Alexis Argüello World Featherweight Champion 1974-1977 World Super Featherweight Champion 1978-1980 World Lightweight Champion 1981-1983 Speaking in 2005
I had the Privilege and the Honor to Sit right next to Alexis Arguello here in Hollywood, Florida back in the lat 1980s, and my wife and I were so young. My wife is tall and thin and He kissed her hand like a Chivalrous Gentleman that he was. And instead of speaking about himself, he asked us about us, and spoke of Italy, that he had been in Italy, loved Italy, and asked about our son, Dominic, and had a smile that truly lit up the room. He gave me a hug and wished us well, and always Spoke of God. He said Grace before he ate supper and always said, "Thanks be to God--" He truly was a Special Person. And such a sad ending for such a lovely man--God rest his soul--I'll never ever forget this fine man
What a nice story. We don't often hear such stories about famous athletes. It seems that Alexis was truly a great person as much as he was a great athlete.
I was at the Luigi Minchillo vs Tommy Hearns fight in 1984 in Detroit, I was standing in line at the concession stand. Standing in line in front of me was Alexis Arguello. I realized it when he turned around. In 1990 I met Tommy Hearns. So I was standing behind the greatest junior lightweight of all time and met the greatest junior middleweight of all time
One of the best Featherweight champions ever, i would have liked to see Salvador Sánchez vs Arguello,it would have been a WAR. RIP Champion
Alexis must be one of the most likeable champions all round in the history of boxing, his ability in the ring and such a humble gentleman outside.
How can anyone not like this gentleman? Such a great humble man.. RIP Champ!!
