      and the GTR caught it up after being left in the slow pack behind. Thats the memory that lives on.
      Its hard to imagine how the Seirra driver and the GTR driver were in a league above the slower competitors of this series such that they'd lap the last place drivers.

    • @Anax100
      @Anax100 3 года назад +2

      @Honda Fag The Sierras were carrying lead ballast at this point in time to try and handicap them and make the v8s competitive. It wasn't enough to stop them winning but it made them more dangerous to drive. I don't think the Nissan had ballast as the skylines had always been so-so competitors in previous versions so they got a pass. The 1990 GTR shocked a lot of people, especially those used to seeing the earlier models fight for a placing.

    • @brantleyfoster021
      @brantleyfoster021 2 года назад +2

      @@Anax100
      LOL, it just went straight to the lead & opened the gap up by over 1/2 a minute within the first few laps.
      No one had seen a car do this before in Australia.
      It's mainly because of the GTR's advanced AWD system, the Australian racing teams managed to get it generating far more lateral G's than the rest of the world.
      It had far superior control as a result.
      The RB motors have a very broad power band with the twin turbo setup.
      Even with all the penalties in 1992, it still generated 600hp due to some clever tuning.

    And then the rule makers got salty and slugged the GT-R's with stacks of weight.
    By this time though, Group A was on its way out due to escalating costs and lack of manufacturer involvement; bogans were crying, upset that a 6 cylinder turbocharged Japanese rocket was beating their heroes (never mind that the Gibson GT-R's were developed to an inch of their lives and were the fastest of their kind on the planet), the Brits were moving to the Super Touring era and touring car racing was going into somewhat of a dark age.
    I was a diehard Holden fan but I was always partial to the GT-R. It led me to the Japanese JGTC series which became Super GT. The racing there is awesome.

    Nissan doing what Audi did best in the US and Africa. They quickly saw the potential of AWD too. They probably hated losing against Audi with their 300ZX.

    As much as i love the GTR on Skyline series(R32,33,34),i find it bullshit that BMW M3 GTR got disbanded because it was too OP,i wish those 2 GTR from different manufacturers may a comeback

    Lets take a closer look at the "lap of the gods". Group A specs 10" wide tyre / SC 11". Only reason GTR was 4wd was due to 10" tyre (whack some 11s on it and you got yourself a rwd). GTR was around 350kg in race trim heavier than todays min wt of SC. GTR was never ran at full potential in the ATCC in an attempt to keep it competitive (esp in 91 and 92). 92 the GTR carried an additional 150kg of ballast for bathurst and still set 2:13 in qual. 11 years later SC sets a 2:06 WOW (sarcasm intended).
