  • Today we're building a turbocharged MR20DD engine--a relatively new Nissan 4 cylinder engine that has very little aftermarket support. There were a number of design limitations we had to work around but we should be able to double the power of the stock engine pretty easily.
    Guess what? We sell parts and MotoIQ merchandise! Now you can buy all the same aftermarket parts we use on our project cars and features from the brands we trust! Buying your aftermarket parts from us is the easiest way you can help help support our channel and make sure we can continue making content like this! Check it out at shopmotoiq.com!

    Mike, been reading your stuff since I was a teenager when Sport Compact Car was still out... Read that religiously. Really glad to see you doing the same stuff on RUclips today. Looking at how much work this Sentra engine is to make any power makes me very grateful to grow up with 90's engines. God bless this owners soul for putting this much money into a Sentra.

    the plus side of adding port injection as support is that it'll also wash build up off the backs of the intake values and do the engine some good in the long run.

  • @dnltbrca

    guys, this engine is turbocharged in Europe. It's famously used in the alpine A110 and some Renault products. it's a 1.8 because of smaller bores, but it's the same stroke, so the same crank. A version of it makes 300 hp if remember correctly. you might be able to source injectors and a crank that way, if you ever need it in the future.

    • @motoiq
      @motoiq  10 месяцев назад +4

      I wonder if the MR18DDT has a stronger crank and a main cap girdle like the MR16DDT and if it will interchange with the MR20DD? We only had a few weeks to build this engine and it was difficult to get any parts out of Renault. We had a bunch of stuff on order and it didn't show up.

    Great build! Pumped to see all the custom work! A few things to note: we have built 600 hp MR engines. The cranks can very easily take the power if you keep pressures under control. We rev them out to 9000 rpm (in the smaller mr16 variant) without issue, after converting to port injection. The mr18 head from the versa fits the mr20 block, as they are the same bore and casting. We have done that before. Aux fuel works great, but nothing beats an oem port injection conversion. We have used oem bearings up to the 400 hp area without issue, but there are upgraded bearings on the market. Any MR based transmission will bolt up to this engine. The renault trans he is referring to is the same one that is found in all the b17 sentras and non-rs jukes here in the states. There are upgraded clutches on the market for those as well. We use clutchmasters. The fx350 has handled several hundred dyno pulls at 600 horsepower and quite a few track days for testing. Also; you can destroke the 2l down to a 1.8 by using the mr18 crank. You just have to use a different rod/piston combo. Just like you can stroke up the mr16 by using the mra8 crank.
    The open deck will handle 400 whp just fine, again if you keep pressures at a manageable level. Over that, a fill or block guard is recommended.

      You can use the trans from any 6-speed MR engine on this engine. The Juke and Sentra trans will bolt right up, with appropriate mounts and such. The electronics side is not as simple going from CVT to manual in a street car. We usually tell people to just trade in the CVT car for a manual car, its cheaper and easier.

    This is wild! I'd never expect them to go that hard on efficiency with the stock parts. The rod and piston taper and those pistons in general it's like material is only where it has to be. All about that cafe rating. Those JE Pistons are some trick race pistons! Thanks for this! It's cool to see parts with such different optimizations! I think the 2.5 is even worse for journal overlap. I know it has a dumb low rod/stroke ratio. It's too bad it would be a handful and a half to adapt VR30 fuel components. I think you're on it about all that chamber geometry being for the tumble to swirl ratio. There was an sae article i tried to read about DI optimization but all i took away is that DI and Diesels like one and port likes the other. The new supras have all those chamber hot spots too. It's wild they have squirters in the block and big end of the rod.

      Man i'm a crash dummy with too many tools. I wondered why the only two DI heads i'd seen the chambers on looked wild and got on google. I think something like "GDI tumble vs swirl" got me to a society of auto engineers article that had too much engineering for me to make real sense of. Having trouble finding it again. Feeling was it's to break up swirl and promote tumble in compression. I could have that all the way wrong though

    • @alexhise968
      @alexhise968 10 месяцев назад +2

      Its cause the rod is designed for more compressive loads than tension loads on top of that the piston is also supported across the crown to a greater extent keeping a better sealon the bore and more stability in the ring lands. Its why the piston was able to use such thin rings. Its a very strong piston just not a tough piston due to not having much ductility

    • @ther1kid
      @ther1kid 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@motoiq The small end taper is because it only needs to carry the relativity light load of the piston as it pulls the piston down which requires less material. The bottom thicker side of the small end is carrying the combustion pressure in compression so it stays thick to carry the much higher load. I seen that on Jays real street performance break down of the new and old supra engines.

      They already do. We build MR16/A8 hybrids that rev out to 10,000 rpm and make well over 500 horsepower. Reliably.

    • @FRArchive
      @FRArchive 8 месяцев назад +1

      To expand on this: We have a bone stock MRA8DE making 280 whp. It has been driving around for a few weeks now without issue. We are waiting for warmer weather to try for more power. It should make 300 whp without issue on e85. Then after that, we are just going to see how far we can go until it breaks something.

      @@FRArchive very cool to hear! I know the guys across the atlantic run those mr18ddts in the Renaults over 300 no issue but typically don't push the rods over 350. interested to hear how it goes for you

      The 1.8 has a higher stroke and compression from what we know, so a few more whp from 12% more displacement makes sense on that. The A8 now has 1000 miles on it, and after doing a comp test the other day, its holding up fine.@@__gr4v1ty__

      why 😮 why what.. why not.!! it's a challenge and to give current Nissan drivers abit of hope of getting some power from the regular every day transport since there is no more GTS , SER or Vzr just the regular eco cars.. people like them but need just abit more oomph and don't want to buy something else.. just a nice unique build 😎

      If we had the time we would investigate it, we only had weeks to build this engine. I am pretty sure that many parts would interchange.
