This is haunting how Lars is talking about their 8 weeks of headlining in Europe only to pan over to Cliff, whose life would end during those eight weeks. Life is precious. RIP Cliff Burton - God of Bass.
Very haunting. They're also touring with Ozzy, which lost Randy Rhoades to a freak plane accident a few years prior. And Lars was talking about Dave and Megadeth, and of course we know that history, but also that Dave would write a great song about Burton's death too. A lot of depth in that 10 seconds of video and audio.
@@samsmith3025 James Hetfield in 1997 Reload era is closer to the James in the video than who he is now. His transformation is truly amazing and all for the better
MY METALLICA STORY: When James mentions in the video that they are going to Texas in June since ozzy had left to Japan, it brings me back to when I was in 8th grade and Metallica was coming to South Texas to play at the Villarreal Convention Center in McAllen Tx. I was supposed to go with my cousin but my mom didn't let me go. I was only 14 years old. He ended up going and got a green guitar pick. Not only did he get a guitar pick, but he got to witness by far one of the most Historical Heavy Metal Bands of all time in its purest, and rawness as it gets. And to this date, they take me back to those teenage years of "what ifs" and "almost" possibilities. Then months later, the tragic death of Mr. Cliff Burton comes out on MTv news. I was like, NO!!!!! They were so close to home two months earlier and I had a chance to see them. Then in 1989, with the injustice for all tour, I had another chance to see them in the summer in Florida. My brother was going to see them somewhere in Tampa Bay and he told me if you get here earlier, ill take you. Well, I got there a week late and all he had for me were the memories recorded in a Walkman that he snucked in. Then as I am coming back on the greyhound bus, as we pass Houston Tx, I see on the Houston Rocket's The Summit Arena that Metallica was playing the next night. I just looked at that marquee through my bus window until that opportunity faded. Finally, Im out of high school and im going to college my first semester when the Black album came out. I remember being in class, and this guy next to me was listening to Metallica in his portable CD player. So we start talking about the new album and out of nowhere he pulls out 2 tickets to see Metallica in Corpus Christi Tx. Now, Corpus is about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs from Brownsville Tx. Not far, but too far for me when I don't even have a vehicle to drive. I went to school in a bicycle for my first 2 years. So yes, another opportunity passed me by. So years pass, I graduate from college, get a job in 98, buy a car and Metallica is headlining the lollapalooza tour. I had a coworker at the time that ended up going to see them and I didn't know that she liked them. She comes back and tells me guess where my husband and I went this past weekend? I was like, I don't know. She said, we went to go see Metallica at the Retama Park in San Antonio Tx. I almost choked her. LOL. So, im almost hitting 30 and I still haven't seen my favorite band Metallica. Opportunity knocks once again in 2000 as Metallica announces a summer tour called Sanitarium. Boom! I buy my ticket for the Dallas show at Texas stadium in Dallas Tx. I think it was Kid Rock, Korn, System of a Down, etc... This time I buy a round trip ticket from Harlingen Tx to Dallas and back to Harlingen airport the next day. I was set! Then, out of nowhere, I get selected as a 12th member juror in a civil case that lasted ALL summer long. Yes, everyday I had to report to jury duty for $7 a day. It was a BIG case with lots of history in our home town. Anyway, the dilemma was that the concert was on Sunday and I had to be back early Monday for jury. Well, luck was in my favor this time cause the presiding judge gave us a whole week to enjoy our summer and it just so happened it was that Monday following the Sunday night concert. I was ready! So here comes the weekend and its Saturday already. My flight left Sunday morning. I was out that night and got home like around 3 in the morning. I couldn't sleep of excitement that finally I was going to see my BAND. I wake up to like 2 different alarms. I wasn't about to miss my flight due to oversleeping. Luggage check, concert ticket check, airline ticket check. I get on my mustang and head out to the highway. As I am driving, I start thinking about the flight. Yes, to this point I hadn't been on a plane since I was like 14 years old. I was 29. So, the 1st couple of miles into my journey to the airport, FEAR of flying kicks in out of nowhere and it lingers in my head. So I do the unthinkable and exit the highway and head home with a SADNESS but a relief that I was no longer going to fly. It was about $500 value of flight and concert ticket. But wait! I find out that James didn't play that night due to an illness, and that Metallica was going to make up that show when James got better. So now, I have a flight ticket and concert ticket that i need to change for the rescheduled concert date. I choose the 2nd night show at the Dallas Mavericks Arena. I go to the airport and inquire about changing my unused ticket. I'll had to do was pay extra fees for changing it. While I am at the airport I am seeing all these planes land and take off and again FEAR kicks in and I just give up on the whole thing. I call it the "The Thing Shouldn't be" or The thing that didn't happen. Then months later, Jason Newsted quits Metallica. I was like NO!!!!!!!! years later I finally did see Metallica in the next Sanitarium Tour of 03 in Houston and Dallas Tx. Now it was Robert Trujillo as bassist. In 04, I bought tickets to see them in San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Austin, and the best one in Lubbock Tx. Why Lubbock you ask? I entered the meet and greet to all 5 cities and won it for the Lubbock show. I got to meet all members, talked to them for a bit wanted to express admiration for when I was a young kid but i just couldn't. Too nervous as they approached me. Its unbelievable to see them right in front of you. Now, I try to see them when they come down to Texas. Haven't missed a Tour since then. Thank you for reading my COMMENT OR SHOULD I SAY MY METALLICA STORY.
