it would be good! Oh and it needs a TremolNo haha!
@Kwontarded Im not quite sure you are using the word "subsidiary" in the appropriate manner there. On top of that the cymbals dont say "AA" they say "M" as in "Meinl" as in the brand of cymbals Matt plays haha!
@Crazyfishyyy Except that 90% of people online dont say that, and we have been extremely fortunate to get lots of awesome tours. Our last tour was a surprisingly successful Headlining tour and our next tour is a European Tour with Dream Theater. So even from that point of view we obviously we need to keep doing what we are doing. To recap: you have no idea what you are talking about, and what you say holds no weight whatsoever because you are basing it on youtube comments and not reality.
@Periphery So honestly, it's artists like you that really help me to keep pushing things the way I want to push them. Despite me being a World Fusion artist who actually uses metal as my inspiration lol.
@asyluminhouse it isnt camera sound, youll find the video was mixed with direct recordings. you can hear reverb on the vocals, and the fact that its an electronic kit / 3 axe fxs suggests direct recording to a computer
i used to love mike portnoy being a bassist and such. for 5 years i felt like a fangirl for him. weird how it all changed when i saw periphery then i saw matt halpern. overall i loved progg, but was in to heavy heavy stuff and never found something like... heavy and prog enough for my taste. periphery is like my perfect band that came outta nowhere, when i least expected it
@landlord21 Im afraid you have no idea what you are talking about. Not only have his screams gotten more powerful and controlled, but his singing has well. So his voice has just been improving, and you can thank good technique for that.
Matt is always so on-point, it's insane.
Ryan Sparrell he never goes out of time not once in anything he does its insane !
That's what's funny, I actually caught a small mistake in this video. First time for everything!
@@HugoStiglitz88 There’s always that the one person

It is my dream to have a band practise this good
Seeing this shows how much they've evolved. Just wow.
Seems like they made it to the ceiling already to me. This is totally on point and they make it seem so effortless.
I just like how its everyone staring a Spencer.
This is still such a treat to watch. Every member is super tight individually, and their chemistry as a band is truly insane
damn. that sounded almost exactly like the album. Not many bands can recreate their album sound that perfectly, takes so much talent. Periphery is amazing
Seeing periphery do the local band thing of "big ending 32nd notes for 8 bars" is so funny
A lot of pro bands still do it. It works.
@Bruins8130 they are pretty much finger tightened, the bass drum is as well!
I personally think Spencer's voice is incredible. He's one of my favourite singers.
I would love to see/hear a reperformed version of their first album, it's so underrated now
don't think it's underrated, I always see people say p1 and p2 are their only good albums
@@Panda_SMM I discovered P 10 months ago, just stumbled upon the Atropos hypnotizing video. I am going backwards, and I think that "Fck, P2 is crazy good, too" (Muramasa is the 2nd best album start ever*)

I bet their neighbours love them.
Jordan Pankratz who wouldn't
their neighbours lol
So fake. Where's Matt's v-neck?
Ik
And matt playing remos? FAKE
ye bro, its clearly sped up

As amazing as all this is...Matt is the most amazing.
Holy shit this video is surreal, they all look so young 🤯
This song is so fucking athletic. I can only get through 2/3 of it before I start playing so sloppy you'd think I hadn't been learning since I was little haha.
Matt Halpern has this awesome flow when he plays... Just works so well.
@1S0AR haha thanks for the compliment dude, our sound guy would be very happy as he is the one who mixed the audio!
Halpern is my role model as a drummer. The way he plays both heavy and groovy at the same using a small kit is really inspiring.
$800 drums and $2500 worth of cymbals. Yep, he's a drummer alright.
*Prog drummer
Well... It's a lot easier to make cheaper drums sound good than to make cheaper cymbals sound good.
Expensive drums are just decorations. The sound comes from the heads interacting, the shell is almost irrelevant if the bearing edges are in tact
i love how matt halpern always uses just a floor tom. its just so gnarly
Love that finger tapping part! fav part of the album
i love it when drummers get really into what they are playing
i'd love to live close to you :D it must be so amazing to have a periphery concert around every other evening..
well the dont really practice like this anymore. misha did a live stream of it recently and it was just him, mark, jake and matt, and they all used in ears so you could only hear drums. @jareddent1 Haha i was just telling our soundguy the same thing, it doesnt sound quite as crashy in person, and it definitely rules live!
you guys NEED to make a live dvd, this almost sounded like album material, not many great bands can pull this off like you guys!
Jesus.. These guys are incredible.... i wish my band sounded like this.
It's nice to see a band that actually pays attention to the drummer. Usually, he just sits in the back, pretty much forgotten except for when the bassist gets close enough to show them both in the shot.
@vsaiz77 haha we save our energy for the live shows, it helps to have a good vibe goin you know?
Non-stop grind the whole way through, love it!
It's unreal to hear how much Spencer improved in the last 2 years, props to him!
10 years later this comment holds up.
@@myklelara11 months later, still evolving :-)

2:43 FUTURISTIC HEAVY PUNK! Love how different that sounds with only 1 extra snare beat between the notes.

why are people saying the vocals suck? they sound fine
