RAM 6.7L Grid Heater Bolt Failure Explained
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 ноя 2023
- Over time, a bolt in the 2007-current RAM 6.7L Cummins stock grid heater deteriorates, falls into the intake runner, and thanks to gravity, makes its way into cylinder #6. In many cases, this results in severe piston, valve, and head damage or total engine failure.
Learn why the problem occurs and how to prevent it.

The fact that this affects 2007- to CURRENT engines is inexcusable.
They know what they are doing and said Nahh. Your problem now.
@@25aspooner if the truck is under warranty when it lets go, doesn't Ram have to foot the bill? I would hope so. But, if they accepted culpability, that would mean they acknowledge it is a problem, and would have to pay for all that recall work on every diesel ram since 07. God forbid, and the executives will try as hard as they can to pay out as little as possible.
It's bad enough these trucks cost what they do, but to top it off, who tf knows if/when you'll need to do a $30k repair.
A lot of guys rely on their truck to make a living, either partly or entirely. How are they going to make those fat payments if the the truck goes down? Can they kick the working man while he's down any harder?
Cummins needs a law suit
Everyone who has had a problem should get a mass lawsuit lawyer and go after either dodge or cummins for the flaw and damages. They surely would re-engineer it after that.
This was a problem on the Cummins ISB engines that are in most box trucks. Cummins blamed International stating it was a relay on the body side. Bolt would break off and bounce into the intake and then into the cylinder. Denied hundreds of warrantys on Internarional trucks. Now its coming to light that it was indeea a Cummins issue.
Source - i worked for International.
How is this not a recall / class action lawsuit?
Recall Are For Safety And Emissions ONLY!!!!!
Auto Manufacturers Give A Warranty For ONLY So Long And After That They ARE NOT Required To Worry About Anything!!!
Guess What? Auto Manufacturer's Want You To Buy A New Vehicle Every 10 Years!!! It's Their Job To Sell You A New Not Make Sure The One You Have Last FOREVER!!!!
These Are FACTS!!!
I love the Banks philosophy. Stick it to the OEMs by being better than them, and give everyone the information they need. Rock on 👍
Just bought a used 2016 Ram 2500 and figured I’d be putting one of these on. When the dealer called to say the truck showed up I went to get it. Opened the hood to see the previous owner had already installed the Banks intake!
This should be a complete recall with consequential damages covered. Class action suit when?
I have to say Banks has it covered I got the monster ram installed on my 5500 ram and all the thought that went into it is amassing.
I just replaced mine on a 2007.5 with a monster ram. My stud at the grid looked terrible. The typical bolt mentioned in this video looked fine.
Yea… just a tip. DO NOT “locate the grid heater bolt and wiggle it to see if it’s loose”. Also the solution is a grid heater delete, your Cummins will start just fine in the winter without it.
How’s that
@@toiletpaper5770 Because overtime the grid heater bolt basically corrodes over time and if you wiggle it you can brake small pieces or even the entire nut off and it will fall into your cylinder. Many people do a grid heater delete to combat this issue, and from personal experience these 6.7s start just fine in the winter
@@AngryyBeaverr I never would have thought (they start good in the winter)
@@toiletpaper5770 The do start just fine in the winter without the grid heater. Maybe in sub zero F temps it might be necessary or better to have it but not in 0+ F. I recommend the wiggle test to be sure it is okay then disconnect the relay that feeds it. I have never heard anyone mention corrosion as an issue, just overheating/melting of the bolt. I've not heard of anyone having a failure after disconnecting the relay, which would likely be the case if they were failing from corrosion too. I figure all the soot on the threads will keep the nut from spinning off even if it came loose.
It won't in cold climates.
That is so cool. Ever since i heard the jltv was using another chevy engine ive been worried now that i know its banks modified, im proud! Go banks! Go USA
230K miles on my 2012 Ram 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins (I've owned it since new) and having drove it for probably 20K of those miles and 10 years in North Dakota where it gets down to -35 degrees and that bolt is still just fine after inspecting it.
60K miles, and we're searching for the bolt here in California.
Gale banks at it again! Go banks
I’m curious how well the new style coil heater works.
My son had this issue on a 2017 RAM.The warranty company tried to say the bolt wasn’t covered as part of the engine. He got the dealership to back him up and they sent out a factory Cummins rebuilt engine, good as new. His truck was in the shop 2 months in total but fortunately they gave him a loaner 2500 diesel so he could continue working with his junk removal business. He was only out of pocket the $100 deductible for a complete engine swap. Seems he fared a lot better than many by the sound of it.
The 12v "KDP" replaced by the 6.7 "KHB"?
MORE CONTENT! Where is the killing a duramax?
When’s that Derringer Tuner Cummins out!? 😏
Why has this not been a recall yet? I love my damn Cummings! Fix it my self
Why haven’t they recalled this????
The Banks part has to be approved by California carb and must have a California carb part number on it if not the Banks not legal to use in California
Ya'll have one for cab and chassis yet?
Ram and Cummins should contact banks and purchase 80,000 of these intake horns from banks and get them out to the owners!!!!!
