    This car showed how jealous the Australian public were of this awesome car. They banned it after 2 years of domination. They whinged about its 4WD and how it rendered Holden and Ford obsolete. An absolute engineering marvels. This car and the team under Fred Gibson were first class professionals and fans hated them for it.

    I was enthralled at the GTR's abilities as a teenager. At the time, Bathurst was a production car race, it was several races in one with the different classes. Anyone who watched could see the potential of their favourite car, from the NA four banger corollas to the eternal kings of the mountain, the GTRs.
    The irony is that there was already an AWD turbo car in that race, it had a ford badge on it, and was allowed to race...........even though it was never available in the Aussie market. The fact that the Japanese had engineered a production car that could spank everything, and did so very reliably, should have been the catalyst for domestic car improvement and a glimpse into the trend of technology vs the old formula of more cylinders/displacement. When they banned these cars I tuned out, I have never watched the V8 'stupidcars' as it is an insult to the intelligence of anyone with a triple digit IQ.
    End of rant..............flame away low tech bent 8 fanboys

      If i were you, id get into watching the Supercars. Forget that they are token holden and fords, now other makes as well. They share nothing with the road cars, they are bespoke race cars and the racing is epic. The development of the cars is very advanced. If you ever spoke to some of the people involved in the engineering and manufacture of the cars, it just gives you more appreciation.
      They are far more wild than F1, way more cut and thrust and the race atmosphere is fantastic.

This 'trend of technology' hasn't really improved since the 2000's so I don't even know what you're talking about - and EVERYONE drives in shitbox SUVs anyway which drive like shit in every way, cost a fortune and have terrible fuel consumption (look at new car sales figures, it's fucked). by the way actual motorsport fans would have V8 'stupidcars' as one of the most respected series right next to WRC and F1 in the world as one of the last series in the world to have good 'driver racing' with hauling heavy ass cars with no driver aids, little power steering, clutch on downshifts (these shit on Eurocentric GT series like Blancpain imo).

    With Ford and Holden not manufacting in Australia we should go down the tecnology road like the GTR. Good proving ground to introduce to family cars like the AWD giving safer cars for our roads because the 2 Aussie manufacturers we're never going to give us the safe cars that imported one's give and they wonder why Aussies stopping buying them. It's because Australians knew they could be safer than in a Falcon or Commodore.

      Steve Johnson, Australia kept Group A Racing going until the end of 1992, 2 years after Germany gave Grp A the flick, this is an established fact. It was the FIA that abolished turbos in Group A Racing, Australia/CAMS didn't act unilaterally on that. It wasn't really the GTR that saw the demise of Group A, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back. The real problem was the dominance of the Ford Sierra RS500 in Europe......chiefly Germany and Britian. 3/4's of the field in the BTCC and the German TCC were Sierras. Did the GTR lay Australian tracks to waste in Group A? Yeah they did. But so did Johnson and Bowe before them in Sierras. As did Andy Rouse did in Britain in a Sierra......and the Texaco Sierras did in Germany

    • @michaelwilson7924
      @michaelwilson7924 4 года назад

      Both Germany and Britain gave group A the flick at the end of 1990, that's just the way it happened. Australian Motor Racing Fan's unwillingness to adopt Group A racing, had nothing to do with that. The close racing the FIA told motor racing fans that Group A would provide, never materialised. The dominance of the Ford Sierra in Britian and Germany effectively killed Group A Racing. In 1989 in the BTCC, literally every car on the grid was a Sierra. It's also true that CAMS in Australia persisted with Group A 2 years after Britain and Germany killed it off. Australian bogan motor racing fans had nothing to do with CAMS giving Group A the flick, that's ignorant, errant nonsense. CAMS simply followed suit by killing it off.....just like Britain and Germany did two years earlier
