I think it’s important to note when Navarro visits Annie’s brother, and she asks for some drinking water, he mentions the water “went bad three days ago” which is about the time the scientists disappeared….and “she” awoke.

I think the hallucinations will become worse as the season continues until they figure it out they’ve been drinking lead water.
There is some toxin leaking into drinking water so affected caribou to jump off the cliff scientists to lose their mind and run out naked to freeze to death. I hope this doesn´t move in the supernatural way, but it could be interesting.
Yes, please keep doing these. I was excited for the show but was too distracted when it finally aired to give it a proper viewing, this helped to fix many themes and missed details into my awareness. Thank you!
They hyped you. Really not that good. The supernatural gimmick so soon very poor writing. Usually film not based on a novel or reality not so good. Not well thought out or realistic. Plus that lit up neon town...very poor backdrop. Jodie Foster typically good but out of her element here.
I didn't get the impression that she was hard of hearing. I thought they added that "speak up" line so that we would know that the cops are father and son. "Speak up" is something your dad would say to you. It would also be really embarrassing if you worked together and he treated you like a little kid, but again, I think the writers are trying to set up that relationship. But IDK, I guess we'll see.
Also he didn't mention rage issues of main character? When she started hearing that song on the campus. And he also called it Beatles. But I think it wasn't their song lol. And also some thing was running on coridor
The tongue thing is related to Inuit culture. If anyone has seen "The Terror" then you know what is about to happen. Also, you should definately watch The Terror; it is one of the best 1 seasons shows out there!
Watched Episode 1 twice ; so good so good 🙃 The shaking man in the beginning of this episode is Owen McDonnell who played Eve's husband Niko Polastri in Killing Eve
Given how they've teased visions repeatedly, it would be cheap to promise the audience a supernatural thread and then bail on it with some cheap explanation. Supernatural may feel odd, but it seems better than wrapping it up with a bow and saying it was all a magnetic effect or folie a deus.
Lots of references to the season one including the quote from the Yellow King, the spiral, antlers and Lonestar Beer, plus Rust being from Alaska. I would not be surprised if there is an element of cosmic horror similar to that season that is implied but never proven.
THANK YOU for your thoughts about this season’s True Detective! 🕵️ Although it left me with even more questions than I already had, you’ve helped to expand the possibilities in my mind. This show tends to linger in my thoughts and it keeps coming back to mind several times each day! Please keep breaking down every episode! Well done!
Thanks for the breakdown! I'm with you about this season (re: the first season vs. all the other seasons) in that I'm anxiously optimistic about this season. Please keep the breakdowns coming!
“Review bombing”. Apparently some people still can’t handle having women in the lead. Yes, the first season was great. Then season 2 & 3 not so great, and had men in the lead. Give this season a fair shake. I liked it very much!!!
Can't wait for the rest of the show! It's so good so far and as a native I really appreciate them showing us as just everyday people and not some weird stereotype
My theory so far is that the mining company is doing something shady/illicit obviously something within the realm of murder. And the weird creepy paranormal stuff, I think there's something in the water thats making the people see stuff.
I can assure you the dad asking his son to speak up is not because of Liz’s hearing. We’re meant to see that as Liz favoring the kid. She’s essentially telling the dad to back off
When Liz was first at the station and was in the room examining all the personal items and closes the medicine cabinet, did you notice someone was watching her in the mirror as it closes? It’s a very brief glimpse.
@@ZegeebwahTravis (Cohle, Rust's dad I suspect) has a Bob like vibe and similar look. Hank is the name of the older detective. Cooper is the officer that calls Evangeline about her sister. Lulu, is similar to Lucy, who is handling the calls to the families of the scientists. And if you want to get into the weird- the sound design loved by Lynch, the e.lec.tric.ity referred to in this video @3:43 is reminiscent of the Arm (aka man from another place)