Do a video show California carb part number approval
I have a 2016 5500 Cummins bought the monster Ram and was told it won't work on a 5500. I believe it can but what needs to be done?
Get a buddy and drink some beers
Happened to my friends truck over 8 years ago, 212,000 miles
They do for 2013-2018 and even for California but not earlier
Why has dodge not had a recall on this
Why doesn't Cummings use glow plugs like the Duramax and powerstroke
You mean Cummins?
Never mine the fire hazard 😅
The part has to be California carb approved got to have a carb part number on it
will this void your warrenty ?
I’ve been looking for that answer as well. Even my dealer is giving me conflicting answers.
Since it doesn't change any parameters of how engine runs it shouldn't but if they can find a way to void it to stick you with the bill for a new engine expect them to try.
All I saw is that they have to prove that this mod caused the failure of the part they are warranting. With that being said, if they do decide to deny it, you can cancel the extended warranty, and they will prorate it per year and give you your money back for the extended warranty. Examples: If you install this and have electronic issues with the radio, the radio should still be under warranty. If you have a 6in lift with warranty and front end bushings go out, don't expect them to warranty it. I just order it...I think with all this information I'll take my chances with warranty over a new engine or have them rebuild it.
According to the warranty booklet that came with your vehicle, the vehicle manufacturer can only deny warranty coverage if an aftermarket product causes a failure but makes no provision for denying warranty based on the mere presence of such a product. Nor is there a provision for a blanket voiding of warranty coverage. All of our products have been rigorously tested to ensure that a properly installed Banks product is 100% safe on the applications for which they are intended. We suggest that you consult with your dealers service advisor for more info and their stance on aftermarket performance accessories. If they voice concerns over the part that you're thinking about adding, find another service center. There are plenty of dealerships who value their customers and embrace Banks uprades.
Does this void the factory warranty
If you still have factory warranty, you don't have to worry about a catastrophic engine failure
Intakes that are CARB compliant don't void your warranty.
Yes it voids the warranty, call Ram...
One question regarding your "permanent fix" claim. Exactly how does this kit permanently fix/prevent a faulty grid heater relay from sticking on scenario and melting the Banks heating element down into your intake/engine?
I, myself, actually replace my grid heater relay as a preventative maintenance item. I find that they develop cracks in them and could possibly cause electrical gremlins.
Maybe a newly designed and more reliable failsafe grid heater relay by Banks could be something you could create.
The stock grid doesn't melt from the relay sticking on, the bolt used to conduct electricity does. The banks heating element doesn't have that weak point. That said, had they placed the element on the other side of the pipe, if it were to burn up, it wouldn't drop into the intake.
It doesn’t. Think about it, if the engine is running, which would be, then this is just a fancy looking paint job failure as well. When you are shorting metal to induce heat, then eventually all parts can fail. The best option would be no heater that spoofs computer into thinking it’s working. Trucks start fine without heat, but EPA wouldn’t all ow that. Buy what you want, this is same as factory with lipstick
@@wildeman7443you can get rid of the grid heater and retain emissions equipment.
If they designed it properly then it won't melt down even if its stuck "on" and the computer should still be throwing a fault code letting you know the heater is malfunctioning. If that is the case then you have to replace the solenoid that controls the heater switching on and off.
Don't touch the cable😮 Get shocked??? In 50 plus years of wrenching I have never gotten shocked by touching 12volt wires!
I was looking for this comment and had to scroll way too much! This needs to be on top! Why would they say something stupid like this?
We are all screwed!!
Shame on Cummins and Ram.
I would think a class action lawsuit would be warranted and stand up in a court of law. Why hasn’t it been done by now??
Build it as cheap as they can then sale them for top dollar that’s what the world has come to
Disconnect....!!!
If you flip your mirrors up, you deserve to have loose bolts inside your engine😅😅
😂
Put them down though you lose like 50 hp
@maxpain7197
Texans have figured this out for everyone else.
4:26 Don't work on engines buzzed or drunk if you're serious about quality!
Had my 6.7 done last May and can say everything they claim is on the money.
Get shocked with 12V???? No way!
But you could make short to the metal parts around it. That could cause sparks, melting and you could burn yourself. But theoretically it is safe if the ignition is off.
All well and good but Ram will not warranty your truck if you install the Monster Ram !!!
Why not just delete the grud heater. Its not even needed. Just use a block hwater.
There's definitely a better way to pass electricity through a casing cover... Just look at how EV's do it.
Increase fuel economy? Haha
Who gets shocked off 12volts? Lol
Great video otherwise.
You'll feel it but under 40v hasn't reportedly electrocuted anyone yet
I was replacing the grid relay on my 1997 Ram 5.9 cummins when I inadvertently grounded my wedding band to the 1/4" ratchet tightening the battery cable. Melted a chunk out of the gold band. Also provided me with a permanent scar/brand for a band now.😮
@@kevinj945 Why would you wear gold while getting your hands greasy? Did you put on a white shirt and your favorite jeans too? What could go wrong
I really hate the fact that this is all AI narration. This is bullshit.
