Jason's energy and attitude was so Metallica, and he knew it. That was a one time opportunity, and he had to take lot of shit to be part of this big monster, so I think it was because of the money, but also because that was Metallica at their peak.
Jason was the most passionate. When Cliff died and he joined, he looked up to the others so much. He really understood what he had; the fame and the opportunity. He stayed humble and down to earth while the others go buried in drugs and their egos.
Kirk was too. Kirk has always been quiet and humble. James and Lars have very dominant personality types meanwhile Jason, Rob and Kirk are more laid back.
Акс Роуз it makes him think of how much the band treated Jason like dirt. James and Lars continuously hazed Jason and never gave him the respect he deserved as the new bassist. Sure, they didn’t have much time to grieve and accept the death of cliff, but that doesn’t justify them treating the new guy who had nothing to do with cliff’s death like shit. Most, if not all, of the hazing came from James and Lars. I don’t think Kirk did much to Jason.
Man you ain't kidding. Jason was wise beyond his years. I had no idea he was their whipping boy so bad. No wonder he eventually left. There is only so much he could take.
@Richard Skipper It was back in James' heavy drinking days though before they really fell off the wagon, so his fame and wealth were beginning to get to him.
@Richard Skipper James had a LOT of issues with drinking back then. Theres a reason he went into rehab. When he would drink like that he got almost bipolar. He could be laughing and hugging you one minute and then about to rip your head off the next. Plus then the in fighting with Lars never helped.
Jason looked so done with James and Lars, picking on every little thing he does, ignoring him when they are discussing the show, like a kid in high school being ignore and bullied by the popular stuck up kids. You can see the annoyance in his face. Even at the end hes like "I have to put up with them, ya know for the kids" Poor guy treated like dirt.
@@jeisonrojas3943 That he puts up with them (how they treat him) for the fans and how they’ll understand that how they’re acting now is bad when they’re older.
I don't think Jason was happy being in Metallica so it was best he left so he could be happy. I always got that vibe he wasn't 100% on being there but the pay was probably making it worthwhile. And the fact that years later those guys admitted to how they may have acted was big on their part so hopefully everyone is in a good place.
He never cared about the money he just wanted to play music "for the kids" as he said, he just got treated like shit from his bandmates with blown up egos
Jason said he saw the big picture. It was the gig of a lifetime and a dream come true. Those guys really never got a chance to grieve over Cliff. They grieved through Jason. Hazed him, mercilessly, and as Hetfield said, it never really stopped. Jason had, had enough when James told him he couldn't do the echobrain side project. Jason walked. It's a shame Hetfield never gave Jason the respect that he deserved.
Fuk that Jason should of been happy met chose him ....if it was that bad he'd of quit before 2001 echobrain sucks.. I just find it stupid that ppl in 1 band want to start a ,"side project" why?? Ur in metallica Ffs . Yeah ppl say it's Metallica... Like def Leppard Joe has a side project and Vivian too,...use the music you want to make in ur main band....I always felt both ways on side projects yeah one guys side stuff might not be fit for metallica but if u need to make diff stuff and promote it etc leave the first band start with this new stuff idk I guess
Fuck yeah he did. 4:50 - James (off-camera) nodding, pointing to his dick and mouthing "suck it." 4:51 - Jason's reaction verifies this is likely exactly what happened.
How can they turn of his instrument when they're performing themselves? It would have either been a mixing issue which would be on the sound engineers or he simply meant that his bass went out of tune. James and Lars would have no control over the mix. Also, they wouldn't be stupid enough to jeopardise their show by purposefully messing with the sound even if they did have control over the mixing.
In other words because of the black album exploding and metallica becoming huge lars thought he was the biggest "rockstar" on planet earth and his ego became wayyyyy too big
Poor Jason, Jason already knew he would be leaving metallica one day. Hear what he says in this video: THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND BUT THEY COME LATER WHEN I AM 40 WHEN THEY ARE LEFT ALONE. THEN THEY WILL REALIZE.
Same. You can tell how much he just wanted to play and be one of the guys. But James and Lars continuously treated him like dirt and you could tell how much it hurt him.
I know we started out with Cliff Burton, and may his amazing soul rest in peace, but Jason was *THE* bassist for MetallicA, he was the metallic soul remaining in MetallicA, and they forced him to leave. The sacrifices Jason made going with MetallicA and leaving them, is just as worthy to acknowledge as his talent.
@@hmpz36911 but he didn't have any significant impact on the band. James even said back in 1983 after they kicked him out that Ron was shit and Cliff was a musical genius and they were better off for it.
@russkate88 James & Lars lie(d) a lot! Yes, Cliff was amazing & a better Bassist for the band. Ron admitted that & helped to find one prior to him leaving. Ron was NOT kicked out, It was voluntary. It is foolish to deny that Ron did not have an impact on Metallica. Ron & James were best friends a log time & inspiration started via that kinship. Ron provided much support! Financially; paying for ads & equipment. Ron provided a place for them to jam & live. Ton helped pay for their move to NJ & return party. Ron paid for recording, mainly the No Life Til Leather demo, which was vital! Also, Ron was NEVER paid back a penny for NLTL after all it made, or ANY of it & MORE! Even after Lars & James were multi-millionaires & Ron was facing bankruptcy, Lars & James gave Ron nothing! Ah, but Dave Mustaine stepped up. Even apologized & offeres Ron more. Still, Lars & James burned Ron bad, especially James! One of the demons James has buried deep within as well i bet! Just add it all up & it is very obvious! Yet Ron still takes a high road & still cares for James & i think waits for him in his own ways. I truly hope James does c9me around, ao to speak. But since Jamea got with that Kardashian, idk-idk-smfh!
When I watch this video it's clear that they let the rockstar thing get to their head. I mean they were on top of the world at this point. Playing to thousands of people every night. It was a constant party. It would be pretty fuckin hard to stay grounded as a person. I cant imagine the adrenaline they were feeling night in and night out. Things definitely got out of hand and they probably escalated until Jason left then they took a look at themselves. I love them anyways and I still find all this backstage bullshit hilarious. It was a different time thats for sure.
Lars was such a diva. James simply a dick, Kirk just the goofy one that could care less. Jason, was the outsider despite being the only one that put out the best effort. Makes you realize how people evolve into nothing at the end.
@@naughtymaster7994 He achieved peace of mind motherfucker!! While James has been in and out of rehab and is now divorced!! Everything he said at the end was right on the money!!
@naughtymaster7994 Eh, Metallica has been coasting of the fumes of the black album anyways. None of their albums from 2000 on would be as big as they are without it. I don't know of any "iconic" Metallica music to come from the last 20 years. I can pretty much do without it. Make no mistake. It's their thrash to black album that makes Metallica legends. None of this latter stuff.
Kinda sad video to watch. It seems funny but in fact they're making fun of the Cincy tragedy that happened in 1979 at the Who gig and then what Jason says trying to act funny but in fact he was fucking serious...
"The concert was a sellout, with 18,348 tickets sold. The majority of these, 14,770, were unassigned general admission tickets that were first-come, first-served."
Y'know I definitely agree that the way they treated Jason was wrong and harmful to the band as a whole but at the same time... Being in such a "super exclusive club" and having a new person join you and enjoy the same level of success without having been through all the shit like you... It would definitely make you want to catch them up to speed in a way. And at the same time; this is what? 6-7 years after he joined the band? At that point, there's a lack of boundaries and the band relationship is unhealthy. You can't treat the new guy like that forever, there has to be a point where the new piece is fully integrated so the whole can work at 100%. You don't see that happen with Jason. Being in an environment like that, where the people you're supposed to work with and trust mistreat you, it's like being on a personal emotional rollercoaster. The ups and downs never end, and you're always on edge. The money and the prestige is probably the only thing that kept Jason aware of the bigger picture, that there's more to gain here than lose. I honestly think Jason was planning on leaving the band at least 10 years before he really did in 2001. He did have a plan for those sandwiches lol.
This tour and the AJFA tour was Metallica's best years to see them live. I lived it. Miss those years. This is about 1992. That makes this 29!! Jeez! I remember like yesterday! Time flies!
Luc Wilson It is. But somehow I think that maybe that is what really never made him self-righteous like they were. He never was, but he easily could have become like them in Metallica. He filled the shoes of the biggest Metal band’s late bassist, but he wasn’t shunned by the crowd, his energy and charisma was accepted and loved. It’s a little understandable that James and Lars couldn’t treat him right at first, even though it was unjustifiable, but there isnt any excuse for why it lasted longer than a month to the years it did. A twisted part of me hopes that part of James issue with alcoholism and how self-hating he sounded in St. Anger was caused by a part of himself recognizing how horribly he treated Jason.
Benjamin Schiltz Vlogs the attitude of 80s and 90s era.. i think thry more behave than other bands on that era. Tons of bitch on back stage. Too much drugs
xBLiiDz this is true, however it was written during the AJFA writing sessions. There's a demo of it from around that time period, it sounds pretty cool
Yesss. During that tour, instead of having a support act, they played a 20 min movie/documentary of the band. The blackened intro started the movie off :)
I live in Cincinnati & I was at this show! I remember them getting on the mic & screen & talking to us before the show! I believe this was my second Metallica concert. I go every time the come to a Cincy! 🎸
I think he's explaining how they can suddenly become like evil (as in assholes) and grow horns or something? That they're kinda making his life miserable, but he keeps up with them for the kids (the fans). I might be totally wrong...
rubble400 I always thought Jason was talking about the fans reacting to him being himself on stage and the fact that the other guys would catch on when they're 40.
@@gjb79ful exactly, people make shit up on the internet and copy and paste it like it just happened and not that someone just made something up from nothing.