The one detail that REALLY stood out to me is the use of a very specific shade of blue. The color blue that Hank is painting the room in his house for his Russian mail order bride is extremely similar to the shade of blue on the floor of the science facility. That shade of blue is also the same color of Navvaro’s jacket and there are hints of that shade of blue throughout the episode. Seems very intentional. Sounds tin foil hat, but it reminds me of the detail from S1 of the specific color of the house being painted tying to Childress’ painting business and painting the house of the Fontenot family prior to the abduction of Marie Fontenot. Also- just noticed that Navarro’s sister has her hair dyed a similar shade of blue as well. It’s also the same shade of blue that Hank has for the keyboard on his phone when he is texting his mail order bride and the color of the hockey helmets. I know blue is a super common color but this has to be intentional in some way to draw our attention to it.
The guy in the trailer wearing Annie's Parka looks like Mosely, the miner walking out with Annie' brother when Navarro greets him at the mine entrance.
Anyone else think the reindeer had a reaction to something they smelled which terrified them? Could be biological (something to do the research station or the mining operation)? There’s definitely a murder cover up situation going on. It was interesting that Liz didn’t trust officer Hank and made his son bring her over the files from the previous murder. The magnetic field theory is interesting. Glad I waited to watch this until after the episode! I didn’t realize how many clues I missed. It makes me excited for more.
It could be they drank some water that had contamination causing dementia. Then some high frequency sound scared them so they ran and fell off the cliff. They didn't mean to jump off the cliff but just ran and it happens a cliff was there. Just like buffalo.
The last shot showing Jodie looking over all the photos on the floor--in the form of a SPIRAL. That's really connecting Season One. This should be good!!
I’m watching the episode again. What about the being that runs across the hall when the delivery man shows up and the place is empty. Something was still there. At this point I think it’s alien ish (not necessarily short grey ones) or possibly some type of pole shift magnetic issue that makes people go coo-coo.
I don’t know what to think about Dan. He seems to want to delay things as if the scientists left fresh food, acting as if he doesn’t hear a request to look at cases with missing tongues, and denying files are at his house. He knows more than he pretends. I think he plays dumb and jokes a bit too much.
I’ve watched it at least four times trying to glean more information! Thanks for this overview. Can’t wait for more! I think Hank and his kid are connected in some bad way. There is a line about blood in a coming episode trailer and the son telling his wife he has to fix this one thing and her screaming at him not to lie to her!!!
In the opening, the camera pans from Ferris Bueller to sammich guy, and coat dude isn’t there. It specifically shows the spot he’s standing. Then, sammich guy shifts and says “ta-dah”, and coat dude is there, covered in snow and shivering or shaking. Seems to me it was: a continuity error, meant to be deceptive, or he warped there from outdoors (reversed electronic sound?).
I don’t think Liz has bad hearing. I think the dad was trying to embarrass his kid in front of her. Also think there’s someone in the water or those samples that’s affecting people. Heard the series was somewhat inspired by The Thing movie.
I really hope this season can live up to true detective standard. Of course season one can’t be topped and is one of the greatest stand alone seasons of all time. I truly hope it’s not supernatural stuff.
I was hoping that as well. Supernatural works on a show like xfiles but has no place in true detective. Sadly however it looks like it may be pointing towards that. Ghosts have already appeared, the setting is a paying homage to 1980s The Thing which also dealt with supernatural. Yeah, it's taking me out. They brought on a completely different creative team for this one and in time I guess we'll learn if it was a smart move or a political one
the first one also has supernatural tone with it. Lovecraftian, Carcosa, Yellow King, especially the finale. Of course, it could be argued that it's more of a inside characters minds & the concept of psychosphere.
Actually, the first one had supernatural aspects to it. I think that would add to this series. Jodie Foster and Matthew McConnaghy are incredible actors!
@@WhisperLovely So you say you are suspicious because you arf politicaly biased. Because. You bring in politics. You always find this "politics" if you want to. Because you are biased.
That swirl is the same symbol rust comes across a few times as well I'm surprised u didn't catch that, H.P Lovecrafts book In the Mountains of Madness sounds very similar 2 this season, 1 Carsosa is mentioned severaltimes in Lovecrafts books, (snd an author b4 him the guy who wrote The Yellow king i think was inspirationalas well), 2 its about a antarctic research team going insane after finding out about a old civilization in the city of Carcosa, H.P took inspiration for the book from the Poe book u mentioned. They r definitely connected, if anyone wants 2 see what i mean just look up the Wikipedia page on In the Mountains of Madness..
Great first episode, definitely looking forward to the 2nd. Like you touched on in the vid, I feel like they’re leaning so heavily into the supernatural that there’s no way that it’s the actual reason for all the craziness going on. Great breakdown, would love to see more!