That's a whole lot of missed opportunities. Nice story! I missed out on seeing them in my hometown of Bergen, Norway which was a TOTAL bummer because I was in the Army at the time (we have 1 year of compulsory military service in Norway) . Loved being in the Army that year, but I missed out on Metallica & Iron Maiden that year (I had seen Maiden 2 times before that though).. I've never seen Metallica live, but I've seen Iron Maiden a couple of times, they're great..
Even though it was a long thread and my a.d.d. almost starting to kick in, I read your awesome story and thinking wow this could be a premise for like a Metallica based film similar to Detroit Rock City with KISS. I'm also thinking side note wise just how lucky to have been a kid during that time. Anyways, Rock On bro!
WOW, this is like a time warp, like Cliff never left. Seeing him so casual and happy like the rest of them, is so surreal. I agree with others, when the band talks about being in Europe, after August, and Cliff saying they will continue to tour into '87. It was also emotional when the crew guy said that Cliff was the oldest, at 23....24 was simply not his number. Regardless, this is pure gold. (Lars being asked), "What impact do you think you'll have on the future of heavy metal?" Oh, just become the biggest metal band the world's ever known.
Cliff did precious few interviews in his short time with us. This is probably the best one in existence. There was a decent audio only one he did on the radio back in '84 but nothing as interesting as this. It is surreal. All these years I was curious to know more about the guy. The definition of tragedy.
I got a cliff interview with Harold o from the metallimansion in june of 86 I believe...starts off talking bout the day on the green, clear ccrisp. I had that for years so long that its a real audio file! crazy
totally love how cliff still rocked the 70s style hes obviously the least trendy looks more like a deep purple member im sure if he lived metallica wouldve stayed more down to earth and end up like motorhead
Cliff wore what he wanted. His sister tried to get him to replace his shoes, and he was like "why?" Also it was said that his older brother was a big influence on him, and after he passed he wanted to pay tribute. So the bell bottoms jeans were part of it.
When James said, the were going to Japan the end of the year, while Cliff was sitting next to him and he didnt know that Cliff was not going to be there...
Say what you will about Lars drumming, but you can't deny that he truly enjoys talking and getting to know his fans. Even nowadays when you see videos of the meet and greets I feel he and rob truly enjoy interacting. I mean he was on the phone with that one guy for a while, and they were having an actual conversation. That speaks alot of a person.
He never gave himself enough credit even though he was a phenomenal drummer back then, but he has admitted in recent years that he was very insecure about his drumming back then and he'd over compensate for it when performing in concert.
Lars didn’t have the verbal abuse growing up and it shows in his social interactions. He’s able to convey feelings and warmth to whoever he is talking to. It’s great to see this early footage before the super success of Metallica.
Looking at a young baby faced Lars and the rest of the band is cool. One thing that stands out is Lars speaks his mind very effectively. Very articulate!
photographer Ross Halfin said "cliff ran that band, absolutely nothing happened without his consent, I don't think people realize how Important he was" in the metallica behind the music we hear Ross say. Lars took over from then on.... they cut his quote about cliff from the final doc, but I seen some of the stuff they had cut from that doc. damn must be over 20 years ago now and Ross said that
Pfft. Some people even say they sold out with “Fade to Black,” from the previous album Ride the Lightning. I love Metallica’s music, but all this “they sold out” comments are getting old.
Nick Manory By different people. Truthfully, they sold out when they put Escape on Ride because they did it thinking it would get them on the radio. This is why James is so reluctant to play it live. Anyway, I love the song, but those were James' words, more or less.
Metal elitists are all a bunch of suckers. They'd always say the band sold out just because they made a melodic tune instead of a fucking thrash one. Metallica was always known to be the most melodic one out of the big 4, the joint of chaos and harmony, that is Metallica, Cliff himself said that back then (he said something like that, I don't remember the exact same words). People just don't want to understand.
people saying they where sellouts had nothing to do with the music. It was the fact that they came out the gate saying kill all the record labels, and fuck MTV and that there this kind of band and not that kind of band... and they slowly did everything they said they wouldn't.