Saw them live first time when i was 16 89’ Seattle Coliseum HOLY SHIT 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏻. METALLICA & SLAYER are 2 of the greatest heavy metal bands in history. RIP CLIFF BURTON
Jason was the most mature guy in the band... James, Lars and kirk they all got maturity when Jason left are u serious????? They learned the "You dont know what you have untill you don't have it anymore" the hard way...
It's clear that most fans cannot stand Ulrich due to his immature behavior. My opinion of him is more or less the same. However, I still respect his relentless effort to be himself even if it means being an entitled, cocky snob. But I'm also seeing alot of hate for Hetfield and in some cases, Kirk. I don't really see where James is being an entitled prick in this video and honestly think Papa Het is a pretty cool guy who has been a lifelong inspiration for me. Kirk appears to be a bit of a pushover and a yes man towards Hetfield and Ulrich's tyrannical control over the group. Kirk is seemingly unoriginal in all of his backstage antics, appearing to mirror every move and echoing every punchline of the more dominant personalities. But all-in-all, Kirk seems like a very good guy. When James was telling Jason to back off during the final "Master" prior to the interlude, It sounded pretty dickish but at the end of the day, this is his attempt to enhance their performance even if it was in poor taste. Kirk and James' abrasive humor regarding the Who tragedy, may seem insensitive to some but they are thrash metal stars for crying out loud. Being edgy comes with the territory and it's not like it happened the night before. What do you guys find annoying and/or classless about Kirk and James? In closing, I find it very inspiring that we almost universally agree that Jason is a class fucking act and the heart of the Metallica that we love and admire!
BooMDooM 86 Kirk is egoless. He’s pretty socially awkward so his attempt of adding in to conversations is mirroring others big personalities. A big reason why Mustaine didn’t work out with Metallica is because of his big ego. Kirk is a perfect replacement for Metallica.
I never found anything wrong with Kirk he always seemed like a nice guy and never had a huge ego like Lars or even James in some cases. I felt for Jason in the end talking about how he had to deal with them.
It's not that deep, Jesus and by the way, Lars is not even on the same side of the room as James and Kirk, he's sitting near another wall and Jason is sitting opposite James. Doesn't really matter anyway, Jason could have moved his chair if he wanted to.
+MrBibbityBop he is a show off lol! Rich boy dumbass or whatever but one of the first drummers that inspired me in my teens. Gotta seek something good I suppose lol
Its for the kids…fuck yeah jason, thank you for being THE metallica bassist and despite having a big pair of shoes to fill they fit you like a glove we love you jason metallica forever!
last part... when Jason has the camera, what he is telling is that James and Lars are evil. the only fact is that they scored some mainstream hits in the early nighnteens and never topped that succes. These days the still play in sold out venues but still they can rely on very old successes. Just like the Rolling Stones ... play because you can't do anything else in this world I was a very big fan of Metallica in the old days but not anymore... Respect for Jason
I learned one thing from those metallica backstage videos - Rock(metal included) doesn't let you grow up! If you make rock/metal music, you are forever a child! :D