Beside the turquoise blue everywhere; Darwin draws wears same turq/blu…on that scary legend.. Paimon’s color in Hereditary) tsalala is blue and orange..my son said Dolphin’s colors..and then it’s everywhere. Also..right before Danvers sees we’re all dead on board…she glances at pic on wall…I see the pink parka, and handwritten “rare site” w/arrow pointing. Looks like something there. Two others in red (tsalal) snow jackets Is Travis Rusts dad possible in timing? I’m all in
I think the supernatural elements punch the story to the max with very interesting mystery elements, I think the little bit that was in the first season really made me like it that much more. Also, the spiral imagery really gives me Alan Wake 2 vibes which I like a lot.
Im not going to say this is the reason but, one of the progressed stages of hypothermia makes people feel 'hot', so they would proceed to take all of their clothes off, being as delirious as they would be, but the thing that gets me is how they are frozen, which looks like a 'flash freeze' to me. I also find it interesting that she saw the ghost of Travis. I think scientifically, if it is related to the magnetic fields and all that energy can make you be able to see the unseen, maybe. Alaska is huge, anything can happen in the country and there can be, not one single human soul around to even know about it until its too late.
I was hoping you'd explain or at least note a form that crossed in front of the camera in the lab (I think). Looking forward to parsing this out. You do very good critical analyses. Thanks! 🙌
A unique and fascinating glimpse of American society which I find almost alien. This first episode was exceptional. My only quibble, so far: In this episode we’re cautioned the water has been tainted/undrinkable for three days yet we see Jody Foster washing dishes and making soup - one assumes with water as an ingredient - without care. And, wouldn’t you expect to see cases and cases of bottled water stockpiled next to the mountains of canned goods and toilet paper? Lastly, is it SOP for cops to have boxes of case records in their homes?
Mercury poisoning is my guess. The mine is leaking mercury into the groundwater. The gold mining process uses mercury to recover gold particulates and mercury poisoning is known to cause hallucinations. Anna K discovered the contamination and was killed before she could blow the whistle. I think the missing murder weapon will turn out to be a piece of a mining tool due to the star-shape of the wounds.
@@sydneywellington_cazadora a magnetic shift between north and south that happens swftly would just kill everything cause every place on earth would have natural disasters on scale never seen before. Hey man @thinkstory, Hebrew native here- Tzalal doesn't mean going darker. i think you meant Tzel which is shadow. Tzalal means dived, swam undwewater - which is very interesting considering the place they found the bodies.......
Travis Cohle lived in Alaska. "He had some strange fuckin' ideas." Said Rust about his father. This could actually correlate with season 1 in some way. Maybe.
I believe we need to pay attention to the parkas of all of the characters as other clues may be there…if you’ve figured out the ending to the Thing in the final scene, then you had to use the coats (and changes in color of coat each was wearing) to get there.
At the beginning of the episode after the scientists have left without their clothes or phone, I was thinking it might be a reference to the Dyatlov's Pass incident.
WOW! You pointed out some cool details I missed.. thanks... I think the answer is yes, breakdown each one. However I may just bank them and go back and watch Season 1 to see the seminal True Detective.. thanks again....
Still bugging me that the deputy who thinks he's the co-sheriff was hoarding case files in his house & not required to return them to secured storage, & why did his son have to lie & sneak the file out. There's got to be a good reason for his secrecy & the wall to wall stacks of boxes, beyond the reference to a certain political/legal situation related to official documents & flooding you may have heard something about, how much evidence is he hiding & for who?
He definitely is hiding information. We need to figure out whose side he’s on. Is he helping the scientists’ killer or Annie’s killer? Or is there another motive?
"She's awake" by the guy in the right coat is referencing the ghost of the murdered native woman. And she brought along her tongue. Did they all do it given the wounds. Enjoyed E1, earthy, characters and Jodie. For Twin Peaks fans Travis resurrected BOB. and didn't Rust spend some time in Alaska?
Something is going on with the color turquois. The room is being painted turquois, the drawing of the monster is turquois and a few other things in the episode.
I think the chief got together with a man who had a daughter (the girl she is taking care of) I think the man and her actual son died in a drunk driving accident 🤷🏻♀️