+Marc Andrew Narimatsu (Marcu D.) Some people say they sold out with Kill Em All by signing to a major label. Being called "sellouts" is something Metallica has never been a stranger to. Honestly, I couldn't give a shit. I like all of their music. They don't need more money. They have more money than they could spend in 20 lifetimes. They write and record Nye music because it's what they love to do. They've always key their hearts guide their musical direction. Any time someone reaches a new level of success, there's gonna be a group of idiots trying to knock them back down. I just listen to the music.
RIP Cliff Burton(Clifford Lee Burton) The masterpiece bassguitar player who was an insane character in Metallica Well will never forget you :( :/ 😞 Rest In Peace legend
I am literally enchanted by Cliff. He’s so cool, , funny… thinking about him, makes come to my mind only good things. His eyes and smile are beatiful and always move me. Cliff makes me feel ambivalent feelings. Sadness for his tragic loss, serenity and joy because this guy certainly bring positive things to his bandmates and to those around him. It’s not a casuality if after so many years so many people miss him even if they didn't have the privilege of knowing him. I’m one of these. Love you forever Cliff. A big hug to my beautiful red haired angel.
I'll never forget cliff when I met him at Hollywood Palladium in 1985 he was not even drinking he was already sobering up he was drinking Evian water when I was talking to him I will never forget that concert metallica armored saint Adam bomb and God bless me that night
It’s pretty amazing how much musical knowledge cliff had at such a young age. And the level of song writing and musicianship for guys in their early 20’s is crazy.
IDK if you are gay, but your comment reads as gay (IMO anyway). I find this ironic b/c Cliff is rolling his eyes at the mention of "gay" looking glam bands.
Cheetah Thunders. Maybe they are not male?? You do know that metal bands have female fans too. And there was nothing even remotely sexual/"gay" about OG's comment.
@@mdnblues There is that possibility! However, a lot more than 50% of metal comments are by males. Is it bad for me to say that IF a male says "the eye roll OMG look at the attitude" that's kinda gay? Do you feel "gay" is insulting? ;) Or do you feel that me saying such comments by males is kinda gay is inaccurate? Yes it was sexual. It sounded like the OP was swooning.
Sad whenever Lars starts talking about their itinerary for the year at 8:00. Europe in September for 8 weeks and then close out the year in Japan. Little did they know, Cliff would be gone during that European tour.
It probably didn't mean much to James, Lars and Kirk at the time but they must treasure this footage of Cliff not so long before we lost him. I doubt the next generation of metal heads appreciate just how important Cliff was to Metallica. He was HUGE. Everything he did was never surpassed - great to see him here, thanks for sharing
Really glad there's some footage of Cliff! I got a Rickenbacker because of him and Lemmy! Feel closer to the guy watching this as I really didnt know what he really was like until now. Love you Cliff Thank you
This is amazing. Lars describing the band as "up and coming". Cliff Burton. The guys just hanging out in a small room, answering phones. It's a cool snapshot of a moment in time before they became one of the biggest metal bands we will ever know.
Its so cryptic watching them talk about their upcoming tour in europe..from which Cliff will not return alive :( this was the pinnacle of the best metal band in history right here, firing on all cylinders, planets aligned, wind in their sails, and doing things their way motivated only by their sheer passion. So many mixed feelings watching this. R.I.P. Cliff!!!
In an interview only days before his death, Cliff was asked what Metallica would do if Lars met his maker (died or got killed) and Cliff said: "We'd have a big drunken party in his honour and then start looking for a new drummer quick."
11:45 Lars discussing Fleming "He was really easy to work with, didn't mess with the production" . A few years later "We had no idea what a producer was supposed to do."
I've been watching a lot of Metallica videos from Cliff's era after finishing reading his biography. Even though I've always been a fan of the band, it has given me a different perspective. It's quite emotional; as with many of us, Metallica is not just a band but a part of our lives.
I’m half way through that book myself. Makes me look at this interview differently. I wish there was more footage of Cliff talking and just hanging out.
Let’s be honest, we’re all just here for Cliff.

They are an awesome band studio and most definitely live!!!! You need to check them out if close to your area.

(Lars being asked), "What impact do you think you'll have on the future of heavy metal?"
Oh, just become the biggest metal band the world's ever known.
Cliff did precious few interviews in his short time with us. This is probably the best one in existence. There was a decent audio only one he did on the radio back in '84 but nothing as interesting as this. It is surreal. All these years I was curious to know more about the guy.
The definition of tragedy.
I said the exact same thing, didn't feel right seeing this yet knowing all would change.
That is so true. When watching it, you don't feel like you are watching something that happened when you were 32 years younger.

Lars, the fans and Napster. XD

Haha, I love that! Love Rocks!
it's funny that people thought they were selling out when they made master. now it's considered the truest form of the band.
Cliff seemed like the coolest person ever. I wish that i had known him 😥😥