Jason's energy and attitude was so Metallica, and he knew it. That was a one time opportunity, and he had to take lot of shit to be part of this big monster, so I think it was because of the money, but also because that was Metallica at their peak.
@@danielpaez4210 i guess you mean peak?
@@lluvik2450 Yes, i did, i correct it, thanks.
Jason was the most passionate. When Cliff died and he joined, he looked up to the others so much. He really understood what he had; the fame and the opportunity. He stayed humble and down to earth while the others go buried in drugs and their egos.
Kirk didn't have as big of an ego as James and Lars had because he did acknowledge Jason as one of Metallica, unlike James and Lars
F for Jason the most mature, humble one in the room
Kirk was too. Kirk has always been quiet and humble. James and Lars have very dominant personality types meanwhile Jason, Rob and Kirk are more laid back.
Cliff always seemed like the most down to earth member to me
@@MunkeeFWRrnglow key lars seemed like a the kid thats friends with the bully just so he won't get beat up or picked on but alone is weak
That last part with Jason really made me think.
Of what
Акс Роуз it makes him think of how much the band treated Jason like dirt.
@@user-el6lt8fr3x James and Lars were the meanest, i think Kirk never fucked Jason, but he never had the guts to defend him.
Le RoSanz yeah I agree. Kirk was probably the guy stuck in the middle.
Fuck them.
jasons words at the ending..so prophetic..
@@chumon1992
That's not what bipolar is like.
Just saying.
@@AZ-kr6ff I know what bipolar is like. I'm not going to go into in depth detail on a youtube comment. I simplified the explanation a bit. Sorry
Newstead was a awesome addition to Metallica after burton. He held his ground and did a great job!
3:53 How metal was it James Hetfield?
Hetfield: *Oh My God! It was so metal dude!* 😂
Wow. Jason knew the whole time.
Damn I wasn't expecting that ending, Jason really said it.
What did he say? I don’t speak English and I didn’t understand him :(
@@jeisonrojas3943
That he puts up with them (how they treat him) for the fans and how they’ll understand that how they’re acting now is bad when they’re older.