👍
Also he didn't mention rage issues of main character? When she started hearing that song on the campus. And he also called it Beatles. But I think it wasn't their song lol. And also some thing was running on coridor
@@tekiero Liz likes to play dumb. She lies a lot (like claiming that she doesn't know about the case of the dead activist).
My take is dad asked son to speak up for his own benefit and Jodie says no need I hear fine basically telling dad to deal with his own lousy hearing.
@@jonfreeman9682 I like that.
The tongue thing is related to Inuit culture.
If anyone has seen "The Terror" then you know what is about to happen.
Also, you should definately watch The Terror; it is one of the best 1 seasons shows out there!
That’s exactly what I thought of! Loved The Terror!❣️
This show also reminds me of The Hand, which involved the murders of scientists at a similar facility.
there was a second season; japanese horror. not my thing, but had some creepy stuff
@@pacodance29 Ik, but it was completely different, very much like True Detective.
Watched Episode 1 twice ; so good so good 🙃 The shaking man in the beginning of this episode is Owen McDonnell who played Eve's husband Niko Polastri in Killing Eve
Thanks! I was wondering where I knew him from!
Even if Travis is a hallucination, there's no way Rose could have found those corpses w/o supernatural means.
I’d say more spiritual than super natural. 🤷🏽♀️

@@ashdeckert4259 at the end, it's the same. 😁
Given how they've teased visions repeatedly, it would be cheap to promise the audience a supernatural thread and then bail on it with some cheap explanation. Supernatural may feel odd, but it seems better than wrapping it up with a bow and saying it was all a magnetic effect or folie a deus.
@@victorcates9330 - True Detective is not a supernatural series. Why do you suppose the explanation will be cheap?
Lots of references to the season one including the quote from the Yellow King, the spiral, antlers and Lonestar Beer, plus Rust being from Alaska. I would not be surprised if there is an element of cosmic horror similar to that season that is implied but never proven.
Yes, please continue to breakdown the season. I'm hooked. Thank you!!
The night is dark, and full of terrors.
And Winter is HERE!
I’m hooked so far. There’s definitely a supernatural element that kinda reminds me of season 1. I can’t wait to see your breakdowns every week!
There was no supernatural element to season one.
What man-hating lesbian hate white people woke AF stereotype yeah I didn't see that at all 😂
My theory so far is that the mining company is doing something shady/illicit obviously something within the realm of murder. And the weird creepy paranormal stuff, I think there's something in the water thats making the people see stuff.
I agree maybe the guy with the jacket was working for both companies and watching them then they scientists uncovered something.
I can assure you the dad asking his son to speak up is not because of Liz’s hearing. We’re meant to see that as Liz favoring the kid. She’s essentially telling the dad to back off
No Liz hears fine but dad can't hear good so he asks son to speak up for his own benefit but Liz says I hear fine so deal with it dad.
@@jonfreeman9682 lol no

@@Zegeebwah I guess…
When Liz was first at the station and was in the room examining all the personal items and closes the medicine cabinet, did you notice someone was watching her in the mirror as it closes? It’s a very brief glimpse.
An interesting first episode.Gave me twin peaks vibes, and there was something about the character Travis, which reminded me of killer bob.
I thought so too
What about this reminded you of Twin Peaks?
@@ZegeebwahTravis (Cohle, Rust's dad I suspect) has a Bob like vibe and similar look. Hank is the name of the older detective. Cooper is the officer that calls Evangeline about her sister. Lulu, is similar to Lucy, who is handling the calls to the families of the scientists. And if you want to get into the weird- the sound design loved by Lynch, the e.lec.tric.ity referred to in this video @3:43 is reminiscent of the Arm (aka man from another place)
@@lisad7403very observative! I agree.
@@freakfire74 in the recent episode it dawned on me that Annie (K) is also another character!
I think blue is important too. Like “Blue King Crab.” Much like there was lots of yellow in S1 and the Yellow King.
Really great break down. Thank you. I enjoyed it so much, but didn't catch all these details!
The guy in the trailer wearing Annie's Parka looks like Mosely, the miner walking out with Annie' brother when Navarro greets him at the mine entrance.
The guy sitting in the chair is Travis. He's wearing the same shirt that he has on when Rose follows him onto the ice.
Reindeer.
@@bennygerow Thanks king, spell check
It could be they drank some water that had contamination causing dementia. Then some high frequency sound scared them so they ran and fell off the cliff. They didn't mean to jump off the cliff but just ran and it happens a cliff was there. Just like buffalo.
Yes, or something they felt.
The male reindeer actually read the script and said no way, I am out, follow me my beeches.
The last shot showing Jodie looking over all the photos on the floor--in the form of a SPIRAL. That's really connecting Season One. This should be good!!
He said to speak up because hes trying to "dad" his son on the job and liz backed the kid up. Shes not hard of hearing.
Glad to know that you reviewed this series. You guys ALWAYS do great work!!
I’m watching the episode again. What about the being that runs across the hall when the delivery man shows up and the place is empty. Something was still there. At this point I think it’s alien ish (not necessarily short grey ones) or possibly some type of pole shift magnetic issue that makes people go coo-coo.
Please keep these videos coming. LOVE IT!
I don’t know what to think about Dan. He seems to want to delay things as if the scientists left fresh food, acting as if he doesn’t hear a request to look at cases with missing tongues, and denying files are at his house. He knows more than he pretends. I think he plays dumb and jokes a bit too much.
I think Liz's husband and son were killed, and she took her husband's daughter from another relationship.
Please cover the entire season! This was a great start and drew me in!!
Lol no it wasn't
@@reedbeckerlol. It was. You are totaly wrong.
there’s something about magical realism that’s making this so good for me
In the opening, the camera pans from Ferris Bueller to sammich guy, and coat dude isn’t there.

