  • Alexis Argüello (April 19, 1952 - July 1, 2009), also known by the ring name El Flaco Explosivo (lit. "Skinny the Explosive"), was a Nicaraguan professional boxer and politician. As a boxer he was a three-weight world champion, having held the WBA featherweight title as well as the WBC super featherweight and lightweight titles. He has regularly been cited as one of the greatest fighters of his era, having never lost any of his world titles in the ring, instead relinquishing them each time in pursuit of titles in higher weight classes. After his retirement from boxing, Argüello became active in Nicaraguan politics and in November 2008 he was elected mayor of Managua, the nation's capital city.
    Arguello is ranked 20th on The Ring magazine's list of "100 greatest punchers of all time" and was voted by the Associated Press in 1999 as the #1 junior lightweight of the 20th century.

    Classic Arguello right hand. Both fighters were past their primes but Arguello still had that classic straight right.

    Arguello was in talks to fight Costello for 140 pound title before Costello was upset by Lonnie Smith. If Arguello had gotten the shot before Smith and win like this,he would have become first 4 division champion in boxing history. Timing is everything. Arguello classy with Costello in post fight interview as always, a great inside and outside the ring.

      Nope arguello challenged Pryor and got cheated from winning the 4th division title. He is the unofficial first 4 division champ. Panama and pryor can go shove it

      Arguello had the chance to fight Saul Mamby and Bruce Curry who champions at Jr welterweight around the time Pryor was the WBA champion. Arguello wanted to fight Pryor cause he was the best in the division and a fight with him paid the most. Had he fought any of the other champions, he would have been the first 4 division champion. He was cheated against Pryor.

      Most lists I've seen have Arguello outside the top five featherweights of all time. I don't necessarily agree with that.
      Most lists do have Arguello as #1 or #2 all time among junior lightweights.

    Arguello retired after this fight. He said it was the first fight were he got angry. He didn't like the person he became that night.

    • @Salieri47
      @Salieri47 3 года назад +3

      IIRC Arguello had a heart condition that led to his first retirement, and influenced his second retirement.

      And still he had one more ill-advised comeback in his 40's (a decision win over an absolute nobody and finally a decision loss over a slightly better opponent).

    Despite Gil Clancy's criticism I thought Costello fought the right fight. Move, make Arguello use his legs and mix it up to the head and body. The way past his prime Arguello was easy to hit and out speed.
    Arguello had that right hand which was the obvious difference.

    I loved AA! I was enraged when I found out Pryor got juiced up on coke mixed in a bottle by Panama Lewis every time he started looking fatigued in that first fight and Pryor's superhuman punch output in the final 14th round came straight from the Columbian jungle, through Miami right out to Vegas. Don't let the revisionists fool you with claims it was peppermint schnapps or antihistamines mixed with water in the bottle. Pryor was a cokehead through and through and snorted and freebased himself right out of boxing losing his title without ever losing it in the ring. The first fight ruined Alexis...killed his confidence. Here you see the last of his greatness on display but Pryor, Lewis and Pablo Escobar ended Alexis as a dominant force in Pryor-Arguello 1.