-Jason
At 6:44 is sign language for, "bring me something to put up my nose"..
Haha. Yep!
+Mystery Man Didn't thought about it but now when you say it, it have to be that haha :)
I think it was more like jason you still have some on your nose

+Pugito Pitapayle hahahahahhahahaha yes
James was warming up his vocals in yeahs
@Andy Salter exactly...people make up all this shit and Jason himself says otherwise.
4:49 James turned off Jason's Bass.
Den V. more like lars
Fuck yeah he did.
4:50 - James (off-camera) nodding, pointing to his dick and mouthing "suck it."
4:51 - Jason's reaction verifies this is likely exactly what happened.
@LSU 19 What?
This is around the time the autism went full force on lars
LMAO
ROFL
In other words because of the black album exploding and metallica becoming huge lars thought he was the biggest "rockstar" on planet earth and his ego became wayyyyy too big
But to shorten it up yes autism
Nerds love to diagnose people who are not nerds as autistic.
Wow man, in all the “highlights” and shit, Jason looks so happy and goofy but here... makes me sad to see Jason like this.
We started out with Ron.
@@hmpz36911 ron sucked
if only we can have alive cliff to compose a songs for metallica and jason still rocking with them.. thats my ideal imaginacion
LOL, the ending with Jason is just so appropriate.
Where is Jason nowadays? Where is he touring and what did he achieve since he left these guys?
@@naughtymaster7994 He achieved peace of mind motherfucker!! While James has been in and out of rehab and is now divorced!! Everything he said at the end was right on the money!!
@naughtymaster7994 Eh, Metallica has been coasting of the fumes of the black album anyways.
None of their albums from 2000 on would be as big as they are without it. I don't know of any "iconic" Metallica music to come from the last 20 years. I can pretty much do without it.
Make no mistake. It's their thrash to black album that makes Metallica legends. None of this latter stuff.
@PrescottValley Isn't that the case for most bands
Wow clicking this thinking its cool and hilarious but the longer and longer you watch the worse and darker it gets
6:52, james and lars picking on jason. good old kirk backs jason up with "yeah i do that too".
Ik this comment is 8 years old, but he said "I've seen you do that too" sadly
james:"omg we're so fuckin metal dude!" loool
Kinda sad video to watch. It seems funny but in fact they're making fun of the Cincy tragedy that happened in 1979 at the Who gig and then what Jason says trying to act funny but in fact he was fucking serious...
Now I learned about the Cincy tragedy, tx!
Time flies!
What about Kill Em All, and Master of Puppets??? You don't like Cliff Burton?

I love how they start picking on Jason at 6:41, then Kirk is like "I think you do that too" classic.
fucking sad how they never really respected Jason...
@@lordreehaw1267 more than this James was a very shy kid... and also very sensetive, losing his best friend Cliff was a hard thing for him to accept

This was the backstage of my second favorite concert ever
All that for only 2 likes?
BooMDooM 86 Kirk is egoless. He’s pretty socially awkward so his attempt of adding in to conversations is mirroring others big personalities. A big reason why Mustaine didn’t work out with Metallica is because of his big ego. Kirk is a perfect replacement for Metallica.
They were very immature despite them being nearly 30 at the time
I never found anything wrong with Kirk he always seemed like a nice guy and never had a huge ego like Lars or even James in some cases. I felt for Jason in the end talking about how he had to deal with them.
bc lars always talks over kirk so hes learned to just shut up and take it
After the concert, James, Lars, and Kirk are all on one side of the room, and Jason's on the other.
It's not that deep, Jesus and by the way, Lars is not even on the same side of the room as James and Kirk, he's sitting near another wall and Jason is sitting opposite James. Doesn't really matter anyway, Jason could have moved his chair if he wanted to.

I learned one thing from those metallica backstage videos - Rock(metal included) doesn't let you grow up! If you make rock/metal music, you are forever a child! :D
Why are they all sitting around naked backstage with towels covering them for the cameras? hmmmmmmmm
Because they can
RevolterMJD1981 cause they take a shower n chicks would b in the showers waiting for them back than
Because why not and they took showers but why use cloths if you can use a towel it takes too much effort to put on cloths
The reason, as they share ideas about bellz (For whom the Bell tolls), is because they're taking a break before going back on stage to do an encore.
I would assume at this state they just finished the concert...
