I actually saw Rey tam at a awarding he was the same table as me we were in baguio and his award is the hall of Fame and I still can't believe I saw him in person
I’ve seen the comments about not having time to prepare and being tired. Azuma Nelson said the same after he lost to Sanchez. Respectfully, I have to wonder why they fought if that was the case. You know you have a fight coming so why not be prepared? In the end it was the fighter or team’s decision to go ahead. Tam was a good fighter but he looked good right up until he walked into Arguello’s uppercut. I think the outcome would have been the same no matter. Just my opinion.
I still remember Rey Tam was from Baguio City. He was an RP champion and world rated. But given the disadvantage of any invading warrior fighting in the foreign land, Rey Tam was literally fed to the lion’s den. The promoter also helped in the Arguello’s retaining the title, giving uncomfortable accommodation to the RP’s Rey Tam, like late procurement of visa, along with long hours travel, absent of sparring venue, among others. Thanks to Sen Manny Pacquiao who is now considered a world icon in boxing, adding to the list of his predecessors in Flash Elorde, Pancho Villa, Dado the Bolo Puncher, Rolando Navarette, Ben Villaflor, etc
How many times has the great Arguello fought his world championship bouts do you think ? 23 times altogether if my memory is correct. The all 23 out of 23 his championship contests, Arguello fought them in the "foreign" lands. Only once he challenged an another legendary champion in Miami Florida for his fourth world title in where was somewhat considered to be Arguello's hometown at the time. And Arguello was not from USA !!!! I really don't wish to say any derogatory thing about fighters, but Rey Tam was no where good enough to be fighting at world class level. I remember saw him fought an old washed up Japanese club fighter in 1980 and he lost the very dull fight. He was not qualified to be in there with such a great champion like Alexis Arguello. It was nothing, but only an easy tune up for Arguello after he took the title from Escalela the very tough champion. They were talking about a dream match between Arguello and Duran at the time.
Alexis wanted to fight Roberto Duran at 135. Duran would have destroyed him. I love Arguello but Duran was hard to hit, he was faster, and his relentless pressure and inside fighting would be too much.
He was my boxing idol.
Alexis Arquello the greatest super feather weight of 20 century

At the 18:00 mark, Tam turns away and quits and Arguello, ever the gentleman, backs off. What a great fighter he was.
El quinto fantástico fue y será siempre el caballero del ring ..el flaco explosivo..
Arguello so nice pats him in the head like a little brother
Lolo ko si rey tam and I am proud of that.

True, Tam was all good and game but Alexis showed him the real master that night.
