Actor Taimak who played Leroy said that the arrow scene in the opening of the movie was real. They had almost no budget for effects so he really did chop all those arrows in flight and then caught the blue one. Actor Julius Carry who played Sho'nuff said that he had a hard time with the role, due to not having any martial arts training. A few times he snapped at the Director who wanted him to do more spinning kicks and such. He told him "Hey, I'm an actor, not a Kung Fu expert!!"

    Such a nostalgic movie!
    Black guy acting Asian,
    Asian guys acting black,
So many over the top characters!
    Good music,
    Kung Fu fighting
    Shonuff!
    And of course Vanity!
What else do you want out of an 80's urban comedy kung-fu cluster fuck?
This movie is stuck in the feel good part of my childhood 4realz😂...

No this is not a parody at all. And as far as the hat we weren't all sensitive back then on what people wore. And when it comes to people that are actuall Martial artist the the rules change, you basically can wear whatever you want. Im Mexicano and we had Thai outfits and no one ever said anything., because we were all students training in Muy Thai.

So Berry Gordy was the head of Motown and he wanted a way to showcase his talent. The lead actress Vanity was actually a singer and had a band called Vanity Six which was put together by Prince. Later on in life, Vanity did some interviews were she basically eluded to the fact that Berry Gordy pimped his female talent out including herself to get deals done. At some point she found religion and was vocal about the way the entertainment industry chews up people.

i dont mean to be rude but your wife is dead inside lol.
In the intro she was full of character so its obvious she isnt always dead inside but JESUS its as if she hated life watching this movie.
Its okay not to like it, especially watching this as an adult 40 years after it was released, but for the love of GOD why was she so negative lol.
This the type of movie that was popular during the times, when Video Games and Anime started making its way worldwide re-inventing popculture etc.
Watching this as a kid, teen and young adult at that time was unreal and also Martial Arts genre was HOT CAKE so this movie had it all.
Too bad she couldnt enjoy anything out of it.
    P.S CUTE DAUGHTER lol

To call this a parody - I suppose that could depend on how one views the parameters of a parody. It's certainly over the top; and has moments that seem like they're spoofing other more serious movies, but everything in this movie is an artistic choice rather than making fun of or parodying other movies. At the time it was certainly a unique movie. I don't recall any other movie having this overall feel to it. Not sure if this kind of thing could be done today though. I suppose the closest thing I could connect - even if very loosely - is the Black Power Ranger Zack, who uses hip hop dancing and martial arts to create Hip Hop-Kedo. His own custom fighting Style.

I'm glad I'm not too hip or cynical to love campy movies. This one helped me get to the Junior Olympics for TKD in St Louis bitd! The soundtrack (available on Spotify) was a great training aid. We didn't have a lot of wholesome heroes for US back then. -That one person really seemed annoyed with Vanity (RIP) too. I'll pass on this channel. I'd rather watch the "Well Hello Silly" channel. Those two are positive and upbeat while still managing to give honest reviews, good and bad.
