- This week we're preparing for winter on the homestead. We get a delivery of silage tarp to (hopefully) deal with the weeds ahead of our massive potager expansion next year. Plus Brook sorts out the new drainage system around the extension. Including installing a French drain, so we don't have rising damp issues in future.

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a young family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns. We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible!
We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way. When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.

Thanks Joanne. If the right products come along then we're open to it but we'd definitely want to test things out before promoting them to others.
Just a thought, but if you have any doors, hatches, cellars, or openings which are downhill or slopes down from that huge sheet of plastic you laid out to kill the weeds? Make sure you sandbag the heck around those openings to prevent unwanted flooding from the runoff off of the plastic. Best of luck! ✌🏻

Don't forget to hard prune those chilies down to a few main stems maybe 6-8" tall. Take off all the leaves. That forces the plant into dormancy with less plant to maintain and takes the strain off it. Works a treat.

Silage cover looks terrific. I recommend wood chips as walkways in the spring if you can get them free. In N America we have “Chip Drop”. Happy Fall to you!

Hi! Linda Woodrow's book on Permaculture has lots of excellent ideas with regards to companion planting and putting chickens to work to prepare soil for future planting. I've followed her advice and had great success with her methods. Happy gardening!

Garden looks fantastic, you've done a great job on it. My wife brings chillis in for the winter and they do fine - you might need a bigger pot though !

A tracker might help. I hung a fence all the way around my house with different bells on each side. That way I at least knew which direction.
Remember in a blink of eye 20-25 years flies by and then all that sleep you missed and found time for catch up sleeping.

Happy Birthday to Somebody and glad you are feeling better! We are on the same pepper plant schedule, I brought my peppers inside a few days ago. Only issue I have is aphids, as I do not have ladybugs in the house to eat the aphids! Hopefully some ladybugs tagged along in the polytunnel or maybe you are blessed with no aphids at all.
I love hearing about all your plans, thrilled to follow along. Yeah, you can influence me lol.
We've been really lucky this year and haven't had any aphids. We do have quite a few ladybirds so maybe they've kept on top of it. I was going to say maybe it was too hot but googling it they love the heat. However it seems they hate marigolds which we had a lot of so maybe they kept them at bay 🤔