Lets not forget Rust spent a little time in Alaska, and the swirl symbol from previous seasons can been seen in the trailer.
You didn’t mention that the spiral is also found in Season 1 and is the symbol of the Yellow King, and that Rust is from Alaska…
The dead scientists are reminicent of a real expedition in 1959 at the Dyatlov pass in Russia where all particants died in a highly mysterious way.
Always love your breakdowns glad you're doing this show, and this is much better than other breakdowns I've seen for this season
I really love Navarro. She gave me such badass energy while still being an empathetic person.

I think the word “great” is so overused and misused, it’s lost all meaning. This is one of those times.
The show was pure garbage. Awful top to bottom
@michaelsegriff3362 Or you have lost your touch to that word.
Yes, it's never really supernatural, just bad humans

Two others in red (tsalal) snow jackets
Is Travis Rusts dad possible in timing?
I’m all in
Great analysis!! This season is off to a great start
Thanks! 🙌
Whenever I hear the name “Holden,” I always think about reading THE CATCHER IN THE RYE back in High School circa 1992/1993.
Lastly, is it SOP for cops to have boxes of case records in their homes?
there was a flood in the station. thats why he took them to his house. i guess he was in charge and could do that in Alaska lol
My theory is that something in the atmosphere perhaps even the water itself is driving people to madness.
That makes way more sense than the magnetic shift
Mercury poisoning is my guess. The mine is leaking mercury into the groundwater. The gold mining process uses mercury to recover gold particulates and mercury poisoning is known to cause hallucinations. Anna K discovered the contamination and was killed before she could blow the whistle. I think the missing murder weapon will turn out to be a piece of a mining tool due to the star-shape of the wounds.
@@weybye91 everyone consumes water, and only those from the station have disappeared; the water wouldn't leave a cut tongue on the ground.

Bro you are a PRO tv show reviewer. Keep up the good work!
Travis Cohle lived in Alaska. "He had some strange fuckin' ideas." Said Rust about his father. This could actually correlate with season 1 in some way. Maybe.
The person drowning in the trailer is making similar arm motions to the guy in the visions that lead to the three dead bodies.
Yes, Travis is not dancing, he is drowning
Liked this episode alot. Nice job on the breakdown!👍
Did u notice that when the guy was seizing in the beginning…he was wearing that beige parka
I believe we need to pay attention to the parkas of all of the characters as other clues may be there…if you’ve figured out the ending to the Thing in the final scene, then you had to use the coats (and changes in color of coat each was wearing) to get there.
Environmental Horror.
Also getting "At the Mountains of Madness" vibes which tracks, given the themes established in S1.
Please cover this show 🙏🏻 love true detective
Spiral = White walkers
At the beginning of the episode after the scientists have left without their clothes or phone, I was thinking it might be a reference to the Dyatlov's Pass incident.
I was getting big The Thing vibes from the opening scenes. Also big Marge Gunderson vibes from Jody Foster
Great breakdown. Very Twin Peaks sometimes, and the frozen bodies remind me of Han Solo cryogenically frozen in carbonite.
4:53
Or suggesting that he's just very quite and soft spoken.
I think the chief got together with a man who had a daughter (the girl she is taking care of)
I think the man and her actual son died in a drunk driving accident 🤷🏻♀️
Look up Yellow king connection where the spiral can be found on the guys body.
I wondered if Holden was a nod to Mindhunter. Uncommon name.
The guy dancing looked like Bob from Twin Peaks 😰
Episode was amazing. Keep covering the show.
Man its mind blowing what some people can take from one episode already, at the end credits I couldn't even remember everyones name :P
I swear my gf will jump to a conclusion in the first scene connecting dots that might pan out but she's like asking me so that's why this happened? I'm like it's 30 seconds into a brand new season of a show I've never seen I have no idea! Haha
Good episode and good review. Thx! Noticed that Travis did not have any footprints in the snow.

I love these breakdowns, thanks. Looks like it’s gonna be a good series. Loves s1 and s2. Definitely gotta watch s4 episodes a couple times. A lot of story lines. Hopefully it all ties together.
1 is best but 2 is awful and 3 is barely watchable.
S3 barely watchable??? Not sure bout that. Ending was stupid but I thought the acting was good M. Ali and S Dorff especially. But agree on s1 …off the charts good. How is this season looking? I think it’s promising.
@@johnjaramillo3790 So far I'm loving this season. It's got the thing and X-files vibes.
